This is not only because we lack a robust body of scholarship trained on this lens to assign on syllabi\, but also because we have lacked academic gatherings such as RaceB4Race\, where medievalists working on Europe have begun to think about the possibilities of race as an analytical category in relation to medieval texts. This presentation is therefore a call to getting started\, to think creatively about how we can incorporate existing scholarship on social marginality\, precarity\, and otherness (on outcastes and pollution\, on Hansen’s disease\, on slavery and indentured servitude\, on illness\, on animals) to help students make broader connections.\n   \n   Vyjayanthi Selinger is an Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Bowdoin College. DESCRIPTION:Between historic bipartisan investments to stabilize and expand access to child care in 2020 and new proposals from Congress and the Biden Administration\, the nation is poised to significantly increase access to quality early childhood education (ECE). These investments are acutely needed to ensure that all children—particularly children from families with low incomes—have access to high-quality ECE\; working and middle class families have access to affordable care\; and early educators are supported and adequately compensated.\n\nAs Congress and the Administration consider their next major investments in ECE\, however\, they need a vision for a new and better system. How do we ensure that our many early childhood programs—including child care subsidies\, Head Start\, state preschool\, and special education programs—can be a system of coherent support from birth through early elementary? DESCRIPTION:The best laid plans can go awry with poorly thought through conclusions drawn from otherwise accurate data. Learn to identify misleading results (deliberate or accidental) in research with an exercise from the famous University of Washington course Calling Bullshit.\n\nWe'll look at an example from science media\, from a researcher\, and from an NIH report\, each of which have serious but easy to miss errors but still got published. Just what is wrong with the papers? How did the editors neglect to find the issue with their conclusions? Why did the scientist who wrote up the results not see their own error? (spoiler alert- the answer to all these questions is usually bias or outright discrimination) \n\nWe'll answer these questions in person on North Campus. DESCRIPTION:Mechanoreciprocity in cell migration is an emerging concept describing the dynamic\, bi-directional interactions between migrating cells and the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM) they negotiate. Migrating cells not only sense and adapt to biochemical and biophysical ECM cues\, but also\, exert forces\, deposit matrix\, and secrete chemokines\, matrix metalloproteinases\, and matrix crosslinking enzymes that dynamically alter the same ECM properties known to regulate cell migration. Due to limitations in standard cell migration assays\, how matrix properties influence cell migration and in turn\, how cells influence matrix properties\, has previously been studied as separate processes. However\, observations from development\, wound healing\, and a variety of disease processes highlight the interdependency and iterative relationship between cell migration and ECM. An improved understanding of the underlying mechanisms that orchestrate the coevolution of migrating cells and ECM will aid in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine efforts to guide repair fibroblasts to regenerate wound beds\, direct collective endothelial cell migration to vascularize ischemic or engineered tissue grafts and confine otherwise metastatic cancer cells to the primary tumor. Thus\, the focus of this dissertation is to design biomimetic microsystems that afford investigation of cell migration mechanoreciprocity with a focus on fibroblasts\, endothelial cells\, and cancer cells.\n\n \n\nFirst\, this thesis investigated how single mesenchymal cells (fibroblasts and cancer cells) migrate in fibrous stromal tissue settings\, such as in trans-stromal cancer cell migration during metastasis. To model fibrous stromal tissue\, 3D fiber networks were electrospun over microfabricated wells to define ECM mechanics. Independently tuning alignment and stiffness of these matrices resulted in two phenotypically distinct cell migration modes. In contrast to stiff matrices where cells migrated continuously in a traditional mesenchymal fashion\, cells in deformable matrices stretched matrix fibers to store elastic energy\; subsequent adhesion failure triggered sudden matrix recoil and rapid cell translocation (termed slingshot migration). Across a variety of cell types\, traction force measurements revealed a relationship between cell contractility and the matrix stiffness where slingshot migration mode occurred optimally.\n\n \n\nNext\, this thesis describes how microenvironmental cues influence collective endothelial cell migration during sprouting angiogenesis towards the design of pro-angiogenic biomaterials. This work employed a multiplexed angiogenesis-on-a-chip platform to assess the chemokine-directed 3D invasion of endothelial cells from a lumenized parent vessel into user-defined ECM. By tuning soluble and physical cues of the ECM\, this work identified how 1) functional angiogenesis requires microenvironmental cues that balance cell invasion speed and proliferation\; 2) dynamic interactions between sprout stalk cells and ECM regulates neovessel lumenization\; and 3) imbuing microporosity within synthetic hydrogels can enhance endothelial cell invasion and angiogenic sprout lumenization.\n\n \n\nLastly\, this thesis investigated how fibrous matrix cues activate quiescent vessel-lining endothelial cells into invasive tip cells in the context of fibrosis. Composite hydrogels (electrospun fiber segments suspended within 3D ECM) were integrated with the angiogenesis-on-a-chip platform. These studies establish that heightened matrix fiber density destabilizes cell-cell adherens junctions\, reduces endothelium barrier function\, and promotes the invasion of endothelial tip cells. DESCRIPTION:The Halal Metrop­o­lis exhi­bi­tion\, by artist Osman Khan\, pho­tog­ra­pher Razi Jafri\, and his­to­rian Sally How­ell\, explores the facts\, fic­tions\, and imag­i­nar­ies of the Mus­lim population(s) in Detroit and South­east Michi­gan as viewed through his­tor­i­cal research\, doc­u­men­ta­tion of cur­rent con­di­tions\, and explo­rations of future desires. The Halal Metrop­o­lis alludes to the estab­lished and grow­ing Mus­lim pop­u­la­tion in Detroit and its metro area\, one of the largest and most diverse Mus­lim pop­u­la­tions in the U.S.\, whose vis­i­bil­ity is both pro­nounced and extremely present in the city\, yet whose nar­ra­tive seems unusu­ally silent in the larger Detroit story. DESCRIPTION:News of extensive Russian hacking of a number of U.S. government agencies and major corporations broke recently\, prompting many questions about the strength of our cybersecurity. Why was the Russian hacking not detected by any of the government agencies that have cybersecurity roles? Is our reliance on private companies for our nation’s cybersecurity strategy appropriate\, or does this pose a vulnerability?\n\nOur speaker\, Kristin Judge\, is founder of the nonprofit Cybercrime Support Network.  The Cybercrime Support Network works with federal\, state and local law enforcement and consumer protection agencies to help consumers and small businesses affected by cybercrime. \n\nMs. Judge’s extensive background includes her role as Director of Government Affairs at the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) where she worked with Google\, FTC\, FBI\, SBA\, DHS\, NIST\, congressional leaders and other key stakeholders across the country to educate consumers and businesses on how to protect sensitive data.\n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be live streamed\n\nIn many parts of the world\, countries emerging from conflict suffer from grave deficits in the rule of law. Weak courts\, police\, and anti-corruption mechanisms allow insecurity\, graft and impunity to fester.  In some extraordinary cases the United Nations and other international actors have partnered with national governments\, sharing sovereign authority over key functions\, to bolster the rule of law. This talk will discuss the power and pitfalls of sharing sovereignty\, drawing examples in West Africa\, the Middle East\, Southeast Asia\, and Central America.\n\nOur presenter\, John D. Ciorciari is an Associate professor of Public Policy and Director of the Ford School’s Weiser Diplomacy Center and International Policy Center at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy\, University of Michigan.  His research focuses on international law and politics in the Global South. He is the author or editor of several books on international politics and law\, including a new book entitled “Sovereignty Sharing in Fragile States”.  He received his AB and JD from Harvard University\, his DPhil and Fulbright Scholarship from the University of Oxford.\n\nThis is the last of ten lectures to be presented once each month from September 2020 through June 2021. The Halal Metrop­o­lis alludes to the estab­lished and grow­ing Mus­lim pop­u­la­tion in Detroit and its metro area\, one of the largest and most diverse Mus­lim pop­u­la­tions in the U.S.\, whose vis­i­bil­ity is both pro­nounced and extremely present in the city\, yet whose nar­ra­tive seems unusu­ally silent in the larger Detroit story. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Safety Assessment of Autonomous Vehicles with a Naturalistic and Adversarial Driving Environment
DESCRIPTION:Safety performance testing is critical to the development and deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs). The prevailing approach life-like simulations of our driving environment. However\, due to its high dimensionality and the rareness of safety-critical events\, hundreds of millions of miles would be required to demonstrate an AV's safety performance. \n\nThe research in this presentation proposes a naturalistic and adversarial driving environment that can significantly reduce the required number of miles driven while simultaneously maintaining unbiasedness. Drs. Henry Liu and Shuo Feng will demonstrate the effectiveness of this in a highway-driving simulation.\n\nLearn more about the proposed research: https://myumi.ch/BoQ2Q\n\n---\nAbout the speakers:\nDr. Henry Liu is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan\, a Research Professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI)\, and the Director for the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT). Professor Liu conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface of transportation engineering\, automotive engineering\, and artificial intelligence. Specifically\, his scholarly interests concern traffic flow monitoring\, modeling\, and control\, as well as testing and evaluation of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). He has published more than 120 refereed journal papers on these topics and his work has been widely recognized in the public media for promoting smart transportation innovations. He has appeared on media outlets including CNBC\, Forbes\, Technode\, and more. In 2019\, Professor Liu was invited to testify on the nation's transportation research agenda in front of the US House Subcommittee on Research and Technology. Professor Liu has nurtured a new generation of scholars\, and some of his Ph.D. students and postdocs have joined first-class universities such as Columbia\, Purdue\, and RPI. Professor Liu is also the managing editor of the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems.\n\nDr. Shuo Feng is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. He received his bachelor’s and Ph.D. degrees in the Department of Automation at Tsinghua University\, China\, in 2014 and 2019\, respectively. He was also a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan from 2017 to 2019.  His research interests lie in the testing and evaluation of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs)\, cooperative automation\, and traffic environment modeling. Dr. Feng has published around 20 articles in refereed journals including Nature Communications\, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems\, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology\, and Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies. He has served as a member in the SAE ORAD V&V committee and workshop organizer of the IEEE 2021 Intelligent Vehicles Symposium. He received the “Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award” from the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (ITSS) in 2020.
