As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work. His work is so original\, fresh and contemporary\, while at the same time harkening back to the traditions of Mexican muralists like Diego Rivera. In humans\, although unstable early environments are associated with greater risk for psychopathology\, less is known about how unstable environments impact brain development. Furthermore\, no study to date has examined household instability and white matter even though myelination plays a crucial role in solidifying neural connections and limiting plasticity. Although white matter networks become more efficient with development\, more densely connected networks may require increased maintenance cost\, which could present vulnerability to stress if achieved too early. In this talk\, I will present results suggesting structural network as a mechanism that links early instability and depression at young adulthood\, highlighting the ways in which early adverse experiences can modulate neural development and mental health.\n\nSuarez: \nTitle: Exposure to community violence as a mechanism linking neighborhood disadvantage to amygdala reactivity and the protective role of parental nurturance\n \nAbstract: Recent research links neighborhood disadvantage to alterations in brain function within regions supporting socioemotional and threat processing. However\, less is known about the proximal mechanisms through which neighborhood disadvantage is associated with brain function. One way that disadvantaged neighborhoods may confer risks for youth is by increasing their exposure to community violence. Still\, neighborhood disadvantage and exposure to community violence do not predict psychopathology or brain development for all youth\; many youth exhibit resilience\, and nurturing parenting may play a critical role in these good outcomes. In this talk\, I will present findings which show that exposure to community violence is an important mechanism explaining the link between neighborhood disadvantage and heightened amygdala reactivity to threat in a large sample of youth exposed to neighborhood disadvantage. Lastly\, I will show that youth with highly nurturing parents are protected from the risks posed by living in a disadvantaged neighborhood. These findings elucidate a mechanism linking neighborhood disadvantage to brain function and highlight the role parents can play in protecting youth from the neural effects of exposure to adversity. An important question is when and why a cell might permanently lose its ability to self-replicate (lose viability) and thereby transition into being a dead cell. In this talk\, I will describe two studies in which we used the budding yeast\, S. cerevisiae\, and modeling to answer these questions in the context of high and frigid temperatures. Temperature is a universal parameter for living systems in that it controls the speed of all biochemical reactions in all organisms and every habitat. By either increasing the temperature to sufficiently high values or decreasing the temperature to sufficiently low values\, we aimed to drastically slow down the pace at which yeast’s replicative life could proceed. By doing so\, we uncovered principles that limit self-replication at high and near-freezing temperatures. For both high temperatures (> 38 C) and near-freezing temperatures (0 C - 5 C)\, we found ways to extend yeast's ability to duplicate: we could enable more cells to duplicate with drastically shortened doubling times. We constructed \"phase diagrams\" that describe cell-population growths for both temperature regimes. The same mathematical model\, with one free parameter\, reproduced both phase diagrams as well as stochastic proliferation of individual cells. At near-freezing temperatures\, we discovered \"speed limits” for yeast: the smallest and largest possible cell-doubling times defined for each frigid temperature. A cell that progresses more slowly than a \"low-speed limit\" defined for each temperature faces a certain death. To carry out this function\, gastric smooth muscle cells (SMC) maintain and coordinate their contractions and relaxations across regions of the stomach. The pattern of muscle activity is intrinsically paced by a propagating electrical rhythm initiated by the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) and extrinsically regulated by the brain through peripheral nerves innervating the stomach. The ICC-initiated electrical slow wave paces the peristaltic mechanical wave through the active coupling between ICC and SMC (or the electromechanical coupling). The strength of this coupling is up- or down-regulated by the brain through descending vagal nerves\, which selectively innervate different types of enteric motor neurons that either excite or inhibit SMC\, respectively. The neural control of gastric muscle activity varies across times and conditions to support a wide range of ingestive and digestive processes. In this thesis research\, sensors\, devices\, and signal processing methods were developed for simultaneous recording and real-time analysis of gastric electrical and mechanical activity. Experiments with rats were performed to demonstrate the feasibility of concurrent strain and electrical recordings in both acute and chronic settings. The relationships between the recorded electrical and mechanical activities were evaluated minute-by-minute in terms of their phase\, frequency\, and amplitude. The electromechanical coupling was stronger and less variable after animals consumed a test meal (or in the fed state) than when the stomach was empty following overnight deprivation of food and drink (or in the fasted state). This finding suggests that the electromechanical coupling may serve as a quantitative biomarker that reports on the real-time neural control of gastric motility\, discriminates different gastric states\, and by doing so\, provides a feedback signal for closed-loop neuromodulation of the stomach. As galaxies merge\, pairs of black holes can form and eventually lead to binary black holes emitting gravitational waves detectable by current pulsar timing arrays and future space-based observatories. There are discrepancies between current pulsar timing array data and our current understanding of the coevolution of galaxies and black holes. How black hole masses evolve relative to their host galaxies is unknown and may solve this discrepancy. In this talk\, I will give a brief overview of how black hole masses are measured and how the masses relate to their host galaxies and what we still need to know. I will present recent (and still in progress) results of my group's work on looking at different black-hole-mass--galaxy scaling relations predict different results for gravitational wave background measurements\, potentially solving the discrepancy. I will also discuss how X-ray and optical observations can break degeneracies in our understanding of how black holes pair up and merge. Here\, we use the model bacterium Bacillus subtilis to investigate the contribution of RNases HII (RnhB) and HIII (RnhC) to hybrid removal\, DNA replication\, and mutagenesis genome-wide. Deletion of either rnhB or rnhC alters RNA:DNA hybrid formation\, but with distinct patterns of mutagenesis and hybrid accumulation. For ΔrnhB\, hybrids form preferentially in genes transcribed co-directionally with DNA replication. For ΔrnhC\, hybrids accumulate in all genes regardless of their orientation\, and DNA replication is disrupted leading to transversions and structural variation. We find that base deamination in the displaced strand of an R-loop leads to transition mutations in coding sequences\, independent of gene orientation. Our results resolve the outstanding question of how hybrids in native genomic contexts interact with replication to cause mutagenesis.\n\nBio:\nI am a Research Investigator in the Department of Biological Chemistry at University of Michigan. I am interested in how heterogeneity arises in bacterial populations\, which has led me to study mechanisms of genome instability and mutagenesis. Mechanisms of mutagenesis have been difficult to understand because multiple factors\, such as DNA replication\, local sequence context\, gene expression\, and R-loop abundance converge to influence the mutation rate of a given genomic locus. Natural selection further confounds our understanding of mutagenic mechanisms by effectively masking from observation a subset of mutations that occur. By combining multiple disparate observations of gene expression\, R-loop abundance\, DNA replication\, and mutagenesis\, I have assembled the necessary resources to assign roles for several biological processes in mutagenesis. The involved artists are painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, poets\, translators\, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war\, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east. \n\nThe featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:\n\n“— our love’s gone missing\, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis\,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”\n\nLike in Yakimchuk’s poem\, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. In this talk\, I will focus on combinatorial problems under uncertainty\; specifically when we only have partial knowledge about the input. Solutions to such problems are sequential decision processes that make decisions one by one “adaptively” (depending on prior observations). While such adaptive solutions achieve the best objective\, the inherently sequential nature makes them undesirable in many applications. My current research seeks to answer the following: how well can solutions with only a few adaptive rounds approximate fully-adaptive solutions? In this talk\, I will formally define the model\, and discuss techniques used to answer this question for the stochastic submodular cover problem\, which captures problems in domains like sensor placement\, medical diagnosis\, active learning\, and hypothesis testing. I will also state limited adaptivity results that I have obtained for the stochastic score classification and dueling bandits problems. I will conclude the talk with some future work and open problems.\n\nPresenter Bio:\nRohan Ghuge is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) at the University of Michigan where he is advised by Dr. Viswanath Nagarajan. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. The human body is made up of over 60% water and humanity cannot survive without it. Water is a vital life source that holds (and generates) power. It is nourishing\, quenching\, and refreshing but has also been commodified\, polluted\, and politicized. From the Standing Rock\, Leech Lake and Fond du Lac reservations\, to the straits of Mackinac where oil pipelines threaten important waterways\, to the polluted Mississippi River and drying Colorado River Basin\, to water shutoffs in Detroit\, PFAs in Ann Arbor\, and the Flint Water crisis (to name just a few)\, ensuring access to clean water (and the sustainable ecologies it supports) is an ongoing struggle that requires intersectional\, intergenerational\, and collective knowledge sharing\, discussion and action to protect. \nCall for Work\nStamps Gallery invites the undergraduate and graduate students of Penny W. As the pandemic grips our nation it has exposed the social\, political\, and economic disparities that have disproportionately impacted Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color. The world witnessed in horror and sadness the meaningless loss of African American lives with George Floyd\, Breonna Taylor\, Ahmaud Arbery\, among many others that we will never know. National and international outcries brought people together from multiple races\, genders\, and generations - on social media and in the streets - to publicly demand an end to police brutality\, structural racism\, and emphasizing that Black Lives Matter. What is the role of a university gallery in this time of crisis? How can we foster an inclusive platform for the students in our community to voice their ideas and foster a community based on equality\, belonging\, respect? At the center of the “picture” and surrounded by a jeering crowd\, the viewer becomes literally and conceptually involved as the one who is about to fight and defend themself. Depending on where the viewer is standing in the space\, however\, a different perspective can emerge\, suggesting that even a public\, collective experience is highly subjective.\n\nLike much of Diaz’s work\, *La Pelea/The Fight* brings into question the reliability of the narrator and the complexity of stories\, especially as they pertain to the manipulation of facts and suggestions of criminality by the media and those in positions of power. It is timely in an era defined by polarity and politically driven half-truths and fictions\, and a reminder that it is the necessary tension of a myriad of perspectives that bring us closer to some truth\, rather than the singular view from where we are standing. \n\nAbout the Artist\nBorn in 1977 in Mexico\, Diaz considers image and information\, and how the media and individuals represent stories to a different end. His immersive Panoramic paintings allow for the viewer to be witness\, gaining a different perspective or experience depending on the positioning in relation to the work.
