SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:WEBINAR: From Rhetoric to Reality - Putting Patients at the Heart of Pharmaceutical Services & Systems
DESCRIPTION:Access to essential medicines remains a critical challenge for patients in many parts of the world. Strengthening pharmaceutical supply chains\, while vitally important\, must be complemented by efforts to strengthen related pharmaceutical services and systems in ways that put patient needs first. \n\nWhen pharmaceutical systems and services – from policies and regulations to distribution and dispensing practices – are centered around and responsive to patient needs\, the system can work better to achieve improved health outcomes and address critical challenges such as antimicrobial resistance. Ultimately\, patient-centered approaches help build trust in health systems\, encourage appropriate use of medicines\, and make pharmaceutical services more responsive and effective. \n\nConvened by the Global Health Supply Chain Summit group\, this webinar will bring together private- and public-sector experts across the pharmaceutical supply chain to explore the latest in advancing patient-centered pharmaceutical services in low- and middle-income countries and opportunities to take the discussion from rhetoric to reality. \n\nIntroduction by: Ravi Anupindi\, Professor of Technology & Operations\, Ross School of Business\nModerated by: Lloyd Matowe\, Chair\, People that Deliver\; Director\, Pharmaceutical Systems Africa \nPROGRAM SPEAKERS\n•	Suneeta Sharma\, Vice President\, Health Practice and Director\, Health Policy Plus Project\, Palladium \n•	Neimatu D. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy | Challenges and Opportunities for a Historian of Japan Teaching about Race and Imperialism
DESCRIPTION:Advance registration for this Zoom webinar is required: https://myumi.ch/jxED9\n\nPart of the Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy webinar series: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/jsap/webinars/\n\nHistorically\, Cold War Area Studies and the nationalization of Ethnic Studies have contributed to an Orientalist arrangement in which “their” pasts and contemporary conditions have been separated from “ours.” For example\, scholars of Asia are not supposed to teach about North American issues\, let alone conduct research across national formations. However\, this sequestering of “ourselves” from “them” has become increasingly untenable due to globalization and massive demographic changes in North America. This webinar discusses the challenges and possible methods for breaking through the separation of area studies (especially Japanese studies and East Asian studies) and ethnic studies by discussing two courses that I regularly teach -- “Colonialisms in Asia” and “The Asia-Pacific Wars” -- in which race\, sex\, gender and imperialism are key themes. These are modern phenomena that trouble the regions we Asia “experts” study and the places in which we live\, teach and work. But an obscene screen sequesters these two knowledge formations\, making it difficult for scholars of Asia to teach critically about racism in North America as well as about the U.S. and Canada as empires. While we Asia “experts” are normally assigned to study the people and nations “over there\,” this webinar proposes that we need to refuse the disciplinary practices that the Cold War University has imposed upon us. The webinar will also propose that while important\, linking Asian and Asian North American studies can only be one part of confronting the global problems of racism and empires.\n \nTakashi Fujitani is a Professor in Asia-Pacific Studies at the University of Toronto. His research is focused on the intersections of nationalism\, race\, gender\, war\, and memory in East Asian history and Asian American history.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Interpretable and Realtime Predictions of Social Interactions for Autonomous Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Autonomous vehicles present an opportunity to transform transportation. The benefits range from increased access to mobility and time freed from driving\, to greater safety due to automation. These robots are powered by the coordination of various systems to perceive the world and effect motion control. Crucially\, the autonomous vehicle operates in an open environment alongside fellow road users with whom it will interact regularly. Predictions of fellow road users' intents and future motion guide these interactions and specify a large part of the autonomous vehicle's behavior. Spurred by advances in deep learning\, recent prediction methods have increasingly begun to consider how interactions affect future motion in ever more varied environments. The corresponding gains in accuracy translate to more anticipatory and less reactive autonomous vehicle behavior. One drawback is an increase in complexity\, which can lead to less interpretable predictions and behavior. Achieving realtime performance and handling missing data caused by adverse sensing conditions present additional challenges.\n\nTo support autonomous vehicle behavior that is transparent and predictable\, this thesis develops interpretable prediction methods. Model-based approaches provide the vehicle for building interpretable predictions\, and novel inference procedures are developed to generate the predictions in realtime. Adopting a probabilistic framework enables natural handling of missing data and affords the flexibility to model interactions in varied environments beyond those described by existing interpretable methods. Experiments on real highway traffic and urban data demonstrate the developed methods' effectiveness.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Master's Defense: Ivo Cerda
DESCRIPTION:Co-registering\, chronic\, and naturalistic assessments of the electrophysiological and behavioral features of the murine stress response can teach us how stress-behaviors are mechanistically driven by electrophysiological activity in neural circuits\, how those relationships change over the course of the multi-week developing response to chronic ongoing stress\, and how these changes ultimately contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of major depressive disorder and other psychiatric conditions. However\, the long duration and multiplexed nature of the murine stress response have long been barriers to achieving such understandings. To address the need for technology that better captures the time progression of the murine stress response\, we engineered the first-ever chronic recording system capable of gathering both behavioral and electrophysiological data in a naturalistic environment for freely-moving mice. Building from previous unpublished work at our lab\, we first developed 16 units of a novel photointerrupter-based\, Arduino-controlled digital phenotyping system capable of simultaneously recording 50+ behavioral metrics at a sub-second resolution continuously for weeks at a time. Subsequently\, with the goal of assisting the concurrent exploration of brain mechanisms and behavior\, we engineered a scaffold and cabling structure to support an ultra low-resistance commutator that allows chronic\, multi-region brain electrophysiological recordings and integrated it into our digital behavioral phenotyping system. Our novel co-recording system is now fully operational and\, along with allowing chronic electrophysiological recordings\, supports measures of eating\, drinking\, food and sugary drink preference (a measure of anhedonia)\, locomotor activity\, sleep\, and actigraphy\, all the while using 24/7 video tracking to allow detailed classification of behaviors at sub-second resolution. The system is also compatible with standard assessments in the field\, including daily weight and fur checks. To demonstrate the duration of its co-recording capabilities\, we implanted a cohort of mice with electrodes in three brain regions involved in the murine stress response – olfactory bulb\, dorsal hippocampus\, and medial prefrontal cortex – and recorded for five weeks. This is the first system to ever produce highly dense behavioral and electrophysiological data simultaneously and continuously over such a period of time.\n\n\nDetails:\nDATE: Friday\, April 30\, 2021\nTIME: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm\nLOCATION: Zoom https://umich.zoom.us/j/93571968494)\nChair Committee: Brendon Watson\, Tim Bruns\, Cindy Chestek

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Engineering Disaster-Resilient Systems in an Uncertain Future with Jack Baker
DESCRIPTION:There are several radical changes underway in the design of the built environment to resist disasters. First\, the traditional practice of designing only for occupant safety is being questioned. Societal stakeholders are increasingly also demanding that our facilities and infrastructure recover rapidly and for reasonable costs. Achieving these demands requires a deeper understanding of the recovery process\, and of the interaction between the built environment and human systems. Second\, climate change\, rapid urbanization\, and other drivers mean that our past experience with disasters is no longer a direct guide for what we will experience in the future. Achieving future performance targets thus requires new predictive techniques and tools to design for performance objectives. In this seminar\, Dr. Baker will discuss these changes\, and describe some research underway to advance our ability to create a disaster-resilient built environment.\n\nJack Baker’s work focuses on the development and use of probabilistic and statistical tools for managing risk due to extreme loads on the built environment. He studies risk to spatially distributed systems\, characterization of earthquake ground motions\, and probabilistic risk assessments for a number of types of structures. Professor Baker joined Stanford in 2006 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich)\, where he was a visiting researcher in the Department of Structural Engineering. He has degrees in Structural Engineering (Stanford\, M.S. 2002\, Ph.D. 2005)\, Statistics (Stanford\, M.S. 2004) and Mathematics/Physics (Whitman College\, B.A. 2000). His awards include the Shah Family Innovation Prize from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute\, the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation\, the Early Achievement Research Award from the International Association for Structural Safety and Reliability\, the Walter L. Huber Prize from ASCE\, the Helmut Krawinkler Award from the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California\, and the Eugene L. Grant Award for excellence in teaching from Stanford.\n\nPanelists:\n\nSherif El-Tawil\, Antoine E. Naaman Collegiate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, University of Michigan\nChris Poland\, Consulting Engineer

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:(In Progress) LGBTQ+ College Students and Mental Health Possibilities
DESCRIPTION:Although many colleges and universities continue to affirm the importance of inclusive practices and resources for all students\, LGBTQ+ undergraduates remain at a unique ever-increasing risk for mental health problems. Identifying and implementing best evidence-based practices for promoting well-being can mitigate the detrimental effects of individual\, institutional\, and systemic obstacles that LGBTQ students face. (In Progress): LGBTQ+ College Students and Mental Health Possibilities brings together five scholars and clinicians on the cutting edge of research solutions for LGBTQ+ collegiate communities.\n\nFeaturing Drs. Kirstin Byrd (researcher)\, Ryan Miller (faculty at UNC Charlotte)\, Francisco Sánchez (faculty at Mizzou)\, Brett Scofield (associate director of CAPS at Penn State)\, Dan Delmonaco (PhD student at University of Michigan)\, and ominira mars (master's student at University of San Francisco).\n\n(In Progress) is a series that elevates diversity scholarship in response to crisis. We explore ways that scholars mobilize resources to build reparative research relationships\, meet urgent needs in their communities and encourage ethical practices of dissemination. Join us for conversations with our small grant awardees and their collaborators about the need to act now.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Virtual Saturday Sampler Tour | Egyptian Burial Practices and the Afterlife
DESCRIPTION:Saturday Sampler tours are back! We've missed you and are thrilled to be offering our Saturday Sampler tours virtually. Join us over Zoom to explore the Kelsey Museum from the comfort of your home.\n\nThe theme of this week's tour is \"Egyptian Burial Practices and the Afterlife.\"\nThe ancient Egyptians believed in a happy and eternal afterlife\, and their burial practices reflected this. Mummification preserved the bodies of the deceased so they could enjoy the food and grave goods buried with them. Decorations on tomb walls depicted banquets\, harvests\, and other lovely scenes of what might lie ahead. This Zoom tour will examine some aspects of ancient Egyptian burial practices using artifacts from the Kelsey's collection as well as images of artifacts in several other museums.\n\nZoom link:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/98615763784

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RNA Seminar featuring: Olivia Rissland\, University of Colorado School of Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Registration Required: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_vA9zYS5nSEenf8Zmt1f-qA\n\n\nABSTRACT: The maternal-to-zygotic transition (MZT) is a conserved step in animal development\, where control is passed from the maternal to the zygotic genome. Although the MZT is typically considered from its impact on the transcriptome\, we previously found that three maternally deposited Drosophila RNA binding proteins (ME31B\, Trailer Hitch [TRAL]\, and Cup) are also cleared during the MZT by unknown mechanisms. Here\, we show that these proteins are degraded by the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Marie Kondo\, an E2 conjugating enzyme\, and the E3 CTLH ligase are required for the destruction of ME31B\, TRAL\, and Cup. Structure modeling of the Drosophila CTLH complex suggests that substrate recognition is different than orthologous complexes. Despite occurring hours earlier\, egg activation mediates clearance of these proteins through the Pan Gu kinase\, which stimulates translation of Kondo mRNA. Clearance of the maternal protein dowry thus appears to be a coordinated\, but as-yet underappreciated\, aspect of the MZT.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhD Defense: Jonas Schollenberger
DESCRIPTION:Cerebrovascular occlusive disease (CVOD) is a major risk factor for ischemic stroke and is characterized by the presence of stenosis in the arteries supplying the brain. The cerebral vasculature has an innate ability to compensate for flow reductions\, caused by the presence of CVOD\, through a network of collateral pathways in the circle of Willis (CoW). However\, flow compensation is highly patient-specific and dependent on the cerebral vasculature anatomy\, availability of collateral pathways\, degree of stenosis and\, the condition of the cerebral microcirculation and its autoregulatory response. Unfortunately\, clinically available imaging tools only provide limited information on flow compensation and the underlying cerebral hemodynamics. Given the complexity of the cerebral vasculature\, better tools are necessary to characterize cerebral hemodynamics and guide the risk assessment of ischemic stroke.\n\n \n\nImage-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) provides a powerful tool for non-invasively analyzing cerebral hemodynamics with high spatial and temporal resolutions. However\, CFD modeling of cerebral hemodynamics is challenging due to the need for patient-specific data to calibrate outflow boundary conditions in the brain. In this thesis\, we explore a novel strategy to quantitatively characterize cerebral hemodynamics using CFD in combination with tissue perfusion from arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI.\n\n \n\nFirstly\, we quantified territorial perfusion in the cerebral circulation through implementing and optimizing a vessel-selective arterial spin labeling (VS-ASL) sequence. VS-ASL is generally limited by its low labeling efficiency causing poor signal-to-noise ratio. We investigated the effects of off‐resonance\, pulsatility\, and vessel movement\, and evaluated methods to maximize labeling efficiency and overall image quality. We found that an off-resonance calibration scan in combination with cardiac-triggering significantly improved labeling efficiency and image quality. Vessel movement during the MRI protocol occurred in the majority of study subjects and needs to be accounted for to maximize labeling efficiency.\n\n \n\nSecondly\, we developed a strategy to calibrate patient-specific CFD models of cerebral blood flow. The calibration consisted of estimating the total inflow to the CoW from PC-MRI and the flow splits in the CoW from non-selective ASL perfusion images. The outflow boundary conditions were iteratively tuned to match the estimated flow splits\, and the ASL-calibrated CFD model was then validated against territorial perfusion maps from VS-ASL by calculating the blood supply to each cerebral territory using Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT). We found an overall good match in a small group of subjects\; particularly\, the flow compensation between hemispheres was captured well by the calibrated CFD models.\n\n \n\nThirdly\, we investigated the impact of two outflow boundary condition strategies\, an ASL-based and allometric-based calibration\, on cerebral hemodynamics. The ASL-based calibrated CFD analysis captured the flow compensation between hemispheres as measured with VS-ASL and lead to an approximately symmetrical flow distribution in the CoW. In contrast\, the allometric-based calibrated CFD analysis was unable to capture the collateral flow compensation\, which resulted in large differences in flow between hemispheres.\n\n \n\nFinally\, the clinical feasibility and capabilities of our proposed CFD analysis was demonstrated in two CVOD patients. The CFD analysis showed significant differences in cerebral hemodynamics between the patients despite similar degrees of stenosis severity\, highlighting the importance of a patient-specific assessment. Comparison of pre-operative and post-operative hemodynamics in one patient resulted in only minor changes following revascularization despite severe carotid stenosis. We demonstrated that our CFD analysis can provide detailed and quantitative information about hemodynamic impact of carotid stenosis and collateral flow compensation in the circle of Willis.\n\n\nDate: Tuesday\, May 4\, 2021\n\nTime: 3:00 PM\n\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/93059726229 (Zoom link requires prior registration)\n\nCo-Chairs: Dr. C. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Bugs as Drugs: Engineering Bacterial Biotherapeutics
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\n\nThe human body is a complex ecosystem supporting symbiotic relationships with thousands of microbial species. The ubiquity and importance of these commensal communities underscore their potential as an untapped reservoir of biological function\, and recent increased interest into commensal microbial species has led to countless insights in this field. Due to these efforts\, the opportunity now exists to capitalize on the increasingly sophisticated understanding of the human microbiota and expand research efforts beyond characterization\, toward engineering. Commensal microbes are already perfectly suited for safe and effective habitation and colonization of various physiological niches\; what remains is to harness their genomic plasticity and promote their capacity to function as robust biochemical factories. The Sirk Lab aims to engineer therapeutic capacity into commensal microorganisms to address unmet needs in human health\, with a specific focus on generating strains of human gut bacterial species that can produce disease-fighting biological compounds in the intestinal tract to address key limitations with current therapeutic approaches for important diseases such as recurrent gastrointestinal infections. We are also pursuing studies focused on respiratory disease in both humans and animals of agricultural relevance.\n\n \n\nBIO\n\nProf. Sirk received her AB in Biology from Occidental College in Los Angeles\, CA and her Ph.D. in Molecular and Medical Pharmacology from UCLA. Her doctoral studies focused on engineering antibody fragments for targeted tumor imaging using positron emission tomography. Her postdoctoral training began at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla\, CA\, where she continued to work with engineered antibodies while also performing detailed protein engineering studies to generate site-specific nucleases and recombinases for targeted genome modifications\, in the era immediately prior to the introduction of CRISPR-based gene editing technology. She then pursued further postdoctoral training at Stanford University where she first began to explore the world of commensal microbes by studying the role that gut bacteria play in the activation of drug-like dietary molecules. At the University of Illinois\, her research group aims to leverage the power of protein engineering\, therapeutic biomolecules\, and the ever-expanding opportunities of commensal microbial species and communities to address critical needs in disease prevention and treatment in humans\, animals\, insects\, and plants.\n\nHOSTS:\nMatthew Ostrowski\nThomas Schmidt\n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96357036922

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Book Launch & Conversation: \"The Arab and Jewish Questions: Geographies of Engagement in Palestine and Beyond\"
DESCRIPTION:Nineteenth-century Europe turned the political status of its Jewish communities into the “Jewish Question\,” as both Christianity and rising forms of nationalism viewed Jews as the ultimate other. With the onset of Zionism\, this “question” migrated to Palestine and intensified under British colonial rule and in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Zionism’s attempt to solve the “Jewish Question” created what came to be known as the “Arab Question\,” which concerned the presence and rights of the Arab population in Palestine. For the most part\, however\, Jewish settlers denied or dismissed the question they created\, to the detriment of both Arabs and Jews in Palestine and elsewhere.\n\nThis book brings together leading scholars to consider how these two questions are entangled historically and in the present day. It offers critical analyses of Arab engagements with the question of Jewish rights alongside Zionist and non-Zionist Jewish considerations of Palestinian identity and political rights. Together\, the essays show that the Arab and Jewish questions\, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in which they have become subsumed\, belong to the same thorny history. Despite their major differences\, the historical Jewish and Arab questions are about the political rights of oppressed groups and their inclusion within exclusionary political communities—a question that continues to foment tensions in the Middle East\, Europe\, and the United States. Shedding new light on the intricate relationships among Orientalism\, anti-Semitism\, Islamophobia\, colonialism\, and the impasse in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict\, this book reveals the inseparability of Arab and Jewish struggles for self-determination and political equality.\n\nBashir Bashir is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology\, Political Science\, and Communication at the Open University of Israel and a senior research fellow at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute. He is the co-editor of The Holocaust and the Nakba: A New Grammar of Trauma and History (Columbia University Press\, 2018).\n\nMoshe Behar holds a PhD from Columbia University and is Associate Professor and Programme Director\, Arabic & Middle Eastern Studies\, University of Manchester. The title of his chapter is “Competing Marxisms\, Cessation of (Settler) Colonialism\, and the One-State Solution in Israel/Palestine\,” in The Arab and Jewish Questions: Geographies of Engagementin Palestine and Beyond (Bashir Bashir & Leila Farsakh\, eds\, Columbia University Press).\n\nNEWBOOK20 will give a 20% discount \n\nAdvance Registration Required: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/3216131581216/WN_56Kv4OYQS76zlUHxi8j58g

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy | Confronting the “Ends” of Area: On Transpacific Accountability
DESCRIPTION:Advance registration for this Zoom webinar is required: https://myumi.ch/51ZvE\n\nPart of the Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy webinar series: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/jsap/webinars/\n\nHas Japanese Studies ever been a discipline? Who was it for? Conversations about its disciplinary survival continue and repeat attempts to contend with the deconstructive critique of “area.” According to reactions to the deconstructive critique of Area Studies\, which began its course in the 1980s\, we stand on the epistemological precipice of not simply the decline\, but the death of the disciplines that comprise\, for example\, “Asian Studies” and “Latin American Studies.” Yet\, efforts to undo Cold War era formations of knowledge production\, in turn\, have galvanized projects that seek to validate area studies through the rhetoric of their “re-birth\,” often in formats that purport an interdisciplinary awareness to the diversifying demographics of higher education.\n \nIn this webinar\, our aim will be to openly discuss the contradictions between the goal of “antiracist pedagogy” and the limits and possibilities of “Japanese Studies.” In emphasizing a framework of transpacific accountability that interrogates the “area” model through engaging critical race and Indigenous epistemologies\, the webinar proposes a confrontation with the perceived crisis of area fields as an opening for a way to rethink and re-orient antiracist pedagogy. Highlighting a comparative study of race across Japan and Latin America as a case for the transpacific framework\, the webinar introduces critical approaches to the histories of racism\, militarism\, nationalism\, capitalism\, and heterosexism in research and pedagogy across and after the “ends” of area.\n \nAndrea Mendoza is an Assistant Professor of Japanese and Comparative Literature at UC San Diego. Her research areas are in critical race studies\, transpacific studies\, and East Asian and Latin American literatures and visual cultures.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Visualizing Equality: African American Rights and Visual Culture in the 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:The fight for racial equality in the 19th century played out not only in marches and political conventions but also in the print and visual culture created and disseminated throughout the United States by African Americans. Advances in visual technologies—daguerreotypes\, lithographs\, cartes de visite\, and steam printing presses—enabled people to see and participate in social reform movements in new ways. African American activists seized these opportunities and produced images that advanced campaigns for black rights. \n\nIn this talk based on his book \"Visualizing Identity\,\" (University of North Carolina Press\, 2020) Aston Gonzalez charts the changing roles of African American visual artists as they helped build the world they envisioned. Understudied artists such as Robert Douglass Jr.\, Patrick Henry Reason\, James Presley Ball\, and Augustus Washington produced images to persuade viewers of the necessity for racial equality\, black political leadership\, and freedom from slavery. Moreover\, these activist artists’ networks of transatlantic patronage and travels to Europe\, the Caribbean\, and Africa reveal their extensive involvement in the most pressing concerns for black people in the Atlantic world. Their work demonstrates how images became central to the ways that people developed ideas about race\, citizenship\, and politics during the 19th century.\n\nRegister at myumi.ch/0WEk3\n\nAston Gonzalez is a historian of African American culture and politics during the long 19th century. He is an Associate Professor of History at Salisbury University. Gonzalez earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan.
