SUMMARY:Other:Poetry Blast!
DESCRIPTION:Complete details at https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/programs/2022-poetry-blast.html.\n\nApril is National Poetry Month\, the largest literary celebration in the world. This year we're joining the tens of millions of readers\, students\, teachers\, librarians\, booksellers\, publishers\, families\, and\, of course\, poets\, in marking poetry's important place in our lives. Our goal is for everyone in our community to read a poem\, write a poem\, or listen to a poem in April. Why? As editor and teacher Alice Osborn said\, \"Poetry is like the Windex on a grubby car window—it bares open the vulnerabilities of human beings so we can all relate to each other a little better.\"\n\nHow to Get Involved\n\nNoon Poems\nTake a few minutes to listen to a poem. Every weekday at noon in April\, our Youtube channel will feature a U-M faculty member reading one of their poems. Videos will also be archived for those who wish to listen later. If you'd like to receive a daily reminder in your inbox\, sign up here: http://eepurl.com/hrZTGv. \n\nPrompt a Poem!—A Daily April Poetry Challenge\nCreative expression through poetry for everyone! Every weekday in April\, people from all walks of life can unite behind a common prompt by writing a poem. Sign up here to receive the daily prompts in your inbox\, or look here where we will list them. Many thanks to Laura Kasischke for creating the prompts and collaborating on Prompt a Poem.\n\nPop-Up Poems\nStroll around campus and read a poem! We've teamed up with Michigan Quarterly Review to make poetry part of the campus landscape. Look for poems all over campus in windows\, on the diag\, on buses\, and more.

The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Performance:Griffin House
DESCRIPTION:Proof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show. \n\nOhio-born\, Nashville-based songwriter Griffin House merges irresistible pop-rock hooks with moody Americana shades and an ability to boil his experiences down to sparse songs. Influenced by a line of artists running from Woody Guthrie to Wilco\, Griffin developed a distinctive style marked by passionate melodies and layers of ambient guitar. His breakthrough album\, \"Flying Upside Down\,\" was recorded with members of Tom Petty's Heartbreakers. Griffin's intelligent and heartfelt lyrics and melodies have garnered commercial and critical acclaim alike. From being featured on the CBS Sunday Morning Show and CNN Newsroom\, to touring with the likes of John Mellencamp and the Cranberries\, Griffin House opened for Toad the Wet Sprocket at The Ark and continues to gain national recognition—and to go deeper with his songwriting.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Greek Manuscripts at the University of Michigan Library: A Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Splendors of the religious and artistic endeavors of Byzantine manuscript makers are on display in this exhibit of highlights from the Greek manuscript collection at the University of Michigan Library Special Collections Research Center. The collection — 110 codices (bound manuscripts) and fragments written in Greek from the fourth to the nineteenth centuries C.E. — is the largest such collection in the Western Hemisphere and provides unique insights into this era of achievement in textual transmission\, calligraphy\, illumination\, and bookbinding. The exhibit will be open during Audubon Room hours.\n\nA digital version of the exhibit will be available in the Audubon Room and online\, and allows visitors to explore other pages of the manuscripts on display and other manuscripts from the collection.\n\nThis exhibit celebrates two recent publications based on the collection: \n\n* Catalogue of Greek Manuscripts at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. Vol. 1.\, by Nadezhda Kavrus-Hoffmann (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press\, 2021)\n\n* Tradition and Individuality: Bindings from the University of Michigan Greek Manuscript Collection\, by Julia Miller (Ann Arbor: The Legacy Press\, 2021)

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Pan-African Pulp: A Commission by Meleko Mokgosi
DESCRIPTION:In Pan-African Pulp\, Botswana-born artist Meleko Mokgosi explores the history of Pan-Africanism\, the global movement to unite ethnic groups of sub-Saharan African descent. His Vertical Gallery installation\, which inaugurates a new biennial commission program at UMMA\, features large-scale panels inspired by African photo novels of the 1960s and ’70s\, a mural examining the complexity of blackness\, posters from Pan-African movements from around the world\, including those founded in Detroit and Africa in the 1960s\, and stories from Setswana literature. Pan-African Pulp vividly connects to Detroit’s deep history of activism\, where organizations such as Black Nation of Islam\, The Republic of New Afrika\, Shrine of the Black Madonna (Black Christian Nationalism)\, Pan-African Congress\, and United Negro Improvement Association were founded. The renewed urgency for diversity and civil rights in Detroit\, and the country as a whole\, heightens the relevance of Mokgosi’s project and reveals the deep connections between these historical movements and those developing today.\n\nLead support is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan African Studies Center and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.
SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interventions for Patients with Complex Medical and Social Needs: Staffing Models and Open Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nHealthcare spending in the United States is disproportionately skewed: Just 5% of the population accounts for one-half of annual spending\, while 1% accounts for almost a quarter of annual spending. Many patients among these highest cost segments have multiple chronic conditions -- also known as multimorbidity -- as well as unmet social needs. Complex care interventions are one strategy for addressing the challenges facing such patients. A complex care intervention refers to a concerted effort\, often by a multidisciplinary team consisting of nurses\, community health workers and social workers\, to help improve the health and wellbeing of such patients. Care teams strive to improve health outcomes by working closely with each of their patients\, visiting them on a regular basis\, reconciling medications\, arranging primary and specialty care visits\, and addressing social needs such as housing instability\, rehabilitation from substance abuse\, unemployment etc.\n\nWhile such interventions have been adopted by a range of organizations including payers\, primary care providers\, and hospitals\, operational questions that are vital to successful interventions have not yet been investigated. In this talk\, we describe a complex care intervention developed by the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers (CCHP)\, an organization with significant experience\, rich data and national renown. Using a granular dataset involving longitudinal patient-care team encounters\, we quantify key features of intervention progression and how they vary among patients. We then describe an algorithm that samples patient-care team encounter histories to estimate staffing levels for a multidisciplinary care team. Finally\, we survey other themes and open challenges in multimorbidity research.\n\nBio: \nDr. Hari Balasubramanian is an Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts\, Amherst. He received his doctoral degree at Arizona State University in 2006. After graduation\, Dr. Balasubramanian spent two years as a Research Associate at Mayo Clinic in Rochester\, Minnesota before joining the University of Massachusetts in 2008. His research interests are in operations research applied to healthcare. Specific applications have included capacity planning and scheduling in outpatient\, inpatient and emergency room settings. Dr. Balasubramanian received a National Science Foundation CAREER award (2013-2019) focused on improving primary care delivery. His papers have been published in both operations research as well as clinical journals. His recent work is on detecting population level patterns in the prevalence of multiple chronic conditions.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Black Opry Revue
DESCRIPTION:Black Opry is a home for Black artists and Black fans of country\, blues\, folk\, and Americana music. Country music has been made by and loved by Black people since its conception. For just as long\, Black artists have been overlooked and disregarded in the genre by fans and executives. Black Opry wants to change that. This show invites you to discover\, support\, and enjoy the Black artists that make magic in this space. One of the most valuable aspects of country music is its versatility and diversity in sound. Country\, blues\, folk\, and Americana music often overlap or weave together—these artists explore all of those sounds and intersections. Featuring singers and songwriters in the round\, the Black Opry Revue showcases the diversity in sound and stories that Black artists offer to a genre that has often ignored them. Lineup for this show: Aaron Vance\, Tylar Bryant\, Julie Williams\, Nikko Morgan\, and Sug Daniels.\n---\nProof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. SUMMARY:Other:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Manifestation of Spin-Orbit and Electron-Nuclear Couplings in Computational Molecular Spectroscopy
DESCRIPTION:The computational modeling of molecular spectroscopies requires an accurate treatment of spin-orbit and electron-nuclear couplings to fully understand the physical underpinnings of the spectroscopic signatures. In this talk\, I will briefly review recent developments in relativistic electronic structure theory and electron-nuclear quantum dynamics from the Li research group\, followed by computational studies of several advanced molecular spectroscopies and challenging chemical processes. L- and M-edge X-ray absorption\, where large spin-orbit coupling splits the core p/d orbitals into several sublevels\, can now be computed with relativistic electronic structure methods developed in the Li research group. These new methods can provide extremely important insights into chemical processes involving transition metal\, rare earth\, and heavy elements. In order to study the effect of quantum proton\, we have developed the nuclear-electronic orbital Ehrenfest (NEO-Ehrenfest) dynamics\, in collaboration with the Hammes-Schiffer group. NEO-Ehrenfest provides an elegant framework for treating electrons and selected nuclei\, typically protons\, quantum mechanically in nonequilibrium dynamical processes\, such as the excited state intramolecular proton transfer process. Our simulations reveal that nuclear quantum effects influence the predictions of proton transfer reaction rates and kinetic isotope effects due to the intrinsic delocalized nature of the quantum nuclear wave function.\nXiaosong Li (University of Washington)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Becoming Campus Abolitionists
DESCRIPTION:Activists\, community organizers\, and policymakers have attempted police reform for more than a century. Whether diversifying departments\, conducting racial bias training\, or implementing community policing\, no reform effort has stopped police from harming the public it has pledged to \"protect and serve.\" While these concerns are largely understood outside of higher education\, a closer look at the role colleges and universities play in expanding the carceral state reveal a deep\, long-standing relationship with the institution of policing.\n\nOn May 5\, join Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III and Derecka Purnell in conversation as they discuss the policing problem and explore possibilities for police-free futures\, on campus and beyond.\n\nDr. Charles H.F.
Please verify hours on the library's website: https://www.lib.umich.edu

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:MORE Faculty Virtual Workshop: Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start
DESCRIPTION:This workshop helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles\, and consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then\, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs\, goals\, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.\nOptional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.\nRegistration is required at https://myumi.ch/n8yRV.\nSeparate registration for students is available at https://myumi.ch/e6gNZ.\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

The series brings together a diverse group of changemakers\, including national and local policymakers\, journalists\, researchers\, and community leaders\, to (1) meditate on the past and current racial dynamics of COVID-19 in Michigan and Detroit\, and to (2) discuss the policies\, programs\, and practices that have successfully responded to the needs of communities of color disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.\n\nThe first event was April 1\, and the series will end with an event on June 10.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Portraits and Patrons: The Women of the Villa of the Mysteries in Their Social Context
DESCRIPTION:The identity of the people in the fresco from Room 5 of the Villa of the Mysteries has remained a mystery to us. Are they images of people who really lived? Are they generic? Does the figure of the matron depict the owner of the villa? Join Kelsey Museum curator emerita Elaine Gazda as she discusses her recently published analysis of these figures and the role of the fresco itself as a memorial and heirloom. \n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.\n\nJoin us via Zoom at:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95262537929\nMeeting ID: 952 6253 7929\nPasscode: Kelsey

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Preference Intensity: Some Implications for American Politics
DESCRIPTION:Talk Abstract: Political scientists have long been interested in understanding the intensity of voter preferences\, but this endeavor has rarely been incorporated into the study of representation and disagreements over measurement remain. I measure intensity of preferences using a simple extension of conjoint analysis. I provide some evidence of the face validity of this measurement approach. This strategy requires large samples\, so I use the approximately 500\,000 cases from Nationscape. I show that simple survey marginals do not show large biases when it comes to the balance of intensity in the general population. However there are large differences in intensity across issues. Conservatives care much more about the issues on which they hold conservative views\, and liberals care much more about the issues on which they hold liberal views. This may amplify polarization and affect the outcomes of primary elections. People with moderate views care more about the issues on which their views match the reigning consensus. This contradicts work that argues that moderate views are less deeply held\, and supports the argument that moderate stances are beneficial in general elections.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Navigating Disability in 19th-Century America
DESCRIPTION:The four display cases in this exhibit were curated by members of a combined undergraduate and graduate course on disability history and literature at the University of Michigan to convey what it was like to be disabled in the United States before the modern category of “disability” existed. Together\, the artifacts gathered from the Clements Library collections provide a glimpse of the cruelties\, triumphs\, and intimate acts of care that shaped the lives of people with disabilities in the past. \n \nThe Clements Library is offering Open Hours Monday through Friday\, from 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm. To attend a behind the scenes guided tour of the Library and the exhibit\, please see the schedule at myumi.ch/Aw9Zb.\n \nCurated By: Dr. Ittai Orr and the Students of English 420\, Winter 2022\, with Maggie Vanderford and Julie Fremuth at the Clements Library.
