SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nineteenth Century Forum (NCF) Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss Chapter 3: \"Clare's Commonable Plants.\" Kindly RSVP to Sarah Van Cleve (srvc@umich.edu) to receive the pre-circulated reading materials.\n\nTheresa Kelley's Clandestine Marriage delves into Romantic representations of botanizing culture\, exploring in particular the role botany played in larger Romantic-era debates about life and the ability to know\, categorize\, and depict its various forms. The chapter we will read focuses on the unsettling perspective brought by John Clare's plant poetry\; often considered a poet of place and of enclosure\, Clare's refusal to use Linnaean plant names is characterized by Kelley as a small act of poetic and quasi-scientific rebellion. Kelley thus links what she calls \"Clare's Commonable Plants\" and his resistance toward what he saw as the authoritarian Linnaean system to a retroactive resistance to the similarly authoritarian system of enclosure and the damage it wrought on rural communities.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Stress and Brain Health from Biology to Social Contex
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker\, Dr. Huda Akil\, and her colleagues have provided the first psychological evidence of endorphins\, and showed that endorphins are activated by stress and inhibit pain. In investigations of the mechanism underlying stress activity in anxiety and depression\, she demonstrated that social defeat in rodents activates unique neural pathways resembling those alerted in human depression. Her team has also focused on the role of specific genes in the pathology of mood disorders.\n\nDr. Huda Akil is a graduate of the University of California\, University of Iowa and the American University of Beirut. She is the Gardner Quarton Distinguished University Professor of Neurosciences at The Molecular & Behavioral Neuroscience Institute at the University of Michigan. She has made unique contributions to the understanding of the brain biology of emotions\, including pain\, anxiety\, depression and substance abuse. She is the author of over 500 original scientific papers and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Science.\n\nThis is the fifth of ten lectures to be presented once each month from September 2020 through June\,2021. The next lecture will be held February 9\, 2021. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Adressing COVID Vaccine Hesitancy
DESCRIPTION:The rapid development of vaccines to combat the COVID-19 pandemic is being heralded as a success of modern medicine. But vaccines can only curtail pandemics when enough people are willing to use them\, and substantial vaccine hesitancy already exists in many populations. The speed of vaccine production and availability through an emergency use authorization\, coupled with political divisiveness and broad skepticism of scientific claims\, all affect people's perceptions of vaccines and hence threaten our ability to achieve herd immunity. In addition\, a national history of research abuses and health inequities for communities of color influences how the medical community fosters and builds trust with those most in need. This panel will tackle these complex issues through the lens of history\, law\, decision science\, and community engagement with a diverse cadre of nationally recognized leaders. \n**This event is open access but capacity is limited\, the event will be recorded and available afterward @ cbssm.med.umich.edu**

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Social Learning in Groups: an Experimental Study
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nA large literature in economics and finance has shown the dangers associated with — and the inefficiencies that arise from — the imitation of others’ actions\, and from herd behavior in particular. We contribute to this literature by providing empirical evidence of the benefits of imitation in repeated social learning environments. We show experimentally that observing the actions of others improves the quality of decisions and leads to higher information aggregation rates\, even in settings where the actions of others do not provide additional information\, beyond the private information available to agents. \nSpecifically\, we conduct a series of controlled laboratory experiments\, in which subjects repeatedly try to estimate an unknown state of nature while observing private information that arrives sequentially\, and\, depending on the treatment\, additional observations of others. There are no direct externalities in this setting\, and each subject is rewarded independently of others for estimating correctly. Between treatments\, we vary the information available to subjects at the time they make their guesses. This simple setting allows us to address two questions. First\, we document whether at all and to what extent people are capable of extracting the information contained in their peers’ private signals by observing their actions\, in a repeated setting. Second\, we study the usefulness of observing other people’s decisions when private signals of others are also available\, and\, thus\, others' actions should be irrelevant.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MLK Reading Series
DESCRIPTION:Join MCSP\, CSP\, and LSWA for a series of conversations addressing the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. at this crucial turning point in the history of racism in America. More than fifty years ago\, King made a call for a poor people’s campaign to take up arms against the evils of racism\, poverty\, and militarism. Yet\, King’s expanding and increasingly radical vision for his work is often forgotten\, co-opted by voices that distort his emphasis on love\, compassion\, and nonviolence to serve the status quo. Anti-racist activists who’ve followed King have had to grapple with how to interpret and respond to his legacy. One of them\, the Rev. William Barber relaunched the Poor People’s Campaign in 2018\, adding to King’s list of evils “environmental degradation” and calling for a multiracial coalition of poor people to challenge America’s exploitation of its people and the land. This three-part reading group will trace King’s varied legacy from his last published book to the present day and consider how those of us working for social justice can understand and build on his legacy.\n\nAny questions\, or to receive the RSVP link for the reading materials and the Zoom link\, email LSWA Director Carol Tell (tellc@umich.edu). \n\nJan. 13\, 5 p.m. King\, “The World House\,” from Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? \nFeb. 25\, 5 p.m. “MLK Now” by Brandon Terry and responses\nNEW DATE Apr. 8\, 5 p.m. William Barber\, “Pastoral Letter to the Nation” and Marc Lamont Hill\, “Language of the Unheard” and “Toward an Abolitionist Vision”

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Cosmology: The History of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be live streamed\n\nThis lecture will present the history of the universe\, from the moment of the Big Bang to the present cosmological epoch. During this span of time\, the universe experiences a brief phase of superluminal expansion\, develops an asymmetry of matter over anti-matter\, produces a substantial component of dark matter\, synthesizes light nuclei\, and leaves behind a background radiation field. Galaxies\, then stars and planets\, are formed during the later stages of this sweep of cosmic evolution.\n\nOur speaker\, Dr. Fred C. Adams\, is the Ta-You Wu Collegiate Professor of Physics at the University of Michigan. He works on a wide variety of topics in theoretical astrophysics\, including cosmology\, star formation\, and extra-solar planets. \n\nThis is the first of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Advances in Science. The next lecture will be on January 21\, 2021. The title is Gravitational Wave Astronomy – Listening to the Universe. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture. \n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:NSF Mid-Career Advancement Program Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mid-career is an essential time for scientists to develop their research\, but it's often hard to find the time and resources to do so. The NSF MCA provides funding for research development through partnerships across disciplines and institutions. Dr. Chu-Hsiang (Daisy) Chang and Dr. Jocelyn Stitt will discuss strategies for applying to the MCA Program.\n\nWorkshop Target Audience: \nMid-career faculty (defined as Associate Professors at rank for at least 3 years) from the University of Michigan (all campuses) or Michigan State University.\n\nAbout the NSF MCA Program:\nAn academic career often does not provide the uninterrupted stretches of time necessary for acquiring and building new skills to enhance and advance one's research program. Mid-career scientists in particular are at a critical career stage where they need to advance their research programs to ensure long-term productivity and creativity but are often constrained by service\, teaching\, or other activities that limit the amount of time devoted to research.\n\nThe MCA offers an opportunity for scientists and engineers at the Associate Professor rank (or equivalent) to substantively enhance and advance their research program through synergistic and mutually beneficial partnerships\, typically at an institution other than their home institution. Projects that envision new insights on existing problems or identify new but related problems previously inaccessible without new methodology or expertise from other fields are encouraged.\n\nPartners from outside the PI's own sub-discipline or discipline are encouraged\, but not required\, to enhance interdisciplinary networking and convergence across science and engineering fields.\n\nBy (re)-investing in mid-career investigators\, NSF aims to enable and grow a more diverse scientific workforce (more women\, persons with disabilities\, and underrepresented minorities) at high academic ranks\, who remain engaged and active in cutting-edge research.\n\nProposals must be submitted by Feb. 1\, 2021 by principal investigators at the Associate Professor level (or equivalent). Read the full program call.\n\nThis event is jointly sponsored by IRWG and the Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen) at Michigan State University.

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:Aphasia Social Hour
DESCRIPTION:Aphasia\, a speech-language disorder that can affect all aspects of communication — speaking\, reading\, writing\, comprehension\, etc. — is more common than previously understood. Acquired when the brain experiences trauma like that of a stroke or head injury\, more than 2 million people in the U.S. are thought to have the disorder\; yet\, it's not something most people are aware of. It can be incredibly isolating\, which is why staying social and connected is especially important. \n\nThe University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP) at the University Center for Language and Literacy (UCLL)\, hosts a free\, virtual aphasia social hour each week to help facilitate social connecting while practicing communication skills. \n\nAll aphasia social hours in January are scheduled for 4 - 5 p.m. Thursdays (Eastern) and will take on the following topics: \n\n*Jan. 14 - Resolve to participate in this session all about — you guessed it — resolutions. Love them? Hate them? Have a funny story about past resolutions? Bring it on.\n\n*Jan. 21 - Hometown Proud! Share about where you’re from or where you now live! Bring maps\, photos\, and brag (or complain!) about that place where you were brought up.\n \n*Jan. 28 - For us in Michigan\, wintertime can mean hunker-time\, as in hunker down until spring. But it doesn't have to. As the Nordic people say\, \"there is no such thing as bad weather\, only poor preparation.\" We're not sure about all that\, but come ready to share how you stay active in the winter months\, either outdoors or indoors.\n\nRegistration is required in order to get the link to join. See: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwlc-qhpjoqGNRqaI3Fepl8dswAWsS6SwuV\n\nWhen you click the link to register\, you can select which weeks you want to participate — all in one place. Sign up for them all to make sure you don't miss out on connecting with others in the aphasia community. Building confidence and staying social are some of the best things you can do for yourself and loved ones when aphasia is a part of your life.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Clements Bookworm: Art\, Food\, and the Politics of Race in the Age of American Expansion
DESCRIPTION:Still-life paintings of food look innocent at first sight\, but were depictions of food merely delicious and pretty pictures to admire? Shana Klein's new book\, \"The Fruits of Empire\,\" argues otherwise. This book talk will address Klein's research on representations of food to understand how they reflected and shaped conversations about race and national expansion in the United States. She will discuss the paintings\, photographs\, and silverware objects in the book and ask: Who do images of food serve? And at whose expense? The results are not always delicious.\n\nDr. Klein\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Kent State University\, is trained in the history of American art\, with sub-specialties in African-American and Native-American art.\n\nThis episode was generously sponsored by Duane and Marilyn Kirking.\n\n*The Clements Bookworm is a webinar series in which panelists discuss history topics. Recommended books\, articles\, and other resources are provided in each session. Inspired by the traditional Clements Library researcher tea time\, we invite you to pull up a chair at our [virtual] table. Live attendees are encouraged to post comments and questions\, respond to polls\, and add to our conversation and camaraderie.*

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Biophysics Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The Biophysics Virtual Seminar Series presents:\n\nDr. Michele Vendruscolo - Centre for Misfolding Diseases\, Department of Chemistry\, University of Cambridge\n\n*“Activity Relationship by Kinetics for Drug Discovery in Protein Misfolding Diseases”*\n\nABSTRACT: Protein oligomers are increasingly recognized as the most cytotoxic forms of protein aggregates. It has been very challenging\, however\, to target these oligomers with therapeutic compounds\, because of their dynamic and transient nature. To overcome this problem\, I will describe a 'structure kinetic-activity relationship' (SKAR) approach\, which enables the discovery and systematic optimization of compounds that reduce the number of oligomers produced during an aggregation reaction. I will illustrate this strategy for the amyloid beta peptide\, which is closely associated with Alzheimer's disease\, by developing a rhodanine compound capable of dramatically reducing the production of amyloid beta oligomers. As this strategy is general\, it can be applied to oligomers of any protein.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhD Defense: Charles Park
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: This event will be held remotely via Zoom. The link will be placed below.\n\nZoom: https://umich-health.zoom.us/j/97318374664?pwd=YTB4dzNTVXdRZDZQcGR1dVRLZi9JUT09\n\nWith the recent progress in technologies\, analyzing detailed cellular interactions that constitute the immune system have become possible\, and many more biological and engineering tools became within reach for precise investigation and modulation of immune responses. As a result\, immunotherapies\, such as anti-PD-1 antibody and chimeric antigen receptor T cells\, have revolutionized cancer immunotherapy\, while genome sequencing and nanotechnology allowed for the rapid development of various vaccines in response to the recent outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019. Here\, first discussed is modulation of the immune responses using biomaterials\, such as silica- or lipid-based nanoparticles and immunomodulating agents for cancer immunotherapy. My approach for immune modulation was to deliver vaccine or pattern recognition receptor-stimulating drugs using nanoparticles to enhance the activation of antigen presenting cells at the innate immune response stage\, which leads to stronger adaptive immune responses. In addition\, induction of a stronger chemokine gradient to recruit more T cells to tumor from the blood circulation was investigated. In the next study\, use of lipid-based nanoparticle to formulate vaccines against infectious diseases\, such as human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2)\, is introduced. Nanoparticle-mediated vaccine delivery increases the amount of antigen reaching lymph nodes to interact with immune cells. Also\, co-delivery of adjuvants further induces stronger adaptive immune responses. Meanwhile\, it is critical to preserve the epitope conformation when protein antigens are used for vaccine formulation\, in order to induce functional neutralizing antibodies. The aim of the study was to co-load a subunit protein and an adjuvant into lipid-based nanoparticles while maintaining the structural intactness and induce enhanced antibody responses when vaccinated to animals. Overall\, immune modulation strategies are introduced in therapeutic or prophylactic settings\, where innate and adaptive immune responses were enhanced using biomaterials-based treatments.\n\nChair: Dr. James J. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Wendell Pierce Stars in Some Old Black Man
DESCRIPTION:Written only a few years before the history-making events of 2020\, Some Old Black Man frames racial prejudice with bold probity rarely confronted and dramatized. It challenges people of all ages to learn about the unique perspective of elders whose lived struggles created opportunities for future generations and to confront the experiential divides that can grow larger due to generational differences. \n\nIn the play\, Calvin Jones (Wendell Pierce)\, a hip\, coolly intellectual African-American college professor moves his 82-year-old ailing\, but doggedly independent\, father\, Donald Jones (Charlie Robinson)\, from Greenwald\, MS into his Harlem penthouse. The play begins with an argument over what to eat for breakfast\, then turns into a generational clash over race\, opportunity\, and a decision that Calvin made years ago. Donald’s grumpiness is peppered with disturbing outbursts\, revealing bits of his past\, informed by growing up Black and poor in the South. \n\nThemes of social justice themes and intergenerational conflict make Some Old Black Man a fitting title for our times\, when the reality of more togetherness unveils some of the tensions underlying even the closest of relationships. \n\nThe play was filmed in Detroit after the creative team quarantined together during rehearsals in Ann Arbor under strict safety protocols.\n\nAfter the digital premiere\, join the creative team for a live talkback. Production will be available on demand through Monday\, January 18.
