SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware
DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. Bon Appetit!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. SUMMARY:Exhibition:the small details
DESCRIPTION:Artists Amy Sacksteder and Brenda Singletary are both visual storytellers\, exploring their relationships to place and time through the contemplation of objects and raw materials within the context and the process of painting. Although disparate in their methods and aesthetic choices\, there is a surprising connection in their deep commitment to the particulars\, in all the small details more than “the big picture”…the idiosyncrasies and incidentals that give meaning\, resonance\, and renewal to their own visual languages\, and artistic practices ongoing. Visit our website to learn more: https://lsa.umich.edu/humanities/gallery/current-exhibitions/the-small-details.html.\n\n*the small details* was made possible by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities Gallery High Stakes Art Initiative. This two-person exhibition opportunity intends to offer support and further exposure specifically for regional contemporary artists.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Yelping From Home: The Tech Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk: Human Code— My Journey from Engineering to Manager\n\nThe path of becoming an engineering manager isn’t always straightforwardor easy. Engineering requires a prescribed mindset and skills that don’t necessarily translate to managing people. In this talk\, Jeff shares hisstory of becoming a manager along with the lessons he’s learned and practical tips for making the transition.\n\nSpeaker: Jeff Carnegie \nJeff has been an engineering manager in the Restaurants group at Yelp for two years. Before Yelp\, he worked at companies like PayPal and Vevo along with anumber of other consumer-facing technology startups. He loves the challenge of taking a product concept and turning it into a product millions of people love to use. Even more\, he loves working with talented people and helping them reach their potential. Jeff lives in Bend\, OR with his wife and daughter and loves to take advantage of all of the outdoor activities it has to offer.\n\nModerator: Kelly Greenia \nKelly is a Lead Technical Recruiter and has been at Yelp for six years. She loves getting to share herexperiences at Yelp with candidates\, work with extraordinarily friendly people\, and work on recruiting projects. She recently moved to Santa Cruz\, CA with her husband\, their pet bearded dragon\, and her ever growing collection of plants. \n\n\nAbout Yelping From Home:\nYelp’s mission is to connect people with great local businesses\, and two of the teams working behind the scenes to make that happen are our five star engineering andproduct teams.\nPlaying an active role in our community is a value that we have strongly prioritized over the years. Typically we would invite you to come to Yelp’s HQ to network\, grab a slice of ‘za\, and learn about the technology and culture behind Yelp. With stay-at-home orders across the globe\, Yelp (like many of you) has had no choice but to adapt to these changes. We understand that this is a strange and challenging time for many\, so we’d like to invite you to join us as we navigate this new normal for the tech community together.\nTo stay connected\, create space for folks to collaborate and share some of the things Yelp has been working on\, we are launching our very own virtual tech talk series. This series of talks will feature Yelp employees from engineering and product share theirstories about career development\, technical skills and workplace challenges in a well-distributed environment.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Methods of Survey Sampling - Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Methods of Survey Sampling\n\nOpen for registration!\n\nJune 6 - July 29\, 2022\n10:00am-12:30pm EST\nT/Th\n\nA fundamental feature of many sample surveys is a probability sample of subjects. Probability sampling requires rigorous application of mathematical principles to the selection process. Methods of Survey Sampling is a moderately advanced course in applied statistics\, with an emphasis on the practical problems of sample design\, which provides students with an understanding of principles and practice in skills required to select subjects and analyze sample data. Topics covered include stratified\, clustered\, systematic\, and multi-stage sample designs\, unequal probabilities and probabilities proportional to size\, area probability sampling\, ratio means\, sampling errors\, frame problems\, cost factors\, and practical designs and procedures. Emphasis is on practical considerations rather than on theoretical derivations\, although understanding of principles requires review of statistical results for sample surveys. The course includes an exercise that integrates the different techniques into a comprehensive sample design.\n\nWhy take this course? \n- To understand the basic ideas\, concepts and principles of probability sampling from an applied perspective\n- To be able to identify and appropriately apply sampling techniques to survey design problems\n- To be able to compute the sample size for a variety of sample designs\n- To understand and be able to assess the impact of the sample design on survey estimates\n- To learn how to design and select a probability sample involving complex sampling techniques in a survey project\, and receive expert feedback on a sampling report\n\nCourse Hours: 3\n\nInstructors: Raphael Nishimura\, Sunghee Lee\n\nPrerequisite: Two graduate-level courses in statistical methods.\n\nAll 2022 courses will be offered in an alternative remote format.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Physics Graduate Summer Symposium (PGSS) | Linear Maximum Distance Separable Coded Matrix Inversion
DESCRIPTION:A cumbersome operation in physics\, numerical analysis and linear algebra\, optimization\, and machine learning\, is inverting large full-rank matrices. In this paper\, we propose a coded computing approach for recovering matrix inverse approximations. We first present an approximate matrix inversion algorithm that does not require a matrix factorization but uses a black-box least squares optimization solver as a subroutine to give an estimate of the inverse of real full-rank matrices. We then present a distributed framework for which our algorithm can be implemented and show how we can leverage from sparsest-balanced MDS generator matrices to devise inverse coded computing schemes. We focus on balanced Reed-Solomon codes\, which are optimal in terms of computational load\; and communication from the workers to the master server. We also discuss how our algorithms can be used to compute the pseudoinverse of a full-rank matrix and how the communication can be secured from eavesdroppers.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Discovery and Development of Agonist Antibodies for T Cell Receptors
DESCRIPTION:Agonist antibodies that activate co-stimulatory immune receptors\, such as the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptors OX40 and CD137\, are an important class of emerging therapeutics due to their ability to regulate immune cell activity. Despite their promise\, there are no approved agonist antibodies for treating cancer as demonstrated by previous unsuccessful clinical trials. Although multiple factors are responsible for poor clinical efficacy\, one major bottleneck is the reliance on FcγR-mediated crosslinking for sufficient receptor activation. This is inherently problematic because FcγR expression varies greatly on different immune cells\, leading to a wide range of receptor agonism. Emerging research suggests that antibodies engaging two different epitopes on the same immune receptor mediate receptor superclustering and enable robust antibody agonism without extrinsic Fc crosslinking. However\, there are no systematic methods for identifying such biepitopic (also known as biparatopic) agonist antibodies. Therefore\, the objective of this research work is to develop facile methods for reliably identifying biepitopic antibodies to activate immune receptors for immunotherapeutic applications.\n\nBiepitopic antibodies have been shown to mediate potent receptor activation for a variety of immune receptors. Traditionally\, the generation of these antibodies requires key steps including animal immunization\, epitope binning to identify unique antibody pairs\, and combining antibody pairs to engineer biepitopic antibodies. While this approach has been used to successfully discover biepitopic antibodies\, it suffers from key limitations. Notably\, animal immunization and subsequent antibody isolation is an arduous and unpredictable process. Even when successful clones are discovered from these processes\, further epitope binning experiments are needed to select antibody pairs to discover potent immune therapeutics. To overcome these limitations\, we developed an antibody screening strategy that greatly simplifies the discovery of biepitopic antibodies. Our approach eliminates the need for animal immunization by using existing\, off-the-shelf IgG antibodies specific to the target receptor. Next\, we perform in vitro selections by blocking the receptor epitope of the existing antibody and conducting subsequent sorts to identify single-chain antibodies with orthogonal binding domains. Thus far\, our work has shown that the antibody screening strategy can be used to discover antibodies for a variety of TNF receptors including OX40 and CD137.\n\nGiven that receptor clustering of three or more receptors is critical for activating TNF receptors\, we first generated biepitopic tetravalent OX40 antibodies by attaching novel single-chain antibodies to the C-termini of the light chain of existing clinical-stage antibodies. These tetravalent biepitopic antibodies showed remarkable T cell proliferation and cytokine secretion for biepitopic antibodies compared to their monoepitopic counterparts. Next\, we sought to improve the additional clinical-stage OX40 IgGs engineered as biepitopic antibodies to show the generality of our findings that biepitopic antibodies can mediate superior and FcγR-independent activities. Beyond OX40 IgGs\, we also show that biepitopic antibodies can be used to mediate superior T cell proliferation for other TNF receptors including CD137. Looking forward\, we anticipate that these research advancements will accelerate the discovery and development of the next generation of immune therapeutics.\n\nDate: Friday\, July 29\, 2022\nTime: 10:00 AM\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/5163583658\nCo-Chairs: Professors Peter Tessier and Lonnie Shea

SUMMARY:Performance:Mike Gentry & Chickenwire Canoe // Mike Vial
DESCRIPTION:Michigan songwriter Mike Vial writes songs about love and life's transitions\, and his vocal style shows the influence of James Taylor and Ari Hest. But his accomplished guitar playing has a voice of its own\, mixing elements of jazz\, folk\, and rock. Out on the road once more\, Mike is taking Mike Gentry along for the ride. Mike started out playing guitar at Dexter High School\, worked for years at A&M in Los Angeles\, and came home to Michigan. He's appeared at Plymouth Coffee Bean\, Black Fire Winery\, Crazy Wisdom Bookstore and Tea Room\, Dearborn Brewing\, and many other venues. \"I pitched to him the idea to tour together this summer like old folk artists did in the 60s!\" Vial says. The Mikes will complete a tour of one-night stands with suitcases and guitars in hand\, with Mike performing with his band\, Chickenwire Canoe\, and ending shows as a duo. Their musical partnership feels fated\, since Gentry produced Vial's ambitious album \"A World That's Bigger.\"\n---\nProof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Map ≠ Territory: Distortion and Power in Cartography
DESCRIPTION:More than strict representations of the world we inhabit\, maps are social constructions that embody the interests of their creators. Map ≠ Territory deconstructs maps that have been used to subjugate\, appropriate\, and oppress\, as well as the maps that counter that power through emancipation and advocacy. The exhibit critically engages with materials that span from the colonial era to modern-day Detroit.\n\nThe exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shared Humanity
DESCRIPTION:July 30 - August 31\, 2022\nMon-Fri from 8:30am-5pm and Sat-Sun 10am-2:30pm.\nGallery 100 at 100 Silver Maples Dr\, Chelsea\, MI 48118\nParking available near the main entrance. Please sign in and screen yourself in the entryway.\n\nAdditional Information: https://myumi.ch/Nmx2j\n\nBeginning Saturday\, July 30\, the exhibit Shared Humanity will be featured at Silver Maples in Chelsea from the Prison Creative Arts Project’s (PCAP) private collection. The artwork is for sale and will be on display in the 100 Gallery through August 31\, 2022.\n\nAccording to Sarah Unrath\, Curator and Arts Programming Coordinator of PCAP\, “the exhibition is designed to connect viewer to artist through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams\, memories\, goals\, pasts. We all process emotions of anger\, joy\, grief\, nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have dealt with complex realities of being human.”\n\nThe curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated\, and the team at Silver Maples\, to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists\, including Andy Wynkoop\, An ArtsyGuy\, RIK\, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson\, and many others.\n\n“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection\, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity\,” says Unrath\n\nThe 100 Gallery is open Mon-Fri are 8:30am-5pm and Sat-Sun 10am-2:30pm. \nAdmission is free and open to the public. \nSales will be conducted in person on Saturday\, August 6 with alternative phone sale appointments available: https://myumi.ch/DJ6M5\n\nSpecial Storytelling Event: Creating Art Inside\nSaturday\, Aug 6\, 2022 @ 2:00pm\nMaples Room at 100 Silver Maples Dr\, Chelsea\, MI 48118\n\nIn this hour\, we take a look into the lives of artists that created work in the most difficult of circumstances: prison. Hear first hand about their lived experiences and the impact art-making had on their time behind the walls. Hosted by the Prison Creative Arts Project. In-person art sales will be available before and after the event.

SUMMARY:Performance:Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards
DESCRIPTION:We've heard the dance-fiddle-and-song triple threat of Boston's Laura Cortese at The Ark before\, but each time she brings something new. Laura Cortese (who now lives in Belgium) and the Dance Cards have a vision for their band's sound: bold and elegant\, schooled in the lyrical rituals of folk music and backed by grooves that alternately inspire Cajun two-stepping and rock-n-roll hip swagger. Their new music has a wide emotional and sonic scope. The four voices are just as much instruments as they are providers for lyric and harmony. At times it's rowdy\, delicate\, or cinematic. The result is a sound that can start as a string band\, and morph into a string quartet\, female a cappella group\, or indie band\; all while staying honest and true to their identity as folk instrumentalists. Watching Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards on the main stage at a summer folk festival\, or tearing it up late night at a club\, you get the sense that they might snap some fiddle strings or punch a hole in the bass drum. They come to Michigan with a new album\, “Bitter Better.”\n---\nProof of COVID vaccination required for entry. By purchasing a ticket you agree that you and your guests will comply with all laws\, orders\, ordinances\, regulations and health and safety guidance adopted by the State of Michigan\, the County of Washtenaw and The Ark\, including any guidelines in place at the time of the show. Attendees who do not comply will be asked to leave. Policies will be updated as circumstances and requirements change in our community. Please review The Ark’s current COVID-related information before attending a show.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lane Hall Gallery Summer Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, artists Ashley Bigham (photographs) and Grace Mahoney (watercolors) investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine’s older generation of women embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous: the babusya. Seen in public transport\, in the market\, and on the street\, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say\, something to gossip about\, and something to complain about. \n\n\"Invisible Women: Portraits of Aging in Ukraine\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. The exhibit is on display for public viewing weekdays from 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. through August 18\, 2022\, in the main lobby of Lane Hall\, located at 204 South State Street\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109. SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Planning\, Control\, and Estimation for Diverse Multi-UAS Missions
DESCRIPTION:Light refreshments will be provided.\n\nChair: Ella Atkins\n\nAbstract:\nUnmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) are being used for a variety of single vehicle missions such as surveillance\, inspection\, and payload delivery. Teams of UAS can perform these same missions more efficiently and will pursue novel cooperative missions not possible with a single vehicle. However\, this comes at the cost of increased system complexity and introduces the challenge of safe team coordination. This motivates our research to pursue four diverse multi-UAS mission configurations. We propose novel methods to command and control teams of UAS with the majority supported with full-scale experimental validation.\n\nTo support all experiments conducted in this thesis\, an experimental test bed consisting of a custom\, open-source quadrotor\, flight controller\, and supporting infrastructure is developed with designs and code shared publicly. \n\nThis thesis offers four specific contributions to enable the deployment of UAS teams in missions with potential to benefit society. First\, an existing formation control method\, continuum deformation\, is experimentally validated with observed tracking errors and delays informing the theory. Required inter-vehicle separation constraints are defined and applied to the real system. A global minimum separation bound based on a local controller error bound is derived to guarantee safety during real-world flights.\n\nSecond\, a novel heads-up haptic pushing interface is developed that enables a user to move a heavy payload carried by multiple small UAS through a crowded cluttered environment. Real-time estimation of user applied force via an instrumented payload updates virtual dynamics of an admittance controller to guide the system. This capability will support resilient and safe package delivery to untrained consumers and can assist in delivering medical and survival supplies in disaster relief scenarios.\n\nThird\, computationally efficient planning methods are developed to support wildfire mapping over a large area by a team of UAS. A state machine is used to handle multi-vehicle task allocation between exploration (coverage) and exploitation (line following). Efficiency gains are achieved by separating the 3D problem into 2D lateral and 1D terrain avoidance sub-problems. \nThis work offers a first step towards mapping increasingly severe wildfire threats that cause significant damage and claim the lives of hundreds of people every year.\n\nFourth\, a generalized path planner is developed to manage a deformable small UAS formation capable of rotating\, expanding\, contracting\, and shearing. Provably sufficient inter-agent collision avoidance constraints are leveraged to efficiently plan safe trajectories in large-scale complex but static environments. An integrated guidance and control module onboard each small UAS tracks the designed trajectory while avoiding pop-up obstacles and vehicle failures by following an ideal fluid flow field airspace template. \n\nWe are only beginning to imagine and prototype the missions made possible with teams of UAS. This thesis provides problem formulations\, solution methods\, and experimental realizations for four multi-UAS mission configurations. Countless other missions can be pursued that will operate safely and can improve quality of life. Continued research is needed to achieve this including full system integration with onboard sensing and collaboration with key stakeholders for each mission that deeply understand the problem spaces. Nonetheless\, this thesis provides a solid foundation for future researchers to build upon.

For more information on the current exhibit\, visit IRWG’s website.

SUMMARY:Performance:Skerryvore
DESCRIPTION:Skerryvore first formed on the tiny lsle of Tiree off Scotland's west coast in 2005. Back then\, the band consisted of Tiree-born brothers Daniel Gillespie (accordion) and Martin Gillespie (bagpipes\, whistles & accordion) who bonded with holidaymaker Fraser West (drums & vocals) and friend Alec Dalglish (lead vocals & guitar) over a shared love of music: everything from traditional to rock and jazz. It was this mix of musical styles and sounds that set the path for the band's 2005 debut album\, \"West Coast Life.\" The more the fledgling band experimented with fusing together this mix of musical styles\, the more their signature sound evolved. The group expanded to a sextet and then to an octet\, and the release of their self-titled third album saw them catapulted into the musical limelight\, winning a string of prestigious awards and critical acclaim. Since then they've toured the globe\, appeared in TV commercials promoting Scotland\, and unveiled their own tartan. Come by and pick up a copy of their latest album\, \"Live Across Scotland.\"\n---\nProof of COVID vaccination required for entry.
