SUMMARY:Exhibition:a way outta no way
DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibition\nAs part of the artist's vision for this project\, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects\, the space\, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver\, Viktor Givens\, Bryce Detroit\, Andrew Wilson\, and Efe Bes.\n\nAbout the Artist\nRicky Weaver is an image-based artist\, theorist\, and mother\, born in Ypsilanti\, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices\, dark sousveillance\, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena\, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami\, the Havana Biennale\, Sofa Expo\, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.\n\nWeaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020\, selected by Susan Thompson\, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University\, with a concentration in photography. \n\nWeaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant\, specializing in image theory and photography\, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.\n\nThis project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections
DESCRIPTION:Trace how astronomy was developed\, studied\, and disseminated through the centuries\, from 1500 BCE to the Renaissance. On display is material drawn from the University of Michigan collections dealing with the history of early astronomy: manuscripts\, early printed books\, and artifacts illustrating Mesopotamian\, Greek\, Islamic\, and Western European astronomy.\n\nThis exhibit and its permanent online counterpart (https://umlib.us/earlyastronomy) are part of the Aratus Project\, which was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and led by Prof. Francesca Schironi. The core of the project has been to study Aratus’ \"Phaenomena\,\" the most important poem on stars and constellations of the Graeco-Roman ancient world\, and its exegetical tradition. Read an annotated edition and English translation of \"Phaenomena\" and its commentaries (https://aratus.classics.lsa.umich.edu/). The physical and online exhibits place this research work within its later intellectual and historical context.\n\nCurated by: John Steele\, Professor of the History of the Exact Sciences in Antiquity\, Department of Egyptology and Assyriology\, Brown University\; Francesca Schironi\, U-M Professor of Classical Studies\; Evyn Kropf\, U-M Librarian for Middle Eastern & North African Studies\; Pablo Alvarez\, U-M Curator (Special Collections Research Center).\n\nCheck Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours: https://myumi.ch/2mx44

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit)\, open now through May 21st.\n\nA public reception will be held on March 9th\, 6:00–9:00 PM\, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.\n\nWe hope you will be able to see the exhibit\, and please be in touch if you have any questions.\n\nHumanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nMuseum hours\nThursdays–Saturdays: 10:00 AM–5:00PM \nSundays: 1:00–5:00 PM

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Openings: Title Pages in the History of Printed Books
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book\, the title page. Such pages signal and inform\, incite pleasure and intrigue\, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books. Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.\n\nThe exhibit is available for viewing in the Special Collections Research Center (on the sixth floor of the Hatcher Library)\, Monday-Friday\, 10am-4:30pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:In-person Arabic Placement test_May 4\, 2023 (11:00am-2:30pm)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:\na. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.\nWhere can I view my results?\nPlacement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.\nYou will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test\n* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* The Summer Language Institute (June & July) offers intensive Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102\, combined)\, Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined)\, and Arabic 401 & 402.\nAbout the UM Arabic programUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand either the Egyptian dialect or the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to learning to read and write and understand formal Arabic (fuSHa). Students starting to learn Arabic\, if they have no background in Arabic\, can choose to take either dialect or can switch their dialect focus from one semester to the next. The dialect focus of each class section is indicated in the schedule of classes. If you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.\n\n

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Doug Bayliss\, Ph.D.\, University of Virginia
DESCRIPTION:A homeostatic control system for breathing regulation serves to maintain blood gases and tissue acid-base status\, with lung ventilation dynamically regulated to maintain CO2/H+ within a narrow physiological range. In this talk\, we will describe the identification of a long-sought group of brainstem neurons that are critically responsible for CO2 sensation in the service of breathing control\, and of the molecular proton detectors that subserve this sensory function. We will also describe some of the intrinsic properties and neuromodulatory capabilities of these neurons\, including our discovery of a peptidergic system that activates at the time of birth to stabilize breathing. Finally\, we will provide evidence that this system may contribute to various breathing disorders\, including congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS).\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nDoug Bayliss\, Ph.D.\nJoseph & Frances Larner Professor and Chair of Pharmacology\nUniversity of Virginia\, Charlottesville\n\nDoug Bayliss obtained his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of North Carolina and\, after postdoctoral training in Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Washington\, he joined the faculty at the University of Virginia where he is currently the Joseph and Frances Larner Professor and Chair of Pharmacology. Dr. Bayliss has a long-standing interest in cellular and ionic mechanisms that regulate brain function\, with a particular interest in the receptors\, signaling pathways and ion channel effectors that underlie neurotransmitter/neuropeptide modulation of brainstem neurons involved in cardiorespiratory control. Another area of interest is in understanding activation of Pannexin ion channels\, which are widely expressed and release ATP and other metabolites for intercellular signaling in multiple (patho)physiological contexts. \n\nPlease Note:\nThis is a Hybrid Seminar: In person at Palmer Commons Forum Hall and on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Whitewashing Anime Adaptations: Ghost in the Shell and Dragonball Evolution
DESCRIPTION:In David Oh’s presentation “Whitewashing Anime Remakes: Ghost in the Shell and Dragonball Evolution\,” he makes a theoretical argument for “whitewashing” as an erasure of difference that centers and makes visible White subjectivity. Specifically\, he argues that because of contemporary racial politics\, Asian and Asian Americans are vulnerable to filmic erasure. He argues that whitewashing is among many strategies of White supremacy and that whitewashing operates by extending whiteness’s boundaries. For the talk\, he focuses on his chapter on anime adaptations\, including Dragonball Evolution and Ghost in the Shell to describe the ways Asianness is distorted and minimized in order to subjectify the White hero.

SUMMARY:Other:Investigating the Electrochemical Behavior of Uranium in Chloride Melts
DESCRIPTION:Molten salt nuclear reactors are a promising technology for the production of green energy. The high boiling points and low vapor pressures of these systems make them considerably safer than traditional light water reactors\, and the ability to run molten salt reactors in a breeder/burner configuration results in higher material use efficiency\, and lower waste generation. One key challenge associated with these systems is material corrosion\, and understanding how actinide materials\, such as uranium\, can affect corrosion kinetics in these systems is an important goal. In this talk\, Dr. Lhermitte outlines the design and construction of the electroanalytical capabilities of the molten salt chemistry laboratory at Los Alamos National Lab to investigate these problems. Key discoveries as part of this work were: the design of a new type of sealed Mg/MgCl2 reference electrode\, the preparation of small area electrodes for high resolution cyclic voltammetry\, and the development of electromotive force measurements to determine the formal potential of U3+/U0 in chloride melts. Finally\, Dr. Lhermitte also outlines how molten salt electrochemical methods can be leveraged to electrodeposit materials with extremely low reduction potentials\, such as Zr\, for applications as coatings in solid state nuclear fuels.\nCharles Lhermitte (Los Alamos National Lab)

SUMMARY:Performance:Hoodang
DESCRIPTION:Hoodang is David Rossiter\, Sophia Hanifi\, and Dave Keeney. For nearly two decades\, Hoodang has been mesmerizing audiences with its unique blend of dark\, driving\, off-kilter alt-country music. The band writes songs\, often in the first-person\, of people tarnished by bad blood and bad luck who still find ways to make it through to the next town\, day\, marriage\, con\, or bottle. Blending a driving\, fingerstyle rhythm guitar sound with a thrumming bass\, chiming electric guitar\, hammer down percussion\, and soaring vocal harmonies\, onstage Hoodang’s comfort zone has been a spontaneous\, careening edge that plays off the moment\, the mood\, and the room.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series
DESCRIPTION:Social science increasingly uses data that requires advanced tools and algorithms. Preparing text\, audio\, and video data for analysis and running those analyses involves linking contemporary computational tools with datasets and major research challenges in ways that cut across disciplines. Building bridges between data scientists who develop the tools to analyze these data and social scientists who have datasets to address research questions in unprecedented ways that could benefit from them is critical for both opening the world of these new data and refining the tools for analysis.\n \nThe Social Research with Unstructured Data: Connection Series\, jointly sponsored by MIDAS\, the AI Lab and ISR\, is designed to build connections between social scientists and data scientists to improve scholarship in both arenas. Scholars in both groups present research vision and cutting-edge methodology that could benefit from additional interdisciplinary collaboration and theorizing. The series connects faculty\, research scientists\, postdoctoral\, and graduate students to help build major research projects from their vision\, find the right methods for their data\, identify collaborators\, or find scholars who can help trial run the tools they have developed. \n \nEvents will be held from 2:00-3:30 PM in ISR 6050 (426 Thompson Street)\, with meetings in January\, February\, March\, April\, and May. Refreshments provided. We encourage you to sign up ahead of time: https://myumi.ch/7eZWG For more information\, or if you are interested in presenting work in progress at this series\, please contact Beth Uberseder (ubersbe@umich.edu).\n \nSpeakers TBA.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Foundations of Modern Physics Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop: Naturalness\, Renormalization\, and Fundamentality
DESCRIPTION:For more information\, please contact Francisco Calderón\, fcalder@umich.edu\n\nThe speakers of this panel will discuss questions about if and how \"naturalness\" guides theory choice\, how we only control and understand some theories at certain scales\, and how to interpret what non-fundamental theories can tell us about the world\, among others. Naturalness\, like simplicity or empirical adequacy\, is sometimes considered a criterion constraining the formulation of theories in high-energy physics or the choice among extant ones. One reason unnatural theories are deemed implausible is that their parameters are \"fine-tuned\;\" too big or small for the scale in which the theory operates. By emphasizing how the physics we describe at a certain scale depends on physics at smaller distances\, the methods known as \"renormalization group techniques\" have suggested that theories with unnatural parameters\, like the Higgs boson's mass in the Standard Model of particle physics\, are merely \"effective\" (as opposed to \"fundamental\"). Distinguishing the fundamental and the non-fundamental physical theories provides important guidance for future physics and naturalistic metaphysics.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Wall structures and curtain models of CAT(0) spaces
DESCRIPTION:Two of the most classical topics of study in geometric group theory are mapping class groups and CAT(0) cube complexes. This is in part because they both admit powerful combinatorial-like structures encoding interesting aspects of their geometries: curve graphs for the former and hyperplanes for the later. The broad class of CAT(0) spaces -- while also studied extensively in the literature-- generally lacks an intrinsic combinatorial structure similar to that present in cube complexes or mapping class groups. I will talk about recent work with Petyt and Spriano where we introduce two combinatorial objects for studying CAT(0) spaces: curtains which are analogues of cubical hyperplanes and the curtain model which is a counter part of the curve graph. Such structures allow for vast extensions of theorems known in the above contexts to that of CAT(0) spaces including an Ivanov-stlyle rigidity theorem\, a dichotomy of a rank-rigidity flavor and the presence of a universal hyperbolic space for rank-one elements.

SUMMARY:Other:Read and Look | Greece! Rome! Monsters!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our “Read and Look” program in the museum galleries on select Saturdays. We will take over a corner of the museum to read the book “Greece! Rome! Monsters!” by John Harris\, then find related artifacts and art on display. This tour is great for our younger visitors\, ages 4–8. All children must be accompanied by an adult. \n\nEverybody’s heard of a centaur\, but not everyone has seen a blue centaur dressed to head out to a disco! He’s one of the updated mythological creatures who populate “Greece! Rome! Monsters!”. This book presents twenty creepy creatures—from harpies to Medusa herself to the fire-breathing Chimera—in jazzy retellings by John Harris\, with eye-popping illustrations by Southern California illustrator Calef Brown. Together\, the words and pictures provide children (and grownups!) with close encounters of the mythological kind.\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page (https://lsa.umich.edu/kelsey/visit/accessibility.html) or contact the education office (734-647-4167). We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Performance:Oshima Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Songwriting and brother harmonies fused with engineering arts\n\nMaine-based indie duo Oshima Brothers have been creating music together since childhood. The brothers blend songs from the heart with blood harmonies to produce a \"roots-based pop sound that is infectious.\" (NPR) On stage\, Sean and Jamie offer lush vocals\, live looping\, foot percussion\, electric and acoustic guitars\, vintage keyboard and bass - often all at once. They want every show to feel like a deep breath\, a dance party and a sonic embrace. When not recording or touring they find time to film and produce their own music videos\, tie their own shoes and cook elaborate feasts. Maine Public Radio’s Sara Willis describes their songs as “beautiful\, those brother harmonies can’t be beat. They are uplifting and\, let’s face it\, we need uplifting these days.”\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3845/3846 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Clay as Soft Power: Shigaraki Ware in Postwar America and Japan
DESCRIPTION:Explore The Uncharted History of How Pottery Transformed Global Relations\n \nClay As Soft Power examines how Shigaraki ware ceramics transformed the American public’s image of Japan\, helping the country shift its identity from World War II enemy to Cold War ally to global cultural change maker.  Known for its earthy tones\, rough clay surfaces\, and natural ash glazes\, Shigaraki wares originated from one of six ancient kilns of Japan\, and has a rich history from the 13th century to today. This exhibition explores three distinct periods of that history\, telling a story of global intrigue\, covert international relations\, and the evolution of this uniquely Japanese art form.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, the Japan World Exposition 1970 Commemorative Fund\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, and the U-M Center for Japanese Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the Japan Foundation\, James M. Trapp\, Nancy and Joe Keithley\, and the William C. Weese\, M.D. Endowment for Ceramic Arts.  \n

SUMMARY:Performance:House of Hamill
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Brian Buchanan of Enter the Haggis and Rose Baldino of Burning Bridget Cleary\n\nRose Baldino and Brian Buchanan met ten years ago\, late one night backstage at a theater in rural Pennsylvania. Brian's band Enter The Haggis and Rose's group Burning Bridget Cleary were sharing a stage that evening\, and the two bonded over a love of Irish fiddle tunes\, Radiohead\, and 4 a.m. whiskey. Their paths crossed a dozen times over the next decade on the road\, but it wasn't until a 2014 conference that they finally became musical collaborators. Burning Bridget Cleary's guitarist and drummer had their flights canceled at the last minute\, and Rose (in desperation) asked Brian to grab a guitar and join her onstage. The two performed with virtually no rehearsal for over an hour\, and their connection was powerful and immediate. A few months later Brian moved from Canada to Philadelphia\, and as a tribute to the first tune Rose ever taught Brian\, House of Hamill was born. Brian and Rose are both accomplished traditional fiddle players and classical violinists\, and despite being young\, have over 25 years of writing and performance experience between them. Together\, they write unusual new fiddle tunes and exciting\, unpredictable original songs while also breathing new life into traditional and contemporary material. You've got to hear their viral all-violin version of \"Sweet Child o' Mine\"! They’re joined by bassist Caroline Browning.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3801/3802 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Distributed Decision-making in Disrupted Industrial Environments Using a Multi-agent Framework
DESCRIPTION:The modern industrial environment is becoming more complex and dynamic\, due to customized and shifting market demands\, highly connected businesses\, and frequently upgraded technologies. In such environments\, varying uncertainties and disruptions could occur and highly impact the performance of the manufacturing factories and supply chain networks. Conventional centralized decision-making approaches handle disruptions by re-optimizing across the entire system regardless of disruption type and scale\, which require significant computational efforts\, especially for complex and large-scale systems. Therefore\, to stay competitive\, industry enterprises need to develop a dynamic and flexible decision-making method that enables an agile and resilient response to these unexpected disruptions in industrial environments.\n\nEnabled by current Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques\, multi-agent control has been proposed to conduct distributed decision-making to provide an agile response to disruptions. A multi-agent system consists of various autonomous agents\, which are cyber representations of their associated physical objects and have their own knowledge and goals. Agents communicate and interact with each other to make high-level decisions for their associated physical objects. In different industrial environments\, agents could represent different system entities\, such as the products and machines in manufacturing systems\, or suppliers and customers in supply chains. However\, most existing industrial multi-agent systems require prior knowledge of disruptions and predetermined rules and strategies to generate responses\, which makes it difficult to handle unexpected disruptions. \n\nAiming to improve the agility and resiliency of industrial systems\, this dissertation develops a model-based multi-agent framework to address risk management within an agile and resilient response to various unexpected industrial disruptions. The proposed multi-agent framework comprises model-based agents\, heuristic-based communication\, and optimization-based decision-making. The model-based agent architecture enables agents to update their knowledge and local environments dynamically. When agents need to make decisions\, they utilize their knowledge as heuristics to instruct their communication strategies. Then based on their knowledge and communication information\, agents can identify new actions by solving risk-aware optimizations to respond to unexpected disruptions dynamically. The proposed framework is tested in a simulated manufacturing environment and a supply chain instance\, showcasing the improved flexibility\, agility\, and resiliency of the industrial systems. \n\nTo conclude\, this dissertation pushes the fields of distributed decision-making for industrial systems closer to satisfying the requirements of modern industry: flexibility\, agility\, and resiliency\, especially for manufacturing systems and supply chain networks. Enterprises could apply this framework to compute a resilient recovery plan to address a disruption quickly to minimize the negative effects. In addition\, this dissertation contributes to standardizing the design of system-level decision-making using a multi-agent framework. The proposed methodology to design a multi-agent framework is transferable to other complex systems\, such as multi-robot systems and autonomous vehicle teams\, that consist of multiple intelligent entities.\n\nZoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/94248906200\, Passcode: mingjie

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PROFESSOR NILS WALTER\, THE FRANCIS S. COLLINS COLLEGIATE PROFESSORSHIP IN CHEMISTRY\, BIOPHYSICS AND BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY\, INAUGURAL LECTURE
DESCRIPTION:Billions of safely given mRNA vaccine doses have saved millions of lives worldwide and proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that a transformative era of RNA Therapeutics is upon us\, with great promise for overcoming virtually all diseases within this century through personalized medicines. Yet RNA can do so much more! Since the human genome project was completed\, we know that at least 75% of our 3 billion DNA base pairs are transcribed into RNA\, with the vast majority not coding for proteins but rather for “non-coding” RNAs (ncRNAs). Many of these ncRNAs remain uncharacterized in terms of their structure and function\, spawning discussions of whether they are functional or not (and what “biological function” even is!). These applications and discoveries suggest that so far we have underestimated the far-reaching “RNA World” in our body\, which may well also have spawned life on earth. \nAfter an introduction to the power and benefits of these “new” and “old” RNA Worlds\, this seminar will highlight some of the foundational work by the Walter lab\, in which we use modern single molecule fluorescence microscopy to dissect and control the nanometer-sized RNA-protein assemblies that govern life\, and particularly gene expression. Specifically\, single molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (smFRET) allows us to measure distances at the 2-8 nm scale\, whereas complementary super-resolution localization techniques measure distances in the 10 nm and longer range where biology occurs. Embracing the power of these technical advances\, we have combined single-molecule\, biochemical and computational simulation approaches to show that a bacterial riboswitch – controlled by a metabolite ligand – manipulates the speed of the much larger bacterial RNA polymerase. We posit that many more examples of such intimate coupling between RNA folding and gene expression remain to be discovered\, leading to opportunities to identify new Achilles’ heels of the many pathogens that threaten human health. In addition\, we are developing tools to observe single RNA nanomachines in action within their natural habitats inside living cells\, leading to discoveries that may guide the development of novel cancer-fighting approaches.\n\n\nIf you are unable to attend this lecture in person please see below.\n\nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94011983924\nOr One tap mobile : \n US: +16468769923\,\,94011983924# or +16469313860\,\,94011983924# \nOr Telephone:\n Dial(for higher quality\, dial a number based on your current location):\n US: +1 646 876 9923 or +1 646 931 3860 or +1 301 715 8592 or +1 305 224 1968 or +1 309 205 3325 or +1 312 626 6799 or +1 719 359 4580 or +1 253 205 0468 or +1 253 215 8782 or +1 346 248 7799 or +1 360 209 5623 or +1 386 347 5053 or +1 507 473 4847 or +1 564 217 2000 or +1 669 444 9171 or +1 669 900 6833 or +1 689 278 1000 \n Canada: +1 587 328 1099 or +1 647 374 4685 or +1 647 558 0588 or +1 778 907 2071 or +1 780 666 0144 or +1 204 272 7920 or +1 438 809 7799 \nWebinar ID: 940 1198 3924\n International numbers available: https://umich.zoom.us/u/adhOU6qjZP\n\nOr an H.323/SIP room system:\n H.323: \n 162.255.37.11 (US West)\n 162.255.36.11 (US East)\n 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai)\n 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad)\n 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands)\n 213.244.140.110 (Germany)\n 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney)\n 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne)\n 149.137.40.110 (Singapore)\n 64.211.144.160 (Brazil)\n 149.137.68.253 (Mexico)\n 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto)\n 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver)\n 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo)\n 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka)\n Meeting ID: 940 1198 3924\n SIP: 94011983924@zoomcrc.com

SUMMARY:Performance:The Lone Bellow
DESCRIPTION:New music!\n\nWhen songwriter Zach Williams met guitarist and fellow Southerner Brian Elmquist and vocalist Kanene Donehey Pipkin at Dizzy's Diner in Brooklyn for breakfast one morning in 2010\, the trio decided to jam. \"Three songs in\,\" Williams recalls\, \"I decided I should quit what I'm going and just make music with these people.\" The trio's music is exuberant in its playing\, welcoming in its attitude. Though the lyrics have a melancholic undercurrent\, the tracks are more often rave-ups than ruminations\, with swelling three-part harmonies and rousing group-sung choruses\;The name \"The Lone Bellow\" refers to a lonely bull Zach Williams heard on a childhood family trip. Indeed\, there is a strong familial feel to The Lone Bellow\, a recurring theme of inclusiveness. The Lone Bellow comes to The Ark with a new album\, “Love Songs for Losers.”\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3961/3962 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Presentation:PREACT: Motion Sickness Alleviation in Autonomous Vehicles via Preemptive Interventions — CCAT Research Review
DESCRIPTION:While autonomous vehicles (AVs) promise a transportation future with several benefits\, a high incidence of motion sickness among passengers remains a major impediment to the widespread adoption of this promising technology.\n\nMotion sickness in a moving vehicle is the consequence of frequent acceleration and resulting inertial forces associated with driving actions such as speeding\, braking\, and turning. In a traditional vehicle\, the driver anticipates the inertial consequences of their own driving actions\, and accordingly makes subtle preemptive corrections. The passenger ends ups passively reacting to the inertial forces\, which leads to a far greater incidence of motion sickness. In a future world of AVs\, every occupant will be a passive passenger\, resulting in a greater likelihood and severity of motion sickness.\n\nIn this talk\, Professor Awtar will present the development and experimental validation of a novel motion sickness mitigation technology\, PREACT. The key idea behind the PREACT technology is to employ predictive algorithms that anticipate impending inertial events associated with driving and accordingly makes preemptive corrections via mechatronic hardware such as tip/tilt active seats\, active restraints\, and passenger stimuli before the inertial events happen. Instead of reacting to an inertial event that can produce motion sickness\, the PREACT system “pre-acts” ahead of time to avert motion sickness before it even happens.\n\nMore on this research: https://myumi.ch/kyxdD\n---\nAbout the speaker: Shorya Awtar is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. His research interests include mechanical design\, human-centric design\, mechatronic systems\, and robotics. He has developed affordable medical devices for minimally invasive surgery\, precision motion stages for semiconductor metrology\, motion sickness mitigation solutions for autonomous vehicles\, and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) actuators. Prior to joining U of M\, he worked at the General Electric Global Research Center and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He earned his Mechanical Engineering degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur\, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed conferences and journal articles and has three dozen inventions that are either patented or patent-pending. Professor Awtar has started two companies to commercialize the technologies developed in his research lab. He has received the Leonardo daVinci Award and Thomas A. Edison Patent Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)\, the Goel Award for Translational Research from the American Society of Biomechanics\, multiple R&D100 Awards\, and several Best Paper awards for his research\, innovations\, technology transfer\, and societal impact. He is a Fellow of the ASME and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses as well as professional tutorials in machine design\, mechanism design\, and mechatronic systems. He has also worked with the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum to create educational exhibits for K-12 children.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Thinking Beyond Stereotypes in Asian American Media
DESCRIPTION:Public discussions of Asian American media representation are often overdetermined by narratives of the racial injury of Hollywood stereotypes\, or what Black feminist Patricia Hill Collins called “controlling images.” But how have Asian American communities\, performers\, artists\, and thinkers challenged and refigured those controlling images for their own purposes?\n\nThis panel brings together the authors of four new books in Asian American media and cultural studies to examine historical\, ethnographic\, feminist\, transpacific\, and queer of color approaches to this question. Beyond simply contributing to knowledge “about” Asian American subjects\, each book shows us how Asian Americanist critique expands the possibilities of traditional disciplinary fields.\n\nSponsors: National Center for Institutional Diversity\; Anti-Racism Collaborative\; Diversity Scholars Network\; University of Michigan Library\; Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies Program\; Department of Film\, Television\, and Media

SUMMARY:Performance:Richard Thompson
DESCRIPTION:\"The finest rock songwriter after Dylan and the best electric guitarist since Hendrix\"—Los Angeles Times\n\nEver since his days with the pioneering folk-rock band Fairport Convention\, Richard John Thompson OBE\, the product of a working-class London family\, has gone his own way. If he so desired\, he could spend his time as a singer-songwriter\, performing and peddling his grim\, brilliant songs of love gone wrong. If he chose to\, he could just play his guitar\; he's one of the best guitarists on the planet\, and when it comes to making a guitar part of a song\, he's unmatched. But what really gets you about Richard Thompson is the sheer creativity of the man. Will he play a 14th-century ballad about the Battle of Agincourt? a Britney Spears cover? a rockabilly or Cajun rave-up? Named one of the top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone\, Richard Thompson is the recipient of a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award\, and a longtime favorite among audiences in southeastern Michigan. It's been hard to catch him lately in an intimate show\, so don't miss this chance! Come out and pick up a copy of Richard’s new book\, Beeswing: Losing My Way and Finding My Voice.\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3924/3925 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:An Experiment on Gender Representation in Majoritarian Bargaining
DESCRIPTION:Women are underrepresented in business\, academic\, and political decision-making bodies across the world. To investigate the causal effect of gender representation on multilateral negotiations\, we experimentally manipulate the composition of triads in a majoritarian\, divide-the-dollar game. We document a robust gender gap in earnings\, driven largely by the exclusion of women from alliances rather than differential shares within alliances. Experiments with different subject pools show that distinct bargaining dynamics can underlie the same inequitable outcomes: While gender-biased outcomes can be caused by outright discrimination\, they can also be driven by more complex dynamics related to differences in bargaining strategies. We identify two fundamental gender differences in bargaining dynamics. First\, men are more likely to make opening offers and enjoy a payoff advantage for doing so\, yet women that propose first do not and may even suffer backlash. Second\, mixed-gender alliances are less stable when the excluded party is male rather than female. These findings show that there is no \"one-size-fits-all'' solution to the gender gap we uncovered and highlight the importance of studying bargaining dynamics in detail.

SUMMARY:Performance:Tony Furtado - Canceled
DESCRIPTION:New music from a roots instrumental master\n \nTony Furtado's banjo and slide guitar range over the entire landscape of American roots music. He puts together traditional string styles\, blues\, and rock into fusions that have a haunting quality yet seem perfectly natural. Equally at home as a solo act or as a collaborator\, Tony has played with musicians as diverse as Alison Krauss\, David Grisman\, Galactic\, Leftover Salmon\, and Widespread Panic. Lately he has focused his energy on songwriting. Says Paste: \"He mixes bluegrass roots with a mainstream pop streak\, easily holding the spotlight\, thanks to his restrained virtuosity on acoustic and slide guitar and a warmly engaging voice reminiscent of T Bone Burnett\, sans preachiness.\" All the music of America is in Tony Furtado's music\, and Relix hit the nail on the head when writing of Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories.\" Tony comes to town with a new release\, \"Decembering\,” and it’s been too long since we’ve heard what he’s been up to creatively!\n\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3997/3998 for more detail.
