SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. SUMMARY:Presentation:Examining the Risk of Potentially Preventable Hospitalization in Adults with Congenital and Acquired Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Link to registration: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0EcJEoE7QP-KtRCtxJnRqw\n\nAdults with pediatric-onset (cerebral palsy/spina bifida (CP/SB)) or acquired disabilities (spinal cord injury (SCI) or multiple sclerosis (MS)) are more likely than those without disability to develop medical complications. Little is known about potentially preventable hospitalizations (PPH) among adults with disabilities. PPHs are preventable if a patient had timely access to care. The objective of this study was to examine potential risk and protective factors for PPH\, comparing adults with aforementioned disabilities to people without. Our results indicate that adults with disabilities were at greater odds for PPH compared to people without disabilities. Use of preventative services such as annual wellness visit had substantial protective association against PPH. Attendees will learn: (1) how to work with administrative claims data and medical codes to identify appropriate case and control groups\; (2) how to define covariates and outcome measures in claims data\; (3) how to use various modeling techniques to test a hypothesis\; (4) how to interpret the results and develop policy implications.\n\nThis webinar is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a neuromodulation technique that applies electrical stimulation to the spinal cord to alter neural activity or processing. While SCS has historically been used as a last resort therapy for chronic pain management\, novel applications and technologies have recently been developed that either increase the efficacy of treatment for chronic pain or drive neural activity to produce muscular activity/movement following a paralyzing spinal cord injury (SCI). Despite these recent innovations\, there remain fundamental questions concerning the neural recruitment underlying these efficacious results. This work evaluated the neural activity and mechanisms for two novel SCS applications: closed-loop spinal cord stimulation for pain management\, and ventral\, high frequency spinal cord stimulation (HF-SCS) for inspiratory muscle activation following a SCI.\n\nTo evaluate neural activity\, I developed computational models of SCS. Models consisted of 3 components: a finite element model (FEM) of the spinal cord to predict voltages during stimulation\, biophysical neuron models\, and algorithms to apply time-dependent extracellular voltages to the neuron models and simulate their response. While this cutting-edge modeling methodology could be used to predict neural activity following stimulation\, it was unclear how common anatomical or technical model simplifications affected neural predictions. Therefore\, the initial goal of this work was to evaluate how modeling assumptions influence neural behavior.\n\nMy initial work identified how several relevant anatomical and technical factors influence model predictions of neural activity. To evaluate these factors\, I designed an FEM of a T9 thoracic spine with an implanted electrode. Then\, I sequentially removed details from the model and quantified the changes in neural predictions. I identified several factors with profound (>30%) impacts on neural thresholds\, including overall model impedance (for voltage-controlled stimulation)\, the presence of a detailed vertebral column\, and dura mater conductivity. I also identified several factors that could safely be ignored in future models. This work will be invaluable as a guide for future model development.\n\nNext\, I developed a canine model to evaluate T2 ventral HF-SCS for inspiratory muscle activation. I designed and positioned two neuron models hypothesized to lead to inspiratory behavior: ventrolateral funiculus fibers (VLF) leading to diaphragm activation and inspiratory intercostal motoneurons. With this model\, I predicted robust VLF and T2-T5 motoneuron recruitment within the physiologic range of stimulation. Additionally\, I designed two stimulation leads that maximize inspiratory neuron recruitment. The finalized leads were evaluated via in vivo experiments\, which found excellent agreement with the model. This work builds our mechanistic understanding of this novel therapy\, improves its implementation\, and aids in future translational efforts towards human subjects.\n\nFinally\, I developed a computational model to evaluate closed-loop stimulation for chronic pain. This work characterized the neural origins of the evoked compound action potential (ECAP)\, the controlling biomarker of closed-loop stimulation. I modified my modeling methodology to predict ECAPs generated during low thoracic dorsal stimulation in humans\, which matched with experimental measurements. This modeling work showed that ECAP properties depend on activation of a narrow range of neuron diameters and quantified how anatomical and stimulation factors (CSF thickness\, stimulation configuration\, lead position\, pulse width) influence ECAP morphology\, timing\, and neural recruitment. DESCRIPTION:The Halal Metrop­o­lis exhi­bi­tion\, by artist Osman Khan\, pho­tog­ra­pher Razi Jafri\, and his­to­rian Sally How­ell\, explores the facts\, fic­tions\, and imag­i­nar­ies of the Mus­lim population(s) in Detroit and South­east Michi­gan as viewed through his­tor­i­cal research\, doc­u­men­ta­tion of cur­rent con­di­tions\, and explo­rations of future desires. The Halal Metrop­o­lis alludes to the estab­lished and grow­ing Mus­lim pop­u­la­tion in Detroit and its metro area\, one of the largest and most diverse Mus­lim pop­u­la­tions in the U.S.\, whose vis­i­bil­ity is both pro­nounced and extremely present in the city\, yet whose nar­ra­tive seems unusu­ally silent in the larger Detroit story. Join us over Zoom to explore the Kelsey Museum from the comfort of your home. \n\nThe theme of this week's tour is \"Location\, Location\, Location: Cultural Interactions at Seleucia-on-the-Tigris.\"\nLocation matters not only for modern real estate\, but also for ancient cities. Seleucia-on-the-Tigris was located at the narrowest point between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers\, 18 miles south of modern Baghdad in Iraq. This strategic location at the crossroads of east and west attracted a diverse population: Babylonians\, Macedonians\, Greeks\, Jews\, and Syrians came here to live and conduct trade. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. DESCRIPTION:Eva Albalghiti performs the third of our \"7 at 7\" Monday night carillon concerts at Lurie Tower on the Eda U. Gerstacker Grove on North Campus. Bring a picnic!\n\nThe annual series takes place at 7 PM on Mondays from June 21 to August 9\, featuring performers from Michigan and around the U.S. playing either Burton or Lurie Tower. Concerts are free and family-friendly. The carillon is an outdoor instrument\, and attendees are requested to maintain social distance in the outdoor listening areas surrounding the towers. Attendees are required to follow the University of Michigan\, Washtenaw County\, Michigan state\, and federal guidelines for large outdoor gatherings.\n\nPlease fill out our convenient pre-registration form: https://myumi.ch/ZQWvq. This information will be kept for 21 days after the concert\, and will only be used for contact tracing if confirmed COVID-19 cases become associated with the gathering.\n\nBIOGRAPHY: Eva Albalghiti is originally from Silver Spring\, MD. She began playing carillon at Yale University\, where she took lessons with Ellen Dickinson and was a member of the Yale Guild of Carillonneurs for three years. In 2018\, she became a Carillonneur Member of the Guild of Carillonneurs of North America. After taking a two-year break from carillon to pursue a research opportunity in Beijing\, China\, she came to the University of Michigan in 2020 to pursue her PhD in Environmental Engineering.

Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Mapping and Real-time Navigation with application to Small UAS Urgent Landing
DESCRIPTION:Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) are expected to proliferate in low-altitude airspace over the coming decade requiring flight near buildings and over people.Robust urgent landing capabilities including landing site selection are required.\n\nHowever\, conventional fixed-wing emergency landing sites such as open fields and empty roadways are rare in and around cities. This motivates our work to uniquely consider a city's many unoccupied flat rooftops as possible nearby landing sites. We propose novel methods to identify flat rooftop buildings\, isolate their flat surfaces\, and find touchdown points that maximize distance to obstacles. We model flat rooftop surfaces as polygons that capture their boundaries and possible obstructions on them.\n \nThis thesis offers five specific contributions to support urgent rooftop landing. First\, the Polylidar algorithm is developed which enables efficient non-convex polygon extraction with interior holes from 2D point sets.  A key insight of this work is a novel boundary following method that contrasts computationally expensive geometric unions of triangles. Results from real-world and synthetic benchmarks show comparable accuracy and more than four times speedup compared to other state-of-the-art methods. \n\nSecond\, we extend polygon extraction from 2D to 3D data where polygons represent flat surfaces and interior holes representing obstacles. Our Polylidar3D algorithm transforms point clouds into a triangular mesh for which planar segmentation and polygon extraction occur in parallel. Dominant plane normals are identified and used to parallelize and regularize planar segments in the mesh. Immediately after a plane has been segmented a polygon extraction task is dynamically spawned. The result is a versatile and extremely fast algorithm for non-convex polygon extraction of 3D data.\n\nThird\, we propose a framework for classifying roof shape (e.g.\, flat) within a city. We process satellite images\, airborne LiDAR point clouds\, and map building outlines to generate both a LiDAR image and a cropped satellite image of each building. Convolutional neural networks are independently trained for each modality to extract high level features and sent to a random forest classifier for final roof shape prediction. This research contributes the largest multi-city annotated dataset with over 4\,500 rooftops used to train and test models. Our results show flat rooftops are identified with  90% precision and recall. \n\nFourth\, we integrate Polylidar3D and our roof shape prediction model to reliably extract flat rooftop surfaces from archived data sources.  We model risk as an innovative combination of landing site and path risk metrics and conduct a multi-objective Pareto front analysis for sUAS urgent landing in cities. We create a multi-goal planner that guarantees a risk-optimal solution is found rapidly by avoiding exploration of high-risk options. The proposed emergency planning framework enables a sUAS to select an emergency landing site and corresponding flight plan with minimum total risk.\n\nFifth\, we verify a chosen rooftop landing site on real-time vertical approach with on-board LiDAR and camera sensors. Our method contributes an innovative fusion of semantic segmentation using neural networks with computational geometry as a hybrid algorithm robust to individual sensor and method failure.  We construct a high-fidelity simulated city in the Unreal game engine with a statistically-accurate representation of rooftop obstacles. We show our method leads to greater than 4% improvement in intersection-over-union (IOU) accuracy in landing site identification compared to using LiDAR only. Finally\, we evaluate results in real-world indoor flight experiments.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Sexual reproduction in eukaryotes relies on meiosis\, a specialized form of cell division that enables genetic diversity via recombination and segregation of alleles. The basic program is conserved from yeasts to mammals. A central question is how each chromosome identifies its homolog among numerous potential partners. The overarching goal of our research is to understand how the nuclear organization and motion of chromosomes contributes to the correct pairing\, synapsis\, and recombination of homologs during meiosis I prophase – and how infidelity in these processes leads to chromosomal abnormalities that underlie infertility\, birth defects\, or pregnancy loss in humans.
