SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Fair / Festival:BioArtography Booth at the Ann Arbor Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:BioArtography will be in South University Booth SU1103 (Between E. Univ. and Church) the Ann Arbor Art Fair! Spectacular new images for 2023 will be making their debut!\n\nJuly 20 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. (Thu)\nJuly 21 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. (Fri)\nJuly 22 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. (Sat)\n\nEvery day at the University of Michigan\, scientists from many fields work together to study organism development\, function and disease. While the goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world around us\, many are also taking the time to share the beauty of their work with others through a program called BioArtography. In the course of research\, scientists use special stains to add color to the otherwise transparent tissues. Microscopes then allow detailed observation of the tiny\, colorful biological structures revealed in these images. This results in a fascinating combination of art and science that U-M researchers are capturing in pictures taken through microscopes and turning into artworks that would look beautiful on any wall.\n\nThe goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world that surrounds us. Proceeds from the sale of this work help support the training of our next generation of researchers. Past BioArtography sales have raised enough money to send more than 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to scientific conferences\, where they can present their work to other scientists and make connections that can help them launch their careers in research and industry.\n\nThroughout the year BioArtography images (a collection of over 250) can be viewed and ordered online at www.bioartography.com

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Humanize the Numbers
DESCRIPTION:*Humanize the Numbers* presents the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. \n\nThe prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name\, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height\, weight\, etc. In the process\, their humanity is denied.\n\nThis exhibit reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so\, those in prison reclaim their humanity.\n\nProudly presented by Prison Creative Arts Project\, MI Radio\, and The Guild of Artists & Artisans

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Stamps Gallery at the University of Michigan\, Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023 is an exhibition and awards program designed to support the development of contemporary artists living and working in Michigan. In its second iteration\, the program recognizes the creativity\, rigor\, and innovation of Michigan-based artists and collaboratives — and honors their role in inspiring the next generations of artists in our state. This initiative showcases the excellence and artistic merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan.\nIn the of fall of 2022\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. We received 309 applications\, a record number for the program. \n A shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Neil A. Barclay\, President &amp\; CEO of Charles Wright Museum of African American Art\, Shannon Rae Stratton\, Executive Director of Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists&#039\; Residency\, and Nayda Collazo-Llorens\, award-winning artist and winner of the inaugural Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award (2020-2021). \n \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2023:\nBakpak Durden is a “self-taught” multi-hyphenate antidisciplinary artist and alchemist. Pulling from various figurative art techniques\, including hyperrealism\, baroque\, and veristic surrealism\, Durden employs a wide range of mediums—oil and acrylic paint\, graphite\, film photography\, and the written word—to construct their hyper-surrealistic and conceptual works of art. Parisa Ghaderi is a visual artist\, curator\, educator\, and filmmaker. She earned her BA in Visual Communications from Art &amp\; Architecture University (Tehran\, Iran) and her MFA at Stamps School in 2014. She works across different media. She has made four short films and two animations and recently directed a performance about the border situation in the U.S. for Iranian immigrants. Levon Kafafian is a Detroit-based Armenian-American weaver working the narrative threads of costume\, artifact\, ritual\, and installation into stories about possible worlds and potential futures. They infuse their stories and cloth with future ancestral practice\, hybridity\, and magic. \nDurden\, Ghaderi\, and Kafafian will present their work at Stamps Gallery from June 1-July 29\, 2023. They will receive financial\, logistical and curatorial support from the professional staff at Stamps Gallery. \nThe jury will select a winner\, who will be announced at the award ceremony on June 29\, 2023. The winning artist will be awarded a $5\,000 cash prize. \nIf you have further questions\, please contact stamps-gallery@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Online Arabic placement test_July 20 (12pm-2:30pm EST)\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary. How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test.* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement.* Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102\, combined)\, Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer term.About the UM Arabic programUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand either the Egyptian dialect or the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to learning to read and write and understand formal Arabic (fuSHa). Students starting to learn Arabic\, if they have no background in Arabic\, can choose to take either dialect or can switch their dialect focus from one semester to the next. The dialect focus of each class section is indicated in the schedule of classes. If you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Physics Graduate Student Symposium (PGSS) | A Short Guide to Gravitational Wave Cosmology
DESCRIPTION:Gravitational waves have emerged as a new method for measuring the Hubble constant. With recent upgrades to active detectors and future instruments in the works\, this new measurement should soon rival the canonical late and early universe measurements in precision and introduce another facet to the Hubble tension. In this talk\, I'll walk through the current process of how gravitational wave detection and observational astronomy interlace to make multimessenger cosmology. I'll talk about how gravitational waves are used to infer properties of compact object collisions\, how telescopes all over the world are employed to search for a visual signal from the collisions\, and then how these signals are combined to measure cosmological parameters.

DESCRIPTION:Prints of a New Kind details the political strategies and scandals that inspired the first generation of American caricaturists to share news and opinions with their audiences in shockingly radical ways. Complementing studies on British and European printmaking\, this book is a survey and catalogue of all known American political caricatures created in the country’s transformative early years\, as the nation sought to define itself in relation to European models of governance and artistry.\nAllison Stagg is a researcher and lecturer in the Department of Architecture and Art History at the Technical University of Darmstadt\, Germany.\n\nThis event is VIRTUAL\nPlease register here http://myumi.ch/gjgzR

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:More Than 8-Mile
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. For many years it has been debated as to where the most significant contributions to the culture have developed. New York and Los Angeles often are at the forefront of the discussion\, with Atlanta and Houston receiving honorable mentions. Few make mention of Detroit. As a city with many cultural bona fides\, Hip-Hop is a genre Detroit is not “known” for. Yet\, Detroit does have a rich history of contributions to Hip-Hop culture. Join us as we discuss the history and perseverance of Hip-Hop culture in Detroit\, on July 21\, 2023\, at 6:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Learning Structure in High-Dimensional Data with Applications to Neuroimaging
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe scale of modern datasets\, with more and more variables measured on more and more observations\, presents many statistical challenges\, but also opportunities to discover and exploit the rich structure that is often present in the data. In neuroimaging studies\, multiple kinds of brain imaging are conducted on the same participant\, with each modality of imaging having its own further structure\, and many associated phenotypic measurements taken on the participants. Understanding the complicated and noisy underlying relationships between all of these measurements holds promise for scientific and treatment breakthroughs in the long term\, and requires sophisticated methods designed to uncover this structure. This thesis presents three projects on learning structure in high-dimensional datasets motivated by applications in neuroimaging.\n\nThe first project considers the setting where many networks are observed on a common node set: each observation comprises edge weights\, covariates observed at each node\, and a response. In our neuroimaging application\, the edge weights correspond to functional connectivity between brain regions\, node covariates encode task activations at each brain region\, and performance on a behavioral task is the response. The goal is to use the edge weights and node covariates to predict the response and to identify a parsimonious and interpretable set of predictive features. We propose an approach that uses feature groups defined according to a community structure believed to exist in the network (naturally occurring in neuroimaging applications). We propose two schemes for forming feature groups where each group incorporates both edge weights and node covariates\, and derive optimization algorithms for both using an overlapping group LASSO penalty. Empirical results on synthetic data show that our method\, relative to competing approaches\, has similar or improved prediction error along with superior support recovery\, enabling a more interpretable and potentially a more accurate understanding of the underlying process. We also apply the method to neuroimaging data.\n\nThe second project focuses on inference for structure learned using Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). CCA is a method for analyzing a sample of pairs of random vectors\; it learns a sequence of paired linear transformations of the original variables that are maximally correlated within pairs while uncorrelated across pairs. CCA outputs both canonical correlations as well as the canonical directions which define the transformations. While inference for canonical correlations is well developed\, conducting inference for canonical directions is more challenging and not well-studied\, but is key to interpretability. We propose a computational bootstrap method for inference on CCA direction (kombootcca). We conduct thorough simulation studies that range from simple and well-controlled to complex but realistic and validate the statistical properties of kombootcca while comparing it to several competitors. We also apply the kombootcca method to a brain imaging dataset and discover linked patterns in brain connectivity and behavioral scores.\n\nThe third project proposes a new method for matrix CCA (matcca)\, which works with pairs of random matrices rather than pairs of random vectors\, motivated by a neuroimaging application where the brain imaging data takes the form of a high-dimensional covariance matrix. Our matcca method uses a nuclear norm penalty that encourages the canonical directions associated with the matrix-variate data to have low rank structure when arranged into a matrix. Results from both synthetic and neuroimaging data show that matcca is very effective at recovering low rank signals even in noisy cases with few observations.

SUMMARY:Performance:Holly Near
DESCRIPTION:After 50 years of bold work\, Holly Near is still one of the most consistent and well-informed voices for change. Her work is loving\, challenging\, funny\, thought-provoking\, and remains rooted in the global community. As an outspoken singer and ambassador for peace\, Holly brings a unique integration of world consciousness and self-evaluation\, always growing and sharing experiences humbly and boldly.\n\nHolly discovered her unique and recognizable voice at an early age\, learning to sing along with recordings of some of the world’s great singers. After graduating high school\, Holly attended UCLA but her academic journey ended after just a few months when she was spotted by agents and drawn into the world of film and television. She did guest spots on TV shows like The Partridge Family\, Room 222\, All in the Family\, and played supporting roles in films like John Cassavetes’ Minnie and Moskowitz and George Roy Hill’s Slaughterhouse-Five. She moved to New York and performed for a short run in Hair on Broadway but soon turned to singing full\ntime\, as a soloist as well as sharing the stage with her sisters Laurel and Timothy. Throughout her career she has enjoyed collaborations with such artists as Mercedes Sosa\, Ronnie Gilbert\, Inti Illimani\, Emma’s Revolution\, and her long-time songwriting partner\, the late Jeff Langley.\n\nIn her early twenties\, Near traveled with the Free The Army Show and the Indochina Peace Campaign\; an experience that enabled her to learn about the function and consequences of the military-industrial complex. While on the FTA tour in 1971\, Holly was first introduced to the concept of global feminism. By 1974 she was crossing paths and sharing songs with the wave of new lesbian feminist performers such as Meg Christian\, Cris Williamson\, Linda Tillery\, Mary Watkins\, and Alive! Near dove into the feminist movement\, trying to understand the depth of sexism and homophobia by turning those lessons into song.\n\nHolly is known for the anthemic quality of some of her songs. As a songwriter she takes up the challenge of turning big concepts into small\, personal stories. In response to the slaughter of the students at Kent State\, she wrote It Could Have Been Me. And following the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in San Francisco\, she penned Singing For Our Lives\, which has become an anthem for the LGBTQ community and appears in the Unitarian\nChurch hymnal. The chilling disappearance of people in Chile under the Pinochet dictatorship brought forth Hay Una Mujer Desaparecida to commemorate the women who had “been disappeared.”\n\nIn 2019\, Near began a website project called Because of a Song\, an online historic archive that documents some of the influential artists that rose from the feminist lesbian music scene in Oakland\, California. The site can be viewed at www.becauseofasong.com. \n\nA recipient of dozens of awards from organizations such as the ACLU and the National Organization of Women\, Holly was one of Ms. Magazine’s Women of the Year recipients and has been nominated for Grammys as well as the Legends of Women’s Music Award.\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/3869/3870 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Performance:BBMak
DESCRIPTION:The 1990s British boy band returns\n\nBBMak is an English band consisting of Mark Barry\, Christian Burns and Stephen McNally. Formed in Liverpool in 1996\, the group made million-selling albums for seven years\, far longer than the usual run in the boy band genre. BBMak first achieved success when their single \"Back Here\" gained popularity in radio stations in Asia\, and they later signed with Hollywood Records in the U.S. The band reworked their debut album\, “Sooner or Later\,” for an American release in 2000\, and the album charted at number 38 on the Billboard 200 chart with \"Back Here\" becoming a top 20 hit. BBMak's success in the American market helped the band finally break through in their home country. After a 15-year hiatus\, BBMak returned in 2019 with a new album\, “Powerstation.” Relive the 1990s with this hugely tuneful group of the era and see what they sound like all grown up!\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4106/4107 for more detail.
