The theme for our event is “Improving Intercultural Race Relations to Develop Intercultural Solidarity.” \n\nJuneteenth\, also called Jubilee Day\, Freedom Day\, Liberation Day\, or Emancipation Day\, is the designated holiday commemorating the freedom of the slaves in the United States\, traditionally observed annually on June 19th. President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had officially outlawed slavery in Texas and the other states in rebellion against the Union almost two and a half years earlier on January 1\, 1863. Enforcement of the Proclamation generally relied on the advancement of the Union troops. The anniversary of the June 19\, 1865 date recognizes the day that the announcement by Union Army Major General Gordon Granger\, proclaiming freedom from slavery and the end of the Civil War was delivered to Galveston\, Texas. \n\nThe Juneteenth holiday is celebrated on Saturday\, June 19\, 2021\, but we invite you to join us for our celebration on Friday\, June 18th\, from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm.\n\nShare your photos from past Juneteenth celebrations and events organized by your community and/or family!! If you have a picture to share\, you may upload your photo by midnight on June 4th into this Google form: https://forms.gle/bMZ46tGH1YedgE1a7. DESCRIPTION:In her new book “Beyond the Boundaries of Childhood: African American Children in the Antebellum North\,” Dr. Crystal Webster argues that young African Americans were frequently left outside the 19th century's emerging constructions of both race and childhood. They were marginalized in the development of schooling\, ignored in debates over child labor\, and presumed to lack the inherent innocence ascribed to white children. Drawing evidence from the urban centers of Boston\, New York\, and Philadelphia\, Webster's innovative research yields a powerful new history of African American childhood before the Civil War\, showing that Black children nevertheless carved out physical and social space for play\, for learning\, and for their own aspirations. \n\nDr. Webster joins us in conversation with Clements Library Director Paul Erickson. DESCRIPTION:The Halal Metrop­o­lis exhi­bi­tion\, by artist Osman Khan\, pho­tog­ra­pher Razi Jafri\, and his­to­rian Sally How­ell\, explores the facts\, fic­tions\, and imag­i­nar­ies of the Mus­lim population(s) in Detroit and South­east Michi­gan as viewed through his­tor­i­cal research\, doc­u­men­ta­tion of cur­rent con­di­tions\, and explo­rations of future desires. The Halal Metrop­o­lis alludes to the estab­lished and grow­ing Mus­lim pop­u­la­tion in Detroit and its metro area\, one of the largest and most diverse Mus­lim pop­u­la­tions in the U.S.\, whose vis­i­bil­ity is both pro­nounced and extremely present in the city\, yet whose nar­ra­tive seems unusu­ally silent in the larger Detroit story. DESCRIPTION:Panelists will seek to generate a discussion about how historical knowledge might contribute solutions to the problems of contemporary expressions of human slavery and offer new pathways to democracy and freedom.\n\nAmong American historians\, it is generally agreed that the historical study of chattel slavery covered about 250 years: from 1619 to 1865 in the United States and to 1888 in Brazil and the Americas. Yet slavery has not disappeared. Globally\, an estimated 27–40 million persons are victims of involuntary servitude. What if these contemporary forms of human labor exploitation constitute a “Third Slavery”? \n\nIntroductions will be given by Dr. Earl Lewis\, director of the Center for Social Solutions and the Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies\, History\, and Public Policy. \n\nThe roundtable discussion will be chaired by Dr. Daina Ramey Berry\, the Oliver H. Radkey Regents Professor of History at the University of Texas at Austin. Panelists include: \n\nDavid W. Blight\, the Sterling Professor of History and director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery\, Resistance\, and Abolition at Yale University\; \n\nAmbassador (ret.) On June 19\, 1865\, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation\, news reached Texas and parts of the southwest that freedom had come. One hundred fifty-six\nyears later\, freedom and equality are still being sought. Juneteenth is a day of celebration and recognition\, but also a reminder that there is much work to be done.\n10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. March (RAIN OR SHINE)\nParticipate in an in-person one mile community march from Fuller Park to Wheeler Park (map). The Halal Metrop­o­lis alludes to the estab­lished and grow­ing Mus­lim pop­u­la­tion in Detroit and its metro area\, one of the largest and most diverse Mus­lim pop­u­la­tions in the U.S.\, whose vis­i­bil­ity is both pro­nounced and extremely present in the city\, yet whose nar­ra­tive seems unusu­ally silent in the larger Detroit story. Benford Award for Entrepreneurial Leadership. His carillon arrangement of the Yiddish song \"Zog Nit Keyn Mol\" was published in the book \"Global Rings\" (CHI Press\, 2020).\n\nXiaoying Pu is a Ph.D. Candidate in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan\, with a research interest in visually communicating uncertainty and data analyses. She has been taking carillon since Fall 2018\, under Drs. Tiffany Ng and Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra. SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Optimal Task-Invariant Energetic Control for Powered Exoskeletons
DESCRIPTION:Powered exoskeletons have been developed to serve as rehabilitation devices and provide gait assistance to human users. It enhances a healthy person's abilities and supports a physically challenged person's daily life by providing powered hip\, knee\, and/or ankle motions with different control designs. State-of-art powered exoskeletons use trajectory-based\, kinematic control methods for specific tasks. This type of control is appropriate for paraplegia\, where the exoskeleton provides complete assistance. However\, it overly constrains the volitional motion of people with remnant voluntary ability\, e.g.\, stroke patients. In contrast\, trajectory-free control methods are now being developed to provide task-invariant partial assistance for practicing/relearning leg motions or performing a continuum of activities in varying environments. Robotics systems like powered exoskeletons can be represented in the format of the Euler-Lagrange equation or the equivalent class\, the port-controlled Hamiltonian equations. We use energy shaping methods for task-invariance by altering the human-exoskeleton system's dynamic characteristics via the Euler-Lagrange equations or the more general port-controlled Hamiltonian equations. Under satisfaction of the matching conditions\, which is a set of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs)\, the open-loop system's mass/inertia matrix and gravitational vector can be mapped to the desired closed-loop system dynamics. \n\nEnergy shaping has broad applicability but has been limited in part by its computational and analytical complexity. Changes to the system dynamics must follow the solution to the matching conditions\, while finding a solution to the matching conditions itself is challenging. The corresponding controller for kinetic energy shaping requires complicated calculations of the mass/inertia matrix inverse\, where the computational cost for implementation increases tremendously. Potential energy shaping avoids the matrix inversion by altering only the potential energy but prevents shaping on the inertia terms. Such challenges require a new total energy shaping (TES) framework that provides flexible shaping structures with more freedom to change closed-loop dynamics over the potential energy shaping method. The corresponding control law with shaped structure also requires efforts to optimally achieve the powered exoskeletons' target control strategy for different locomotor tasks. Therefore\, the specific aims of this project are: 1) construct a TES framework for powered exoskeletons with flexible shaping structure\, 2) apply the framework to powered exoskeletons for optimal assistance across varying locomotor tasks\, and 3) perform experiments on multiple human subjects to demonstrate the possible clinical benefits of optimal TES framework with powered lower-limb exoskeletons.\n\nThis work is significant to the viability and performance of energy shaping methods to nonlinear systems by simplifying the matching conditions and providing flexibility in inertia forces/torques compensation. In powered exoskeletons\, inertia compensation does not require modifying the mass/inertia matrix with high dimensions\, and the corresponding controllers are efficient for experimental implementation. The powered exoskeletons' target control strategy uses normative torque patterns to provide assistance or augment performance. We formulate an optimization problem to design the controller and produce joint torques that fit normative biological joint torques and offload musculature for walking on multiple tasks\, including stairs. We perform experiments with multiple able-bodied human subjects wearing a knee-ankle exoskeleton to demonstrate reduced activation in certain lower-limb muscles on multiple tasks.

DESCRIPTION:The stomach and brain interact closely with each other. Their interactions are central to digestive functions and the “gut feeling”. The neural pathways that mediate the stomach-brain interactions include the vagus nerve and the thoracic nerve. Through these nerves\, the stomach can relay neural signals to a number of brain regions that span a central gastric network. This gastric network allows the brain to monitor and regulate gastric physiology and allows the stomach to influence emotion and cognition. Impairment of this gastric network may lead to both gastric and neurological disorders\, e.g.\, anxiety\, gastroparesis\, functional dyspepsia\, and obesity. However\, the structural constituents and functional roles of the central gastric network remain unclear. In my dissertation research\, I leveraged complementary techniques to characterize the central gastric network in rats across a wide range of scales and different gastric states. In animal experiments\, I used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to map brain activity synchronized with gastric electrical activity and to map brain activations induced by electrical stimulation applied to the cervical vagus or its afferent terminals on the stomach. I also used neurophysiology to characterize gastric neurons in brainstem in response to gastric electrical stimulation. Results from my studies suggest that 1) gastric neurons in the brainstem are selective to the orientation of muscle activity relayed through intramuscular arrays\, 2) the central gastric network is intrinsically coupled to gastric slow waves and their amplitude fluctuations primarily via vagal signaling\, 3) selective stimulation of the vagus can evoke widespread and fast brain responses and alter functional connectivity within and beyond the central gastric network. DESCRIPTION:This talk will provide an overview of the Fisk-Vanderbilt Master’s to Ph.D. Bridge Program (FVBP) Model for inclusive graduate education. Further\, Dina Myers Stroud will present findings from a study conducted as part of the Fisk-Vanderbilt LSAMP Regional Center of Excellence in Broadening Participation to understand what FVBP activities students report as contributing to their success. This session will be of particular interest to those looking to build on their mentoring practices and develop activities to foster a sense of community.\nSpeaker\nDina Myers Stroud serves as faculty at both Fisk and Vanderbilt University. As the executive director of the Fisk-Vanderbilt Master’s to Ph.D. Bridge Program (FVBP) since 2012\, Stroud strives to advocate for and mentor students from underrepresented and underserved groups into and through STEM Ph.D. programs. In 2018\, Stroud began serving as the director of the LSAMP Regional Center of Excellence in Broadening Participation. There she directs educational research centered on the FVBP\, in collaboration with the Peabody School of Education at Vanderbilt and the American Institutes for Research. Trained as a development biologist\, Stroud did postdoctoral work in cardiovascular research at UCLA\, NYU and the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Key Organizations Serving Food Insecure People in Washtenaw County
DESCRIPTION:Washtenaw County is wealthy:  Median household income is $76\,500\, 28% above the Michigan average and 17% above the U.S. average.   However\, there are significant pockets of poverty in the county:  About 11% of the population is below the poverty line.  Similarly\, 11% is food insecure\, a percentage close to the national average.  The Coronavirus pandemic has greatly worsened the problem.  Since March 2020\, county food distribution agencies reported 30-300% increases in visitors.  To quote one agency head\, “[T]he pandemic created a perfect storm of food insecurity...  We have never seen anything like it\; there was a drastic increase in people needing help.”\n\nThis panel discussion will feature leaders of three front-line organizations doing battle against food insecurity:  Food Gatherers represented by Eileen Spring\, serving all of Washtenaw County\; Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels represented by Alison Foreman\; and We The People Opportunity Farm in Ypsilanti\, represented by Melvin Parson.  Each leader will describe their organization\, its target audience\, operations\, etc.  The moderator will then present topics and questions for further discussion\n                                                                                                           \nEileen Spring\, recently named 2021 Woman of the Year by the United Way of Washtenaw County\, has spent 27 years at Food Gatherers and is currently President and CEO.  Ms. Spring helped develop and steward a community-wide Food Security Plan that has dramatically improved the amount of fresh produce and protein available to individuals struggling with food insecurity in Washtenaw County.  She has been active on the board of the Food Bank Council of Michigan\, has participated at the national level with Feeding America\, and is a founding member of the Washtenaw Housing Alliance.  She received her bachelor's degree from Hofstra University and a master's degree from the University of Michigan.	\n\nFood Gatherers was the first food rescue program in Michigan\, and the sixth nationwide.  The food bank serves all of Washtenaw County and provides millions of pounds of free or low-cost food to a network of 170 hunger relief pantries.  Food Gatherers also provides direct food assistance in the form of hot meals\, nutritious snacks\, or emergency groceries to low-income adults\, seniors and children.  It operates the Community Kitchen/Job Training Program at the Delonis Center\, as well as Summer Food Service and Healthy School Pantry programs.   \n\nAlison Foreman\, Executive Director of Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels (YMOW)\, has worked with Ypsilanti area non-profit organizations for more than 15 years.  Ms. Foreman serves on the boards of the Ypsilanti Area Community Fund\, Washtenaw Leaders Advisory and the Area Agency on Aging 1B Diabetes Program Advisory Group\, and is a former member of the SOS community services board.  She has appeared as a guest on NPR's “All Things Considered” and CNN's “The Lead.”  Prior to YMOW Alison worked with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Book Industry Charitable Foundation.  She received her bachelor’s degree in juvenile justice and a master’s degree in public administration from Eastern Michigan University.\n\nYMOW provides nutritious meals\, social contact and other services to homebound elderly\, ill and disabled persons in eastern Washtenaw County\, to enable them to enjoy healthier\, safer\, and more independent lives.  YMOW’s vision is a community where every senior feels nourished\, valued and supported.\n\nMelvin Parson (AKA Farmer Parson) spent approximately 13 years of his life incarcerated\, was homeless on three separate occasions\, and battled with substance abuse for many years. He has experienced many of the challenges that come with being on parole or probation.  In 2015\, while he was earning a BSW from Eastern Michigan University\, he co-founded a mentor program for men and women returning home from incarceration called A Brighter Way.  In 2018 Mr. Parson founded a nonprofit organization\, We The People Opportunity Farm (WTPOF)\, to create a sustainable farming system that can support a workforce of formerly incarcerated persons. He believes a main factor for people returning to prison is their inability to find meaningful employment or enrichment opportunities.  One of his goals is to provide a paid internship program that will act as a springboard to future employment\, continued education\, and meaningful strides towards caring about themselves\, others and their community.   \n\nWTPOF’s mission is to break the cycle of incarceration in Washtenaw County. Its Paid Internship Program includes farming activities\, as well as literacy and learning related to organic foods\, career-building workshops\, financial literacy\, and home rehabilitation.   In addition\, it offers employment and/or educational opportunities and ongoing support. DESCRIPTION:Mechanical testing of viscoelastic biomaterials is of critical importance in biomedical engineering\, enabling basic research into the role of the extracellular matrix\, investigatory and diagnostic testing of tissues and biofluids\, and the development and characterization of tissue engineered therapeutics. Conventional material testing approaches used for soft biomaterials generally require force application through direct contact with a sample\, leading to potential contamination and damage\, and thereby limiting these approaches to end-point measurements. To overcome these limitations\, we have developed a new measurement technique\, Resonant Acoustic Rheometry (RAR)\, which enables high-throughput\, quantitative\, and non-contact viscoelastic characterization of biomaterials\, soft tissues\, and biological fluids.\n\n \n\nRAR uses ultrasonic pulses to both generate microscale perturbations and measure the resulting resonant oscillations at the surface of soft materials using standard labware. Resonant oscillatory properties obtained from the frequency spectra of the surface oscillations\, including the resonant frequency and the damping coefficient\, are used to quantify material properties such as shear modulus\, shear viscosity\, and surface tension in both viscoelastic solids and liquids.\n\n \n\nWe developed a prototype RAR system and tested it on a range of soft biomaterials\, with shear moduli ranging from under 100 Pa to over 50 kPa\, including fibrin\, gelatin\, and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Shear moduli measured using RAR were validated both computationally using finite element analysis and experimentally using conventional shear rheometry\, with excellent linear correlation in measured elasticity between techniques (R2 > 0.95). By performing parallel RAR experiments using microwells of different sizes\, we verified that resonant oscillatory behaviors could be used to quantify the intrinsic viscoelastic properties of a material. We also demonstrated the rapid\, non-contact monitoring of changes in material properties over a variety of temporal scales\, ranging from processes occurring on the order of milliseconds to those occurring over hours and days. High temporal resolution RAR measurements\, with sampling intervals as low as 0.2 seconds\, were used to characterize the gelation process. Characteristic features of the resonant surface waves during phase transition were applied to identify the gel point for various hydrogels. High sample throughput was demonstrated by performing longitudinal RAR testing to explore the impact of hydrogel polymer and crosslinker concentration on both reaction kinetics and final mechanical properties in full factorial experiments consisting of over 15\,000 unique measurements. We were able to identify individual effects of design parameters as well as interactions that led to unexpected mechanical properties\, demonstrating the importance of combinatorial methods and high-throughput mechanical characterization in material design.\n\n \n\nThese studies demonstrate that RAR can rapidly and accurately assess the mechanical properties of soft viscoelastic biomaterials. The measurements generated are analogous to those produced using conventional mechanical testing\, and RAR is further capable of longitudinal viscoelastic studies over time. RAR applies automation in both data collection and analysis\, allowing high throughput measurement of an array of samples without contact or the need for manual intervention. Furthermore\, RAR uses standard microwell plates\, which simplifies sample preparation and handling. The viscoelastic properties of soft biomaterials are relevant in a wide range of applications\, including for clinical diagnostic assays and the development of hydrogel materials for regenerative medicine. Anis Rah­man\, Jumanah Saadeh\, and Zeina Reda will sit down for a con­ver­sa­tion\, mod­er­ated by Halal Metrop­o­lis Project Man­ager Asma Baban\, on the power of stu­dent activism within the uni­ver­sity sys­tem\, the role of stu­dent lead­ers\, and the spe­cific cam­paigns that ani­mate their col­lab­o­ra­tions on campus.\n\nThe Halal Metrop­o­lis exhi­bi­tion\, by artist Osman Khan\, pho­tog­ra­pher Razi Jafri\, and his­to­rian Sally How­ell\, explores the facts\, fic­tions\, and imag­i­nar­ies of the Mus­lim population(s) in Detroit and South­east Michi­gan as viewed through his­tor­i­cal research\, doc­u­men­ta­tion of cur­rent con­di­tions\, and explo­rations of future desires. The Halal Metrop­o­lis is one where Mus­lims prac­tice their faith freely and con­tribute to soci­ety with all of their tal­ents and com­mit­ments. It is cre­ated dia­log­i­cally and requires Mus­lims to be vis­i­ble to one another and to non-Mus­lims. It encour­ages Mus­lims to orga­nize and speak as believ­ers\, cit­i­zens\, and artists.\n\nStamps events are free and open to the pub­lic\, and we are com­mit­ted to mak­ing them acces­si­ble to all atten­dees.
