SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Garden of Earthy Delights: Ceramic Sculptures by Ann Arbor Potters Guild at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the synergy between nature’s beauty and complexity\, and in partnership with the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, artists from the Ann Arbor Potters Guild created work centered around Michigan’s natural landscapes and specifically for the Great Lakes Garden at Matthaei. Potters Guild artists created eight free-standing sculptures using the full range of traditional ceramic methods and tools\, the potter’s wheel\, press molds\, coil building\, slab construction\, and sculpting. Depictions range from naturalistic and representational\, to abstract\, as well as a whimsical nod or two to the timeless role of fantasy and myth in humankind’s communion with nature. Exhibit is free but scheduled reservations are required to visit the botanical gardens. Use this link to book your visit: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aadad22a2fd0-matthaei1

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Yelping From Home: The Tech Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk: How I became a Systems Engineer\n\nEver since I was a kid\, I was intrigued with how computers worked and I built my first one at the age of 12. In this talk\, I will explain why I chose the engineering path early in my career. I will describe my career path from my help desk days in biotech to my current position as a systems engineer at Yelp\, and give advice on how to be successful when it comes to choosing a rewarding career path.\n\n--\n\nYelp’s mission is to connect people with great local businesses\, and one of the teams working behind the scenes to make that happen is our five star engineering and product teams.\n\nPlaying an active role in our community is a value that we have strongly prioritized over the years. Typically we would invite you to come to Yelp’s HQ to network\, grab a slice of ‘za\, and learn about the technology and culture behind Yelp. With stay-at-home orders across the globe\, Yelp (like many of you) has had no choice but to adapt to these changes. We understand that this is a strange and challenging time for many\, so we’d like to invite you to join us as we navigate this new normal for the tech community together.\n\nTo stay connected\, create space for folks to collaborate and share some of the things Yelp has been working on\, we are launching our very own virtual tech talk series. This series of talks will feature Yelpers from engineering and product and will focus on themes such as career development\, technical skills\, workplace challenges and Yelp’s response to COVID-19.

SUMMARY:Presentation:BME Ph.D. Defense: Yuan Li
DESCRIPTION:Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor in adults and has a poor prognosis with a median survival of approximately 14 months. Clinical standard assessment of therapy response and tumor progression is based upon post-contrast T1-weighted (T1W) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) T2-weighted (T2W) magnetic resonance images (MRI).  However\, contrast enhancement observed on the post-contrast T1W MRI is affected not only by tumor growth but also effects of radiation\, anti-angiogenesis drugs and chemotherapy\, due to the fact that it represents blood-brain barrier disruption. Another problem is that abnormality on T2W FLAIR images is influenced by T2 changes of tumor cells as well as edema and necrosis that always co-exist within GBM. Diffusion weighted (DW) imaging has been proposed to overcome these limitations. Conventional DW images quantify apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) with b-values between 0 and 1000 s/mm2 using a mono-exponential decay. One limitation is that co-existence of edema in clinical GBM elevates ADC.\n \nIn diffusion MRI\, there are three dimensions of parameter spaces that we could explore in research —b value\, diffusion time (t) and echo time (TE). Hence\, we investigated and developed high order diffusion models in these three spaces and evaluated whether they could reveal more features of GBM.\n \nIn the b-value space\, we investigated a microstructure model (MSM)\, in which modulation of diffusion gradient with cell size is considered\, with high b-value diffusion images in the patients with GBM pre-radiation therapy (RT). We found apparent cell size (ARS)\, extracellular diffusion coefficient (Dex) and intracellular fractional volume (Vin) in tumor were significantly greater than ones in normal tissue and edema. In addition\, we investigated diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) in GBM pre-RT and mid-RT\, and found pre-RT mean kurtosis of the tumor could provide a predictive value of overall survival (OS) additional to clinical prognostic factors.\n \nIn the TE space\, T2-Relaxation-Diffusion correlation experiments can be powerful in resolving water compartments with respect to their size and chemical composition\, but the problem is ill-posed. We simplified the T2-Relaxation-Diffusion correlation to consider the T2 values and diffusion coefficients in a 2x2 fashion. We found that there were significant differences between fast and slow diffusion coefficients and between associated T2 values in tumor\, cortex\, deep GM\, and edema. Multivariate Cox model showed the fractional volume of slow component (Vs) mid-RT may add a predictive value to clinical factors.\n \nIn diffusion time space\, we applied three different diffusion times using pulsed diffusion gradients (PG) and oscillating gradients at frequencies of 30 Hz (OS30) and 50 Hz (OS50) using a prototype sequence. Using a random walk with barriers model\, we estimated cell diameter\, unrestricted diffusion coefficient (D0) at a short time limit\, bulk diffusion coefficient (Dinf) at a long time limit\, cell membrane permeability and effective restriction in the contrast-enhanced tumor. Those parameters provide microstructural information in the GBM and need to be further investigated and validated with pathology.\n \nPrevious studies have mainly investigated high order diffusion models in prostate cancer and xenograft tumor models\, and only a few studies investigated GBM. The current knowledge about the relationship between model parameters and physiological/pathological features in GBM are still limited. Our research in GBM could lead to better imaging means for GBM diagnosis\, tumor target definition for radiation therapy\, and therapy response assessment.\n \nDate: Thursday\, July 22\, 2021\nTime: 2:00 PM\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/96213084276\n\nChair: Dr. Yue Cao

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Improving Collaboration Between Drivers and Automated Vehicles with Trust Processing Methods
DESCRIPTION:Trust has gained attention in the Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) field\, as it is considered an antecedent of people's reliance on machines.\nPeople rely on and use machines they trust and refrain from using machines they do not trust. The advances in robotic perception technologies open paths for the development of machines that can be aware of people's trust by observing humans' behaviors and identifying whether they are being trusted or not by those people. This dissertation explores the role and the intricacies of trust in the interactions of humans and robots\, particularly Automated Vehicles (AVs).\nNovel methods and models are proposed for perceiving and processing drivers' trust in AVs and for determining humans' natural trust or robots' artificial trust. Two high-level problems are addressed: the problem of avoiding or reducing miscalibrations of drivers' trust in AVs and the problem of how to use trust to dynamically allocate tasks between a human and a robot that collaborate.\n\nA complete solution is proposed for the problem of avoiding or reducing trust miscalibrations\, which combines methods for estimating and influencing drivers' trust through interactions with the AV. Three main contributions stem from that solution: the characterization of risk factors that affect drivers’ trust in AVs\; the development of a new method for real-time trust estimation\; and the development of a new method for trust calibration.\n\nAlthough the development of a complete trust-based solution for the problem of dynamically allocating tasks between a human and a robot remains an open problem\, this dissertation takes a step forward in that direction. The fourth contribution here proposed is the development of a unified bi-directional model for predicting natural and artificial trust. This trust model allows for the numerical computation of human's trust and robot's trust\, which is represented by the probability of a given agent to successfully execute a given task. As a probability of success\, trust can readily be used for the computation of expected rewards and costs for tasks to be executed by each possible agent and can guide decision-making algorithms based on the optimization of those rewards and costs.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Belief Representations for Planning with Contact Feedback
DESCRIPTION:Chair: \nDmitry Berenson\n\nAbstract:\nWhile reaching for your morning coffee you may accidentally bump into the table\, yet you reroute your motion with ease and grab your cup. An effective autonomous robot will need to have a similarly seamless recovery from unexpected contact. As simple as this may seem\, even sensing this contact is a challenge for many robots\, and when detected contact is often treated as an error that an operator is expected to resolve. Robots operating in our daily environments will need to reason about the information they have gained from contact and replan autonomously.\n\nThis thesis examines planning under uncertainty with contact sensitive robot arms. Robots do not have skin and cannot precisely sense the location of contact. This leads to the proposed Collision Hypothesis Set model for representing a belief over the possible occupancy of the world sensed through contact. To capture the specifics of planning in an unknown world with this measurement model\, this thesis develops a POMDP approach called the Blindfolded Traveler's Problem. A good prior over the possible obstacles the robot might encounter is key to effective planning. This thesis develops a neural network approach for sampling potential obstacles that are consistent with both what a robot sees from its camera and what it feels through contact.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Contextualized Monitoring in the Marine Environment
DESCRIPTION:Co-Chair:\nKira Barton & Alex Shorter\n\nAbstract:\nMarine mammal monitoring has seen improvements in the last few decades with advances made to both the monitoring hardware and post-processing computation methods. However\, these improvements have primarily been focused on and implemented in wild animal tracking\, with less attention paid to the managed environment. This is a particularly important deficiency\, as the cooperative nature of institutionally managed animals allows for research on swimming kinematics and energetics behavior with an intricacy that is difficult to achieve in the wild. This dissertation uses robotics-inspired physical kinematics and localization techniques to address two primary limitations in marine mammal monitoring: 1) the lack of persistent\, absolute estimates of animal swimming energetics and kinematics\, and 2) the lack of a robust\, precise localization method for managed cetaceans. To resolve these\, the hardware and animal tracking methods developed to enable the rest of the dissertation are first defined. Next\, a physics-based approach to directly monitor cetacean swimming energetics is both presented and implemented to study animal propulsion patterns under varying effort conditions. Finally\, a high-fidelity 3D monitoring framework is introduced for tracking institutionally managed cetaceans\, and is applied alongside the energetics estimation method to provide a first look at the potential of spatially-contextualized animal monitoring.
