DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. DESCRIPTION:The theory behind inclusive leadership is vast. It has connections with emotional intelligence\, communication\, understanding team dynamics\, mentoring\, and more. The other nine workshops in this series focused on the theory and application. For this round table\, we gathered a panel of faculty and staff who have experience using inclusive leadership in their fields. Join us for a round table where you will learn to go beyond the theory and hear real life experience about using inclusive leadership in practice.\nPanelists\nNeeraja Aravamudan\, Ph.D.\, Interim Co-Director\, Ginsberg Center\nAs Interim Co-Director of the Ginsberg Center\, Neeraja Aravamudan contributes to the strategic leadership of Ginsberg and supports the center’s strategic partnerships with academic units across the university. Aravamudan has focused her professional career in higher education on helping students and faculty to make their teaching and learning more student-centered\, inclusive\, and equitable. Her commitment to social justice education is rooted in her personal experiences as an immigrant from India and her work in anti-bias education. Community-engaged learning brings together her interests in social justice\, teaching and learning\, and values-centered practices.\nKarishma Collette\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Director\, Center for Research on Learning and Teaching\nKarishma Collette earned her B.Sc. in life sciences at the University of Mumbai (India) in 2001. In 2003\, she completed her M.Sc. in industrial biotechnology at Newcastle University (United Kingdom)\, and a Ph.D. in molecular\, cellular and developmental biology at the University of Michigan in 2011. Collette’s dissertation focused on the characterization of a novel Condensin protein complex (Condensin I) in C.elegans mitosis and meiosis. During her Ph.D.\, Collette enjoyed teaching introductory biology and genetics\, and continued her pedagogical training as a postdoc at the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) from August 2012 to April 2014. After her training at CRLT\, she advised U-M undergraduate students interested in careers in the health professions at the Newnan LSA Academic Advising Center\, and managed the peer tutoring and peer mentorship programs at the Science Learning Center. In her current role at CRLT\, Collette consults with and facilitates workshops for faculty\, GSIs\, and undergraduates in instructional roles\, on a variety of topics in teaching and learning. She also directs the winter GSI teaching orientation\, and is the CRLT lead for the CRLT-ELI 994 program. Collette is currently an active member of CRLT’s GSI team and DE&I team.\nKrishna Han\, Ph.D.\, Associate Director\, Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs\nKrishna Han’s (he/him/his) professional student affairs journey in the United States took him from Oberlin College to Bowling Green State University (BGSU) prior to joining the University of Michigan. Originally from Cambodia\, Han graduated from the Royal University of Phnom Penh with a dual degree in biology and education. After completing a master’s degree in community forestry at Shinshu University in Japan he pursued and earned a Ph.D. in regional environmental resources management at Hokkaido University in Japan. Han studied the impacts of economic development policy introduced by the World Bank to Cambodia in 1993 on the livelihood of Indigenous people in the northeastern part of Cambodia and traditional farming system. He worked with various international organizations such as World Vision International and United Nations Environmental Program before moving to the United States. While in the United States\, he pursued and earned another graduate degree in 2003 in college student personnel at BGSU\, where he served as assistant director in the Office of Multicultural Affairs from 2012 to 2018. Han is passionate about and an advocate for global and multicultural education\, cross-cultural understanding\, and social justice. He has a wide range of hobbies and is an avid world traveler. Besides his native Khmer\, he speaks fluently English\, Japanese\, Thai\, and some French.\nDar Mayweather\, Lecturer\, University of North Carolina Wilmington\nDar Mayweather (he\, him\, and his) is a full-time lecturer in the leadership studies minor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Mayweather is a first-generation college student\, with a bachelor’s in criminal justice and a master’s in education with a focus on college student affairs leadership both from Grand Valley State University\, while currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at Eastern Michigan University. Mayweather’s work focuses on Black student protest\, meaning-making in the leadership process\, and inclusion in higher education. Mayweather has over 10 years of professional experience developing co-curricular classrooms and diversity trainings in higher education. He credits a lot of his professional growth to the Social Justice Training Institute and the Intergroup Relations Department at the University of Michigan. He received the King Chavez Parks Future Faculty Fellow Award from the State of Michigan\, the Student Engagement and Success Award from Eastern Michigan University\, the American College Personnel Association Pan African Network Sawubona Award\, multiple Residence Life Hall Council Advisor awards\, and many other nominations. DESCRIPTION:The Halal Metrop­o­lis exhi­bi­tion\, by artist Osman Khan\, pho­tog­ra­pher Razi Jafri\, and his­to­rian Sally How­ell\, explores the facts\, fic­tions\, and imag­i­nar­ies of the Mus­lim population(s) in Detroit and South­east Michi­gan as viewed through his­tor­i­cal research\, doc­u­men­ta­tion of cur­rent con­di­tions\, and explo­rations of future desires. The Halal Metrop­o­lis alludes to the estab­lished and grow­ing Mus­lim pop­u­la­tion in Detroit and its metro area\, one of the largest and most diverse Mus­lim pop­u­la­tions in the U.S.\, whose vis­i­bil­ity is both pro­nounced and extremely present in the city\, yet whose nar­ra­tive seems unusu­ally silent in the larger Detroit story. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. SUMMARY:Performance:Summer Carillon Concert: Tom Gurin (Duke University)
DESCRIPTION:Tom Gurin  performs the second of our \"7 at 7\" Monday night carillon concerts at Lurie Tower in the Eda U. Gerstacker Grove on North Campus. His program ranges from Broadway and film tunes to his own award-winning compositions.\n\nThe annual series takes place at 7 PM on Mondays from June 21 to August 9\, featuring performers from Michigan and around the U.S. playing either Burton or Lurie Tower. The carillon is an outdoor instrument\, and attendees are requested to maintain social distance in the outdoor listening areas surrounding the towers. Attendees are required to follow the University of Michigan\, Washtenaw County\, Michigan state\, and federal guidelines for large outdoor gatherings.\n\nPlease fill out our convenient pre-registration form: https://myumi.ch/ZQWvq. This information will be kept for 21 days after the concert\, and will only be used for contact tracing if confirmed COVID-19 cases become associated with the gathering.\n\nBIOGRAPHY: Tom Gurin (b. 1995) is Duke University Chapel Carillonneur. In May 2021\, he performed the inaugural carillon recital at North Carolina State University. He is a graduate of Yale University\, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in music composition in 2018. At Yale\, he studied composition with Kathryn Alexander and was President of the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs. In 2019\, he graduated with great distinction from the Royal Carillon School 'Jef Denyn' in Mechelen\, Belgium. There\, he studied carillon performance with Eddy Mariën and composition with Erik Vandevoort and Rachel Perfecto. During his studies in Mechelen\, he was a United States Fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation. He has been a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America since 2017.\n\nIn addition to his carillon music\, Gurin is an active composer for orchestras\, chamber concerts\, films\, and other settings. He has contributed to numerous international festivals\, including highSCORE New Music Festival in Pavia\, Italy\, and the Imani Winds Chamber Music Festival at Mannes School of Music in New York City\, where he was an Emerging Composer Fellow. The Yale Symphony Orchestra\, the National Youth Orchestra of China\, the Sonus Foundation for New Music and Contemporary Performing Arts\, and other ensembles and organizations have performed his compositions. In fall 2021\, he will begin a year-long artist residency at the United States Foundation in Paris as a Fulbright Scholar. A recipient of the joint Fulbright-Harriet Hale Woolley Award\, he will study in the music composition studio at the École Normale de Musique de Paris while on leave from Duke. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. DESCRIPTION:The Halal Metrop­o­lis exhi­bi­tion\, by artist Osman Khan\, pho­tog­ra­pher Razi Jafri\, and his­to­rian Sally How­ell\, explores the facts\, fic­tions\, and imag­i­nar­ies of the Mus­lim population(s) in Detroit and South­east Michi­gan as viewed through his­tor­i­cal research\, doc­u­men­ta­tion of cur­rent con­di­tions\, and explo­rations of future desires. The Halal Metrop­o­lis alludes to the estab­lished and grow­ing Mus­lim pop­u­la­tion in Detroit and its metro area\, one of the largest and most diverse Mus­lim pop­u­la­tions in the U.S.\, whose vis­i­bil­ity is both pro­nounced and extremely present in the city\, yet whose nar­ra­tive seems unusu­ally silent in the larger Detroit story. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. One attempt to break the cycle was the pioneering investments in banana plantations in former conflict areas that initially solved multidimensional problems involving property protection\, harmonization of local cultural norms with international business practices\, and complementary investments.  However\, this model has recently been beset by external and internal challenges that threaten business viability—and also the peace it provides.
