(CANCELLED) John Moreland - Rescheduled from August 7, 2020 (April 25, 2021 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73604 73604-18269829@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 25, 2021 7:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

John Moreland started writing when he was ten years old, the same year his family moved from Kentucky, to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he still lives today. He's been slinging songs for more than half his life. He started fronting local punk and hardcore bands in high school. After graduation, he had an epiphany. "I'd just overexposed myself to punk and hardcore to the point that it just didn't do anything for me anymore," he says. The remedy? Americana songwriting. "I was 19 in 2004, and Steve Earle had put out 'The Revolution Starts Now,' and I remember hearing the song 'Rich Man's War' and totally feeling like somebody just punched me in the chest. Over the last half a dozen years or so, John's honesty has stunned us––and stung. As he put hurts we didn’t even realize we had or shared into his songs, we sang along. And we felt better. But there has always been far more to John Moreland than sad songs. Today, his earthbound poetry remains potent, but in addition to his world-weary candor, John's music smolders with gentle wisdom, flashes of wit and joy, and compassion. "I can’t dress myself up and be some folk singer character that I’m not really," John says. "I figured, I can’t dress up these songs and try to sell them that way. All I can do is be me." He returns from the 2020 Folk Festival with a new album, "LP5."

The University of Michigan Press Great Lakes author event for April is in honor of spring and Earth Day! Celebrate with us by learning about one of the most destructive invasive species to ever enter the Great Lakes, the sea lamprey, the history of the invasion, and monumental efforts to control them! We will be discussing the award-winning book "Great Lakes Sea Lamprey: The 70 Year War on a Biological Invader," by Cory Brant. There will be a Q&A with the author.

Cory Brant is a former post-doctoral researcher at the University of Michigan and Great Lakes Fishery Commission in Ann Arbor, Michigan. For over a decade, his work has focused on sea lampreys, particularly the species’ use of chemical communication and how to exploit that biology as a method of control.

This event will be in Zoom webinar and streamed to Facebook Live.

"Great Lakes Sea Lamprey" will be on sale for $13 and free shipping through the month of April. Just visit press.umich.edu and use the discount code "UMGL13BRANT" when you check out.

Implantable Neural Interfaces for Direct Control of Hand Prostheses (April 27, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/83793 83793-21530358@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 27, 2021 10:00am

State of the art robotic hands can mimic many functions of the human hand. These devices are a capable of actuating individual finger and multi-joint movements while providing adequate gripping force for daily activities. However, for patients with spinal cord injuries or amputations, there are few options to control these functions seamlessly or intuitively. A common barrier to restoring hand function to both populations is a lack of high-fidelity control signals. Non-invasive electrophysiological techniques record global summations of activity and lack the spatial or temporal resolution to extract or “decode” precise movement commands. The ability to decode finger movements from the motor system would allow patients to directly control hand functions and provide intuitive and scalable prosthetic solutions. This thesis investigates the capabilities of implantable devices to provide finger-specific commands for prosthetic hands. We adapt existing reasoning algorithms to two different sensing technologies.

The first is intracortical electrode arrays implanted into primary motor cortex of two non-human primates. Both subjects controlled a virtual hand with a regression algorithm that decoded their brain activity into finger kinematics. Performance was evaluated with a single degree of freedom target matching task. A state-of-the-art re-calibration approach improved performance, measured as bit rate, by an average of 33.1%. Notably, decoding performance was not dependent on subjects moving their intact hands. In future research, this approach can improve grasp precision for patients with spinal cord injuries.

The second sensing technology is intramuscular electrodes implanted into residual muscles and Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces of two patients with transradial amputations. Both participants used a high-speed pattern recognition system to switch between 10 individual finger and wrist postures in a virtual environment with an average success rate of 94.7% and a trial latency of 255 ms. When the set was reduced to five grasp postures, average metrics improved to 100% success and 135 ms latency. These results are a significant improvement over state-of-the-art systems that use surface electromyography as inputs. Furthermore, grasp performance remained reliable across arm positions and both participants used this controller to complete a functional assessment with robotic prostheses.
For a more dexterous solution, we combined the high-speed pattern recognition system with a regression algorithm that enabled simultaneous position control of both the index finger and middle-ring-small finger group. Both patients used this system to complete a virtual two degree of freedom target matching task with throughputs of 1.79 and 1.15 bits per second each. The controllers in this study used only four and five differentiated inputs, which can feasibly be processed with portable or implantable hardware.

These results demonstrate that implantable systems can provide patients with fluid and precise control of hand prostheses, eliminating the need to use movement substitutions and triggers to cycle through grip modes. However, clinically translatable implantable electronics need to be developed to realize the potential of these sensing and reasoning approaches. Further advancement of this technology will likely increase the utility and demand of robotic prostheses.

Schedule for Tuesday, April 27

2-2:45 pm
Opening Remarks: Disciplinarity and Knotty Problems

Patrice Rankine, Dean and Professor of Classical Studies, U. Richmond

In graduate school, my classmates and I joked about--and were impressed with--those students of the classics who seemed fully absorbed in some minute issue apart from this time and place, such as the use of particles in Thucydides. Without relegating philology to a mindset of escapism, we wondered simultaneously 1) what might motivate the full immersion in another place and time, and whether that was even possible; and 2) what it was about us that was unable to disentangle identity from the matter at hand, the text, the image, or even the word. Both directions 1) and 2) represent the knotty problems of our discipline of classics, its construction, its vaunt, and perhaps its rehabilitation in the present historical moment, should we choose the honest confrontation evident in the papers aligned at this symposium.

Abstract:
We present preliminary results on the pre-1940 diffusion of the passenger car in the U.S. and the world. The U.S. adopted the car much faster than other countries with roughly twice as many motor vehicles per capita as Canada. Within the U.S., car adoption was most rapid in California. In 1930, there were more cars in Los Angeles county than in Germany and Italy combined. Income and population density only partly explain California's lead. We are collecting individual-level data on car ownership in California starting in 1905 in order to understand who bought cars first and to investigate hypotheses for California's unusually rapid car adoption.

Earth-Abundant Molecular Catalyst Systems for the Reduction of Dioxygen and Carbon Dioxide (April 27, 2021 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83193 83193-21292752@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 27, 2021 4:00pm

The steady increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and corresponding atmospheric concentrations continues to generate interest in using CO2 as a liquid fuel and commodity chemical precursor. The conversion of CO2 has the dual benefit of addressing its associated negative environmental effects and the diminishing supply of petrochemical feedstocks. At the heart of efficient reductive transformations are proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions, where electrons and protons move in a concerted way to mitigate kinetic and thermodynamic penalties. Mechanistic understanding of these reactions can inform the design of optimized catalyst structures with improved activity and selectivity for specific products. Another cathodic reaction, the electrocatalytic reduction of dioxygen (O2), has relevance to the development of more efficient fuel cells and can be similarly optimized through fundamental knowledge of the underlying PCET reactions. Molecular systems are well-positioned to provide a better understanding of these reactions because of the relative fidelity with which they can be characterized, as well as the possibility for systematic testing of structure-function relationships through iterative molecular design. In addition to developing new Fe-, Mn-, and Cr-based molecular electrocatalysts for these reactions, we are exploring the use of redox mediators and flow-based electrochemical reactors to understand how these reactions can be scaled relative to comparable heterogeneous systems.

Stress and Health in Context: The Role of Negative Relationships
Wednesday, April 28, 1pm EDT: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98477632981

A burgeoning literature shows social ties are integral for health and survival. Kira Birditt‘s program of research focuses on negative aspects of relationships including the extent to which they are irritating, critical, or demanding. In this talk she will discuss the findings from her program of research showing that: 1) There is a great deal of variability in negative aspects of relationships within and between individuals, 2) Negative aspects of relationships have important implications for health that often vary by the context of stress, and 3) The implications of relationships and stress vary race/ethnicity. She will also discuss the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations program that she leads and directions for future research.

Kira Birditt earned a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University and B.A. and M.S. degrees in Psychology from Western Washington University. She serves as a Research Associate Professor at the Survey Research Center and the Director of the Aging and Biopsychosocial Innovations Program. She is currently PI on three R01 projects funded by NIA examining: 1) racial health disparities in stress, social ties and health, 2) racial inequities in health among Alzheimer’s caregivers, and 3) alcohol use and cardiovascular health among aging couples.

This webinar is part of a continuing series focusing on the research happening at ISR. If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu. This talk is being recorded and will be shared widely.

WEBINAR: From Rhetoric to Reality - Putting Patients at the Heart of Pharmaceutical Services & Systems (April 29, 2021 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/83639 83639-21446272@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 29, 2021 9:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Ross

Access to essential medicines remains a critical challenge for patients in many parts of the world. Strengthening pharmaceutical supply chains, while vitally important, must be complemented by efforts to strengthen related pharmaceutical services and systems in ways that put patient needs first.

When pharmaceutical systems and services – from policies and regulations to distribution and dispensing practices – are centered around and responsive to patient needs, the system can work better to achieve improved health outcomes and address critical challenges such as antimicrobial resistance. Ultimately, patient-centered approaches help build trust in health systems, encourage appropriate use of medicines, and make pharmaceutical services more responsive and effective.

Convened by the Global Health Supply Chain Summit group, this webinar will bring together private- and public-sector experts across the pharmaceutical supply chain to explore the latest in advancing patient-centered pharmaceutical services in low- and middle-income countries and opportunities to take the discussion from rhetoric to reality.

Historically, Cold War Area Studies and the nationalization of Ethnic Studies have contributed to an Orientalist arrangement in which “their” pasts and contemporary conditions have been separated from “ours.” For example, scholars of Asia are not supposed to teach about North American issues, let alone conduct research across national formations. However, this sequestering of “ourselves” from “them” has become increasingly untenable due to globalization and massive demographic changes in North America. This webinar discusses the challenges and possible methods for breaking through the separation of area studies (especially Japanese studies and East Asian studies) and ethnic studies by discussing two courses that I regularly teach -- “Colonialisms in Asia” and “The Asia-Pacific Wars” -- in which race, sex, gender and imperialism are key themes. These are modern phenomena that trouble the regions we Asia “experts” study and the places in which we live, teach and work. But an obscene screen sequesters these two knowledge formations, making it difficult for scholars of Asia to teach critically about racism in North America as well as about the U.S. and Canada as empires. While we Asia “experts” are normally assigned to study the people and nations “over there,” this webinar proposes that we need to refuse the disciplinary practices that the Cold War University has imposed upon us. The webinar will also propose that while important, linking Asian and Asian North American studies can only be one part of confronting the global problems of racism and empires.

Takashi Fujitani is a Professor in Asia-Pacific Studies at the University of Toronto. His research is focused on the intersections of nationalism, race, gender, war, and memory in East Asian history and Asian American history.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

Interpretable and Realtime Predictions of Social Interactions for Autonomous Vehicles (April 29, 2021 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83792 83792-21530357@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 29, 2021 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Robotics

Autonomous vehicles present an opportunity to transform transportation. The benefits range from increased access to mobility and time freed from driving, to greater safety due to automation. These robots are powered by the coordination of various systems to perceive the world and effect motion control. Crucially, the autonomous vehicle operates in an open environment alongside fellow road users with whom it will interact regularly. Predictions of fellow road users' intents and future motion guide these interactions and specify a large part of the autonomous vehicle's behavior. Spurred by advances in deep learning, recent prediction methods have increasingly begun to consider how interactions affect future motion in ever more varied environments. The corresponding gains in accuracy translate to more anticipatory and less reactive autonomous vehicle behavior. One drawback is an increase in complexity, which can lead to less interpretable predictions and behavior. Achieving realtime performance and handling missing data caused by adverse sensing conditions present additional challenges.

To support autonomous vehicle behavior that is transparent and predictable, this thesis develops interpretable prediction methods. Model-based approaches provide the vehicle for building interpretable predictions, and novel inference procedures are developed to generate the predictions in realtime. Adopting a probabilistic framework enables natural handling of missing data and affords the flexibility to model interactions in varied environments beyond those described by existing interpretable methods. Experiments on real highway traffic and urban data demonstrate the developed methods' effectiveness.

Co-registering, chronic, and naturalistic assessments of the electrophysiological and behavioral features of the murine stress response can teach us how stress-behaviors are mechanistically driven by electrophysiological activity in neural circuits, how those relationships change over the course of the multi-week developing response to chronic ongoing stress, and how these changes ultimately contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of major depressive disorder and other psychiatric conditions. However, the long duration and multiplexed nature of the murine stress response have long been barriers to achieving such understandings. To address the need for technology that better captures the time progression of the murine stress response, we engineered the first-ever chronic recording system capable of gathering both behavioral and electrophysiological data in a naturalistic environment for freely-moving mice. Building from previous unpublished work at our lab, we first developed 16 units of a novel photointerrupter-based, Arduino-controlled digital phenotyping system capable of simultaneously recording 50+ behavioral metrics at a sub-second resolution continuously for weeks at a time. Subsequently, with the goal of assisting the concurrent exploration of brain mechanisms and behavior, we engineered a scaffold and cabling structure to support an ultra low-resistance commutator that allows chronic, multi-region brain electrophysiological recordings and integrated it into our digital behavioral phenotyping system. Our novel co-recording system is now fully operational and, along with allowing chronic electrophysiological recordings, supports measures of eating, drinking, food and sugary drink preference (a measure of anhedonia), locomotor activity, sleep, and actigraphy, all the while using 24/7 video tracking to allow detailed classification of behaviors at sub-second resolution. The system is also compatible with standard assessments in the field, including daily weight and fur checks. To demonstrate the duration of its co-recording capabilities, we implanted a cohort of mice with electrodes in three brain regions involved in the murine stress response – olfactory bulb, dorsal hippocampus, and medial prefrontal cortex – and recorded for five weeks. This is the first system to ever produce highly dense behavioral and electrophysiological data simultaneously and continuously over such a period of time.

Engineering Disaster-Resilient Systems in an Uncertain Future with Jack Baker (April 30, 2021 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83856 83856-21555870@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 30, 2021 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Civil and Environmental Engineering

There are several radical changes underway in the design of the built environment to resist disasters. First, the traditional practice of designing only for occupant safety is being questioned. Societal stakeholders are increasingly also demanding that our facilities and infrastructure recover rapidly and for reasonable costs. Achieving these demands requires a deeper understanding of the recovery process, and of the interaction between the built environment and human systems. Second, climate change, rapid urbanization, and other drivers mean that our past experience with disasters is no longer a direct guide for what we will experience in the future. Achieving future performance targets thus requires new predictive techniques and tools to design for performance objectives. In this seminar, Dr. Baker will discuss these changes, and describe some research underway to advance our ability to create a disaster-resilient built environment.

Jack Baker’s work focuses on the development and use of probabilistic and statistical tools for managing risk due to extreme loads on the built environment. He studies risk to spatially distributed systems, characterization of earthquake ground motions, and probabilistic risk assessments for a number of types of structures. Professor Baker joined Stanford in 2006 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), where he was a visiting researcher in the Department of Structural Engineering. He has degrees in Structural Engineering (Stanford, M.S. 2002, Ph.D. 2005), Statistics (Stanford, M.S. 2004) and Mathematics/Physics (Whitman College, B.A. 2000). His awards include the Shah Family Innovation Prize from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, the Early Achievement Research Award from the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability, the Walter L. Huber Prize from ASCE, the Helmut Krawinkler Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California, and the Eugene L. Grant Award for excellence in teaching from Stanford.

Although many colleges and universities continue to affirm the importance of inclusive practices and resources for all students, LGBTQ+ undergraduates remain at a unique ever-increasing risk for mental health problems. Identifying and implementing best evidence-based practices for promoting well-being can mitigate the detrimental effects of individual, institutional, and systemic obstacles that LGBTQ students face. (In Progress): LGBTQ+ College Students and Mental Health Possibilities brings together five scholars and clinicians on the cutting edge of research solutions for LGBTQ+ collegiate communities.

Featuring Drs. Kirstin Byrd (researcher), Ryan Miller (faculty at UNC Charlotte), Francisco Sánchez (faculty at Mizzou), Brett Scofield (associate director of CAPS at Penn State), Dan Delmonaco (PhD student at University of Michigan), and ominira mars (master's student at University of San Francisco).

(In Progress) is a series that elevates diversity scholarship in response to crisis. We explore ways that scholars mobilize resources to build reparative research relationships, meet urgent needs in their communities and encourage ethical practices of dissemination. Join us for conversations with our small grant awardees and their collaborators about the need to act now.

Saturday Sampler tours are back! We've missed you and are thrilled to be offering our Saturday Sampler tours virtually. Join us over Zoom to explore the Kelsey Museum from the comfort of your home.

The theme of this week's tour is "Egyptian Burial Practices and the Afterlife."
The ancient Egyptians believed in a happy and eternal afterlife, and their burial practices reflected this. Mummification preserved the bodies of the deceased so they could enjoy the food and grave goods buried with them. Decorations on tomb walls depicted banquets, harvests, and other lovely scenes of what might lie ahead. This Zoom tour will examine some aspects of ancient Egyptian burial practices using artifacts from the Kelsey's collection as well as images of artifacts in several other museums.
