SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Other:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Manifestation of Spin-Orbit and Electron-Nuclear Couplings in Computational Molecular Spectroscopy
DESCRIPTION:The computational modeling of molecular spectroscopies requires an accurate treatment of spin-orbit and electron-nuclear couplings to fully understand the physical underpinnings of the spectroscopic signatures. In this talk\, I will briefly review recent developments in relativistic electronic structure theory and electron-nuclear quantum dynamics from the Li research group\, followed by computational studies of several advanced molecular spectroscopies and challenging chemical processes. L- and M-edge X-ray absorption\, where large spin-orbit coupling splits the core p/d orbitals into several sublevels\, can now be computed with relativistic electronic structure methods developed in the Li research group. These new methods can provide extremely important insights into chemical processes involving transition metal\, rare earth\, and heavy elements. In order to study the effect of quantum proton\, we have developed the nuclear-electronic orbital Ehrenfest (NEO-Ehrenfest) dynamics\, in collaboration with the Hammes-Schiffer group. NEO-Ehrenfest provides an elegant framework for treating electrons and selected nuclei\, typically protons\, quantum mechanically in nonequilibrium dynamical processes\, such as the excited state intramolecular proton transfer process. Our simulations reveal that nuclear quantum effects influence the predictions of proton transfer reaction rates and kinetic isotope effects due to the intrinsic delocalized nature of the quantum nuclear wave function.\nXiaosong Li (University of Washington)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC/CM Seminar | Manifestation of Spin-Orbit and Electron-Nuclear Couplings in Computational Molecular Spectroscopy
Our simulations reveal that nuclear quantum effects influence the predictions of proton transfer reaction rates and kinetic isotope effects due to the intrinsic delocalized nature of the quantum nuclear wave function.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Becoming Campus Abolitionists
DESCRIPTION:Activists\, community organizers\, and policymakers have attempted police reform for more than a century. Whether diversifying departments\, conducting racial bias training\, or implementing community policing\, no reform effort has stopped police from harming the public it has pledged to \"protect and serve.\" While these concerns are largely understood outside of higher education\, a closer look at the role colleges and universities play in expanding the carceral state reveal a deep\, long-standing relationship with the institution of policing.\n\nOn May 5\, join Dr. Charles H.F. Davis III and Derecka Purnell in conversation as they discuss the policing problem and explore possibilities for police-free futures\, on campus and beyond.\n\nDr. Charles H.F. Davis III\, 2022 Anti-Racism Collaborative Research & Community Impact Fellow\, Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Director of the Campus Abolition Research Lab at the University of Michigan\n\nDerecka Purnell\, Lawyer\, Organizer\, and Author of Becoming Abolitionists: Police\, Protests\, and the Pursuit of Freedom\n\n\nThis session is co-sponsored by the Campus Abolition Research Lab (CARL)\; the Anti-Racism Collaborative\, a strategic space at the University of Michigan for engagement around anti-racism research and scholarship and part of the provost's anti-racism initiative\; and the Diversity Scholars Network\, a scholarly community committed to advancing understandings of historical and contemporary social issues related to identity\, difference\, culture\, representation\, power\, oppression\, and inequality.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk | Portraits and Patrons: The Women of the Villa of the Mysteries in Their Social Context
DESCRIPTION:The identity of the people in the fresco from Room 5 of the Villa of the Mysteries has remained a mystery to us. Are they images of people who really lived? Are they generic? Does the figure of the matron depict the owner of the villa? Join Kelsey Museum curator emerita Elaine Gazda as she discusses her recently published analysis of these figures and the role of the fresco itself as a memorial and heirloom. \n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.\n\nJoin us via Zoom at:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95262537929\nMeeting ID: 952 6253 7929\nPasscode: Kelsey

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Preference Intensity: Some Implications for American Politics
DESCRIPTION:Talk Abstract: Political scientists have long been interested in understanding the intensity of voter preferences\, but this endeavor has rarely been incorporated into the study of representation and disagreements over measurement remain. I measure intensity of preferences using a simple extension of conjoint analysis. I provide some evidence of the face validity of this measurement approach. This strategy requires large samples\, so I use the approximately 500\,000 cases from Nationscape. I show that simple survey marginals do not show large biases when it comes to the balance of intensity in the general population. However there are large differences in intensity across issues. Conservatives care much more about the issues on which they hold conservative views\, and liberals care much more about the issues on which they hold liberal views. This may amplify polarization and affect the outcomes of primary elections. People with moderate views care more about the issues on which their views match the reigning consensus. This contradicts work that argues that moderate views are less deeply held\, and supports the argument that moderate stances are beneficial in general elections.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Contributions to nonparametric quantile analysis and quantile-based mediation analysis\, with applications to lifecourse analysis in human biology
DESCRIPTION:This thesis develops and assesses new ways to study the conditional quantiles of a population using a sample of data that represents the population. All methods presented here build on a recently-proposed non-parametric approach to quantile regression that is analogous to local linear regression in the least-squares setting. A major challenge is that the raw local quantile estimates are cumbersome to interpret and gain insight from directly. Aiming to overcome this challenge\, there are four main contributions herein. First\, we demonstrate how a low-rank additive regression analysis can produce insight into a collection of local nonparametric quantile estimates. The low rank structure regularizes the noisy quantile estimates and facilitates interpretation of the findings. Second\, we show how a multivariate dimension reduction approach provides a different type of insight into a collection of estimated conditional quantile functions. The third contribution of the thesis leverages the combination of nonparametric quantile estimation and low-rank regression in the context of mediation analysis. We show that this produces a novel quantile-based approach to mediation analysis that expresses direct and indirect effects in a concise and interpretable way. The final methodological contribution of the thesis is a framework for moment-based estimation of conditional covariance functions for stochastic processes. Throughout the thesis\, we motivate our work through analyses looking at the proximal and distal factors predicting human blood pressure.

SUMMARY:Presentation:A Multicellular\, Biomaterial-based Platform for the Engineering of Vascularized Bone
DESCRIPTION:Cell-based tissue engineering offers the potential to greatly improve the treatment of large and complex bone defects by addressing the main shortcomings associated with current bone grafting procedures. A main challenge is the ischemic environment that can result from traumatic bone injury\, resulting in the death of transplanted cells and tissue constructs. Achieving an adequate vascular supply is a critical barrier preventing the translational success of cell-based regeneration approaches. Therefore\, a variety of strategies have been developed to prevascularize engineered tissue constructs prior to transplantation. Adult mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) and endothelial cells (EC) are key players in native orthopaedic tissue regeneration and vascularization\, and represent promising cell types for tissue engineering strategies to create vascularized bone. However\, to effectively harness the regenerative potential of MSC\, the appropriate phenotype must be achieved before implantation. A main challenge in engineering vascularized bone tissue is creating an appropriate culture environment to support multiple cell phenotypes. Therefore\, this work focuses on designing a cell-based\, biomaterial-enabled strategy that provides spatiotemporal control of key microenvironmental cues to support the co-development of osseous and vascular tissues\, with the end goal of generating vascularized\, bone-forming constructs.\n\nFirst\, this thesis explores how temporal control of the culture environment can be used to maintain preformed vessels and subsequent osteogenic development in engineered tissue constructs. To mimic the sequential process of native bone development\, in which vascularization precedes tissue ossification\, we generated cell-laden hydrogel constructs cultured in vasculogenic growth medium to induce vessel development\, and subsequently supplemented the medium with osteoinductive components to promote osteogenic differentiation. Our results revealed conflicting effects of the two culture environments\, in which osteoinductive factors compromised cellular viability and MSC pericyte-like function\, leading to ~93% regression of preformed vessels. Further\, vasculogenic culture conditions inhibited MSC-mediated matrix mineralization as evidenced by impaired calcium deposition.\n\nNext\, this thesis describes the development and characterization of a modular biomaterial approach that provides control of discrete environmental properties designed to promote vasculogenic and osteogenic tissue development. Separate populations of cell-laden microtissues were fabricated and independently cultured under specific differentiation conditions to support either osteogenic or pericyte-like lineage commitment of MSC. This approach enabled the formation of primitive osteogenic microtissues exhibiting mineralization of the extracellular matrix\, and vascular microtissues with demonstrated EC sprouting potential. The combination of microtissues led to the generation of a multiphase construct that supported extensive vessel development. While osteogenic activity was maintained without exogenous osteoinductive factors\, the vasculogenic culture environment was not conducive for sustained mineralization.\n\nLastly\, this thesis describes a novel approach incorporating the modular biomaterial platform with a biomimetic induction process emulating the native endochondral ossification (EO) pathway to better couple vascular and osteogenic tissue development. Chondrogenically-primed MSC were matured to hypertrophy to form hypertrophic pellets resembling EO\, as evidenced by MMP-mediated remodeling and mineralization of the formed cartilaginous matrix. Hypertrophic induction of MSC was associated with secretion of distinct angiogenic factors which stimulated EC vasculogenesis. When combined with vasculogenic microtissues\, hypertrophic pellets supported robust vessel development and cell-mediated mineralization without exogenous vasculogenic medium or osteoinductive components.\n\nOverall\, this dissertation presents an attractive strategy for generating vascularized bone-like tissue. By integrating the modular biomaterial platform with an EO-based induction process\, we successfully leveraged physiologic cues of hypertrophic MSC to achieve concomitant vasculogenic and osteogenic development.\n\nDate: Monday\, May 9\, 2022\nTime: 11:00 AM\nLocation: 1130 LBME and Zoom (https://umich.zoom.us/j/96133803682 Passcode: bones)\nChair: Dr. Jan Stegemann

SUMMARY:Other:Dissertation Defense: Andrew McInnerney
DESCRIPTION:Linguistics PhD candidate Andrew McInnerney will defend his dissertation on Monday\, May 9\, at 11:30 am. The title of his dissertation is “The Argument/Adjunct Distinction and the Structure of Prepositional Phrases.” Doctoral committee members include Professor Acrisio Pires (Chair)\, Professor Ezra Keshet\, Dr. Lisa Levinson\, Professor Richard L. Lewis\, and Professor T. Daniel Seely\, Eastern Michigan University. All are invited to attend.\n\nABSTRACT\nThis dissertation examines the traditional evidence for the Argument/Adjunct Distinction (A/AD). I begin by drawing a distinction between the semantic sense of the A/AD and the syntactic sense of the A/AD. The semantic A/AD concerns lexical encoding of thematic information\; arguments are taken to be semantically encoded in the lexical representation of predicates\, while adjuncts are not. I argue instead that lexical encoding of thematic information is a property in its own right\; the standard evidence does motivate an understanding of the A/AD in these terms. The syntactic A/AD has to do with the external syntax of constituents. I consider nine canonical syntactic diagnostics for argumenthood (e.g. omissibility\, VP-anaphora\, islandhood\, etc.)\, using prepositional phrases in the verbal domain in English as a test case\, and I find that these diagnostics do not provide good evidence for the syntactic A/AD. Instead\, the properties identified by the canonical argumenthood diagnostics are independent of one another\; they should not be taken to as properties of a single larger distinction. \n	After carefully examining the evidence for the A/AD\, I consider the consequences of eliminating the distinction. I focus specifically on consequences for the syntax prepositional phrases\, including (i) the configuration of PPs in the verbal domain\, (ii) licensing of pronouns within PPs\, and (iii) pseudopassives (p-passives). The A/AD has been argued to play an important role in each of these domains\, and so if the distinction is to be eliminated\, it is important to explore how analyses in these domains are affected. On the structure of VP-internal PPs\, I explore the possibility that PPs could be attached as sisters to functional heads in the verbal domain\, potentially forming multiple n-ary-branching layers. On pronoun-licensing in PP\, I defend the hypothesis that PP is split into two layers\, and I argue that the lower of the two layers is a phase\; assuming that Condition B is sensitive to phase domains\, this enables an account of a range of relevant data. Finally\, on p-passives\, I consider the conditions under which p-passivization is blocked\, arguing that argumenthood is not a relevant factor.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Against Risk-Aversion”- E-WIP/MMP Talk
DESCRIPTION:Title: \"Against Risk-Aversion”\nAbstract: It is widely thought that some degree of risk-aversion is rationally and ethically permissible. For example\, in a choice between saving one person for sure and taking a ¼ chance of saving five people... many believe that we can be permitted to favor the guaranteed rescue over the risky gamble—even though the gamble saves more expected lives. If you attend this talk\, you'll hear my best efforts to argue against this consensus. Specifically\, it will be argued that non-maximizing risk-aversion conflicts with a conjunction of two attractive principles. The first principle asserts that\, if you're comparing two options\, and one of them gives a particular person a greater chance of rescue and affects nothing else\, then you are required to favor that option. The second principle asserts that if you are required to choose X when the available options are X\, Y\, and some other alternatives... then you must still be required to choose X when the available options are only X and Y. Finally\, it will be discussed how this argument differs from existing arguments against risk-aversion\, which traditionally appeal to the fact that the risk-averse agent is likely to lose out in the long run. The argument we'll explore does not rely upon this observation and can be presented in the context of a single decision.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RNA Innovation Seminar: \"Unexpected determinants of neuronal identity and properties: the curious cases of PTBP1\, PTBP2\, and neuronal splicing\"
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Seminar via Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_dltbxWdHQ5KrC3rTl4hqLQ\n\nTalk title: “Unexpected determinants of neuronal identity and properties: the curious cases of PTBP1\, PTBP2\, and neuronal splicing\"\n\nAbstract: Alternative splicing is the major contributor to transcriptome diversity\, but splicing is noisy and to what extend alternative splicing regulation is indispensable for biolgical processes has been controversial. Our studies have revealed the regulation and function of neural-specific splicing in shaping neuronal identity and estalishing neurons’ two unique attributes: 1. Axonogenesis (Only neurons but no other cell types have one and single axon)\; 2. Neuronal longevity (Neurons are the most long-lived cell types). We show that obtaining these neuronal features is coordinated by RNA binding proteins PTBP1 and PTBP2\, while PTBP1 was suggested by others to be a reprogramming factor of neuronal fate. I will discuss the regulatory mechanism of neural specific splicing underlying neurogensis and maturation.\n\nReferences:\nZhang M\, Ergin V\, Lin L\, Stork C\, Chen L\, Zheng S. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours. SUMMARY:Presentation:Autonomous Vehicle Impacts on Travel-Based Activity & Activity-Based Travel
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Dr. Chandra Bhat\, University Distinguished Teaching Professor and Joe J. King Endowed Chair Professor at the University of Texas at Austin\, to the Distinguished Lecture Series! For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic\, we will be offering hybrid attendance options.\n\nThis presentation undertakes a deep-dive into the kinds of activities that individuals are likely to pursue when freed from the task of driving in the future transportation landscape of fully automated vehicles (AVs). Dr. Bhat's study indicates that “productive use of time” is not necessarily always tied with activities\, such as work and study\; rather\, being able to partake in relatively “chill” activities (such as sleeping\, relaxing\, and gazing out the window) is also considered as good use of time. This suggests caution in the interpretation of what are traditionally referred to as “productive” activities\, and also\, a need for scholarly restraint in the use of the label “multi-tasking” to exclusively refer to non-passive activities.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Statistical Estimation and Inference for Large-Scale Categorical Data
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nCategorical data become increasingly ubiquitous in the modern big data era. In this dissertation\, we propose novel statistical learning and inference methods on large-scale categorical data\, with a special focus on latent variable models and their applications to psychometrics. In psychometric assessments\, the subjects' underlying aptitude often cannot be fully captured by raw scores due to differing item difficulties. Latent variable models are popularly used to capture this unobserved proficiency. This dissertation studies two types of latent variable models with categorical responses. The first type assumes multiple discrete latent traits\, commonly known as the cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs)\, is a special family of discrete latent variable models. The second type assumes a continuous latent score\, commonly known as the item response theory (IRT) models. Although both have been widely applied in large-scale assessments with diagnostic purposes\, many challenges still exist for efficient learning and statistical inference. This dissertation studies four important problems that arise in these contexts.\n\nThe first part develops novel algorithms to estimate large latent Q-matrix in CDMs. Q-matrix plays an important role in CDMs\; it specifies the inter-dependence between items and subjects' latent attributes. Accurate knowledge of Q-matrix is critical for cognitive diagnosis\, item categorization and assessment design. However\, in practice\, many assessments do not provide Q-matrix or do not have accurate Q-matrix specifications. Existing methods are not scalable with the size of Q-matrix\, despite the prevalence of large Q-matrix. We propose a penalized likelihood approach\, with computational complexity growing linearly with Q sizes\, to learn large Q-matrix from observational data. The estimation consistency and the robustness of the proposed method across various CDMs are also established.\n\nThe second part develops learning and inference methods for a unidimensional IRT model\, the Rasch model\, under the missing data setting. Data missingness is prevalent in large-scale assessments\; examples include SAT and GRE where responses are combined from multiple tests administered year round from a large item pool. Direct inference to compare subjects’ latent scores under the missing data setting remains open and challenging in the literature. In this part\, we obtain point estimators for the latent scores and derive their asymptotic distribution under a flexible missing-entry design in double asymptotic settings. We show our estimator is statistically efficient and optimal\, which is amongst the first results in the binary matrix completion literature.\n\nThe third part concerns measurement biases in IRT models. Novel estimation and inference procedures are developed for biases brought by measurement non-invariant items under the differential item functioning (DIF) framework. Existing methods either require to know anchor items\, i.e. DIF-free items or to adopt regularization to ensure model identifiability where easy inference is not permitted. We propose a novel minimal L1 condition for simultaneous DIF detection and model identification. It does not require any knowledge on anchor items and permits easy inference for both binary and multiple groups settings.\n\nThe fourth part considers privacy issues for releasing tabular (categorical) data to the public. We recommend an optimal mechanism\, in which data utility is maximized given a privacy constraint\, under the data differential privacy (DP) framework. Common users' practices\, including merging related cells or integrating multiple data sources\, are considered. Valid inference procedures are developed for the associated DP privacy-protected data.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"How To Figure Out What We Actually Know About Communicating Health Numbers: The Methodological Journey (and Some Results) of the Making Numbers Meaningful Project\"
DESCRIPTION:Numbers are an essential part of many health communications and medical decision making situations. Yet\, it is often unclear how best to communicate numbers to patients or the public to achieve different goals. Although there is a large and ever growing literature testing different types of risk and health number communications\, both methodological and conceptual differences have made it difficult to summarize the findings from past work. In this seminar\, Jessica Ancker (Vanderbilt U.) and Brian Zikmund-Fisher (U. Michigan) will provide an overview and some preliminary findings from their National Library of Medicine-funded R01 award that is systematically reviewing over 400 papers to create evidence-based guidance for health number communication. Drs. Ancker and Zikmund-Fisher will present the conceptual taxonomies from their recently published paper (Risk Analysis\, 2022) and discuss how separately considering the specific goals\, formats\, and structures of health data communications\, and the cognitive tasks required of the reader\, can lead to clearer insights from the literature. They will then provide an overview of their innovative review methodology\, share some of the insights learned from the review so far\, and present a preliminary version of the web-based tool that will soon enable health communicators to find the evidence that most pertains to the number communications that they are designing.
