Featuring work by Gina Gibson, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology, geology and engineering.

Gina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new, the light and dark, and the known and unknown.

UN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

Shakespeare in the Arb returns for its 21st season with the beloved comedy, Much Ado About Nothing. In this play, Beatrice and Benedick quarrel non-stop but their friends suspect there’s more to their fiery words than it seems. Meanwhile, the marriage of the young lovers Hero and Claudio is interrupted by the schemes of the villainous Don John, and it may be up to the bumbling constable, Dogberry, and his crew to set things right.

Shakespeare in the Arb performs every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from June 1 through June 25. It is a 2.5 hour outdoor, moving performance that takes place within Nichols Arboretum. Audience members should be prepared for light weather conditions, periods of sitting, standing, and walking. All tickets are lawn seating and bringing a chair or blanket to sit on is recommended.

A folk-rock diva

Athens, Georgia, native turned New Orleans folk-rock diva Lilli Lewis is a powerhouse composer and performing artist with “storytelling with transformative empathy and classically trained poise,” says Jewly Hight of NPR. Lilli is a voice for the voiceless on “Americana,” her third full album for Louisiana Red Hot Records, and it’s been lauded by NPR, Rolling Stone, Offbeat magazine and the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “One of the most powerful records of 2021, Lilli Lewis' “Americana” offers up 13 tracks of raw, unfiltered talent… jaw-dropping vocal stylings, sharp lyricism, irresistible hooks and a needed perspective that's often overlooked,” writes Lorie Leibig of The Boot. Since we last saw Lilli at The Ark, she’s appeared at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and other major venues. She’s a star in the making!

Portraits of Feminism in Japan (June 5, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818723@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, June 5, 2023 9:00am
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.

This exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of "feminism" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration.

“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.

Online Arabic placement test_June 5, 2023 (11:30am-3pm-EST) (June 5, 2023 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/108285 108285-21819214@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, June 5, 2023 11:30am
Location: Zoom
Organized By: Sessions @ Michigan

Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.
How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student, please sign up to take the in-person placement test.* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement.* Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101, 201, 401, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester, and Arabic 102, 202, 402, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102, combined), Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer term.About the UM Arabic programUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand either the Egyptian dialect or the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to learning to read and write and understand formal Arabic (fuSHa). Students starting to learn Arabic, if they have no background in Arabic, can choose to take either dialect or can switch their dialect focus from one semester to the next. The dialect focus of each class section is indicated in the schedule of classes. If you have questions regarding the placement test, please contact the program director at, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu

Location: William Clements Library
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

As we celebrate the library’s centennial, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.

It builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

Portraits of Feminism in Japan (June 6, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818724@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, June 6, 2023 9:00am

Location: Off Campus Location

Separation or divorce is difficult to handle in general — when children are in the mix, it becomes that much more complex. Many parents are concerned about the well-being of their children during this time of change. This University Center for the Child and Family workshop delivers practical parenting advice in a collaborative, caring environment for those going through change. We help parents understand their children’s needs during the transition and offer specific suggestions for creating the most beneficial post-divorce parenting relationships.

The program is an approved alternative to the SMILE Program by the Friend of the Court.

What to Expect
+ Practical, actionable advice for couples going through a temporary or permanent split.
+ A caring and collaborative environment for attendees facilitated by UCCF staff members.
+ Guidance to help parents understand their children’s needs during what can be a tumultuous time of change and uncertainty.
+A certificate of participation once the workshop is over.

While it is free, workshop participants must register via Eventbrite. You will be provided the link once your registration is confirmed.

Portraits of Feminism in Japan (June 7, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818725@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, June 7, 2023 9:00am

Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Spectrum Center

Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action is a 6-hour workshop developed by the University of Michigan Spectrum Center. This workshop aims to deepen our UM community's understanding of, and ability to engage with, LGBTQIA2S+ allyship. In Towards Solidarity, we move beyond basic conceptualizations of allyship and challenge participants to center liberation as they show up actively for LGBTQ+ communities. Learning outcomes include:

Through their participation in this program, participants will:

Develop their understanding of LGBTQIA2S+ allyship away from “ally” as an identity term and toward solidarity, a developmental, intersectional, and active set of practices;
Increase self-awareness to more effectively be in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities;
Gain knowledge about how LGBTQ+ oppression operates on multiple levels
Identify inclusive practices, skills, and resources to support LGBTQ+ communities, particularly at U-M;
Commit to the practice of allyship and showing up in solidarity in their personal and professional lives

In this public offering of our workshop, lunch will be provided. We expect that all participants to complete our 1-hour webcourse prior to joining Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action.

UN/EARTH (June 7, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105121 105121-21810903@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, June 7, 2023 10:00am
Location: Museum of Natural History
Organized By: Museum of Natural History

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration, the program recognizes the creativity, rigor, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.
In the of fall of 2022, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications, a record number for the program.
A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay, President & CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art, Shannon Rae Stratton, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists' Residency, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021).

Meet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:
Bakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques, including hyperrealism, baroque, and veristic surrealism, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint, graphite, film photography, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist, curator, educator, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art & Architecture University (Tehran, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume, artifact, ritual, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice, hybridity, and magic.
Durden, Ghaderi, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29, 2023. They will receive financial, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery.
The jury will select a winner, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29, 2023. The winning artist will be awarded a $5,000 cash prize.
If you have further questions, please contact stamps-gallery@umich.edu.

Portraits of Feminism in Japan (June 8, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818726@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 8, 2023 9:00am

Location: Museum of Natural History
Organized By: Museum of Natural History

Online Arabic placement test_June 8 (11:30am-3:00pm EST), 2023 (June 8, 2023 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/108432 108432-21819585@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, June 8, 2023 11:30am
Location: Zoom-Canvas

The Assumptions of Physics project seeks to find a minimal set of physical assumptions from which the basic laws of physics can be rigorously rederived. It consists of two complementary approaches. The first, Reverse Physics, analyzes known theories to identify those physical principles and assumptions that can be taken as their conceptual foundation. The second, Physical Mathematics, seeks to identify and construct mathematical structures that can be rigorously justified from physical requirements and are therefore physically significant. Results from both approaches will be presented, as well as future plans and opportunities to contribute.

Portraits of Feminism in Japan (June 9, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103305 103305-21818727@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, June 9, 2023 9:00am

Heartfulness Guided Meditation (June 9, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88544 88544-21803337@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, June 9, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly, drop-in program designed to help you nourish your spirit and heal your body and mind.

All U-M students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required.

Advanced Wellness techniques are taught on the first Friday of the Month and that session will be about 45 mins.

*What will you learn?*

The guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation, rejuvenation, and meditation.

Relaxation brings your body to a calm, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice.

*Why Meditate?*

While physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony.

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: University Library

Join us for an Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival pre-conference for librarians, educators, and cartoonists!

Learn from some of the most talented graphic novelists working today. Whether you’re an aspiring artist or simply curious about the creative process, join us for an afternoon of exploration and enlightenment as we uncover the power of personal narrative in graphic novels.

1:00 pm to 1:50 pm: Comics Out of Life: Writing With Our Own Voices

How does a graphic novelist discover their own truth and find a unique voice to express that truth through their work? What process do cartoonists follow as they sift through their personal histories, open a dialogue with their earlier selves, and engage emotionally-charged events from their pasts?

Author, editor and critic Irene Velentzas moderates a discussion with celebrated comics creators Jen Wang (Stargazing, The Prince and the Dressmaker), Gale Galligan (The Baby-Sitters Club series, Freestyle), and Dan Santat (A First Time for Everything, The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend). They’ll talk about their own creative journeys and the ways life becomes art.

2:00 pm to 2: 50 pm: Comics Out of Life: Conversations With Our Past

How do graphic novelists combine the stories of their lives with the political events that shaped them, and turn those into a compelling narrative? What does it take to reflect on highly personal experiences and connect them to larger societal issues? And how does all of that get reshaped into impactful works of art?

Moderator Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Drama) leads a thought-provoking discussion with Thien Pham (Family Style) and Nate Powell (Save it For Later, the March trilogy). They’ll explore the art of expressing personal stories that never lose sight of their context within the wider forces of the world. (Raina Telgemeier will not be available for signings after the discussion.)

Sponsored by: University of Michigan Library (Computer & Video Game Archive); Ann Arbor District Library; Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum; Kids Read Comics.

New music from Toronto’s fearless rock explorers

Glam and sleaze, desert grit and subway rats, scumbags and fakers, hot messes and cold shoulders: welcome to the world of Whitehorse, a rock duo from Toronto. Whitehorse's brazen sonic breadth encompasses psychedelic surf, arid border rock, lo-fi ingenuity and icy 80s sparseness. Luke Doucet's Gretsch White Falcon and impeccable tone, combined with Melissa McClelland's blazing vocals and badass P-Bass playing, have made the duo's sound is unmistakably, inventively one of a kind. The duo's songwriting is distinguished by its cinematic fiction, full of flawed characters, foiled plans, and anti-fairytales that transform real life into sleek, stylized collages of neo-noir drama and high-gloss. Whitehorse comes to Michigan with a new album, “I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying.”
