SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RNA Seminar featuring: Thomas Martinez\, Salk Institute for Biological Studies
DESCRIPTION:Registration Required: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_90RkcQTGQZa7ifQ8kbSdNQ\n\nKEYOWORDS: microprotein\, smORF\, ribosome profiling\n\nABSTRACT: Functional protein-coding small open reading frames (smORFs) are emerging as an important class of genes. Several smORF-encoded microproteins have been characterized and implicated in a variety of critical processes\, including regulation of mRNA decay\, DNA repair\, and muscle formation. Thus\, rigorous and comprehensive annotation of protein-coding smORFs is critical to our understanding of basic biology and physiology\, as well as disease. We recently developed an improved workflow that integrates de novo transcriptome assembly and ribosome profiling to overcome obstacles with previous methods to more confidently annotate thousands of novel smORFs across multiple human cell lines\, including hundreds encoded on putative non-coding RNAs. Over 1\,500 smORFs are found in two or more cell lines\, and ~40% lack a canonical AUG start codon. Evolutionary conservation analyses suggest that hundreds of smORF-encoded microproteins are likely functional. We also find that smORF-derived peptides are detectable on human leukocyte antigen complexes\, positioning smORFs as a source of novel antigens. The annotation of protein-coding smORFs radically alters the current view of the human genome’s coding capacity and will provide a rich pool of unexplored\, functional human genes.\n\nBIO: Thomas received his B.S. in Biological Engineering from MIT and trained in Prof. JoAnne Stubbe’s laboratory\, where he studied the mechanism of ribonucleotide reductase. He then recieved his Ph.D. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics from Caltech as an NIH NRSA predoctoral fellow under the mentorship of Prof. Peter Dervan. His thesis work focused primarily on characterizing the effects of DNA binding pyrrole-imidazole polyamides on DNA replication in prostate cancer cells. Thomas is currently an NIH NRSA postdoctoral fellow in Prof. Alan Saghatelian’s laboratory\, where he has developed an integrative platform combining ribosome profiling and de novo transcriptome assembly to discover functional smORF encoded microproteins in the human genome.

SUMMARY:Other:Unearthing Tulsa: 100 Years Later\, a conversation with Brent Staples\, Fred Conrad\, and Scott Ellsworth
DESCRIPTION:ouTube.\n \nMaybe you’ve heard of the Tulsa Race Massacre. It was one of the most horrific examples of white supremacist terrorism in the history of the United States and knowledge of the event was actively suppressed for over fifty years. From May 31 to June 1\, 1921\, the Massacre saw the murder of hundreds of Black residents of the Greenwood neighborhood—a bustling and vibrant community known then as Black Wall Street—and more than one-thousand homes and businesses burned to the ground.\n \nAs we approach the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre\, we invite you to revisit a moment in 1999 when the New York Times Magazine published Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Brent Staples' article \"Unearthing a Riot\,\" which was the most significant national media coverage of the event at the time. Portraits of survivors made by renowned photojournalist and U-M alumnus Fred Conrad accompanied this important essay. In this program\, Staples and Conrad will be joined by U-M professor\, best-selling author\, and historian Scott Ellsworth\, author of newly published book The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice\, who will facilitate a conversation that will expand our understanding of what has been involved in making the history of Tulsa more visible and\, by extension\, illuminating the ever-present reality of racial terror and the resiliency of Black communities in our country.\n \nAlso featuring an introduction by Matthew Countryman\, chair of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, and a Q&A facilitated by Jennifer Friess\, UMMA associate curator of photography.\n \nThis program will be livestreamed on YouTube at 4 p.m. on May 17. No registration required.   Brent Staples\, an editorial writer for The New York Times\, was awarded the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing. He is the author of the memoir Parallel Time and holds a Phd in Psychology from The University of Chicago.\n \nFred Conrad is a photographer specializing in photojournalism and portraiture. He holds his BFA in Photography from the University of Michigan and has made photographs for prestigious and far reaching news organizations such as Sygma\, Time Magazine\, Newsweek\, New York Magazine\, Rolling Stone\, Ms. Magazine and The New York Times. \n \nBorn and raised in Tulsa\, Scott Ellsworth has been writing about the Tulsa race massacre for forty-five years. His forthcoming book\, The Ground Breaking: An American City and Its Search for Justice\, will be published on May 18\, 2021. Ellsworth teaches in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan.\n \nThe Ground Breaking: an American City and its Search for Justice will be available for sale through the UMMA Shop (please call 734-647-0521)\, Literati Bookstore in Ann Arbor\, and Blackstone Bookstore in Ypsilanti. It will also be available through the Ann Arbor District Library. \n \nFor more information\, visit umma.umich.edu/unearthing-tulsa.\n\nThis program is presented by UMMA as part of our ongoing commitment to anti-racist action\, and organized in collaboration with the Museum’s longtime partner professor Scott Ellsworth and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies with support from Wallace House\, the Penny Stamps School of Art & Design\, the Ann Arbor District Library\, Blackstone Bookstore\, and Literati Bookstore.\n\nVisit Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism for a current exhibition that also takes up untold stories of the historical erasure of Black Americans and explores photography’s role in making visible people and histories that have been actively suppressed. \n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Microbiome Seminar: Developing and Applying a Microdroplet Co-Cultivation and Analysis Toolbox for Elucidating Microbiomes
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Xiaoxia (Nina) Lin\nAssociate Professor\, Dept. Chemical Engineering\n\nSpeaker Profile: Professor Lin’s research lies at the intersection of biology and engineering with a focus on microbial systems\, particularly microbial communities\, using systems biology and synthetic biology approaches. Her lab aims to employ engineering tools and skills such as microfluidics and quantitative modeling to help unlock mysteries of complex natural microbial communities\, especially those closely associated with environment and health issues (e.g. human microbiome). In parallel\, the research group exploits design principles nature utilizes and develops synthetic microbial consortia technologies to address critical needs faced by our society such as sustainable biofuel and chemical production.\n\nAbstract: Microbes are everywhere in nature and they live in diverse communities that show remarkable metabolic capabilities and robustness. One research thrust in my lab has been to employ engineering related tools to study these naturally occurring microbial consortia in order to discover underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms. In particular\, we have been developing a technological pipeline\, based on nanoliter-scale microfluidic droplets\, to co-cultivate sub-communities and characterize member interactions that shape the community structure and function. In this talk\, I will present a number of technological modules we have created and are developing. I’ll also discuss how we are applying this toolbox\, jointly with our collaborators\, to the investigation of several microbiomes closely related to human health or the environment.\n\nZoom Meeting: https://umich.zoom.us/j/92773919973

SUMMARY:Presentation:CGIS Winter Advising
DESCRIPTION:As studying abroad becomes more of a possibility for U-M students\, particularly for Winter 2022\, CGIS will be offering a 2-day Winter Advising event where students can learn more about major-specific programs such as programs in the environment\, pre-health\, and public health and interest-specific program sessions such as studying abroad in the UK and English-Taught programs in Asia to name few. The LSA Scholarship Office and the Office of Financial Aid will join us on May 20th to help answer questions you may have on funding your semester program abroad as well as walking you through the application process! First Step sessions will be offered each day of the event as well. Each info session will be interactive. Each session will offer an opportunity to interact with advisors and address questions or concerns you may have regarding study abroad. To get a general idea of participation\, please RSVP below and select info sessions that you'd be interested in. We'll send you a Zoom link as we get closer to the event! \n\nDISCLAIMER: With each passing term\, a small yet increasing number of our programs seem to offer the possibility of receiving students\, so CGIS proceeded with very cautious optimism that students will be able to study abroad in the coming academic year. CGIS and the University of Michigan continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation as it develops worldwide. Parents and other concerned parties who would like to receive this information should ask their students to share the updates with them. Students planning to participate in CGIS programs worldwide are advised to continue to closely monitor the latest developments and to adhere to any national and international public health directives issued by their host country or institution. CGIS will contact students who have opened or submitted an application to a CGIS program if and when updates are available.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:A Band for all Ages
DESCRIPTION:The Little Bands Music School is an innovative music program in which students learn music from a constructivist perspective. The program serves all ages including children as young as four and adults. \n\nThe foundation of the program is the multi-instrumental band program. Students join a 5-piece band. The instrumentation of the band is piano\, guitar\, bass\, drums and voice. Students follow a detailed curriculum of songs and compose their own songs. Every student learns every song on every instrument. This method is designed to facilitate an environment in which students understand music from different perspectives\, learn to collaborate\, and experience what goes into a piece of music and how to compose their own music.\n\nTeachers in Little Bands School work with private students and students in public and private schools in Southeast Michigan. We particularly love helping people who have always wanted to play an instrument and never had the chance.\n\nPresenter Joshua Grekin is a musician and educator with experience teaching all ages and genres. Trained as a jazz trumpet player\, he is also proficient on piano\, guitar\, bass\, drums\, and other orchestral instruments. Joshua has a BA in music from the Berklee College of Music\, a Masters from the Manhattan School of Music and is currently finishing his PhD at Oakland University. \n\nHe is the creator and director of the Little Bands School\, a tech-enabled music education program which offers a unique and innovative K-12 instrumental curriculum. A songwriter as well\, Joshua writes music for musicals\, film\, commercials\, bands\, and the Little Bands School curriculum.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Centennial Lecture Series: Sharon Parrott - Pandemic\, Relief\, and Building toward an Equitable Future
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Centennial Lecture Series featuring Michigan Social Work Alumna\, Sharon Parrott\, MSW '92.\n\nPandemic\, Relief\, and Building toward an Equitable Future: The health and economic crisis shined a light on and exacerbated longstanding problems that were in plain sight for those willing to see them long before COVID-19. The crisis made clear the weaknesses in our economic and health security programs that are supposed to protect people when hard times hit while also showing in the starkest terms the stark inequities across lines of race\, ethnicity\, gender\, and immigration that long pre-dated the pandemic. Parrott will talk about the impacts of the health and economic crisis across different groups\, both the strengths and weaknesses of our public response to the crisis\, the opportunity for long-term\, systemic policy changes that could broaden opportunity\, reduce poverty and inequality\, narrow disparities\, and move us toward universal health coverage\, and the challenges to achieving these policy goals. Parrott will also reflect on the “long arc” of policy change and the forces that can create and stymie change.\n\nFor more information and to register\, please visit our website: https://ssw.umich.edu/assets/centennial/?page=event-details&nid=62603

SUMMARY:Presentation:Western UP Wind Energy Webinar
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, May 19th at 6:30 pm\, Dr. Sarah Mills from the University of Michigan and Bradley Neumann from Michigan State University Extension will offer a webinar on the local impacts of wind energy projects\, specifically geared toward the Western UP.\n\nAs part of a grant from the Michigan Department of Environment\, Great Lakes\, and Energy (EGLE)\, the University of Michigan has created extensive online resources to help communities as they plan and zone for wind energy. The aim of these resources is to help communities understand the positive and negative impacts of wind projects so that they can make informed decisions about whether and where renewable energy might be appropriate in their township. Among the resources included is a sample zoning ordinance developed by MSU Extension. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Struggle to Survive in Central America: A Portrait of Life from a Grassroots\, Human Rights Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be live streamed.\n\nThis presentation will give an overview of the forces that impact the daily lives of Central Americans who are struggling to provide for their families in a context of poverty\, violence\, extractive industries and impunity. Especially highlighted will be the country of Honduras\, whose residents continue to try to flee to the U.S. Border out of desperation.\n\n\nMary Anne Perrone is an educator\, an activist and a spiritual guide. All her adult life she has been an activist for peace and justice. Her particular area of focus for over 30 years has been on human rights in Latin America. This work led their young family to live and work in Latin America in the late 1980’s (Bolivia) to accompany the poor there in a spirit of liberation. She has been working in the U.S. ever since to raise consciousness about our country’s role in human rights violations in Latin America and to work for substantive change in our foreign policy. In the last two decades\, this work has taken her on multiple human rights delegations to several Latin American countries\, connecting with and accompanying courageous people working in their own countries to defend those whose human rights are highly threatened. \n\nThis is the last of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Central America: Coffee to Caravans. OLLI’s lecture series will start again in September of 2021. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Prechter-Tam Bipolar Seminar Series: Pluripotent Stem Cell Models to Study Bipolar Disorder
DESCRIPTION:\"Characterization of stem cell-derived exosomes in bipolar disorder and their impact on recipient cells.\"\n\nBipolar disorder is a condition that involves the human brain. There is no easy access to brain tissue from living people.  Using induced pluripotent stem cells offers the first opportunity to model the activity of brain and nerve cells from individuals with bipolar disorder. Samples from skin are ‘induced’ to form pluripotent stem cells that can subsequently be prompted to grow into nerve cells.  Shortly after this technology was developed\, the Prechter Bipolar Research Program expanded to include Sue O’Shea\, PhD\, Professor\, in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology who works on pluripotent stem cells.  Individuals with a history of bipolar disorder and non-bipolar controls provided skin samples that were grown into stem cells and then nerve cells.  Over the past decade this work has expanded to include a multisite collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania\, the Salk Institute\, Sanford Burnham Institute\, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.  Several significant findings have included the consistent characteristic of premature excitability of nerve cells derived from individuals with bipolar disorder\, the abnormal behaviors of astrocytes\, and the apparent dysfunction of exosomes.  These patterns are leading towards the identification of target pathways that may be suitable for pharmaceutical intervention.  \n\nU-M PANEL DISCUSSION\n\nPanel Moderator: Melvin G.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy | Kaleidoscopic Vision: Okinawa Amidst Competing Transpacific Politics
DESCRIPTION:Advance registration for this Zoom webinar is required:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sCvvNSW5TpW6miJZxLtg7w\n \n Part of the Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy webinar series:\nhttps://sites.lsa.umich.edu/jsap/webinars/\n \n In the Asia Pacific\, the Ryukyu Kingdom was a major trading nation during the early modern period and Okinawa was the “Keystone of the Pacific” that served as a launching pad for America’s Cold War during the postwar era. The Satsuma domain invaded the Ryukyus in 1609 and turned it into a “hidden colony” vis-a-vis Ming/Qing China so that it could continue to funnel Chinese goods and culture into its domain via the Ryukyus without offending either China or the Tokugawa bakufu’s “closed country” (sakoku) policy. After the newly established Meiji government invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom and annexed it as Okinawa Prefecture in 1879\, it once again kept it as a “hidden colony” vis-a-vis the international community. Today\, modern Japan\, and now also the US\, continue to hide Okinawa’s colonial condition in order to concentrate US military bases on the islands in the interests of both.\n \n Ifa Fuyū (1876-1947)\, the “father of Okinawan studies\,” argued that Ryukyuan political and cultural life peaked in the 16th century when it could openly dazzle with the kaleidoscopic brilliance of all cultures that touched the lives of the Ryukyuan people. However\, from the 17th century forward\, Okinawa could only be seen in the ever shifting shadows of a constellation of moving sovereign states. Its dynamism—its “doubleness”—has been routinely flattened out into a singularity that is consumed by surrounding sovereign powers. This can be seen in Okinawa’s modern-day postcolonial predicament of a concentrated US military base presence that is enabled by the popular will of the Japanese people. For American statesmen\, Okinawa is simply “one part of Japan” and therefore not a US problem\, and for more progressive politics\, Okinawa is victim to US (military) imperialism and white supremacy. For Japanese statesmen\, Okinawa is simply ignored\, and for more progressive politics\, Okinawa is again victim to US (military) imperialism and white supremacy. However\, Okinawans have recently been problematizing the fact that it is the Japanese government who funds the US military bases and decides to concentrate them in Okinawa\, and the will of the Japanese people who are happy with this arrangement that guarantees Japanese economic and political stability.\n \n Hence\, when thinking of Okinawa transpacifically\, which Okinawa do we prioritize? The Okinawa in the shadows of the US\, or the Okinawa in the shadows of Japan? In this webinar\, I will put Ifa in conversation with his contemporary W.E.B. Du Bois to imagine a global politics of the color line in which doubleness is not suppressed but becomes a driving liberatory force for what Ifa called an “age of sweetness” (ama yū) after colonialism.\n \n Annmaria Shimabuku is the Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor at NYU. Her research is centered in the intersection of postcolonial Japanese Studies\, Okinawan Studies\, and literary/political theory.\n \nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Preventing Cambodia’s Genocidal Past from Becoming Afghanistan’s Future
DESCRIPTION:Organized with the Holocaust Memorial Center and The Donia Human Rights Center\n\nAfter nearly two decades of war in Afghanistan\, the U.S. government is engaged in talks with the Taliban as part of an effort to forge a peace settlement and wind down U.S. military commitment. Within Afghanistan\, government officials and ordinary citizens are fearful that an American exit could leave a beleaguered population at the mercy of the Taliban. How can the U.S. avoid a repeat of the 1975 Indochina withdrawal\, which contributed to the rise of Cambodia’s genocidal Khmer Rouge regime? Associate Professor of Public Policy\, John D. Ciorciari\, will discuss the ways in which governments and ordinary citizens can help reduce the risk of genocide.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Mindfulness in the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register: http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=uhlrs88ab&oeidk=a07ehwrxos4f0d29912.\n \nHave you ever wished you could have a more meaningful connection with art at UMMA? In this virtual experience\, we will explore a more contemplative approach to looking at art with a variety of guided mindfulness practices. As we rest our attention on our breath\, the body and heart relax while the mind quiets. We can experience what’s before with more spaciousness and also learn to trust our own experience. Led by meditation teacher and UMMA docent Laura Seligman. Beginner and experienced meditators welcome. The May sessions of Mindfulness at the Museum are presented by UMMA\, in partnership with MHealth and University Human Resources\, in honor of Mental Health Month. This year\, it's more important than ever to find ways to nurture and sustain meaningful connections. If you could benefit from talking to someone\, support is available year-round for all faculty and staff. Looking for support for students? Check out the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offices for students: CAPS Ann Arbor\, CAPS Dearborn\, CAPS Flint.\n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:What’s Next? Constellations & Orientations: New Ways to Think About Your Skills
DESCRIPTION:Understanding your skills is a crucial part of exploring careers and figuring out your next steps. But what do we actually mean when we talk about “skills”? This workshop will introduce a critical\, contextual\, and creative approach to skills that draws on your humanities training and experiences. You will leave with a personalized strategy for understanding what you’re good at—not just a generic list of skills. You will also have a chance to imagine how you can use your skills to make a positive impact on the world.\nThe session will be highly interactive\, with significant individual reflection as well as discussion (in breakout rooms and as a large group). To allow for an open dialogue\, this session will not be recorded.\nSpeaker: Derek Attig (they/them) is Assistant Dean for Career & Professional Development in the Graduate College at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to their work at Illinois\, Attig was part of the team that built the ImaginePhD career planning tool for humanists and social scientists and writes regularly for Inside Higher Ed’s Carpe Careers column. Before working in career development\, Attig advised graduate students at a teaching center and worked in nonprofit marketing. They earned a Ph.D. in history with a dissertation on the cultural history of bookmobiles in the United States.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/MEwqD.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.
