DESCRIPTION:The pandemic halted the in-person artwork selection typical of Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) exhibits. As an adaptation\, PCAP invited artists incarcerated in Michigan state prisons to create small-scale artwork and send their entries by mail. \n\nA link to the exhibit will be posted at https://myumi.ch/kxZ1D on May 19\, 2021.\n\nThe exhibit includes 141 artworks\, featuring a diversity of both artists and artistic choices. All the 2D artworks measure 4 in. x 6 in. and the 3D artworks no more than 4 in. x 6 in. x 4 in. \n\nArtwork sales appointments are available May 20–27\, 2021. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Struggle to Survive in Central America: A Portrait of Life from a Grassroots\, Human Rights Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be live streamed.\n\nThis presentation will give an overview of the forces that impact the daily lives of Central Americans who are struggling to provide for their families in a context of poverty\, violence\, extractive industries and impunity.  Especially highlighted will be the country of Honduras\, whose residents continue to try to flee to the U.S. Border out of desperation.\n\n\nMary Anne Perrone is an educator\, an activist and a spiritual guide.  All her adult life she has been an activist for peace and justice. Her particular area of focus for over 30 years has been on human rights in Latin America.  This work led their young family to live and work in Latin America in the late 1980’s (Bolivia) to accompany the poor there in a spirit of liberation.  She has been working in the U.S. ever since to raise consciousness about our country’s role in human rights violations in Latin America and to work for substantive change in our foreign policy.  In the last two decades\, this work has taken her on multiple human rights delegations to several Latin American countries\, connecting with and accompanying courageous people working in their own countries to defend those whose human rights are highly threatened.  \n\nThis is the last of a six-lecture series. The subject of the series is Central America: Coffee to Caravans. OLLI’s lecture series will start again in September of 2021. Learn from well-known experts about an array of interesting subjects\, with an interactive Q&A period following each lecture.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. SUMMARY:Presentation:Prechter-Tam Bipolar Seminar Series: Pluripotent Stem Cell Models to Study Bipolar Disorder
DESCRIPTION:\"Characterization of stem cell-derived exosomes in bipolar disorder and their impact on recipient cells.\"\n\nBipolar disorder is a condition that involves the human brain. There is no easy access to brain tissue from living people.  Using induced pluripotent stem cells offers the first opportunity to model the activity of brain and nerve cells from individuals with bipolar disorder. Samples from skin are ‘induced’ to form pluripotent stem cells that can subsequently be prompted to grow into nerve cells.  Shortly after this technology was developed\, the Prechter Bipolar Research Program expanded to include Sue O’Shea\, PhD\, Professor\, in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology who works on pluripotent stem cells.  Individuals with a history of bipolar disorder and non-bipolar controls provided skin samples that were grown into stem cells and then nerve cells.  Over the past decade this work has expanded to include a multisite collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania\, the Salk Institute\, Sanford Burnham Institute\, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.  Several significant findings have included the consistent characteristic of premature excitability of nerve cells derived from individuals with bipolar disorder\, the abnormal behaviors of astrocytes\, and the apparent dysfunction of exosomes.  These patterns are leading towards the identification of target pathways that may be suitable for pharmaceutical intervention.  \n\nU-M PANEL DISCUSSION\n\nPanel Moderator: Melvin G. DESCRIPTION:As studying abroad becomes more of a possibility for U-M students\, particularly for Winter 2022\, CGIS will be offering a 2-day Winter Advising event where students can learn more about major-specific programs such as programs in the environment\, pre-health\, and public health and interest-specific program sessions such as studying abroad in the UK and English-Taught programs in Asia to name few. The LSA Scholarship Office and the Office of Financial Aid will join us on May 20th to help answer questions you may have on funding your semester program abroad as well as walking you through the application process! Each session will offer an opportunity to interact with advisors and address questions or concerns you may have regarding study abroad. DESCRIPTION:Advance registration for this Zoom webinar is required:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sCvvNSW5TpW6miJZxLtg7w\n   \n   Part of the Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy webinar series:\nhttps://sites.lsa.umich.edu/jsap/webinars/\n   \n   In the Asia Pacific\, the Ryukyu Kingdom was a major trading nation during the early modern period and Okinawa was the “Keystone of the Pacific” that served as a launching pad for America’s Cold War during the postwar era. The Satsuma domain invaded the Ryukyus in 1609 and turned it into a “hidden colony” vis-a-vis Ming/Qing China so that it could continue to funnel Chinese goods and culture into its domain via the Ryukyus without offending either China or the Tokugawa bakufu’s “closed country” (sakoku) policy. After the newly established Meiji government invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom and annexed it as Okinawa Prefecture in 1879\, it once again kept it as a “hidden colony” vis-a-vis the international community. Today\, modern Japan\, and now also the US\, continue to hide Okinawa’s colonial condition in order to concentrate US military bases on the islands in the interests of both.\n   \n   Ifa Fuyū (1876-1947)\, the “father of Okinawan studies\,” argued that Ryukyuan political and cultural life peaked in the 16th century when it could openly dazzle with the kaleidoscopic brilliance of all cultures that touched the lives of the Ryukyuan people. However\, from the 17th century forward\, Okinawa could only be seen in the ever shifting shadows of a constellation of moving sovereign states. Its dynamism—its “doubleness”—has been routinely flattened out into a singularity that is consumed by surrounding sovereign powers. This can be seen in Okinawa’s modern-day postcolonial predicament of a concentrated US military base presence that is enabled by the popular will of the Japanese people. For American statesmen\, Okinawa is simply “one part of Japan” and therefore not a US problem\, and for more progressive politics\, Okinawa is victim to US (military) imperialism and white supremacy. For Japanese statesmen\, Okinawa is simply ignored\, and for more progressive politics\, Okinawa is again victim to US (military) imperialism and white supremacy. However\, Okinawans have recently been problematizing the fact that it is the Japanese government who funds the US military bases and decides to concentrate them in Okinawa\, and the will of the Japanese people who are happy with this arrangement that guarantees Japanese economic and political stability.\n   \n   Hence\, when thinking of Okinawa transpacifically\, which Okinawa do we prioritize? The Okinawa in the shadows of the US\, or the Okinawa in the shadows of Japan? In this webinar\, I will put Ifa in conversation with his contemporary W.E.B. Du Bois to imagine a global politics of the color line in which doubleness is not suppressed but becomes a driving liberatory force for what Ifa called an “age of sweetness” (ama yū) after colonialism.\n   \n   Annmaria Shimabuku is the Director of Graduate Studies and Associate Professor at NYU. Within Afghanistan\, government officials and ordinary citizens are fearful that an American exit could leave a beleaguered population at the mercy of the Taliban. How can the U.S. avoid a repeat of the 1975 Indochina withdrawal\, which contributed to the rise of Cambodia’s genocidal Khmer Rouge regime? Associate Professor of Public Policy\, John D. Ciorciari\, will discuss the ways in which governments and ordinary citizens can help reduce the risk of genocide.

In addition to their work at Illinois\, Attig was part of the team that built the ImaginePhD career planning tool for humanists and social scientists and writes regularly for Inside Higher Ed’s Carpe Careers column. Before working in career development\, Attig advised graduate students at a teaching center and worked in nonprofit marketing. DESCRIPTION:The pandemic halted the in-person artwork selection typical of Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) exhibits. As an adaptation\, PCAP invited artists incarcerated in Michigan state prisons to create small-scale artwork and send their entries by mail. \n\nA link to the exhibit will be posted at https://myumi.ch/kxZ1D on May 19\, 2021.\n\nThe exhibit includes 141 artworks\, featuring a diversity of both artists and artistic choices. All the 2D artworks measure 4 in. x 6 in. and the 3D artworks no more than 4 in. x 6 in. x 4 in. \n\nArtwork sales appointments are available May 20–27\, 2021. As an adaptation\, PCAP invited artists incarcerated in Michigan state prisons to create small-scale artwork and send their entries by mail. \n\nA link to the exhibit will be posted at https://myumi.ch/kxZ1D on May 19\, 2021.\n\nThe exhibit includes 141 artworks\, featuring a diversity of both artists and artistic choices. All the 2D artworks measure 4 in. x 6 in. and the 3D artworks no more than 4 in. x 6 in. x 4 in. \n\nArtwork sales appointments are available May 20–27\, 2021. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:How Subsidies Affect Contraceptive Use Among Low-Income Women in the U.S.: The M-CARES Randomized Control Trial
DESCRIPTION:Contact PSC Office for Zoom details.\n\n\nThis paper examines how subsidies affect the use of contraceptives among low-income women seeking reproductive health care in the U.S. Study participants were randomized to receive vouchers for contraception\, covering up to 50% or 100% of the lowest-cost\, available long-acting\, reversible contraceptive method (LARC). Women’s choice of method is highly sensitive to price\, with the elasticity of LARC take-up ranging from -2.3 to -3.4. The findings imply that a U.S. policy eliminating out-of-pocket costs for Title X women would reduce pregnancies by 5.4%\, birth rates by 3.5%\, and abortions by 8.1% and save $2.48 billion annually in public expenditures.  \n\nBIO: Vanessa Wanner Lang received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Bowling Green State University in 2019. She joined the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan in 2019 as the project manager for the Michigan Contraceptive Access\, Research\, and Evaluation Study (M-CARES). Dr. Lang was trained as a family demographer and sociologist and has research interests in fertility\, work and family\, parent and child relationships\, gender\, and well-being. One line of her research centers on studying fertility behaviors with a specific focus on unintended childbearing in the United States and the policy implications surrounding access to contraception for women and children’s outcomes. These conversations have entered public discourse through discussions of the objects looted from Benin City in 1897. Yet\, questions of African collections extend beyond the Benin case. Each collection has its own specific histories and presents unique challenges for museum professionals. \n \nJoin this program organized by the Fowler Museum at UCLA that features curators from the Fowler\, New Orleans Museum of Art\, and University of Michigan Museum of Art for presentations and a panel discussion about current approaches and examples of work happening in museums today. The program will be moderated by Sylvester Okwunodu Ogbechie.\n \nThis program is generously supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\n \nLaura De Becker is the Interim Chief Curator and the Helmut and Candis Stern Curator of African Art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). A specialist in Central African art\, she joined UMMA after a fellowship at Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg\, South Africa. De Becker has been working for many years with a team to reinstall UMMA’s permanent African collection\, which will double the footprint of the African gallery and has prompted a separate project grappling with issues of restitution entitled\, Wish You Were Here. \n \nNdubuisi C. Ezeluomba is the Francois Billion Richardson curator of African art at the New Orleans Museum of Art. He received his doctorate in Art History from the University of Florida\, Gainesville\, and specializes in the visual cultures of shrines\, having contributed articles and book chapters on the topic to various publications. He also writes on the museum and the politics of acquisition. \n \nCarlee S. Forbes is the Mellon Curatorial Fellow at the Fowler Museum\, where she researches the African objects donated by the Wellcome Trust in 1965. Forbes received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked with the Ackland Art Museum\, the North Carolina Museum of Art\, and the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art. Her research focuses on art produced during the colonial period in the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, museum and collecting histories\, and issues of provenance. \n \nErica P. Jones is Curator of African Arts at the Fowler Museum. She received her Ph.D. in Art History from UCLA. Since joining the Fowler Museum in 2015\, Jones has organized several exhibitions. In 2018\, she curated a solo exhibition of Botswana-born painter Meleko Mokgosi\, Bread\, Butter\, and Power\, and authored the accompanying publication. Her 2019 exhibition\, On Display in the Walled City: Nigeria at the British Empire Exhibition\, 1924–1925\, directly relates to the research conducted by the Fowler’s Mellon team. \n \nSylvester Okwunodu Ogbechie is Professor of African and African Diaspora Arts in the Department of History of Art and Architecture\, University of California\, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on modern and contemporary African art\, cultural informatics\, and the arts and cultural patrimony of Africa and the African diaspora in the age of globalization. He is the author of Ben Enwonwu: The Making of An African Modernist (2008)\, Making History: African Collectors and the Canon of African Art (2011)\, and founder-editor of Critical Interventions: Journal of African Art History and Visual Culture. \n \n \n\nThis program is organized and presented by the Fowler Museum at UCLA.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Seminar: Lindsay M. LaFave\, Ph.D.\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nA key feature of cancer development is the loss of gene regulatory programs that govern normal cellular identity\; however\, these disrupted regulatory landscapes\, or epigenomic states\, are not well understood. To study epigenomic state changes in the natural evolution of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD)\, I utilized the well-established KrasG12D/+p53-/- (KP) murine model of LUAD progression. Using an optimized single-cell ATAC-sequencing approach with combinatorial indexing\, I profiled the chromatin accessibility states of individual KP tumors\, metastases\, and normal lungs. Strikingly\, we identified expansive epigenomic heterogeneity across cancer progression\; yet\, these cell states followed reproducible trajectories across individual tumors—suggesting conserved paths toward metastasis. We utilized computational tools to identify 11 discernable states across LUAD cancer progression characterized by transcription factor (TF) regulators and downstream regulated genes. These analyses led to the identification of a late-stage program associated with progressive RUNX2 activation and adverse survival in human patients. Together\, these results demonstrated the utility of single-cell epigenomics to identify TF-driven regulatory programs as key biomarkers of cancer progression. My ongoing work leverages evolving epigenomic technologies in murine and organoid systems to understand the overarching mechanisms dictating altered chromatin state in cancer.\n\nSpeaker:\nLindsay M. LaFave is a cancer biologist with a long-standing interest in studying chromatin biology. Lindsay completed her B.S. in biochemistry at the University of Michigan in 2009. She received her Ph.D. in Cancer Biology at Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School in New York City in 2015. Her graduate research in Ross Levine’s lab at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center focused on studying the role of mutated chromatin modifying proteins in hematopoietic malignancies. For her postdoctoral training\, she continued to study epigenetic mechanisms of cancer progression\, shifting her primary focus to solid tumors. Lindsay is a current Damon Runyon postdoctoral fellow in the labs of Tyler Jacks at MIT and Jason Buenrostro at Harvard University. Her work leverages murine modeling and single-cell epigenomic technologies to understand cell state changes that occur during cancer progression in lung adenocarcinoma. During her postdoctoral training\, Lindsay identified a diverse repertoire of gene regulatory changes important in cancer progression that were associated with altered cellular identity and the emergence of pre-metastatic gene programs. Her independent research group will utilize evolving epigenomic technologies and cancer models to dissect chromatin-mediated mechanisms driving lung cancer.

DESCRIPTION:The pandemic halted the in-person artwork selection typical of Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) exhibits. As an adaptation\, PCAP invited artists incarcerated in Michigan state prisons to create small-scale artwork and send their entries by mail. \n\nA link to the exhibit will be posted at https://myumi.ch/kxZ1D on May 19\, 2021.\n\nThe exhibit includes 141 artworks\, featuring a diversity of both artists and artistic choices. All the 2D artworks measure 4 in. x 6 in. and the 3D artworks no more than 4 in. x 6 in. x 4 in. \n\nArtwork sales appointments are available May 20–27\, 2021. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Real-time Human Workload Estimation and Its Application in Adaptive Haptic Shared Control
DESCRIPTION:Automated vehicles (AVs) are promising to have the potential to reduce driving-related injuries and deaths. However\, autonomous driving technology is currently limited in its scope and reliability\, giving rise to the semi-autonomous driving model\, where the autonomy and the human share the control of the vehicle. Workload\, despite being an important human factor\, has not yet been considered when designing adaptive shared control. Recently\, researchers have started to apply machine learning techniques to classify mental workload into different levels. However\, most of these studies have adopted either a single-model-single-feature approach or a single-model-all-features approach. However different machine learning models are suitable for different features\, how to leverage different models for different features is critical.\n\nTo address these shortcomings and research gaps\, the goals of this dissertation were to (1) examine whether and to what extent haptic shared control performance can be improved by incorporating operators' workload\; (2) develop a computational model for workload estimation\, and the model should be able to leverage different machine learning models that work best for different features\; and (3) investigate the generalizability of the workload estimation model. To address these research goals\, this dissertation was composed of four research phases with two pilot studies and four human subject experiments.\n\n(1) Collaborating with Yifan Weng\, Dr. Tulga Ersal\, and Prof. Jeffrey Stein from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan\, we developed a teleoperated dual-task shared control simulation platform where the human shared control of a ground vehicle with autonomy while performing a surveillance task simultaneously. In addition\, we developed a real-time eye-tracking system based on Tobii Pro Glasses 2 to measure the human gaze points in a world frame and pupil sizes. \n\n(2) We proposed a workload-adaptive haptic shared control scheme together with our collaborators. We conducted two human subject experiments during this phase. The results indicated that the proposed workload-adaptive haptic shared control scheme can reduce human workload\, increase human trust in the system\, increase driving performance\, and reduce human effort without sacrificing surveillance task performance.\n\n(3) We proposed a Bayesian inference model for workload estimation that can leverage the different machine learning models that work best for different features. Specifically\, we used support-vector machines (SVMs) for pupil size change\, the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for gaze trajectory\, SVMs for fixation feature\, and Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) for fixation trajectory. The empirical results indicated that our proposed model achieved a 0.82 F1 score for workload imposed by varying surveillance task urgency.\n\n(4) We investigated the generalizability of our proposed Bayesian inference model for workload estimation by conducting two human subject experiments with 24 participants and using different factors to impose human workload\, i.e.\, obstacle headway and driving speed.  The results indicated that our proposed model achieved a 0.70 F1 score for the workload imposed by obstacle avoidance and the personalized version of our proposed model can distinguish the workload imposed by different driving speeds under high surveillance task urgency.

In Massachusetts\, towns along Cape Cod have been exploring the use of non-traditional methods for meeting nitrogen reduction requirements\, such as establishing shellfish aquaculture operations in coastal waters. This webinar will feature a recently completed research project that addressed critical information gaps identified by water quality managers and regulators - specifically the needs to quantify the nitrogen removal rates of commercial shellfish growing practices\, and to identify best practices for siting and maintaining aquaculture operations that maximize benefits for water quality.

DESCRIPTION:The pandemic halted the in-person artwork selection typical of Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) exhibits. As an adaptation\, PCAP invited artists incarcerated in Michigan state prisons to create small-scale artwork and send their entries by mail. \n\nA link to the exhibit will be posted at https://myumi.ch/kxZ1D on May 19\, 2021.\n\nThe exhibit includes 141 artworks\, featuring a diversity of both artists and artistic choices. All the 2D artworks measure 4 in. x 6 in. and the 3D artworks no more than 4 in. x 6 in. x 4 in. \n\nArtwork sales appointments are available May 20–27\, 2021. DESCRIPTION:Register at: https://myumi.ch/pdP3y\n\nPresentations:\n\n*State Expansion in Middle Horizon Peru: Re-Examining Wari Impact on the Local Communities of the Cusco Region*\, by Veronique Belisle\n   \nIn the Andes\, the Middle Horizon (600-1000 CE) has traditionally been interpreted as a period during which a strong Wari imperial state conquered several provinces and tightly controlled local populations. In the Cusco region of southern Peru\, research conducted at large Wari installations has long guided reconstructions of Wari power\, leading scholars to argue that Wari presence resulted in the loss of local autonomy and the reorganization of economic activities. In this talk\, I use regional surveys and excavation data from the local center of Ak’awillay to test this model and evaluate Wari military\, economic\, and religious impact in Cusco. Results do not support the hypothesis of a military conquest of the region and suggest strong continuity in agricultural production\, exchange networks\, and ritual activities. I conclude that Wari impact in Cusco was not as strong as originally proposed and that similar to other early states worldwide\, Wari influence did not penetrate very deeply into local life.\n   \n*Colonial Legends and the Anthropological Reconstruction of Inca Origins*\, by R. Alan Covey\n   \n   Spaniards collected myths of Inca origins as part of political and religious discourse on colonization. Certain versions of the story eventually became part of Peruvian national history\, a legend that John Rowe challenged in the 1940s with his own historical paradigm. Rowe's historicist approach influenced the work of lo andino scholarship in archaeology and ethnohistory as research proliferated from the late 1960s onward. In recent decades\, a new body of archaeological data has demonstrated the need for a new anthropological paradigm for Inca origins. The completion of horizontal excavations and regional surveys\, and the introduction of new analytical techniques (radiocarbon dates\, bioarchaeology\, geochemical analysis) have generated multiple lines of evidence for independently reconstructing important aspects of Inca state formation and early territorial expansion. Recent and emerging research encourages new approaches to the ethnohistoric record and better engagement with data from Inca provincial regions. This talk will review the intellectual history of the discourse on Inca origins\, summarize current evidence\, and identify areas for future interpretation\, including issues that are difficult to resolve with archaeological evidence.

DESCRIPTION:This talk shares the journey of establishing Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISI)\, the federal government’s most recent Minority-Serving Institution designated to serve Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students. Current descriptive and demographic data will be shared\, charting the 14-year growth of AANAPISIs within our postsecondary education system. In doing so\, a more accurate portrait of AAPI students will be presented to emphasize the complexity of their educational experiences.    \nSpeaker: Mike Hoa Nguyen is assistant professor at the University of Denver’s Morgridge College of Education and faculty affiliate at the Scrivner Institute of Public Policy and the Interdisciplinary Research Institute for the Study of (In)Equality (IRISE). His research examines the benefits and consequences of public policy instruments in expanding or constraining the operations of colleges and universities\, with a specific focus on federal diversity initiatives. In addition to his academic work\, Nguyen has extensive professional experience with federal policy\, having served as a senior staff member in the United States Congress. Nguyen currently serves as a Commissioner on the Denver Asian American and Pacific Islander Commission\, a member of the Board of Directors for the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC)\, and continues to volunteer and provide research consulting for education and civil rights organizations. Most recently\, he was a lead author on an amicus curiae brief on behalf of 678 social scientists in SFFA vs. Harvard\; which was cited by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in their opinion.
