SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy
DESCRIPTION:Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy\, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities\, communications\, and safety. \nThis work stems from artist Caroline Sinders&#039\; previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of &#039\;infrastructural&#039\; and &#039\;architectural&#039\; spaces\, both online and offline\, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures\, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure\, and open\, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research\, Sinders analyzed how structures\, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth\, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience\, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque\, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.\nCaroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art &amp\; Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders&#039\; residency and practice in this Q&amp\;A.\nSinders is an award winning critical designer\, researcher\, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab\, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years\, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence\, intersectional justice\, systems design\, harm\, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern\, the United Nations\,the European Commission\, Ars Electronica\, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Sinders is currently based between London\, UK and New Orleans\, USA.

SUMMARY:Performance:Keller Williams & Steve Poltz
DESCRIPTION:Gonzograss stalwart Keller Williams brings back his \"Shut the Folk Up and Listen\" series with one of his favorite folk gurus\, Steve Poltz. As Keller said in 2016 when he kicked off this seated evening of song and stories concept with Leo Kottke and again in 2018 with Martin Sexton\, \"I take great pride in the evolution of my career. Between all the electronic toys and all the eclectic people that allow me into their worlds\, this set goes back to the beginning. Guitar and microphone. Loopless. I focus on material that can be enjoyed while sitting and listening. Not necessarily slow songs but instrumentals and lyrics that are often overlooked when performed in venues with no seats. Don't get me wrong\, I enjoy those venues and look forward to hopefully playing them for the rest of my life. This set focuses on the listening rather than the dancing and the socializing. You'll hear songs you recognize and a few you won't. I may even hit you up for a request. All in all\, its a loose night in comfortable chairs with acoustic music. So shut the folk up and listen. Please.” You can expect one set from each artist and a collaborative endeavor at the end. A seated evening of song\, story and if all goes well\, laughter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:a way outta no way
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MORE (FACULTY) Session: Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start
DESCRIPTION:This workshop helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles\, and consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then\, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs\, goals\, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.\nFaculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.\nOptional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.\nRegistration is required at myumi.ch/Rp5Vy\nSeparate registration for students is available at: myumi.ch/DwZ67\nWe want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event\, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time\, preferably one week\, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Openings: Title Pages in the History of Printed Books
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CSEAS Film Screening and Discussion. Dragon For Sale
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Michigan in collaboration with the Graduate Education & Training in Southeast Asian Studies (GETSEA) consortium and Justice in Southeast Asia Lab (JSEALab)\, is proud to present a screening of Dragon for Sale followed by a discussion with the film’s Director\, Producers\, and Research Team.\n \n Dragon for Sale documents the Indonesian government’s “10 New Balis” development project in Eastern Indonesia and its attempts to turn Flores and the Komodo Islands into an international tourist destination. The documentary film highlights the darker side of the project’s history\, including catastrophic environmental degradation and multiple human rights violations as local populations are forced out of their ancestral homes to make way for resorts and restaurants.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Vision 2034 Idea Generation with the Well-being Collective
DESCRIPTION:President Santa J. Ono has called on the campus community to join in a collective visioning process\, where we are asked to envision the University of Michigan in the year 2034.\nThis process will\, according to President Ono\, help us to clarify who we are\, what we stand for\, and where we are going as a great university. We believe that any comprehensive vision for U-M in 2034 will incorporate the work of the Well-Being Collective. So we are inviting you to join us in a facilitated visioning session. This engaging\, interactive session\, led by the Vision 2034 project team\, will invite us to engage questions across a range of topics (from academic programs to student experience to spaces\, places\, and processes).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"Global Childhood vaccine mandates: are they tackling the right problem?\"-
DESCRIPTION:Undervaccination in high income countries results from both deliberate vaccine refusal and access or logistical problems. These barriers are commonly thought to affect very different social groups. However\, popular and political discourse emphasises the vaccine refusing parent as the policy target of new vaccine mandates. Discourses around the need for strict mandatory policies may or may not acknowledge disadvantaged populations facing access problems\, and the policies themselves may or may not differentiate between underserved populations and those who deliberately refuse vaccines. This talk explores how these two distinct categories of under-vaccinated populations are treated within new mandatory childhood vaccination policies in Australia\, Italy\, France\, and California\, and why it matters.

DESCRIPTION:RSVP here: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJAqceGoqDosHN15uxUlzCWWN6qwjNjSQpj_ \n\nJoin us in community to practice mindfulness meditation\, a life-enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. As one form of contemplative practice\, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.\n\nWhether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner\, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary QC-CM Seminar | Design Principles for Sustainable Chemistry: A Theoretical and Machine Learning Approach
DESCRIPTION:The overarching goal of our group is to develop new methods to extract sustainable fuels\, polymers and chemicals from plants. Our approach has been to develop and apply computational tools to both biological and chemical conversion processes as part of an iterative ‘model-validate-predict’ design process for de novo catalysts. \n\nWith its high carbon and hydrogen content\, lignocellulosic biomass presents an alternative to petroleum as a nearly carbon-neutral precursor to upgraded liquid fuels. I will present some representative results in designing new catalysts for biological and chemocatalytic processes of biomass.\n\nOur group has introduced a “Fuel property first” design approach to reduce emissions and increase performance for biofuel candidates. Traditional approaches for developing these mechanistic models require many years for each new molecule\, a pace that is poorly suited to the large-scale search for new bioderived blendstocks. We have developed chemistry and physics informed graph neural networks models to predict few fuel properties including yield sooting index (YSI)\, cetane number (CN)\, critical temperature (T_c)\, and heat of vaporization (HoV). These properties are key factors in determining fuel performance\, emissions\, and safety\, and can vary substantially between bioblendstock candidates under consideration. The model and methodology used in this work can be applied to other fuel properties\, leading to rational principles for designing high-performance fuels.

SUMMARY:Performance:Frances Luke Accord // Christ Dupont
DESCRIPTION:A Midwestern double bill\n\nWhen Nicholas Gunty and Brian Powers put their songs and voices together\, there is a delicate magic that commands the room to attention. The duo is known as Frances Luke Accord\, and they are what NPR’s Mountain Stage calls “the definition of lean-in music.” Their soft\, contemplative vintage of indie-folk gestures toward a timelessness that honors the Simon & Garfunkel comparisons but pushes beyond into the world of Bon Iver\, Jose Gonzalez\, and progressive folk music. The duo's 2021 \"Sunnyside EP\" (2021) offered a glimpse into the body of work Frances Luke Accord has developed in the midst of the COVID19 Covid pandemic\, and they come to Michigan with their long-awaited sophomore album.\n\nChris Dupont comes from Grand Rapids and now lives in Ypsilanti. He describes what he does as \"folk/ambient/singer-songwriter\" music\, and he's been influenced by James Taylor\, Glen Hansard\, Brian Eno\, Bon Iver\, and Fleetwood Mac. A promising combination! He says he reads a lot of Bradbury and Tolkien. This is a songwriter who will transport you into his own world. Jeff Milo of eCurrent praises Chris for “lyrics that punch the gut in slow motion.” Chris also comes to The Ark with a new release\, “Floodplains.”\n\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3857/3858 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:In-person Arabic Placement test_May 4\, 2023 (11:00am-2:30pm)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:\na. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.\nWhere can I view my results?\nPlacement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.\nYou will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test\n* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* The Summer Language Institute (June & July) offers intensive Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102\, combined)\, Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined)\, and Arabic 401 & 402.\nAbout the UM Arabic programUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand either the Egyptian dialect or the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to learning to read and write and understand formal Arabic (fuSHa). Students starting to learn Arabic\, if they have no background in Arabic\, can choose to take either dialect or can switch their dialect focus from one semester to the next. The dialect focus of each class section is indicated in the schedule of classes. If you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.\n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Doug Bayliss\, Ph.D.\, University of Virginia
DESCRIPTION:A homeostatic control system for breathing regulation serves to maintain blood gases and tissue acid-base status\, with lung ventilation dynamically regulated to maintain CO2/H+ within a narrow physiological range. In this talk\, we will describe the identification of a long-sought group of brainstem neurons that are critically responsible for CO2 sensation in the service of breathing control\, and of the molecular proton detectors that subserve this sensory function. We will also describe some of the intrinsic properties and neuromodulatory capabilities of these neurons\, including our discovery of a peptidergic system that activates at the time of birth to stabilize breathing. Finally\, we will provide evidence that this system may contribute to various breathing disorders\, including congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS).\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nDoug Bayliss\, Ph.D.\nJoseph & Frances Larner Professor and Chair of Pharmacology\nUniversity of Virginia\, Charlottesville\n\nDoug Bayliss obtained his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of North Carolina and\, after postdoctoral training in Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington\, he joined the faculty at the University of Virginia where he is currently the Joseph and Frances Larner Professor and Chair of Pharmacology. Dr. Bayliss has a long-standing interest in cellular and ionic mechanisms that regulate brain function\, with a particular interest in the receptors\, signaling pathways and ion channel effectors that underlie neurotransmitter/neuropeptide modulation of brainstem neurons involved in cardiorespiratory control. Another area of interest is in understanding activation of Pannexin ion channels\, which are widely expressed and release ATP and other metabolites for intercellular signaling in multiple (patho)physiological contexts. \n\nPlease Note:\nThis is a Hybrid Seminar: In person at Palmer Commons Forum Hall and on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Whitewashing Anime Adaptations: Ghost in the Shell and Dragonball Evolution
DESCRIPTION:In David Oh’s presentation “Whitewashing Anime Remakes: Ghost in the Shell and Dragonball Evolution\,” he makes a theoretical argument for “whitewashing” as an erasure of difference that centers and makes visible White subjectivity. Specifically\, he argues that because of contemporary racial politics\, Asian and Asian Americans are vulnerable to filmic erasure. He argues that whitewashing is among many strategies of White supremacy and that whitewashing operates by extending whiteness’s boundaries. For the talk\, he focuses on his chapter on anime adaptations\, including Dragonball Evolution and Ghost in the Shell to describe the ways Asianness is distorted and minimized in order to subjectify the White hero.

SUMMARY:Other:Investigating the Electrochemical Behavior of Uranium in Chloride Melts
DESCRIPTION:Molten salt nuclear reactors are a promising technology for the production of green energy. The high boiling points and low vapor pressures of these systems make them considerably safer than traditional light water reactors\, and the ability to run molten salt reactors in a breeder/burner configuration results in higher material use efficiency\, and lower waste generation. One key challenge associated with these systems is material corrosion\, and understanding how actinide materials\, such as uranium\, can affect corrosion kinetics in these systems is an important goal. In this talk\, Dr. Lhermitte outlines the design and construction of the electroanalytical capabilities of the molten salt chemistry laboratory at Los Alamos National Lab to investigate these problems. Key discoveries as part of this work were: the design of a new type of sealed Mg/MgCl2 reference electrode\, the preparation of small area electrodes for high resolution cyclic voltammetry\, and the development of electromotive force measurements to determine the formal potential of U3+/U0 in chloride melts. Finally\, Dr. Lhermitte also outlines how molten salt electrochemical methods can be leveraged to electrodeposit materials with extremely low reduction potentials\, such as Zr\, for applications as coatings in solid state nuclear fuels.\nCharles Lhermitte (Los Alamos National Lab)

SUMMARY:Performance:Hoodang
DESCRIPTION:Hoodang is David Rossiter\, Sophia Hanifi\, and Dave Keeney. For nearly two decades\, Hoodang has been mesmerizing audiences with its unique blend of dark\, driving\, off-kilter alt-country music. The band writes songs\, often in the first-person\, of people tarnished by bad blood and bad luck who still find ways to make it through to the next town\, day\, marriage\, con\, or bottle. Blending a driving\, fingerstyle rhythm guitar sound with a thrumming bass\, chiming electric guitar\, hammer down percussion\, and soaring vocal harmonies\, onstage Hoodang’s comfort zone has been a spontaneous\, careening edge that plays off the moment\, the mood\, and the room.

DESCRIPTION:Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly\, drop-in program designed to help you Mental well-being. \n\nAll U-M students\, faculty\, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required. \n\n*What will you learn?*\n\nThe guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation\, rejuvenation\, and meditation.\n\nRelaxation brings your body to a calm\, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level\, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions\, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly\, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice. \n\n*Why Meditate?*\n\nWhile physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape\, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically\, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony. \n\n*Please take Learn to Meditate session if you are new to the practice. These sessions are offered Monthly.* https://events.umich.edu/event/128708\n\n*Event Details*\n\nHeartfulness Guided Meditation \nFridays from 12-12:30 p.m. ET (except during university season days / holidays)\nJoin Via Zoom Meeting\nRegister to receive Passcode (see “Related links”\n\n\nThis wellness program is coordinated by ITS Teaching & Learning and provided at no cost by heartfulness.org.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series
DESCRIPTION:Social science increasingly uses data that requires advanced tools and algorithms. Preparing text\, audio\, and video data for analysis and running those analyses involves linking contemporary computational tools with datasets and major research challenges in ways that cut across disciplines. Building bridges between data scientists who develop the tools to analyze these data and social scientists who have datasets to address research questions in unprecedented ways that could benefit from them is critical for both opening the world of these new data and refining the tools for analysis.\n \nThe Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series\, jointly sponsored by MIDAS\, the AI Lab and ISR\, is designed to build connections between social scientists and data scientists to improve scholarship in both arenas. Scholars in both groups present research vision and cutting-edge methodology that could benefit from additional interdisciplinary collaboration and theorizing. The series connects faculty\, research scientists\, postdoctoral\, and graduate students to help build major research projects from their vision\, find the right methods for their data\, identify collaborators\, or find scholars who can help trial run the tools they have developed. \n \nEvents will be held from 2:00-3:30 PM in ISR 6050 (426 Thompson Street)\, with meetings in January\, February\, March\, April\, and May. Refreshments provided. We encourage you to sign up ahead of time: https://myumi.ch/7eZWG For more information\, or if you are interested in presenting work in progress at this series\, please contact Beth Uberseder (ubersbe@umich.edu).\n \nSpeakers TBA.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Foundations of Modern Physics Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop: Naturalness\, Renormalization\, and Fundamentality
DESCRIPTION:For more information\, please contact Francisco Calderón\, fcalder@umich.edu\n\nThe speakers of this panel will discuss questions about if and how \"naturalness\" guides theory choice\, how we only control and understand some theories at certain scales\, and how to interpret what non-fundamental theories can tell us about the world\, among others. Naturalness\, like simplicity or empirical adequacy\, is sometimes considered a criterion constraining the formulation of theories in high-energy physics or the choice among extant ones. One reason unnatural theories are deemed implausible is that their parameters are \"fine-tuned\;\" too big or small for the scale in which the theory operates. By emphasizing how the physics we describe at a certain scale depends on physics at smaller distances\, the methods known as \"renormalization group techniques\" have suggested that theories with unnatural parameters\, like the Higgs boson's mass in the Standard Model of particle physics\, are merely \"effective\" (as opposed to \"fundamental\"). Distinguishing the fundamental and the non-fundamental physical theories provides important guidance for future physics and naturalistic metaphysics.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Wall structures and curtain models of CAT(0) spaces
DESCRIPTION:Two of the most classical topics of study in geometric group theory are mapping class groups and CAT(0) cube complexes. This is in part because they both admit powerful combinatorial-like structures encoding interesting aspects of their geometries: curve graphs for the former and hyperplanes for the later. The broad class of CAT(0) spaces -- while also studied extensively in the literature-- generally lacks an intrinsic combinatorial structure similar to that present in cube complexes or mapping class groups. I will talk about recent work with Petyt and Spriano where we introduce two combinatorial objects for studying CAT(0) spaces: curtains which are analogues of cubical hyperplanes and the curtain model which is a counter part of the curve graph. Such structures allow for vast extensions of theorems known in the above contexts to that of CAT(0) spaces including an Ivanov-stlyle rigidity theorem\, a dichotomy of a rank-rigidity flavor and the presence of a universal hyperbolic space for rank-one elements.
