Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. All concerts are free and family-friendly.\nThis year’s summer series features artists from across the country and world playing the great 53-bell Charles Baird Carillon in Burton Tower. The carillon is an outdoor instrument\, and attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets\, chairs\, and anything else they’d like to feel comfortable. Concert programs and a carillon coloring book for kids are available from concert staff at or near the tower door. Accessible restrooms are available in the Michigan League.\nThe nearest municipal parking structures are at 324 Maynard and at 510 E Washington. Street parking is limited due to nearby construction.\nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nSimone Browne is a carillonist originally from Tucson\, AZ. She was introduced to the carillon at the University of Chicago\, where she joined its Guild of Carillonneurs and studied with Joey Brink. After graduating in 2019\, Simone spent a year living in Chernivtsi\, Ukraine through the Fulbright program\, teaching English and visiting Ukrainian carillons.\nWith the support of the Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF)\, she studied under Eddy Mariën\, Koen Van Assche\, Tom Van Peer\, and Dina Verheyden at the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen\, Belgium from 2020–2022. She graduated “with great distinction” in June 2021\, then remained at the Carillon School for an additional post-graduation specialization year. In 2023\, she spent several months studying with Geert D’hollander as a Carillon Fellow at Bok Tower Gardens.\n\nSimone researches carillon culture and enjoys learning languages in her spare time. She has performed recitals on carillons in Belgium\, the Netherlands\, Germany\, Norway\, Lithuania\, Denmark\, the US\, and Ukraine. The risk of collisions with such obstacles is likely to increase as Advanced Aerial Mobility and broadening drone activity promises to increase the density of air traffic at low altitudes\, while growing demand for electricity and communication will expand the number of vertical structures. The current ‘see-and-avoid’ detection paradigm relies on pilots to spend much of their visual attention looking outside for obstacles. This method is inadequate in low visibility conditions\, cluttered environments and given the need for pilots to engage in multiple competing visual tasks. With the expected growing number of hazards and an increased traffic volume\, the current approach to collision avoidance will become even less tenable. This thesis contributes to a better understanding of the current limitations of vertical obstacle detection and avoidance. It proposes and assesses modular methods to automatically detect\, catalog\, and categorize hazardous obstacles that are currently neglected\, and it evaluates the effectiveness of current visualization technologies and sensor- and database-informed graphic augmentations for supporting pilots in the timely and reliable detection of towers. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many ­– but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures.
