SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware
DESCRIPTION:A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.\n\nA “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group\, such as wine and cheese. For example\, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces\, spicy food\, hors d’oeurvres\, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese\, a couple\, or a clothing selection.\n\nSometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney\, Ph.D.\, and Juli McLoone are serving in \"A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware.\" The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting\, or\, we hope\, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shared Humanity
DESCRIPTION:July 30 - August 31\, 2022\nMon-Fri from 8:30am-5pm and Sat-Sun 10am-2:30pm.\nGallery 100 at 100 Silver Maples Dr\, Chelsea\, MI 48118\nParking available near the main entrance. Please sign in and screen yourself in the entryway.\n\nAdditional Information: https://myumi.ch/Nmx2j\n\nBeginning Saturday\, July 30\, the exhibit Shared Humanity will be featured at Silver Maples in Chelsea from the Prison Creative Arts Project’s (PCAP) private collection. The artwork is for sale and will be on display in the 100 Gallery through August 31\, 2022.\n\nAccording to Sarah Unrath\, Curator and Arts Programming Coordinator of PCAP\, “the exhibition is designed to connect viewer to artist through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams\, memories\, goals\, pasts. We all process emotions of anger\, joy\, grief\, nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have dealt with complex realities of being human.”\n\nThe curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated\, and the team at Silver Maples\, to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists\, including Andy Wynkoop\, An ArtsyGuy\, RIK\, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson\, and many others.\n\n“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection\, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity\,” says Unrath\n\nThe 100 Gallery is open Mon-Fri are 8:30am-5pm and Sat-Sun 10am-2:30pm. \nAdmission is free and open to the public. \nSales will be conducted in person on Saturday\, August 6 with alternative phone sale appointments available: https://myumi.ch/DJ6M5\n\nSpecial Storytelling Event: Creating Art Inside\nSaturday\, Aug 6\, 2022 @ 2:00pm\nMaples Room at 100 Silver Maples Dr\, Chelsea\, MI 48118\n\nIn this hour\, we take a look into the lives of artists that created work in the most difficult of circumstances: prison. Hear first hand about their lived experiences and the impact art-making had on their time behind the walls. Hosted by the Prison Creative Arts Project. In-person art sales will be available before and after the event.

Now firmly established as one of Irish music's leading exponents on the international world music stage\, Téada has played major festivals around North America\, and in Europe they've drawn crowds of more than 30\,000. The band's varied sound draws on the inspiring early recordings of Sligo emigrants who recorded in America in the 1920s era\, while also engaging with new compositions by leading traditional composers. Lately the band has added younger members who insure the traditional flame will be burning brightly for years to come. Téada comes to Michigan with a new album\, its sixth on the Gael Linn label.\n---\nProof of COVID vaccination required for entry.
Bon Appetit!

Bon Appetit!

Each has something to say\, something to gossip about\, and something to complain about. \n\n\"Invisible Women: Portraits of Aging in Ukraine\" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies. The exhibit is on display for public viewing weekdays from 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. through August 18\, 2022\, in the main lobby of Lane Hall\, located at 204 South State Street\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109. SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit features various aspects of the Native North American powwow. More specifically\, it features the history and culture behind Ann Arbor’s \"Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\,\" which is approaching its much-anticipated 50th celebration.\n\nThe Dance for Mother Earth Powwow is a multi-decade\, intertribal celebration of Indigenous cultures. It grew from its early beginnings as a small gathering in a field just outside of Ann Arbor into one of the largest student-led powwows in North America. The event attracts crowds of thousands — dancers\, singers\, artists\, tribal members from across the country\, and non-Indigenous members of the community.\n\nStop by to learn more about The Dance for Mother Earth Powwow\, modern Indigenous culture\, and resources to connect to today on campus.\n\nThis exhibition was curated by Michigan Library Scholar interns\, Allison Jiang and Andrea Medina. The Michigan Library Scholars internship program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to research and develop a capstone project under the guidance of experienced library professionals at one of the largest academic research libraries in the world.

Bon Appetit!

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Lane Hall Gallery Summer Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In this exhibit\, artists Ashley Bigham (photographs) and Grace Mahoney (watercolors) investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine’s older generation of women embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous: the babusya. Seen in public transport\, in the market\, and on the street\, each babusya has a story to tell.

DESCRIPTION:RSVP here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAqceGoqDosHN15uxUlzCWWN6qwjNjSQpj_ \n\nJoin us in community to practice mindfulness meditation\, a life-enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. This formal\, largely-guided\, practice utilizes evidence-based cognitive training that bolsters one's ability to handle stress\, poor mood\, and threat.  This weekly mindfulness practice encourages present moment\, non-judgemental\, awareness – noticing where your focus and attention are and continually inviting attention to current mind and body sensations in a kind and compassionate way.\n\nMindfulness meditation opens the possibility to pause\, gain perspective\, attend to the present\, and respond accordingly. In our ever-changing\, complex\, and challenging world\, mindfulness can provide grounding. As one form of contemplative practice\, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.\n\nWhether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner\, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. All are welcome to attend weekly or drop-in as their schedule allows.

SUMMARY:Careers / Jobs:Yelping From Home: The Tech Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk: Make Life Better for Services Business Owners\n\nYelp iswell known for its restaurant reviews\, waitlist and reservations. However\, in recent years\, we’ve also built a wide range of features in the local services domain\, aiming to make our business owners successful by helping them connect with consumers. Sui Ting will highlight some features we built and evolved for business owners over recent years. We will also discuss the overall design and some specific technologies Yelp employs to make building such features both straightforward and fun!\n\nSpeaker: Sui Ting Yeung\nSui Ting is originally from Shanghai and graduated from the University of California\, Irvine\, majoring in computer science and business economics. He has since been a backend engineer at Yelp on the service leads team for the last three years. He is one of the founding engineers building the leads platform and improving the Request-a-Quote experience. He worked on both consumer-facing\, business-facing features and technical infrastructure work. He enjoys working across the stack from microservice anddatabase design to data pipeline building. Aside from work\, he is also passionate about tennis\, poker and traveling.\n\nModerator: Tim Go\nTim isa systems engineer on the Core Infra team at Yelp responsible for the company's internal corporate systems infrastructure. He is from San Francisco\, has been with Yelp for five years\, and enjoys traveling—one of the international joys of the world—while learning new languages and culture. Before joining Yelp\, he worked at WeWork\, a real-estate startup based in NYC. Tim studied General Business at City College of San Francisco and is a Microsoft Certified Professional.\n\n\n\nAbout Yelping From Home:\nYelp’s mission is to connect people with great local businesses\, and two of the teams working behind the scenes to make that happen are our five star engineering and product teams.\nPlaying an active role in our community is a value that we have strongly prioritized over the years. Typically we would invite you to come to Yelp’s HQ to network\, grab a slice of ‘za\, and learn about the technology and culture behind Yelp. With stay-at-home orders across the globe\, Yelp (like many of you) has had no choice butto adapt to these changes. We understand that this is a strange and challenging time for many\, so we’d like to invite you to join us as we navigate this new normal for the tech community together.\nTo stay connected\, create space for folks to collaborate and share some of the things Yelp has been working on\, we are launching our very own virtual tech talk series. This series of talks will feature Yelp employees from engineering and product share their stories about career development\, technical skills and workplace challenges in a well-distributed environment.\n\n

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Physics Graduate Summer Symposium (PGSS) | Coherent Imaging Spectroscopy of van-der-Waals materials
DESCRIPTION:Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received considerable attention in the past decade for their optoelectronic applications in photovoltaics\, lasers\, and quantum information. In the monolayer limit\, these materials exhibit extraordinary properties\, including efficient light-matter coupling\, ultrafast charge transfer\, long-lived interlayer bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) which are stable at room temperature\, and many-body excitonic interactions. In this talk\, I will present how multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (MDCS) allows us to study coherent and incoherent coupling between excitons in TMD heterostructures. I will further show how the development of a novel lock-in amplifier allows us to combine MDCS with imaging and study the changes of key sample properties for quantum information applications across TMD monolayers and heterostructures. Lastly\, the talk will cover how to accelerate nonlinear imaging techniques to implement them in fabrication settings with experimental results supporting the advantage of four-wave mixing-based imaging over conventional material characterization techniques.

Bon Appetit!

SUMMARY:Presentation:The Clements Bookworm: The Strange Genius of Mr. O: The World of The United States' First Forgotten Celebrity
DESCRIPTION:When James Ogilvie arrived in America in 1793\, he was a deeply ambitious but impoverished teacher. By the time he returned to Britain in 1817\, he had become a bona fide celebrity known simply as Mr. O\, counting the nation’s leading politicians and intellectuals among his admirers. And then\, like so many meteoric American luminaries afterward\, he fell from grace.\n\nThe Strange Genius of Mr. O is at once the biography of a remarkable performer--a gaunt Scottish orator who appeared in a toga--and a story of the United States during the founding era.\n\nWhy should we care about a now-forgotten celebrity of the early 19th century? Carolyn Eastman (Associate Professor of History\, Virginia Commonwealth University) examines an explosive celebrity performer who captivated audiences at a key moment in the founding era\, a man whose career featured many of the hallmarks of celebrity we recognize from later eras: glamorous friends\, eccentric clothing\, scandalous religious views\, and even a drug habit. And yet examining his career and the Americans who loved (or hated) him reveals a vivid portrait of the United States in the midst of invention.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Conversation on Indigenous Performance and Production
DESCRIPTION:Creating\, performing\, producing\, and distributing works of art are fundamental processes for many artist. In a conversation moderated by Department of American Culture Assistant Professor Bethany Hughes (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma)\, representatives from an Indigenous film festival in Virginia and an Indigenous theatre company in Michigan will discuss practice\, performance\, and production through an Indigenous creative lens. Joining the conversation will be Brad Brown (Pamunkey)\, director of Pocahontas Reframed: Native American Storytellers Film Festival\, and Colleen Medicine (Ojibwe Sault Ste. Marie)\, Executive Director of Anishinaabe Theater Exchange\, and Tomantha Sylvester (Ojibwe Sault Ste. Marie)\, artistic director of Anishinaabe Theater Exchange.
