SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Tracking Hemispheric Violence through the Experiences of Nicaraguan Refugees
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be live streamed.\n\nIn 2018\, the Nicaraguan government repressed mass protests\, forcing some 100\,000 people into political exile. This lecture examines the experiences of refugees who fled to Costa Rica and the United States as an entry point for understanding webs of hemispheric violence rooted in capitalist accumulation and regional security and immigration policy. Refugees’ stories suggest that dominant narratives about the crisis elide the root causes of violence and any real vision of a more just future for the Americas.\n\nOur speaker\, Jennifer Goett is Associate Professor of Comparative Cultures and Politics at Michigan State University and author of Black Autonomy: Race\, Gender\, and Afro-Nicaraguan Activism (Stanford 2016). Her work examines grassroots social movements\, state violence\, land dispossession\, and infrastructure megaprojects in Central America. Her most recent project focuses on Nicaraguan asylum seekers in Costa Rica and the United States. In addition\, she works as a pro bono expert witness for asylum cases in U.S. immigration court.\n\nThis is the fourth a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Central America: Coffee to Caravans. The next lecture will occur May 11\, 2021. The title is: Economic Profile of Central America. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Medieval English Poetry
DESCRIPTION:This course will explore a sampling of medieval poems about a variety of topics. We will read mostly short lyric poems\, but one class will be dedicated to a longer chivalric romance. Our class sessions will be based in discussion about the poems\, many of which are anonymously written. We will read the poems in modern English\, with the original Middle English on hand. \n\nReadings will be pre-circulated each session. No previous experience with Middle English or poetry is required. \n\nInstructor Margo Kolenda- Mason is a PhD Candidate in English at UM\, where she studies medieval and renaissance literature.\n\nThe study group will meet Fridays from May 7 through June 11. Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhD Defense: Elissa Welle
DESCRIPTION:Neural interfaces create a connection between neural structures in the body and external electronic devices. Brain-machine interfaces and bioelectric medicine therapies rely on the seamless integration of neural interfaces with the brain\, nerves\, or spinal cord. However\, conventional neural interfaces cannot meet the demands of high channel count\, signal fidelity\, and signal longevity that these applications require.\n\n \n\nIn this thesis we characterized the damage resulting from conventional Utah arrays after multiple years of implantation in the cortex of a non-human primate. The neuron density around the electrode shanks was compared to the neuron density of nearby healthy tissue\, finding a 73% loss in density around the electrodes. The explanted arrays were imaged and characterized for forms of electrode surface inconsistency. Coating cracks\, tip breakage\, and parylene cracks were the most common inconsistency. A significantly higher number of tip breakage and coating crack occurrences were found on the edges of the arrays as compared to the middle. In this work\, we made clear the need for a minimally damaging alternative to the Utah electrode array.\n\n \n\nNeural interfaces composed of carbon fiber electrodes\, with a diameter of 6.8 microns\, could enable a more seamless integration with the body. Previous work resulted in an array of individuated carbon fiber electrodes that could record reliably high signal-to-noise ratio neural signals from the brain for several months. However\, the carbon fiber arrays were limited by only 30% of the electrodes recording neural signals\, despite inducing very minimal inflammation. Additionally\, it was relatively unknown if carbon fibers would make suitable long-term peripheral neural interfaces. Here\, we illustrate the potential of carbon fiber electrodes to meet the needs of a variety of neural applications.\n\n\n\nFirst\, we optimized state-of-the-art carbon fiber electrodes to reliably record single unit electrophysiology from the brain. By analyzing the previous manufacturing process\, the cause of the low recording yield of the carbon fiber arrays was identified as the consistency of the electrode tip. A novel laser cutting technique was developed to produce a consistent carbon fiber tip geometry\, resulting in a near tripling of recording yield of high amplitude chronic neural signals. The longevity of the carbon fiber arrays was also addressed. The conventional polymer coating was compared against platinum iridium coating and an oxygen plasma treatment\, both of which outperformed the polymer coating. In this work\, we customized carbon fiber electrodes for reliable\, long-term neural recording.\n\n \n\nSecondly\, we translated the carbon fiber technology from the brain to the periphery in an architecture appropriate for chronic implantation. The insertion of carbon fibers into the stiffer structures in the periphery is enabled by sharpening the carbon fibers. The sharpening process combines a butane flame to sharpen the fibers with a water bath to protect the base of the array. Sharpened carbon fibers recorded electrophysiology from the rat vagus nerve and feline dorsal root ganglia\, both structures being important targets for bioelectric medicine therapies. The durability of carbon fibers was also displayed when partially embedded carbon fibers in medical-grade silicone withstood thousands of repeated bends without fracture. This work showed that carbon fibers have the electrical and structural properties necessary for chronic application.\n\n \n\nOverall\, this work highlights the vast potential of carbon fiber electrodes. Through this thesis\, future brain-machine interfaces and bioelectric medicine therapies may utilize sub-cellular electrodes such as carbon fibers in medical applications.\n\n \n\nDate: Friday\, May 7\, 2021\n\nTime: 10:00 AM\n\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/95839545566 (Zoom link requires prior registration)\n\nChair: Dr. Cynthia Chestek\n\nFor Assistance or Questions\num-bme@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Fragmentation and Fragility at the Origins of Rome (and Other Iron Age Italian States)
DESCRIPTION:Archaeology is radically changing our understanding of the origins of Rome (and other Iron Age Italian states). The highly centralized foundation narratives based on the written sources are being replaced by a picture of fragmentation\, in which elite groups diffidently came to live together on future city sites. State institutions developed only very slowly and tentatively\, and frequently fell apart.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students who discuss their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:From Medical Image to Icon: How Art Can Heal a Broken Body
DESCRIPTION:Devan Stahl is an Assistant Professor of Bioethics in the Department of Religion at Baylor University. Her research interests include disability ethics\, medicine and the visual arts\, and theological bioethics. Dr. Stahl’s last book\, Imaging and Imagining Illness: Becoming Whole in a Broken Body is an edited volume examining the power of medical images on the experience of chronic illness and disability.\n\nAbstract: Many people will first learn they have an illness through a medical image such as an MRI\, but these images often deny the messiness\, ambiguities\, and the identity of the patient who is represented in them. In this presentation\, Devan Stahl explores how medical images have historically revealed the implicit theology of the culture in which they are produced. Today\, a growing number of artists with disabilities are transforming their medical images into works of art\, which raise deeply theological questions concerning what it means to be embodied and how our bodies relate to a transcendent God.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Promoting Gender Equity in the Professions: What Can We Learn from Academic Medicine?
DESCRIPTION:RSVP to receive Zoom link: cew.umich.edu/events/cewinspire-workshop-promoting-gender-equity-in-the-professions-what-can-we-learn-from-academic-medicine\n\nPresenter: Reshma Jagsi\, MD\, DPhil\, CEW+ 2020 Carol Hollenshead Inspire Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity & Social Change Award Winner\n\nThis session will provide an overview of the presenter’s journey to study the promotion of gender equity in medicine. Dr. Reshma Jagsi will discuss in detail the evidence that her research team and others have gathered to demonstrate the impact of the differential challenges that women in medicine face (unconscious biases\, gendered expectations of society\, and overt discrimination and harassment) and their evidence-based recommendations regarding: \n\n- how advocacy can lead both to the development of beneficial pipeline programs and policies governing work-life integration\;\n- the cultural transformation efforts of national organizations (like AAMC\, NIH\, the National Academies\, and TIME'S UP Healthcare) to promote gender equity and discourage sexual harassment\; and\n- using social media to build communities where individuals might once have been isolated as \"the only\" one of their demographic characteristics before.\n\nFollowing this\, Dr. Jagsi will moderate a panel of four esteemed colleagues from the medical school\, Dr. Dana Telem\, Dr. Eve Kerr\, Dr. Jack Iwashyna\, and Dr. Timothy Johnson. They will have an interactive discussion of insights that can be applied from their experiences in medicine to inform efforts to promote equity in the professions more generally.\n\nFormat:\n\nAn important starting point within this workshop will be an examination of our own culture and identity journey\, utilizing Milner’s (2010) Culture of Power framework to engage participants in small group discussion before larger themes are brought back to the larger group – issues related to educational disparities that originate within society when students are young\, yet lead into many of the inequities that are still highly visible within higher education.\n\nIn addition\, an integral part of the Inspire initiative is pairing advocacy\, social change\, and activism with skills that enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus and interconnectedness. A short guided Mindfulness Meditation practice will be incorporated into the program.\n\nReshma Jagsi\, MD\, DPhil.\, is the Newman Family Professor and Deputy Chair in the Department of Radiation Oncology and director of the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine at the University of Michigan. An internationally recognized clinical trialist and health services researcher in the field of breast cancer\, Dr. Jagsi has co-authored over 300 publications. She has also devoted a substantial portion of her service to the institution and her scholarly effort to promoting gender equity in academic medicine. She is a frequently invited lecturer on this subject\, having delivered keynote or plenary talks at the National Institutes of Health\, the National Academies\, the Association of American Medical Colleges\, the American Medical Association\, and for dozens of other institutions and medical specialty organizations in the US and abroad. Her investigations of women’s under-representation in senior positions in academic medicine and the mechanisms that must be targeted to promote equity have been funded by an NIH R01 grant and grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation\, Doris Duke Foundation\, AMA\, and other philanthropic funders. Active in organized medicine\, she has served on the Steering Committee of the AAMC’s Group on Women in Medicine in Science\, which recently recognized her with its Leadership Award.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Beyond the Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities for Changes in Education
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities for Changes in Education\nWednesday\, May 12 at 1pm EDT\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/96351558688\n\nAt the end of the school year in 2020 parents\, educators\, and researchers\, wondered how to deal with the “COVID slide” related to achievement and gains in learning due to schools shifting to virtual learning across the country. What we did not know at the time is that many schools would struggle to open at all in the Fall of 2020 and online and remote learning would continue to be one of the primary ways that children were educated for the rest of the 2020-21 school year. Today\, the question remains: What will parents\, educators\, and researchers need to consider regarding achievement and learning gains as children are likely to return to in-person schooling in Fall 2021? Dr. Pamela Davis-Kean will discuss her research on how homeschooling was discussed on social media\, the issues related to “holding back” or repeating a grade in primary school\, and how new proposed policies for free community college may be important for helping those in secondary education get extra time to develop skills for entry into a four-year college.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:As You Like It
DESCRIPTION:Watch online at https://myumi.ch/gjdKq\n\nDepartment of Musical Theatre\n\nAssistant Professor Malcolm Tulip guides the Department of Musical Theatre students in this expressionist approach to one of Shakespeare’s best-known romantic comedies. What might appear at first look to be a romantic game is at its roots a test of binary gender assignations and expectations\, made all the more interesting by the challenge of depicting romance when your actors must stay 6 feet apart.
