SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

The contextual history of the various mediums used\; clay\, fiber\, mycelium\, carries an accumulation of associations and existing discourses. By bringing together these potent mediums\, the artist creates an opportunity to explore a “third space” through the particularity of their own experiences. Metaphors form in the production of objects and things\, new arrangements produce additional spaces which can only exist in this form within the specific circumstances.\nWe place these materials in situations and contexts so that they might be reframed and repurposed to offer a deepening or a shift in subjectivity. The multi-ness of the whole thing creates space for forms meant to turn us inwards or into each other. Through their work with the materials\, each artist creates their own metrics\, for positioning and understanding themselves in corporeal\, ecological\, digital\, ephemeral relationships. Our language is porous and so are we. This space between things\, this absence between atoms is spilling over with magic and potentiality.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Physics Graduate Student Symposium (PGSS) | Solitons: An Unexpected Journey Through First-Year Graduate Level Physics
DESCRIPTION:Over the last half-century\, there has been increased interest in many integrable nonlinear evolution equations\, such as the Nonlinear Schrodinger\, Sine-Gordon\, Korteweg-de Vries\, and Benjamin-Ono equations\, due to their ubiquity in describing physical systems exhibiting weakly nonlinear and dispersive behavior along with the remarkable fact that all of these equations have the same qualitative solution method\, generally known as an Inverse Scattering Transform. A peculiar phenomenon also shared by many of these equations has to do with a particular set of solutions known as solitons\, which have a distinctly particle-like behavior: a spatially localized profile propagating at a fixed speed when alone\, obeying a \"nonlinear superposition principle\" so many individual solitons can be present in a solution at once\, and maintaining their individual identities after interacting. In order to demystify these peculiar solutions\, we'll embark on a mathematical journey that will take us to some unexpected places. To survive\, you'll need your wits about you\, specifically\, most of your knowledge from your first-year graduate physics courses. You have been warned!

DESCRIPTION:The king of zydeco!\n\nWe’ve had several protégés of the great CJ Chenier at The Ark\, including Sonny Landreth (the first white member of his band) and Stanley “Buckwhat” Dural. So we thought it was time to go to the source. Clayton Joseph  (CJ) Chenier was born September 28\, 1957. He’s the son of  the great King of Zydeco\, Clifton Chenier\,  the first Creole musician to win a Grammy Award. CJ spent his childhood in the tough tenement housing projects of Port Arthur\, Texas. His earliest musical influences were an eclectic mix of funk\, soul\, jazz\, and Motown\, and his first musical instruments were piano\, tenor saxophone and flute. It wasn't until his 21st birthday\, after winning a scholarship and studying music at Texas Southern University\, that CJ first performed with his famous father and the legendary Red Hot Louisiana band. When Clifton died in 1987\, his son said it only felt natural to carry on the legacy—and he stepped up to lead the Red Hot Louisiana Band.  He recorded his debut album for the great American independent label\, Arhoolie Records. As he told a journalist at the time\, he does not try to imitate his father's playing: \"I play it the way I play it. All my father really told me was to do the best I could do with my own style.\" Today\, CJ continues to record and rack up honors and awards. This year\, he is being honored along with his late friend\, Clifford Antone\, in Port Arthur’s acclaimed Museum of the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame\, where he will join the likes of Janis Joplin\, Tex Ritter\, Percy Sledge\, George Jones\,  Marcia Ball\, Johnny Winter\, The Big Bopper\, ZZ Top and\, of course\, his father\, Clifton Chenier.\n\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4001/4002 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

The contextual history of the various mediums used\; clay\, fiber\, mycelium\, carries an accumulation of associations and existing discourses. By bringing together these potent mediums\, the artist creates an opportunity to explore a “third space” through the particularity of their own experiences. Metaphors form in the production of objects and things\, new arrangements produce additional spaces which can only exist in this form within the specific circumstances.\nWe place these materials in situations and contexts so that they might be reframed and repurposed to offer a deepening or a shift in subjectivity. The multi-ness of the whole thing creates space for forms meant to turn us inwards or into each other. Through their work with the materials\, each artist creates their own metrics\, for positioning and understanding themselves in corporeal\, ecological\, digital\, ephemeral relationships. Our language is porous and so are we. This space between things\, this absence between atoms is spilling over with magic and potentiality.

DESCRIPTION:The Romantic Life at U of M Walking Tour takes you through some of the beautiful and notable portions of the Nichols Arboretum starting at the Peony Garden\, as well as a few of the dorms surrounding the Detroit Observatory\, where the tour ends. While you learn about the history surrounding these spots\, you will also get to hear some stories of the romantic lives of some of our faculty\, students\, and alumni\, as well as some other historical facts about events and lives here at the University of Michigan campus\, with an accompanying slideshow filled with photos\, scrapbook pages\, and letters.\n\nThe tour is about 1.5 hours long with a total of a 1.3 mile walk. It should be noted that a portion of the walking tour has a steep hill\, though there are stairs at the steepest section. The Astronomers of U-M's Detroit Observatory were responsible for the discovery and study of many asteroids in our solar system and we are lucky to still have the telescopes and scientific instruments that helped them complete this work. Join us Friday\, June 30 for a talks and presentations around our history with asteroids\, along with demos of our beautiful 19th century telescopes. We will also be showing images of asteroids and comets taken through our historic Fitz telescope. If weather permits\, we will also include night sky observing through our telescopes.\n\nSeeing in Depth programs are a chance to take a closer look at some of the people\, places\, and sciences from the observatory's history. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. Produced by Eli Paperboy Reed\, “Look Up!” marks the group’s first full-length release as a trio\, as well as their first collection of totally original material\, and it couldn’t have come at a more vital moment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Understanding Individuality in Human Locomotion for Configuring Powered Prosthetic Legs
DESCRIPTION:The development of powered prosthetic legs has the potential to improve the mobility and quality of life for the amputee population. The proliferation of research in this field promises that we will have not only agile robotic legs in the near future\, but also devices that can seamlessly integrate into our daily life–to smoothly react to all the different terrains and activities that we encounter every day. Although the field has shown great progress on all fronts since the original research devices\, there are still a number of hurdles before we reach devices like those we see in science fiction. \n\nThis research centers around improving the clinical viability of powered prostheses\, specifically the biomechanical grounding and control methodology of clinically implementing a powered prosthetic leg for an individual. This research breaks that problem down into four main sections: dataset development\, individual trend identification\, individualized modeling\, and experimental validation. First\, we present the development of a multi-modal\, able-bodied dataset designed to comprehensively present the movement patterns of multiple activities of daily living and the potential nuances within each activity. Then\, the dataset is investigated to identify trends in how individuals tackle a wide range of tasks. Next\, leveraging these trends\, we can quickly and efficiently model the kinematics and kinetics of an able-bodied person with an eye towards designing individualized kinematic and impedance controllers for powered prosthetic legs. Lastly\, we discuss the development and experimental validation of a clinical tuning interface that allows a prosthetist to tune complex\, multi-terrain controllers without the assistance of an engineer. This work is the first to clinically interface with continuous hybrid kinematic impedance control\, successfully individualizing a powered prosthesis in a clinically relevant and viable way. \n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99362898964

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.
