SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HET Brown Bag Seminar | On 1D\, N = 4 Supersymmetric SYK-Type Models
DESCRIPTION:Proposals are made to describe 1D\, N = 4 supersymmetrical systems that extend SYK models by compactifying from 4D\, N = 1 supersymmetric Lagrangians involving chiral\, vector\, and tensor supermultiplets. Quartic fermionic vertices are generated via intergrals over the whole superspace\, while 2(q-1)-point fermionic vertices are generated via superpotentials. The coupling constants in the superfield Lagrangians are arbitrary\, and can be chosen to be Gaussian random. In that case\, these 1D\, N = 4 supersymmetric SYK models would exhibit Wishart-Laguerre randomness\, which share the same feature among other 1D supersymmetric SYK models in literature. One difference with 1D\, N = 1 and N = 2 models though\, is our models contain dynamical bosons\, but this is consistent with other 1D\, N = 4 and 2D\, N = 2 models in literature.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:International Institute Round Table. Coronavirus Politics: The Comparative Politics and Policy of COVID-19 Response
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 is the most significant global crisis of most people’s lifetimes. The numbers have been stupefying\, whether of infection and mortality\, the scale of public health measures\, or the economic consequences of shutdown. *Coronavirus Politics: The Comparative Politics and Policy of COVID-19* identifies key threads in the global comparative discussion that continue to shed light on COVID-19 and shape debates about what it means for scholarship in health and comparative politics. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy | Decolonizing Race and Ethnicity: Understanding Racial formation in Japanese society
DESCRIPTION:Advance registration for this Zoom webinar is required:\nhttps://myumi.ch/nbEy3\n\nWhat are race and ethnicity? Students are often taught in social science courses that they are socially constructed categories. But what does that exactly mean? In the United States\, race is commonly defined and practiced as a category based on visible phenotypes\, whereas ethnicity is based on distinguishable cultural traits. Are these definitions of race and ethnicity globally universal or should they be? In this webinar\, I challenge the U.S. and Euro-centric understanding and applications of race and ethnicity. By introducing different theoretical approaches to define race and ethnicity in sociology\, I discuss how these concepts should be understood\, treated and applied in our analysis. In nutshell\, race and ethnicity are malleable categories across time and space\; they are subject to change depending on local and global conditions. I explore whether or not a distinction between race and ethnicity is analytically warranted and why discussing racism between groups who share similar phenotypical and cultural traits is not only possible\, but important\, especially in the context of Japanese society.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Special Joint Seminar between DCMB\, Mathematics\, MIDAS\, and Smale Institute
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThe quest to understand consciousness\, once the purview of philosophers and theologians\, is now actively pursued by scientists of many stripes. This talk looks at consciousness from the perspective of theoretical computer science. It formalizes the Global Workspace Theory (GWT) originated by cognitive neuroscientist Bernard Baars and further developed by him\, Stanislas Dehaene\, and others. Our major contribution lies in the precise formal definition of a Conscious Turing Machine (CTM)\, also called a Conscious AI. We define the CTM in the spirit of Alan Turing’s simple yet powerful definition of a computer\, the Turing Machine (TM). We are not looking for a complex model of the brain nor of cognition but for a simple model of (the admittedly complex concept of) consciousness. After formally defining CTM\, we give a formal definition of consciousness in CTM. We then suggest why the CTM has the feeling of consciousness. The reasonableness of the definitions and explanations can be judged by how well they agree with commonly accepted intuitive concepts of human consciousness\, the range of related concepts that the model explains easily and naturally\, and the extent of its agreement with scientific evidence. \n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95135773568

SUMMARY:Presentation:Examining the impact of COVID-19 on adults with physical disabilities from marginalized communities
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will present the findings from a recent study on the initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adults with physical disabilities from marginalized communities in Southeast Michigan\, one of the early pandemic epicenters in the United States. Interviews with 16 adults revealed how participants either had to engage in risky behavior to have their needs met or avoid risk and not have those needs met. They contribute to understandings of risk\, its impact on physical and psychological health\, and the importance of accommodations. The study expands insight into early responses to the pandemic among individuals with long-term physical disabilities from marginalized communities. It helps elucidate how socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity can differentially impact the lives of adults with physical disabilities and further marginalize a population that is “always already” vulnerable. This knowledge can expand awareness and appreciation of how social\, economic\, and political systems are structured and integrated into future clinical guidelines and emergency response policies and more adequately addressed.\n\nThis webinar is free and open to the public. Communication Access Realtime Translation services will be available to provide live closed captions for the event.\n\nThe content of this webinar has been developed under a grant from the National Institute on Disability\, Independent Living\, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR #90RTHF0001). NIDILRR is a Center within the Administration for Community Living (ACL)\, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The contents of this webinar do not necessarily represent the policy of NIDILRR\, ACL\, or HHS and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government.\n\nRegister at https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_8RIqY8GES1q8EeoSya0JCQ.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:CAS Webinar | The Problems of Genocide: Permanent Security and the Language of Transgression
DESCRIPTION:Please register in advance for the webinar here: https://myumi.ch/qgOle\n \n After registration\, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to join the webinar.\n \n Cover credit: Murad Subay\, www.muradsubay.com.\n \n Genocide is not only a problem of mass death\, but also of how\, as a relatively new idea and law\, it organizes and distorts thinking about civilian destruction. Taking the normative perspective of civilian immunity from military attack\, Dr. Moses argues that the implicit hierarchy of international criminal law\, atop which sits genocide as the “crime of crimes\,” blinds us to other types of humanly caused civilian death\, like bombing cities\, and the “collateral damage” of missile and drone strikes. Talk of genocide\, then\, can function ideologically to detract from systematic violence against civilians perpetrated by governments of all types. “The Problems of Genocide” contends that this violence is the consequence of “permanent security” imperatives: the striving of states\, and armed groups seeking to found states\, to make themselves invulnerable to threats.\n \n Bios:\n\n A. DIRK MOSES is Frank Porter Graham Distinguished Professor of Global Human Rights History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since July 2020. He received his PhD from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2000. From 2000-2010 and 2016-2020\, he taught at the University of Sydney. Between 2011 and 2015\, he held the Chair of Global and Colonial History at the European University Institute\, Florence.\n \n His first book\, “German Intellectuals and the Nazi Past” (2007)\, was awarded the H-Sozu-Kult “Historical Book of the Year” prize for contemporary history. Dr. Moses has also written extensively about genocide and global history. Recent anthologies include “Postcolonial Conflict and the Question of Genocide: The Nigeria-Biafra War\, 1967–1970” (2018)\, “The Holocaust in Greece” (2018)\, and “Decolonization\, Self-Determination\, and the Rise of Global Human Rights Politics” (2020). His latest book\, “The Problems of Genocide: Permanent Security and the Language of Transgression\,” appeared in February 2021.\n \n Dr. Moses has held fellowships at the Jack\, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum\; at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington\, D.C\; and at the Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschung in Potsdam as an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellow. He was a visiting fellow at the WZB Center for Global Constitutionalism in Berlin in September-October 2019\, and senior fellow at the Lichtenberg-Kolleg in Göttingen\, in the winter of 2019-20. Dr. Moses has been senior editor of the “Journal of Genocide Research” since 2011\, and co-edits the War and Genocide book series for Berghahn Books.\n \n GEOFF ELEY is Karl Pohrt Distinguished University Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Michigan\, where he has taught since 1979. He previously taught at the University of Cambridge (1975-79). Trained originally as a modern German historian\, he also works in modern British history\, as well as on a general European front. He is interested in both the history of the Left and the history of the Right\; history and film\; historiography\; and history and theory. He recently began teaching a large new undergraduate course on the History of Terrorism.\n \n His earliest works were “Reshaping the German Right: Radical Nationalism and Political Change after Bismarck” (1980\, 1991) and (with David Blackbourn) “The Peculiarities of German History” (1980\, 1984). More recent books include “Forging Democracy: A History of the Left in Europe. 1850-2000” (2002)\; “A Crooked Line: From Cultural History to the History of Society” (2005)\; (with Keith Nield) “The Future of Class in History” (2007)\; and “Nazism as Fascism: Violence\, Ideology\, and the Ground of Consent in Germany\, 1930-1945” (2013). He coedited “German Colonialism in a Global Age” (2014)\, “German Modernities from Wilhelm to Weimar: A Contest of Futures” (2016)\, and “Visualizing Fascism: The Twentieth-Century Rise of the Global Right” (2020). He is writing a general history of Europe in the 20th century and a new study of the German Right\, “Genealogies of Nazism: Conservatives\, Radical Nationalists\, Fascists in Germany\, 1860-1930.”\n\nCo-sponsors: Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies\, Donia Human Rights Center\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, and Society for Armenian Studies.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us at armenianstudies@umich.edu. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Re-orienting Ancient Medicine Courses
DESCRIPTION:This pedagogy workshop is aimed at (past\, current\, and would-be) instructors of ancient medicine\, science\, and technology courses who would be keen to integrate material from the pre-modern Middle East. Popular and more academic narratives often equate ancient medicine with Greco-Roman medicine and frame its study as an originist history of a monolithic western medical tradition. When these narratives introduce content from the pre-modern Middle East\, such as from Assyria or the medieval Islamicate world\, they define the contribution of Middle Eastern knowledge-makers in terms of their anticipation or preservation of a western science. \n\nThis workshop will discuss ways of foregrounding the theories and actors of pre-modern Middle Eastern science\, technology\, and medicine without rendering them subservient to a hegemonic \"western tradition\". Moreover\, we will review a range of primary and secondary source materials that we utilize in our own teaching of these subjects. Questions or concerns can be addressed to cwebster@ucdavis.edu. Co-sponsored by the Society for Ancient Medicine and the UC Davis Early Science Workshop.\n\nPlease register here: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_M-fHevFTRIuOA7fS2Z4epQ

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The Boston Massacre: A Family History
DESCRIPTION:The story of the Boston Massacre is familiar to generations. But from the very beginning\, most accounts have obscured a fascinating truth: the Massacre arose from conflicts that were as personal as they were political. Serena Zabin draws on original sources and lively stories to follow British troops as they are dispatched from Ireland to Boston in 1768 to subdue the increasingly rebellious colonists. She reveals a forgotten world hidden in plain sight: the many regimental wives and children who accompanied the armies. We see these families jostling with Bostonians for living space\, finding common cause in the search for a lost child\, trading barbs\, and sharing baptisms. When soldiers shot unarmed citizens in the street\, it was these intensely human and now broken bonds that fueled what quickly became a bitterly fought American Revolution.\n\nSerena Zabin’s book \"The Boston Massacre: A Family History\" was awarded the 2020 Book of the Year Prize from the Journal of the American Revolution. She is Professor of History and Chair of the History Department at Carleton College.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Finding the Female Voice in the Ancient World
DESCRIPTION:It is hard enough to find women’s voices in the ancient world\, let alone the voices of women poets. Women were often silenced in antiquity\, told to be “seen and not heard”. Ancient authors were nearly always male\, and the canon of ancient literature focused almost exclusively on texts by\, for and about men\, making it hard for women to gain entry to the literary scene and hiding them from view\, turning their voices into stereotypes in male-authored texts\, or even silencing them completely. So how do we go about uncovering the hidden literary voices of the women of classical antiquity? This talk uncovers a wide range of different approaches and tools we can use to find the female voice in the ancient world\, some of them unconventional\, crossing between research and creative practice\, to explore how we might gain new insights into the forgotten literary women of antiquity.\n\nPlease register for this webinar here: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_t2h78t0wS0aayzXeuB4nKQ

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:IISS Lecture Series. A Spiderweb Story: The Faint but Numerous Strands of an Interconnected Middle Ages in Varqa & Golshah
DESCRIPTION:The Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar is pleased to announce a new public lecture \"A Spiderweb Story: The Faint but Numerous Strands of an Interconnected Middle Ages in Varqa & Golshah\" with Professor Cameron Cross on April 23 at 1:00-2:30 PM.\n \n The Abstract:\n \n The story of Varqa and Golshah\, the oldest extant romance in the New Persian language\, offers a fascinating glimpse into the interconnected literary histories of the Middle East. At first glance\, the poem is evidently an adaptation of a well-known love-story within the Arabic literature of the Abbasid period\, but the story quickly gets more complicated. By looking at the internal development of the narrative within the Arabic corpus\, we can trace the gradual accretion of \"romance\" motifs to its plot\, bringing it closer within the generic worlds of (parts of) the Thousand and One Nights and Persian love-stories like Bizhan and Manizheh. These same motifs\, however\, point at a deeper layer of thematic interconnectivity\, namely the long accounts of love and adventure written in Greek in the first to fifth centuries CE. The adaptation of Varqa and Golshah into Persian\, then\, suggests not a \"beginning\" but a \"re-beginning\" of romance in the eleventh century\, a continuation of Hellenistic models in dialogue with Arabic and Iranian traditions. In fact\, the most notable innovation in the Persian tale is not the addition of romance but of epic\, with extended battles interposed between the scenes of courtship and separation. These battle scenes\, along with the \"surprise\" ending of a resurrection and mass conversion\, bring the romance squarely into the fold of political and sacred history. In this regard\, the romance finds a close analogue in one of the earliest and most widely translated romances of the Byzantine and Western European cultural blocs\, Floris and Blancheflor. The structural and motival similarities between these two narratives not only point to a common set of literary practices\, due to their shared Hellenistic heritage\, but also to a certain convergence of historical factors in the eleventh and especially the thirteenth century\, an era of intense transregional exchange through trade\, pilgrimage\, and holy war. Like a spiderweb viewed in the right light\, Varqa and Golshah illuminates these many strands\, faint but strong\, that connect the histories of the Middle East and Mediterranean world.\n\nRegister at https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0qd-uprjsuHtxNIsfTOnqZn4pk8xzGgD0h

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:The Premodern Colloquium. Why Did Public Infrastructure Appear in Song Court Landscape Painting?
DESCRIPTION:This essay examines the public infrastructure depicted in Northern Song (960-1127) court landscape paintings\, which includes roads\, waterways\, bridges\, and river ports. These paintings not only depict the public works but also portray people from all social strata utilizing these public resources. This new development in the landscape genre coincided with the political and social thought of the period\, which held that the state should spend tax revenues collected from the population to improve the wellbeing of the people. \n\nThe reading investigates visual materials ranging from court landscape painting\, administrative maps in local gazetteers\, as well as steles. The legal basis for the emergence of such landscape paintings in the 11th century was the separation of the emperor’s private treasury from the public treasury of the state. That separation was a factor in numerous policy debates from the period and was systematically documented in an early thirteenth-century book.

SUMMARY:Rally / Mass Meeting:PROTEST: Justice for Daunté Wright
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan has ignored police brutality and systemic racism for too long! Join the protest to hold them accountable. We will be creating shirts on-site\, please bring a shirt to participate. We will be meeting in the Diag then the march will continue throughout campus.\n\nPurpose\n\nThe unjust and unnecessary death of Daunté Wright is one of the most recent examples of how systemic racism has claimed the life of yet another Black person. We\, the School of Social Work Community\, are responding to this national\, pervasive problem by saying “enough is enough\,” and we need to make system-level change in our own sphere of influence. The University of Michigan must urgently move towards system-level changes by promoting more anti-racist practices and policies in our community. The University of Michigan\, with its abundance of resources\, should also be taking concrete actions to support the family and loved ones of Daunté Wright and the countless others who have lost someone to police brutality.\n\nJustice for Daunté Wright looks like supporting his family as they deal with this traumatic loss\; it looks like respecting his life enough to call his death a murder\, not an accident. Justice for Daunté Wright looks like holding the police officer who murdered him fully accountable\, and\, more broadly\, it looks like working to dismantle the systemic problems that lead to police brutality. While it is easy to point to implicit bias or a lack of training\, the root cause of police terrorism and other systems that disproportionately harm Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) populations is hatred in the form of racism. Unfortunately\, higher education is a system steeped in racism as well. Many BIPOC students are harmed while pursuing their education\, and many White students move through their educational experience without learning how they are perpetuating oppression. These problems impact students\, faculty\, and staff. \n\nAs students in the School of Social Work\, we have identified many ways that our school harms our BIPOC community members\, and we know similar problems exist throughout the University. Similarly\, we have identified many missed opportunities to prepare students to exit the University with the skills and knowledge to be anti-racist and disrupt cycles of harm. These are the ways systemic racism continues\, and this is part of the reason we fail to make meaningful progress on complex issues like police brutality.\n\nWe demand that the University of Michigan uses its power as a leading university to take immediate action to support Daunté Wright’s family. We demand that the School of Social Work take direct action to dismantle systemic racism in our community. We demand the University broadly considers how the issues that exist in the microcosm of the School of Social Work exist University-wide. We demand that the University of Michigan and School of Social Work adopt intentional practices to counteract the harm imposed on the BIPOC Community. Enough is enough!

SUMMARY:Other:National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
DESCRIPTION:The United States is currently experiencing an epidemic of prescription drug misuse and abuse. Opioid overdoses in Michigan have surged during the COVID-19 pandemic. To help combat this epidemic\, the Michigan Opioid Prescribing Engagement Network (Michigan OPEN) is partnering with hospitals\, pharmacies\, community organizations and police departments around the state to host medication take back events on Saturday\, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.\n\nResearch has found that about 70 percent of the opioids prescribed for surgery go unused and those medications are not disposed of. This increases the potential for these medications to be diverted back into the community or contaminate waterways. However\, Michigan OPEN’s efforts with take back events have led to more than 13\,000 pounds of unused medications and approximately 235\,000 opioids being collected and properly disposed of.\n\nTake back events provide a safe process for disposing of unused medications while protecting our communities\, children and environment. Remove the risk from your home and bring any unused opioids to a Take Back Event in your community.\n\nFind take back event locations throughout Michigan by visiting http://michigan-open.org/.

SUMMARY:Performance:(CANCELLED) John Moreland - Rescheduled from August 7\, 2020
DESCRIPTION:John Moreland started writing when he was ten years old\, the same year his family moved from Kentucky\, to Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, where he still lives today. He's been slinging songs for more than half his life. He started fronting local punk and hardcore bands in high school. After graduation\, he had an epiphany. \"I'd just overexposed myself to punk and hardcore to the point that it just didn't do anything for me anymore\,\" he says. The remedy? Americana songwriting. \"I was 19 in 2004\, and Steve Earle had put out 'The Revolution Starts Now\,' and I remember hearing the song 'Rich Man's War' and totally feeling like somebody just punched me in the chest. Over the last half a dozen years or so\, John's honesty has stunned us––and stung. As he put hurts we didn’t even realize we had or shared into his songs\, we sang along. And we felt better. But there has always been far more to John Moreland than sad songs. Today\, his earthbound poetry remains potent\, but in addition to his world-weary candor\, John's music smolders with gentle wisdom\, flashes of wit and joy\, and compassion. \"I can’t dress myself up and be some folk singer character that I’m not really\,\" John says. \"I figured\, I can’t dress up these songs and try to sell them that way. All I can do is be me.\" He returns from the 2020 Folk Festival with a new album\, \"LP5.\"

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Implantable Neural Interfaces for Direct Control of Hand Prostheses
DESCRIPTION:State of the art robotic hands can mimic many functions of the human hand. These devices are a capable of actuating individual finger and multi-joint movements while providing adequate gripping force for daily activities. However\, for patients with spinal cord injuries or amputations\, there are few options to control these functions seamlessly or intuitively. A common barrier to restoring hand function to both populations is a lack of high-fidelity control signals. Non-invasive electrophysiological techniques record global summations of activity and lack the spatial or temporal resolution to extract or “decode” precise movement commands. The ability to decode finger movements from the motor system would allow patients to directly control hand functions and provide intuitive and scalable prosthetic solutions. This thesis investigates the capabilities of implantable devices to provide finger-specific commands for prosthetic hands. We adapt existing reasoning algorithms to two different sensing technologies. \n\nThe first is intracortical electrode arrays implanted into primary motor cortex of two non-human primates. Both subjects controlled a virtual hand with a regression algorithm that decoded their brain activity into finger kinematics. Performance was evaluated with a single degree of freedom target matching task. A state-of-the-art re-calibration approach improved performance\, measured as bit rate\, by an average of 33.1%. Notably\, decoding performance was not dependent on subjects moving their intact hands. In future research\, this approach can improve grasp precision for patients with spinal cord injuries. \n\nThe second sensing technology is intramuscular electrodes implanted into residual muscles and Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces of two patients with transradial amputations. Both participants used a high-speed pattern recognition system to switch between 10 individual finger and wrist postures in a virtual environment with an average success rate of 94.7% and a trial latency of 255 ms. When the set was reduced to five grasp postures\, average metrics improved to 100% success and 135 ms latency. These results are a significant improvement over state-of-the-art systems that use surface electromyography as inputs. Furthermore\, grasp performance remained reliable across arm positions and both participants used this controller to complete a functional assessment with robotic prostheses. \nFor a more dexterous solution\, we combined the high-speed pattern recognition system with a regression algorithm that enabled simultaneous position control of both the index finger and middle-ring-small finger group. Both patients used this system to complete a virtual two degree of freedom target matching task with throughputs of 1.79 and 1.15 bits per second each. The controllers in this study used only four and five differentiated inputs\, which can feasibly be processed with portable or implantable hardware.\n\nThese results demonstrate that implantable systems can provide patients with fluid and precise control of hand prostheses\, eliminating the need to use movement substitutions and triggers to cycle through grip modes. However\, clinically translatable implantable electronics need to be developed to realize the potential of these sensing and reasoning approaches. Further advancement of this technology will likely increase the utility and demand of robotic prostheses.

Richmond\n\nIn graduate school\, my classmates and I joked about--and were impressed with--those students of the classics who seemed fully absorbed in some minute issue apart from this time and place\, such as the use of particles in Thucydides. Without relegating philology to a mindset of escapism\, we wondered simultaneously 1) what might motivate the full immersion in another place and time\, and whether that was even possible\; and 2) what it was about us that was unable to disentangle identity from the matter at hand\, the text\, the image\, or even the word. Both directions 1) and 2) represent the knotty problems of our discipline of classics\, its construction\, its vaunt\, and perhaps its rehabilitation in the present historical moment\, should we choose the honest confrontation evident in the papers aligned at this symposium. \n\n\n2:45 - 3:30 pm\nPanel 1: Poetics of Classical Reception\nPanel Chair: Professor Yopie Prins (Professor of Comparative Literature) \n\n1. Fernando Gorab Leme (PhD student\, Classical Studies):\n “If Clodia Despised Catullus\, you can very well\, Dionysus\, despise Ariadne”\n\n2. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic History: California and the Car: Early Adoption of the Automobile in the Golden State
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nWe present preliminary results on the pre-1940 diffusion of the passenger car in the U.S. and the world. The U.S. adopted the car much faster than other countries with roughly twice as many motor vehicles per capita as Canada. Within the U.S.\, car adoption was most rapid in California. In 1930\, there were more cars in Los Angeles county than in Germany and Italy combined. Income and population density only partly explain California's lead. We are collecting individual-level data on car ownership in California starting in 1905 in order to understand who bought cars first and to investigate hypotheses for California's unusually rapid car adoption.\n\n*To join the seminar\, please contact at econ.events@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Other:Earth-Abundant Molecular Catalyst Systems for the Reduction of Dioxygen and Carbon Dioxide \n
DESCRIPTION:The steady increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and corresponding atmospheric concentrations continues to generate interest in using CO2 as a liquid fuel and commodity chemical precursor. The conversion of CO2 has the dual benefit of addressing its associated negative environmental effects and the diminishing supply of petrochemical feedstocks. At the heart of efficient reductive transformations are proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions\, where electrons and protons move in a concerted way to mitigate kinetic and thermodynamic penalties. Mechanistic understanding of these reactions can inform the design of optimized catalyst structures with improved activity and selectivity for specific products. Another cathodic reaction\, the electrocatalytic reduction of dioxygen (O2)\, has relevance to the development of more efficient fuel cells and can be similarly optimized through fundamental knowledge of the underlying PCET reactions. Molecular systems are well-positioned to provide a better understanding of these reactions because of the relative fidelity with which they can be characterized\, as well as the possibility for systematic testing of structure-function relationships through iterative molecular design. In addition to developing new Fe-\, Mn-\, and Cr-based molecular electrocatalysts for these reactions\, we are exploring the use of redox mediators and flow-based electrochemical reactors to understand how these reactions can be scaled relative to comparable heterogeneous systems.\n \nCharles Machan (University of Virginia)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Stress and Health in Context: The Role of Negative Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Stress and Health in Context: The Role of Negative Relationships\nWednesday\, April 28\, 1pm EDT: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98477632981\n\nA burgeoning literature shows social ties are integral for health and survival. Kira Birditt‘s program of research focuses on negative aspects of relationships including the extent to which they are irritating\, critical\, or demanding. In this talk she will discuss the findings from her program of research showing that: 1) There is a great deal of variability in negative aspects of relationships within and between individuals\, 2) Negative aspects of relationships have important implications for health that often vary by the context of stress\, and 3) The implications of relationships and stress vary race/ethnicity. She will also discuss the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations program that she leads and directions for future research.\n\nKira Birditt earned a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and B.A. and M.S. degrees in Psychology from Western Washington University. She serves as a Research Associate Professor at the Survey Research Center and the Director of the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations Program. She is currently PI on three R01 projects funded by NIA examining: 1) racial health disparities in stress\, social ties and health\, 2) racial inequities in health among Alzheimer’s caregivers\, and 3) alcohol use and cardiovascular health among aging couples.\n\nThis webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation\, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.
