These populations include female sex workers\, men who have sex with men\, and drug users. In order to implement efficient HIV and infectious disease prevention programs\, organizations need to understand both how large these key populations are and where they live. Aggregated relational data (ARD)\, formed from \"How many X's do you know?\" questions\, is a powerful tool for learning important network characters with incomplete network data. Compared to traditional survey methods\, ARD is attractive as it does not require a sample from the target population and does not ask respondents to self-reveal their own status. This is helpful for studying key populations who may be hesitant to reveal their status. The Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) collected ARD to estimate the size of HIV-related subpopulations in Ukraine. To analyze this data\, we propose a new ARD model which incorporates respondent and subpopulation covariates in a regression framework and adds a correlation structure to the responses. The resulting size estimates of those most-at-risk of HIV infection can improve the HIV response efficiency in Ukraine. Additionally\, the proposed model allows us to better understand two network features: 1. What characteristics affect who respondents know\, and 2. How is knowing someone from one group related to knowing people from other groups. In this talk\, I will discuss a decade of observations from a seasonally dry forest in Costa Rica with data from Puerto Rico\, Colombia\, and Mexico. The overall goal of these studies is to understand how dry forest composition and dynamics change in relation to intra- and interannual variability in rainfall\, and along geographic gradients in edaphic properties and successional age. In this talk\, we introduce the optimal transport problem and present concrete applications of this theory in statistics. In particular\, we will propose a general framework for distribution-free nonparametric testing in multi-dimensions\, based on a notion of \"multivariate ranks\" defined using the theory of optimal transport. We demonstrate the applicability of this approach by constructing exactly distribution-free tests for two classical nonparametric problems: (i) testing for the equality of two multivariate distributions\, and (ii) testing for mutual independence between two random vectors. We investigate the consistency and asymptotic distributions of these tests\, both under the null and local contiguous alternatives. We further study their local power and asymptotic (Pitman) efficiency\, and show that a subclass of these tests achieve attractive efficiency lower bounds that mimic the remarkable efficiency results of Hodges\nand Lehmann (1956) and Chernoff and Savage (1958). Biological molecules such as proteins\, peptides\, and DNA possess a rich palette of self-assembly motifs and chemical functional diversity\, and are attractive building blocks for the synthesis of such nanomaterials. In this talk\, we will describe research in creating hybrid materials that incorporate proteins and peptides with DNA nanotechnology to create cages\, nanofibers\, and 3D crystals with a high degree of programmability and nanoscale resolution. Key to these endeavors will be (bio)molecular design\, organic chemistry for linking components in a site-specific fashion\, and the tuning of multiple self-assembly \"modes\" to create hybrid structures. The Virginia native earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy\, a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor\, a master’s degree in naval architecture and marine engineering from the University of Michigan\, a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the Johns Hopkins University\, Baltimore\, Maryland\, and a doctorate in systems engineering from the George Washington University\, Washington\, D.C. Douglas served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a naval architect\, salvage engineer\, damage control assistant\, and officer of the deck. Upon selection\, Douglas was a senior professional staff member at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (APL) working on maritime robotics\, planetary defense\, and space exploration missions. The development of these metasomatic features ranges from readily identified reaction zones between the eclogite and host gneiss to shear zones where the spatial relationships between eclogite blocks and host gneiss are completely obscured. Block-selvage relationships within the Luliang Shan HP/UHP belt (North Qaidam\, China) and the Tso Morari UHP terrane (NW Himalaya\, India) approximate end members of the selvage preservation process. Here we apply whole-rock and incompatible trace element compositions coupled with B and O isotopic data in white mica to constrain the relationship of metasomatism vs. deformation during selvage formation. Within the Luliang Shan\, extensive fluid flow formed thick\, compositionally hybridized phengite- and garnet-bearing selvages between eclogite (SiO2 ~ 50%) and quartzofeldspathic gneiss (SiO2 ~ 80%). The Luliang Shan HP selvages have intermediate SiO2 and range from 5-10 m in thickness as “halos” around spheroidal eclogite blocks. Volatile enrichment at near-UHP conditions in the selvage is indicated by enrichment of Li\, Cs\, Ba\, Ar\, and δ18O and very light δ11B values in phengite. The retrograde muscovite from the host gneiss is low in Li\, Cs\, Rb\, and Sr but possess remarkably high B concentrations (up to 3000 ppm) and positive δ11B values that are best explained by interaction with fluids devolatilized from accreted sediments within cooler regions of the subduction zone. Alternatively\, the Tso Morari UHP terrane features boudinaged discoids of eclogite encased within highly strained quartzofeldspathic gneiss. Whole rock major element sampling performed normal to the foliation reveal consistently high SiO2 (78-80%). Highly variable degrees of metasomatic recrystallization occur within the phengite-rich rocks spatially associated with eclogite. An older diaspora was created in the 19th century through the transportation of nearly two million Indians to the Caribbean and elsewhere as indentured labor. The mixing of African- and Indian-diasporic cultures in Trinidad\, Suriname\, and Guyana has produced a dazzling mélange of hybrid visual\, performance\, and sonic forms\, many of which are centrally informed by popular Indian cinema\, a key cultural presence in the region since the 1930s.\n \n Through the case study of an Indian performing duo\, Babla and Kanchan\, whose film music shows were wildly popular in the Anglophone Caribbean in the 1980s\, this talk examines the pulsating energies of cultural traffic between the Caribbean and the Bombay film industry\, mapping multi-directional\, transoceanic creolization across the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. A little-known circuit of orchestra performers carried reverberations from their Caribbean shows to produce innovations in the aural scape of India’s film capital\, Bombay\, which appropriated chutney and soca songs in its blockbusters.\n \n I employ a transregional mode of analysis that considers the interplay of spatial scales between the local\, national\, and global\, as well as the temporal scales of empire\, slavery\, indenture\, and postcoloniality to understand how the movement of commodities\, capital\, and labor produce certain cultural circuits and film industrial formations. The traffic of labor and culture across oceanic media pathways are embodied in film music orchestras like Babla and Kanchan’s that carry sonic and kinetic practices across regions\, languages\, and Black and brown racial identities\, producing as it were\, a cinematic cosmopolitanism from below. Studying cinema’s intermedial networks between and across Bombay and the Caribbean illuminates the multi-sited enfoldings of transcultural\, transregional exchanges that extend and enrich conversations on race\, media\, and identity.\n \n Usha Iyer is Assistant Professor of Film and Media Studies in the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University. Their book\, *Dancing Women: Choreographing Corporeal Histories of Hindi Cinema* (Oxford University Press\, 2020)\, examines constructions of gender\, stardom\, sexuality\, and spectacle in Hindi cinema through women’s labor\, collaborative networks\, and gestural genealogies to produce a corporeal history of South Asian cultural modernities.
