DESCRIPTION:This event is the last of the Thursday Morning Lecture Series on Our Changing Economic Landscape.\n\nHow did the American health care system develop its fragmented\, irrational form? The answer is found in an unlikely place—the construction of the modern insurance system through collective bargaining in industry in the postwar years. The organized economic power of industrial workers had a transformative effect on the health care market and reshaped health care policy\, as workers’ efforts to preserve their own health and well-being interacted with emerging deindustrialization and rising social inequality.\n\nOur speaker\, Gabriel Winant\, is a historian at the University of Chicago. His first book\, The Next Shift: The Fall of Industry and the Rise of Health Care in Rust Belt America\, was published this year by Harvard University Press.\n\nPre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Nov 12\, 2021 - January 22\, 2022\nPublic Opening and Award Ceremony: November 12\, 2021\nOrganized by Stamps Gallery\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative is a new awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. This inaugural program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. \nThe call for work went out to artists across the state in March 2020. In July 2020\, Envision jurors Carla Acevedo-Yates\, Curator\, MCA Chicago\; Ken Aptekar (BFA &#039\;73)\, Artist\; and Loring Randolph (BFA &#039\;04)\, Director\, Frieze New York\; gathered virtually to review the submissions. \nAfter evaluating 259 submissions from across the state\, the jurors selected five finalists to receive a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery. \nOn December 10\, 2021\, one finalist will be named the 2021 Envision Award recipient\, receiving a cash prize. \nThe exhibition will tour to different venues in Michigan\, including the Crooked Tree Art Center in Traverse City. \nEnvision Finalists\nNayda Collazo-Llorens examines the way in which we perceive and process information\, dealing with concepts of navigation\, memory\, language\, hyperconnectivity and noise through her interdisciplinary creative practice. DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition: Nov 12\, 2021 - January 22\, 2022\nPublic Opening and Award Ceremony: November 12\, 2021\nOrganized by Stamps Gallery\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative is a new awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. This inaugural program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. \nThe call for work went out to artists across the state in March 2020. In July 2020\, Envision jurors Carla Acevedo-Yates\, Curator\, MCA Chicago\; Ken Aptekar (BFA &#039\;73)\, Artist\; and Loring Randolph (BFA &#039\;04)\, Director\, Frieze New York\; gathered virtually to review the submissions. \nAfter evaluating 259 submissions from across the state\, the jurors selected five finalists to receive a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery. \nOn December 10\, 2021\, one finalist will be named the 2021 Envision Award recipient\, receiving a cash prize. \nThe exhibition will tour to different venues in Michigan\, including the Crooked Tree Art Center in Traverse City. \nEnvision Finalists\nNayda Collazo-Llorens examines the way in which we perceive and process information\, dealing with concepts of navigation\, memory\, language\, hyperconnectivity and noise through her interdisciplinary creative practice. DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. DESCRIPTION:Blackthorn welcomes you to the rich tapestry of Celtic music.\n\nTraditional songs of emigration\, sea shanties\, lively jigs and reels\, and ancient airs combine with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs for a musical experience that captures the history and legend of Ireland and its people.\n\nWhat makes a Blackthorn show unique is the variety of tunes\, tempos and textures. Each member of the band plays multiple instruments\, including wooden flute\, accordion\, tin whistle\, five string banjo\, cittern\, bones and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band’s tight blend of four part harmony.\n\nBlackthorn has played throughout the Great Lakes region since 1984. Based in Detroit\, they can be found regularly at O’Mara’s Pub and Restaurant in Berkley. Other venues include concert halls\, universities and festivals\, including main stage appearances at the prestigious Michigan Irish Festival and world renowned Milwaukee Irish Fest.\n\nMetro Detroiters fondly remember Blackthorn’s annual appearances on J. P. McCarthy’s St. Patrick’s Day show on WJR radio in the 1980s and 1990s\, and later with Paul W. Smith. They have released seven CDs\, and have performed with guest musicians such as members of the Michigan Opera Theater and the Motor City Brass Band. In 2010\, Blackthorn was voted “Best Folk Band/Artist” by the readers of The Detroit Metro Times.\n\nFrom large festival\, to pub\, restaurant or intimate performing arts center\, Blackthorn provides time tested entertainment. DESCRIPTION:Connections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project\, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some\, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration\, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.\n\nMartín Vargas\, artist and curator of this exhibition\, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work\, but also during select Art Lab studio hours\, which will feature several of the artists working in person.\n\nConnections\, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. DESCRIPTION:In-person/Hybrid seminar co-hosted by the Center for RNA Biomedicine\, the Department of Biological Chemistry and the Department of Biophysics\n\nTalk title: “Modulation of the MALT1 pre-mRNA structure by hnRNP proteins regulates T cell activation”\n\nKey words: pre-mRNA\, hnRNP\, NMR\, SHAPE\, structure\nAbstract: Alternative splicing is controlled by differential binding of trans-acting RNA binding proteins (RBPs) to cis-regulatory pre-mRNA elements. How pre-mRNA secondary structure affects recognition by RBPs and determines alternative exon usage is poorly understood. The MALT1 paracaspase is a key component of signaling pathways that mediate innate and adaptive immune responses. Alternative splicing of MALT1 exon7 is critical for controlling optimal T cell activation. Here\, we demonstrate that MALT1 pre-mRNA splicing depends on RNA structural elements that shield the splice sites of the alternatively spliced exon7. The RBPs hnRNP U and hnRNP L bind comparably and competitively to identical stem-loop RNA structures flanking the 5’ and 3’ splice sites of MALT1 exon7. While hnRNP U stabilizes RNA stem-loop conformations that maintain exon7 skipping\, hnRNP L destabilizes these RNA elements to facilitate recruitment of the essential splicing factor U2AF2 to promote exon7 inclusion. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest\, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes\, such as\, the Michigan house catalog industry\, changing architectural styles\, the business of selling homes\, societal and cultural implications\, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back\, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibit focuses on the concept of Ujima (collective work and responsibility in Swahili) as it pertains to activism on the campus of the University of Michigan over the years. By seeing how collective actions can lead to powerful movements\, the exhibit presents a chronological display demonstrating the importance of calling for change. \nThe majority of photos and articles originate from campus resources\, including the Bentley Historical Library\, the Michigan Daily's archives and other original materials. \nUJIMA is dedicated to the students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni of the University of Michigan who envisioned and exemplified the principle of Ujima to bring about a more equitable and inclusive university through their thoughts and actions. \nThere is also a virtual audio/visual tour of the exhibit which can be accessed at:myumi.ch/7ZQn0

As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you.
