SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Key Organizations Serving Food Insecure People in Washtenaw County
DESCRIPTION:Washtenaw County is wealthy: Median household income is $76\,500\, 28% above the Michigan average and 17% above the U.S. average. However\, there are significant pockets of poverty in the county: About 11% of the population is below the poverty line. Similarly\, 11% is food insecure\, a percentage close to the national average. The Coronavirus pandemic has greatly worsened the problem. Since March 2020\, county food distribution agencies reported 30-300% increases in visitors. To quote one agency head\, “[T]he pandemic created a perfect storm of food insecurity... We have never seen anything like it\; there was a drastic increase in people needing help.”\n\nThis panel discussion will feature leaders of three front-line organizations doing battle against food insecurity: Food Gatherers represented by Eileen Spring\, serving all of Washtenaw County\; Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels represented by Alison Foreman\; and We The People Opportunity Farm in Ypsilanti\, represented by Melvin Parson. Each leader will describe their organization\, its target audience\, operations\, etc. The moderator will then present topics and questions for further discussion\n \nEileen Spring\, recently named 2021 Woman of the Year by the United Way of Washtenaw County\, has spent 27 years at Food Gatherers and is currently President and CEO. Ms. Spring helped develop and steward a community-wide Food Security Plan that has dramatically improved the amount of fresh produce and protein available to individuals struggling with food insecurity in Washtenaw County. She has been active on the board of the Food Bank Council of Michigan\, has participated at the national level with Feeding America\, and is a founding member of the Washtenaw Housing Alliance. She received her bachelor's degree from Hofstra University and a master's degree from the University of Michigan.	\n\nFood Gatherers was the first food rescue program in Michigan\, and the sixth nationwide. The food bank serves all of Washtenaw County and provides millions of pounds of free or low-cost food to a network of 170 hunger relief pantries. Food Gatherers also provides direct food assistance in the form of hot meals\, nutritious snacks\, or emergency groceries to low-income adults\, seniors and children. It operates the Community Kitchen/Job Training Program at the Delonis Center\, as well as Summer Food Service and Healthy School Pantry programs. \n\nAlison Foreman\, Executive Director of Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels (YMOW)\, has worked with Ypsilanti area non-profit organizations for more than 15 years. Ms. Foreman serves on the boards of the Ypsilanti Area Community Fund\, Washtenaw Leaders Advisory and the Area Agency on Aging 1B Diabetes Program Advisory Group\, and is a former member of the SOS community services board. She has appeared as a guest on NPR's “All Things Considered” and CNN's “The Lead.” Prior to YMOW Alison worked with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Book Industry Charitable Foundation. She received her bachelor’s degree in juvenile justice and a master’s degree in public administration from Eastern Michigan University.\n\nYMOW provides nutritious meals\, social contact and other services to homebound elderly\, ill and disabled persons in eastern Washtenaw County\, to enable them to enjoy healthier\, safer\, and more independent lives. YMOW’s vision is a community where every senior feels nourished\, valued and supported.\n\nMelvin Parson (AKA Farmer Parson) spent approximately 13 years of his life incarcerated\, was homeless on three separate occasions\, and battled with substance abuse for many years. He has experienced many of the challenges that come with being on parole or probation. In 2015\, while he was earning a BSW from Eastern Michigan University\, he co-founded a mentor program for men and women returning home from incarceration called A Brighter Way. In 2018 Mr. Parson founded a nonprofit organization\, We The People Opportunity Farm (WTPOF)\, to create a sustainable farming system that can support a workforce of formerly incarcerated persons. He believes a main factor for people returning to prison is their inability to find meaningful employment or enrichment opportunities. One of his goals is to provide a paid internship program that will act as a springboard to future employment\, continued education\, and meaningful strides towards caring about themselves\, others and their community. \n\nWTPOF’s mission is to break the cycle of incarceration in Washtenaw County. Its Paid Internship Program includes farming activities\, as well as literacy and learning related to organic foods\, career-building workshops\, financial literacy\, and home rehabilitation. In addition\, it offers employment and/or educational opportunities and ongoing support. In 2020\, WTPOF started a Food Distribution Program\, and has given over 1\,200 lbs. of food to 300 neighbors. \n\nPreregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone (734-998-9351). A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed to you a few days prior to the lecture.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Mentoring Across Differences
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will address challenges that emerge in mentoring relationships related to the players’ social identities and their intersection. Through a variety of interactive activities and case studies\, participants will be able to explore from a distance the way bias plays out in mentoring relationships\, dive into closer practice to recognize their own bias from a mentor’s perspective\, and develop strategies to interrupt various biases to ensure particular kinds of collaborations with members of their (future) teams. Participants will also be able to tap into personal knowledge and experiences as mentors or mentees and create the vision and practice of mentorship they would like to pursue in their particular fields and careers. The session’s main objective is to recognize the power of intentional mentorship within the inclusive leadership framework by enhancing participants’ skills and professional toolkits and their understanding of differences\, thus\, ultimately\, achieving a higher level of comfort with both vulnerability and life-long growth when advocating for diversity\, equity\, and inclusion.\nSpeaker: Luciana Nemtanu (she/her/hers)\, Associate Director\, Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/r8EE2.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhD Defense: Eric Charles Hobson
DESCRIPTION:Mechanical testing of viscoelastic biomaterials is of critical importance in biomedical engineering\, enabling basic research into the role of the extracellular matrix\, investigatory and diagnostic testing of tissues and biofluids\, and the development and characterization of tissue engineered therapeutics. Conventional material testing approaches used for soft biomaterials generally require force application through direct contact with a sample\, leading to potential contamination and damage\, and thereby limiting these approaches to end-point measurements. To overcome these limitations\, we have developed a new measurement technique\, Resonant Acoustic Rheometry (RAR)\, which enables high-throughput\, quantitative\, and non-contact viscoelastic characterization of biomaterials\, soft tissues\, and biological fluids.\n\n \n\nRAR uses ultrasonic pulses to both generate microscale perturbations and measure the resulting resonant oscillations at the surface of soft materials using standard labware. Resonant oscillatory properties obtained from the frequency spectra of the surface oscillations\, including the resonant frequency and the damping coefficient\, are used to quantify material properties such as shear modulus\, shear viscosity\, and surface tension in both viscoelastic solids and liquids.\n\n \n\nWe developed a prototype RAR system and tested it on a range of soft biomaterials\, with shear moduli ranging from under 100 Pa to over 50 kPa\, including fibrin\, gelatin\, and polyethylene glycol (PEG). Shear moduli measured using RAR were validated both computationally using finite element analysis and experimentally using conventional shear rheometry\, with excellent linear correlation in measured elasticity between techniques (R2 > 0.95). By performing parallel RAR experiments using microwells of different sizes\, we verified that resonant oscillatory behaviors could be used to quantify the intrinsic viscoelastic properties of a material. We also demonstrated the rapid\, non-contact monitoring of changes in material properties over a variety of temporal scales\, ranging from processes occurring on the order of milliseconds to those occurring over hours and days. High temporal resolution RAR measurements\, with sampling intervals as low as 0.2 seconds\, were used to characterize the gelation process. Characteristic features of the resonant surface waves during phase transition were applied to identify the gel point for various hydrogels. High sample throughput was demonstrated by performing longitudinal RAR testing to explore the impact of hydrogel polymer and crosslinker concentration on both reaction kinetics and final mechanical properties in full factorial experiments consisting of over 15\,000 unique measurements. We were able to identify individual effects of design parameters as well as interactions that led to unexpected mechanical properties\, demonstrating the importance of combinatorial methods and high-throughput mechanical characterization in material design.\n\n \n\nThese studies demonstrate that RAR can rapidly and accurately assess the mechanical properties of soft viscoelastic biomaterials. The measurements generated are analogous to those produced using conventional mechanical testing\, and RAR is further capable of longitudinal viscoelastic studies over time. RAR applies automation in both data collection and analysis\, allowing high throughput measurement of an array of samples without contact or the need for manual intervention. Furthermore\, RAR uses standard microwell plates\, which simplifies sample preparation and handling. The viscoelastic properties of soft biomaterials are relevant in a wide range of applications\, including for clinical diagnostic assays and the development of hydrogel materials for regenerative medicine. RAR represents a fast\, accurate\, and cost-effective method for materials characterization in these applications.\n\n \n\nJune 24 - 10:30 AM\n\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJcsd-iurTosGdNn_gR-FbOCe5TUR09Y58WV\n\nCo-Chairs: Dr. Cheri Deng and Dr. Jan Stegmann

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Black & Free: Exploring Liberation and Freedom in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Although freedom and liberation are often considered to be synonymous\, this Juneteenth\, we take another approach. A quick glance across the thoughts and actions of Black Americans demonstrates the notions and realities of freedom and liberation may be different experiences. For some\, freedom is the capacity to think for yourself\, to determine the direction of your future without outside assistance or influence. Yet\, for others\, liberation is the ability to move freely throughout the society – it assumes the absence of bondage and oppression\, an unshackling\, an unfettering\, an unchaining. Throughout history\, people of African descent have fought to not only be free\, but to thrive in liberation. The Diaspora’s diversity\, then\, brings to the table numerous perspectives and ways of imagining and working towards a free and liberated world for Black people. SUMMARY:Presentation:BME Master's Defense: Spencer Morris
DESCRIPTION:Acquiring accurate measurements for blood flow is a clinically relevant problem of interest. Three-dimensional color flow with partial volume correction (PVC) is a relatively new method for measuring blood flow that accounts for beams located partially outside of the blood vessel. Recent work has shown that the relationship between color flow power and partially perfused voxels is nonlinear. This work investigates the statistics of color power measurements in simulated plug flow to help explain this nonlinear behavior. Data was acquired using Field II simulations in which a 3.75 MHz mechanically swept linear array obtained RF data of blood moving through a vessel. Blood in the vessel exhibited plug flow\, and tissue backscatter was set to 40 dB below blood. The statistics of color power at each point in the processing chain were analyzed using histograms\, established results in ultrasound statistics\, and derived probability density functions (pdfs). For locations completely inside the beam\, power before additional processing showed exponential behavior\, whereas the square root of power\, i.e.\, amplitude\, was Rician distributed. After implementing the Kasai algorithm\, the power values could be estimated with a gamma distribution with a shape parameter of 2.21. Kasai powers corresponding to tissue could also be fitted with a gamma distribution\, albeit with a shape parameter close to 1\, indicating close to exponential behavior. Kasai powers for partial volume data were intermediate between the tissue and blood data. A method for estimating partial volume weight from the skewness and kurtosis of samples taken from the same location is also discussed.\n\nDate: Monday\, June 28\, 2021\nTime: 10:00 AM\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/97162930417\nChair: Dr. Oliver Kripfgans

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:\"Daisy Chain\" Video Zine Premiere
DESCRIPTION:View the trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hegNRPuO9KQ.\n\nFrom the creators of House Calls\, *Daisy Chain* is a series of short vignettes documenting the candid and illuminating perspectives of 9 national and regional artists during this time of re-emergence. The name refers to the traditional string of daisies threaded together by their stems\, as well as the contemporary wiring scheme by the same name used in electronics and engineering. \n \nFor this *Daisy Chain*\, nine regional and national artists with diverse experiences\, perspectives\, and practices were each interviewed by Institute for the Humanities Curator Amanda Krugliak. Each of them was asked the same series of questions: How do you feel you are emerging from the past year? What kind of world are you trying to build for the future? How are you thinking about responsiveness and responsibility? Are there any creative strategies you have identified moving forward?\n\nTheir answers—along with images of their work—have been “strung together” visually in video format\, one artist connecting to another in sequence.\n \nIn this time of re-entry\, when we are cautiously emerging from a year in isolation\, and also merging back into action at breakneck speed\, *Daisy Chain *offers the opportunity for contemplation in its assemblage of artists\, art\, and ideas. It explores the ties that bind us\, the past and the future\, and the loose ends. Perhaps as important\, it alludes to surprising and new combinations\, and a renewed capacity to find joy.\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n\nRuth Leonela Buentello\nRuth Leonela Buentello is a visual artist and arts educator from San Antonio\, TX. Her artistic practice is rooted in painting and often bridges other media\, including community-arts and collaborative installations. Her work centers on representations from her Xicanx identity\, class\, gender and family relationships. Buentello received her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is working on her masters from Maine College of Arts. She is also a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors grant. \n\nAbigail DeVille\nAbigail DeVille is best known for her large scale installations. Often incorporating found materials from the neighborhoods around the exhibition venues\, DeVille's sculptures and installations often explore the history of racist violence\, gentrification and lost regional history. Her work also incorporates performance elements that brings the artwork out of its exhibition space and into the streets\; DeVille has organized these public events\, which she calls \"processionals\,\" in several US cities\, including Washington\, D.C.\, Baltimore and New York City. DeVille earned a BFA at the Fashion Institute of Technology and an MFA at Yale. She also attended the Pratt Institute and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.\n\nHubert Massey\nHubert Massey is a Michigan artist whose distinctive fresco murals grace the halls of such visible Michigan destinations as the Detroit TCF Center\, Flint Institute of the Arts\, Detroit Athletic Club\, and his alma mater\, Grand Valley State University\, where he earned an honorary doctorate of fine arts in 2012. Hubert studied at the University of London’s Slade Institute of Fine Arts and later learned the centuries-old fresco technique from former assistants of legendary artist Diego Rivera. He is one of only a few African American artists painting in the true buon fresco style.\n\nShanna Merola\nShanna Merola is a visual artist\, photojournalist\, and legal worker. In addition to her studio practice\, she has been a human rights observer during political uprisings across the country—from the struggle for water rights in Detroit and Flint\, MI to the frontlines of Ferguson\, MO and Standing Rock\, ND. Her collages and constructed landscapes are informed by these events. Merola lives in Detroit\, where she facilitates Know-Your-Rights workshops and coordinates legal support for grassroots organizations through the National Lawyers Guild. Merola holds an MFA in photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University.\n\nScott Northrup\nScott Northrup is a multimedia artist\, writer\, curator\, and educator who has exhibited with museums\, galleries\, film and design festivals\, and alternative spaces in North America and Europe. Northrup is an associate professor and chair of the film and photography programs at College for Creative Studies\, and is on the advisory board for the AAFF and the curatorial team for the next installment of Dlectricity. He earned an MA in media studies from The New School\, and a BFA from Center for Creative Studies.\n\nDavid Opdyke\nDavid Opdyke is a draughtsman\, sculptor\, and animator known for his trenchant political send-ups of American culture. Born in Schenectady\, NY in 1969\, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in painting and sculpture. His work is informed by the massive industrial and corporate restructuring he witnessed growing up\, namely the abandonment of the city center by manufacturing giants General Electric and ALCO. For 20 years Opdyke worked as a scenic painter and architectural model-maker. Ranging from intricate miniature constructions to room-sized installations\, his artwork explores globalization\, consumerism\, and civilization’s abusive relationship with the environment.\n\nShani Peters\nShani Peters is a multi-disciplinary artist based in New Orleans\, LA. She holds a BA from Michigan State University and an MFA from the City College of New York. Her practice encompasses activism histories\, community building\, media subversion\, and the creation of accessible imaginative experiences. Informed by historical research\, Peters’ prints\, collages\, installations\, and videos consistently welcome viewers to involve themselves with the work. Her studio practice overlaps with her public\, project-based\, and collaborative work\, in which she pushes to create environments and experiences that offer respite from painful realities—opportunities for collective momentum\, learning and joy.\n\nSheida Soleimani\nSheida Soleimani resides in Providence\, RI and is a professor of studio art at Brandeis University. Soleimani makes work that melds sculpture\, performance\, film and photography to highlight her critical perspectives on historical and contemporary sociopolitical events across the Middle East. The daughter of political refugees who were persecuted by the Iranian government\, Soleimani focuses on media trends and the dissemination of information in the news\, adapting images from popular press and social media leaks to exist within alternative scenarios. She received a BFA from the University of Cincinnati and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art.\n\nJeffrey Augustine Songco\nJeffrey Augustine Songco is a multidisciplinary artist whose artwork explores the complexity of self-portraiture. As a gay American man of Filipino ethnicity\, Songco’s artwork is a place of representation—an opportunity to perform and playfully cast himself as the protagonist of a postcolonial queer narrative. Born and raised in New Jersey to devout Catholic Filipino immigrants\, his artistic identity developed at a young age with training in classical ballet\, voice\, and musical theater. He holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute. After living in Pittsburgh\, Bushwick\, and San Francisco\, he currently lives and works in Grand Rapids\, Michigan.
