SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Ian Laga\, PhD Candidate\, Department of Statistics\, Penn State University
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Key populations are populations that due to higher-risk behaviors\, are more likely to live with and transmit infectious diseases like HIV. These populations include female sex workers\, men who have sex with men\, and drug users. In order to implement efficient HIV and infectious disease prevention programs\, organizations need to understand both how large these key populations are and where they live. Aggregated relational data (ARD)\, formed from \"How many X's do you know?\" questions\, is a powerful tool for learning important network characters with incomplete network data. Compared to traditional survey methods\, ARD is attractive as it does not require a sample from the target population and does not ask respondents to self-reveal their own status. This is helpful for studying key populations who may be hesitant to reveal their status. The Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) collected ARD to estimate the size of HIV-related subpopulations in Ukraine. To analyze this data\, we propose a new ARD model which incorporates respondent and subpopulation covariates in a regression framework and adds a correlation structure to the responses. The resulting size estimates of those most-at-risk of HIV infection can improve the HIV response efficiency in Ukraine. Additionally\, the proposed model allows us to better understand two network features: 1. What characteristics affect who respondents know\, and 2. How is knowing someone from one group related to knowing people from other groups. These features can allow researchers to better recruit marginalized individuals into the prevention and treatment programs.\n\nhttps://ilaga.github.io/

SUMMARY:Performance:Albert Lee
DESCRIPTION:British guitar legend Albert Lee\, regarded by many as one of the world’s finest guitar players\, with a career spanning more than 50 years\, needs no introduction for country music\, blues\, and rock fans. Widely hailed for his fingerstyle and hybrid picking technique\, Albert Lee helped to redefine country guitar for a whole generation of players with his song \"Country Boy.\" Albert’s many career highlights include two Grammy wins\, five years in the Eric Clapton band\, and stints with the Rolling Stones' Bill Wyman\, The Crickets\, the Everly Brothers\, Joe Cocker\, Emmylou Harris\, Rodney Crowell and many more. Take it from Emmylou\, who says\, \"When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth\, I'll be able to say—with pride if that's allowed—that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee.\"

SUMMARY:Well-being:VIRTUAL | CEW+Inspire Midweek Mindfulness-Guided Sit
DESCRIPTION:As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative\, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.\n\nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link: https://myumi.ch/r8zv7\n\nMindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing\, focus\, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human\, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection\, silence\, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual\, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being\, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community\, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices\, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds\, moment to moment\, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short\, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.\n\nOn Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm\, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.
