She played clarinet\, wrote songs on piano\, later taught herself to play guitar in college\, got obsessed with Shawn Colvin\, was a vegetarian for four years\, ended that with a hot dog and a swim in Lake Michigan\, started a band in Portland\, Oregon with her friend Mark\, named it Hummingfish\, wrote a lot of fun songs that people danced to ‘til they were all sweaty in that hipster/grungy/geeky Northwest kind of way. \nThen\, she moved back to the East Coast six years and a divorce later and began playing solo in Boston coffee houses (read: four different Starbucks that she also poured espresso at)\, opened shows for Catie Curtis (a songwriter hero of hers)\, met up with Steve Tannen and formed The Weepies\, played shows all over the country and the world\, toured in a real tourbus!\nShe moved to L.A.\, got married to Steve\, made five records and three amazing children together with him\, had songs placed in loads of movies and TV shows\, moved to Iowa\, got breast cancer\, got chemotherapy and relied heavily on marijuana for pain and nausea relief (Legalize\, for gods’ sakes\, can we grow up as a country\, please?)\, recovered from breast cancer\, made a solo album\, struggled with mental health issues (Childhood Incest Survivor\, music has helped\, and so have many blessed healers) and relationship issues for six years\, got divorced from Steve.\nShe has a lot she could say these days. She prefers to listen. But playing songs for people is a close second. Music heals. Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. In spite of this\, considerable variation exists in how postcolonial states situate their colonial histories within national narratives. Some states frame their colonial experience negatively\, denouncing their former colonizers and highlighting anticolonialism as inherent to nationalism. Yet other states highlight the positive elements of colonial rule\, valorizing imperial institutions and situating their national identity in continuity with the colonial past. We argue that the way independence was achieved explains this variation: Countries that achieved independence through conflict developed negative frames denouncing their colonial past\, while countries that achieved independence through peaceful transition developed positive frames valorizing their former colonizers. His work is part of a larger effort in NASA to accelerate the qualification and certification of additively manufactured parts via computational materials tools and technologies.\n\nThe use of in-situ process monitoring is of interest to lower the cost of inspection for the qualification of powder bed fusion laser beam metal (PBF-LB/M) additively manufactured (AM) parts. Precise monitoring of the PBF-LB/M AM build process constitutes a multi-scale and multi-discipline task. There are several significant challenges to the in-situ approach: the synchronization of sensor signals to process steps\; the physical interpretation and classification of sensor signals\; managing very large datasets\; and comparing the inputs with the observed monitoring signals. At NASA Langley Research Center\, a configurable architecture additive testbed has been developed to monitor the build process with synchronized sensors. The philosophy and method adopted for the synchronization of the cameras with laser power and position throughout a complex PBF-LB/M AM build will be described. The synchronized in-situ monitoring signals are compared with ex-situ nondestructive inspection\, x-ray computed tomography (XCT). Such comparisons permit a better understanding of how the sequential process actions of LPBF-AM can affect build quality. \n\nThe multi-scale and complex process of printing additively manufactured (AM) parts can have unexpected\, but predictable\, build conditions that result in material microstructure variability. This presentation will describe an additive manufacturing model-based process metric (AM-PM) computational method that is a fully parallel reduced order modeling approach developed to evaluate the evolution of AM processes. This method couples the known sequence of the AM process with a physically informed nearest neighbors’ calculation to map the conditions of a part-scale build. The result is a map of the build that is derived directly from build files or in-situ process monitoring sensors. The methodology of the approach will be described and mapped to the porosity observed from XCT for a complex PBF-LB/M build. Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University.
