Funds raised will benefit the University of Michigan Aphasia Program (UMAP)\, specifically\, our mental health fund created in 2023.\n\nWho: Anyone!\nWhat: 5K virtual event (3.1 miles)\nWhen: June 2023 (June 1 – June 30)\nWhere: Your choice! Run\, walk or roll this race wherever you’d like. This is a virtual event.\nCost: Free!\n\nThe objective of the Aphasia Warrior Dash to bring about awareness of aphasia — the communication disorder that affects more than 2 million people in North America. The race is set for the entire month of June\, which is Aphasia Awareness Month. UMAP also continues to raise funds to increase both access to resources and develop awareness efforts. That includes resources such as mental health support for people with aphasia and campaigning to help people understand this common-yet-invisible disorder.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. Meanwhile\, the marriage of the young lovers Hero and Claudio is interrupted by the schemes of the villainous Don John\, and it may be up to the bumbling constable\, Dogberry\, and his crew to set things right.\n\nShakespeare in the Arb performs every Thursday\, Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday from June 1 through June 25. DESCRIPTION:Featuring former Ann Arborite Lucciana Costa\n \nKing Margo is Lucciana Costa and Rachel Coats\, who grew up 40 minutes apart but didn't meet until many years later in the middle of a Kentucky field. Lucciana grew up in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, discovering the slide guitar at 12 years old\, which led to her playing in several local bands throughout her teens. Rachel\, from Toledo\, Ohio\, also cut her teeth on the local gig scene with her musically inclined family. Both women spent their 20s building a steady rotation of live shows\, studio work and a gun-for-hire reputation as multi-instrumentalists. Rachel was selected to join several international touring artists in the folk-pop realm on bass and vocals. Lucciana focused on songwriting and composition\, spending half a decade in Los Angeles honing her craft and scoring films and commercials. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.\nHow is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test.* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement.* Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special Quantitative Biology Seminar | From Interfacial Tubulation in Alcanivorax Borkumensis Biofilms to Buckling of Liquid-Crystal Membranes
DESCRIPTION:Anisotropic cells can exhibit long-range orientational order and topological defects\, which often influence their dynamics during shape formation. In the first part of this talk\, I will present conditions for a morphological transition between a spherical and a dendritic phase in Alcanivorax borkumensis biofilm-covered oil microdroplets. Using phase-field approaches\, we studied how tubulation dynamics on 2d liquid-liquid interfaces are modified by bacteria proliferation with an homeostatic state. Experimental observations demonstrate preferential interfacial tubulation at topological defects\, with bacterial assemblies on the tubes exhibiting long-range nematic order. The second part of this talk focuses on the impact of explicit order-curvature couplings on the buckling of liquid-crystal membranes at integer topological defects. We identified conditions that lead to the instability of flat membranes\, highlighting the profound influence of order-curvature coupling. These results show how bacteria biofilms can utilize topological defects to facilitate membrane deformation and enhance oil access.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

The contextual history of the various mediums used\; clay\, fiber\, mycelium\, carries an accumulation of associations and existing discourses. By bringing together these potent mediums\, the artist creates an opportunity to explore a “third space” through the particularity of their own experiences. Metaphors form in the production of objects and things\, new arrangements produce additional spaces which can only exist in this form within the specific circumstances.\nWe place these materials in situations and contexts so that they might be reframed and repurposed to offer a deepening or a shift in subjectivity. The multi-ness of the whole thing creates space for forms meant to turn us inwards or into each other. Through their work with the materials\, each artist creates their own metrics\, for positioning and understanding themselves in corporeal\, ecological\, digital\, ephemeral relationships. Our language is porous and so are we. This space between things\, this absence between atoms is spilling over with magic and potentiality.

DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

The contextual history of the various mediums used\; clay\, fiber\, mycelium\, carries an accumulation of associations and existing discourses. By bringing together these potent mediums\, the artist creates an opportunity to explore a “third space” through the particularity of their own experiences. Metaphors form in the production of objects and things\, new arrangements produce additional spaces which can only exist in this form within the specific circumstances.\nWe place these materials in situations and contexts so that they might be reframed and repurposed to offer a deepening or a shift in subjectivity. The multi-ness of the whole thing creates space for forms meant to turn us inwards or into each other. Through their work with the materials\, each artist creates their own metrics\, for positioning and understanding themselves in corporeal\, ecological\, digital\, ephemeral relationships. Our language is porous and so are we. This space between things\, this absence between atoms is spilling over with magic and potentiality.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker:\nDipak Kalra\, PhD\, FRCGP\, FACMI\, FBCS\nPresident\, The European Institute for Innovation through Health Data\nProfessor of Health Informatics\, UCL and Visiting Professor\, University of Gant\nOne of the strongest drivers for Learning Health Systems in Europe right now is the urgency to strengthen health systems resilience through accelerated digital health transformation. This is a direct reaction to the struggles all of our health systems had during the COVID-19 pandemic.\nUp to now digital health innovation has occurred in a rather piecemeal way\, often through pilots that fail to scale up or be sustained. There is a real gap in the understanding of how digital health solutions\, especially patient empowerment for disease self-management through smart technical solutions\, can be appropriately targeted to the right patients\, influence care pathways in an efficient and safe way\, become culturally embraced by clinical teams and accountably adopted by healthcare provider organizations. There are several initiatives and opportunities in progress in Europe to accelerate the adoption of digital health technologies and to support the dissemination of good practices\, which will be discussed during this talk.\nIn parallel\, equally urgent\, is the recognition that health data must be better used to support learning at scale\, for example to be better prepared to gather intelligence rapidly as a lesson learned from the COVID-19 pandemic\, and the need to accelerate research that can deliver innovative treatments\, devices and algorithms. Many European countries have embarked upon establishing a national or regional health data infrastructure and ecosystem that enables the reuse of data for research. Most exciting of all\, the European Commission has announced a multibillion program to establish a European Health Data Space (EHDS). An important success factor for this will be public trust\, and therefore getting the governance model right for wide scale data reuse is critical. This talk will explain the approaches being taken across Europe to scale up the ability to analyze large volumes of health data\, including its governance\, and how the EHDS is anticipated to catalyze a step change in that scale of learning from health data.

DESCRIPTION:Leslie Sobel\, a mixed media environmental artist from Ann Arbor\, is an artist in residence in June at the U-M Biological Station\, an 11\,000-acre research and teaching campus just south of the Mackinac Bridge on Douglas Lake. She connects climate\, water and data through art. Her lecture as part of the 2023 Summer Lecture Series is titled\, “Artist in the Wilderness: Field Work and Art Making.”

DESCRIPTION:An infectious blend of rock\, pop\, and folk from a two-man Tucson band\n\nNamed Best Group/Duo at the International Acoustic Music Awards\, acoustic-duo Ryanhood got their first break more than a decade ago as street-performers at Boston’s Quincy Market. They’ve since gone on to perform more than a thousand shows in 46 U.S. states over the past decade\, and have shared stages with Jason Mraz\, Matt Nathanson\, Train\, and many more. And\, their star is still on the rise. Ryanhood was recently named the “Discovery of the Year” by John Platt at WFUV in New York City\, and was a featured act at Australia’s National Folk Festival in 2018. \nTheir latest album\, “Under the Leaves\,” is driven by strong acoustic guitar performances and is at turns energetic\, hopeful\, and quietly moving—a musical invitation to breathe\, and to soak in a river of melodies and harmonic hooks. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Using the Arts to Flip Understanding Facilitated by Margot Greenlee\n\n\nWhen you’re on a mental “hamster wheel\,” running faster doesn’t help. Slowing down\, stepping to the side\, and seeing from another perspective does.\nIn our time as graduate students and postdocs\, we may find ourselves feeling burnt out on the very work that got us excited about this journey in the first place\, or feeling stuck in our thinking about where it’s all going. To get out of this rut\, we need to try new perspectives and approaches. In this workshop\, we use arts-based activities to open up new neural pathways. We refresh our thinking and jumpstart inspiration with visual art\, poetic language\, and movement. DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

The contextual history of the various mediums used\; clay\, fiber\, mycelium\, carries an accumulation of associations and existing discourses. By bringing together these potent mediums\, the artist creates an opportunity to explore a “third space” through the particularity of their own experiences. Metaphors form in the production of objects and things\, new arrangements produce additional spaces which can only exist in this form within the specific circumstances.\nWe place these materials in situations and contexts so that they might be reframed and repurposed to offer a deepening or a shift in subjectivity. The multi-ness of the whole thing creates space for forms meant to turn us inwards or into each other. Through their work with the materials\, each artist creates their own metrics\, for positioning and understanding themselves in corporeal\, ecological\, digital\, ephemeral relationships. Our language is porous and so are we. This space between things\, this absence between atoms is spilling over with magic and potentiality.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Physics Graduate Student Symposium (PGSS) | Exploring Biophysics using the toolbox of Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics
DESCRIPTION:The development of Thermodynamics was a stepping-stone to understanding the properties of complex systems\, allowing to constrain which types of processes are physically realizable. However\, classical Thermodynamics does not describe nonequilibrium systems\, which represent a large range of phenomena observed in nature\, including life itself. Examples range from the transport of cargo by molecular motors and gene transcription\, to bacterial chemotaxis and beyond. Achieving a unified theoretical description of all such processes is challenging\, and in the last years\, physicists have teamed with biologists to apply the tools of Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics to study such phenomena. In this talk\, I will provide a gentle introduction to Stochastic Thermodynamics\, a field of Nonequilibrium thermodynamics. Special focus will be given to Markov-jump processes and its direct applications to describing biophysical systems. I will finish by showing how this toolbox can be used to derive fundamental operational limits of a general biochemical motif consisting of a ligand binding to a receptor.

DESCRIPTION:Join Information and Technology Services (ITS) in welcoming Joaquin Chung to campus for a presentation on Quantum Networking\, cutting-edge research\, and one of the future technologies in campus network computing. This will be a very technical presentation geared for researchers and technologists.\n\nChung is a research scientist at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory who is working on the Illinois Express Quantum Metropolitan Area Network (IE QMAN). The IE QMAN is a functioning test bed that supports the transmission of quantum network traffic over existing dark fiber networks. This talk will describe details around the network control and physics involved in quantum data transmission.\n\nSpecial Invitation:\nJoaquin Chung will be available to chat with U-M researchers Thursday and Friday mornings during his time in Ann Arbor. DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2023 Summer Lecture Series\, Ross Ellet\, a meteorologist at the ABC affiliate in Toledo\, Ohio\, and a space weather expert\, will discuss geomagnetic storms\, aurora borealis and how to best photograph the Northern Lights\, even if you only have an iPhone\, at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, an 11\,000-acre research and teaching campus just south of the Mackinac Bridge on Douglas Lake. Ellet produces a weekly segment called “Spacing Out” that focuses on night sky highlights and publishes a weekly Great Lakes aurora forecast each Thursday. An aurora chaser\, Ross has traveled to the arctic of Alaska and a variety of locations in northern Michigan\, southern Canada and northern Manitoba to photograph the Northern Lights.

DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

The contextual history of the various mediums used\; clay\, fiber\, mycelium\, carries an accumulation of associations and existing discourses. By bringing together these potent mediums\, the artist creates an opportunity to explore a “third space” through the particularity of their own experiences. Metaphors form in the production of objects and things\, new arrangements produce additional spaces which can only exist in this form within the specific circumstances.\nWe place these materials in situations and contexts so that they might be reframed and repurposed to offer a deepening or a shift in subjectivity. The multi-ness of the whole thing creates space for forms meant to turn us inwards or into each other. Through their work with the materials\, each artist creates their own metrics\, for positioning and understanding themselves in corporeal\, ecological\, digital\, ephemeral relationships. Our language is porous and so are we. This space between things\, this absence between atoms is spilling over with magic and potentiality.

DESCRIPTION:“Incredible guitar player\, incredible singer”—Adam Levine\, Maroon 5\n \nLaith Al-Saadi began singing at age four and began playing guitar at 13. At 15 he formed his first blues band\, Blue Vinyl. In short order they opened for blues greats like Buddy Guy (to whose work his playing has been compared)\, Luther Allison\, Son Seals\, and Taj Mahal and toured the Netherlands. At the University of Michigan\, Laith was a member of the Johnny Trudell Orchestra and freelanced with Detroit greats like Thornetta Davis\, Jocelyn B\, The Reefermen. Open houses involve presentations on a range of fascinating astronomical phenomena\, instruction on the telescopes\, and\, when weather permits\, observing with our beautiful historic Fitz telescope as well as modern supplemental telescopes.\n\nJune Telescope Sights: Venus\, Globular Cluster M13\, Spica\n\nPlease note: astronomy events at the Observatory take place even if the weather does not permit observing. We offer unique tour and telescope demos when we can't observe the night sky. Tickets are required\, and open house registrations are capped at 100 guests. You can arrive anytime from 8:30 pm to 10 pm. You will be given a time slot for visiting the dome. While you are waiting\, check out other features and presentations.
