DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. Join us for a kid-friendly tour of the Kelsey Museum at this month’s “Read and Look”! We will begin by reading aloud *The Museum*\, then explore the galleries to find art and artifacts that make us want to sing\, feel\, dance\, think\, create\, and connect with the people of the past. Take home a booklet of activities and coloring pages for further discovery. This tour is great for our younger visitors\, ages 4–8. DESCRIPTION:Timeless sounds\, reinvented for a troubled present\n\n“When everything was stripped away\, all we had left was the music\,” says singer Thomas Gatling. “Difficult as it was\, we realized that God was opening a door\, and it was up to us to walk on through to the other side.” It’s on the other side that we meet a transformed Harlem Gospel Travelers\, complete with a new album\, a new lineup\, and a new lease on life. Produced by Eli Paperboy Reed\, “Look Up!” marks the group’s first full-length release as a trio\, as well as their first collection of totally original material\, and it couldn’t have come at a more vital moment. The music still draws deeply on the gospel quartet tradition of the ’50s and ’60s\, of course\, but there’s a distinctly modern edge to the record\, an unmistakable reflection of the tumultuous past few years of pandemic anxiety\, political chaos\, and social unrest. The songs here are bold and resilient\, facing down doubt and despair with faith and perseverance\, and the performances are explosive and ecstatic\, fueled by dazzling vocal arrangements punctuated with gritty bursts of guitar and crunchy rhythm breaks. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Understanding Individuality in Human Locomotion for Configuring Powered Prosthetic Legs
DESCRIPTION:The development of powered prosthetic legs has the potential to improve the mobility and quality of life for the amputee population. The proliferation of research in this field promises that we will have not only agile robotic legs in the near future\, but also devices that can seamlessly integrate into our daily life–to smoothly react to all the different terrains and activities that we encounter every day. Although the field has shown great progress on all fronts since the original research devices\, there are still a number of hurdles before we reach devices like those we see in science fiction. \n\nThis research centers around improving the clinical viability of powered prostheses\, specifically the biomechanical grounding and control methodology of clinically implementing a powered prosthetic leg for an individual. This research breaks that problem down into four main sections: dataset development\, individual trend identification\, individualized modeling\, and experimental validation. First\, we present the development of a multi-modal\, able-bodied dataset designed to comprehensively present the movement patterns of multiple activities of daily living and the potential nuances within each activity. Then\, the dataset is investigated to identify trends in how individuals tackle a wide range of tasks. Next\, leveraging these trends\, we can quickly and efficiently model the kinematics and kinetics of an able-bodied person with an eye towards designing individualized kinematic and impedance controllers for powered prosthetic legs. Lastly\, we discuss the development and experimental validation of a clinical tuning interface that allows a prosthetist to tune complex\, multi-terrain controllers without the assistance of an engineer. This work is the first to clinically interface with continuous hybrid kinematic impedance control\, successfully individualizing a powered prosthesis in a clinically relevant and viable way. \n\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/99362898964

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test.* Placements are valid for only one year. DESCRIPTION:Renormalization group (RG) flows are commonly used in quantum field theory to describe the changes in degrees of freedom as we \"flow\" from very high to very low energies. In particular\, there have been a number of proofs of the irreversibility of RG flows in various dimensions\, i.e.\, the statement that the number of high-energy degrees of freedom is larger than the number of low-energy degrees of freedom. In this talk\, I will discuss RG flows across dimensions\, which one can think of as probing compact extra dimensions. We will do so using the powerful tool of holography\, which allows us to recast this field theoretic problem as a geometric flow in anti-de Sitter space.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

DESCRIPTION:Avant-grass and Americana from the U.P.!\n\nAni & Kora are Ani Mari and Kora Melia\, a folk duo from Houghton\, Michigan. Old on soul and sharp as a tack\, their music (Ani's lyrics\, lead vocals\, and rhythm guitar combined with Kora's virtuosic fiddle and mandolin playing and backing vocals) is inspired by their upbringing in the Keweenaw Peninsula and the folk\, indie rock\, and Americana music they grew up immersed in\, with pinches of jazz and riot grrrl thrown in for good measure. Ani & Kora have released two full albums and one EP of original music\, and have been playing at Michigan-based venues and music festivals alongside artists such as The Accidentals\, May Erlewine\, Lindsay Lou\, Seth Bernard\, and Joshua Davis since they were 12 years old. Their most recent album\, “Good Fighter\,” was recorded in the Twin Cities with Americana folk and country artist Erik Koskinen. Ani is also a current student at U-M and plays around Ann Arbor with her other band\, Ani Mari & Company.\n\nDead North is an avant-garde bluegrass band from Houghton\, Michigan\, consisting of Luke Pascot on guitar and vocals\; Kora Melia on fiddle\, mandolin\, and vocals\; and Nate Miller on bass and vocals. Inspired by the likes of Tony Rice\, The Grateful Dead\, Billy Strings\, and so many more\, their sound is a psychedelic harmony of bluegrass standards\, jazz improv\, and Appalachian folk.
