SUMMARY:Exhibition:Portraits of Feminism in Japan
DESCRIPTION:What is feminism in Japan? Rather than imagining it as a singular\, coherent object\, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity\, difference\, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts\, “feminism” in Japan can invoke sharply different associations\, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority\, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters\, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families\, workplaces\, schools\, political institutions\, and laws\, among many other contexts. Many – but certainly not all – feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects\, working toward recognition\, repair\, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\n\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States\, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences\, needs\, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \n\n“Portraits of Feminism in Japan” is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\n\nFeatured artists:\nElaine Cromie\, JenClare B. Gawaran\, Takatoshi Hayashi\, ivokuma (いぼくま)\, Nami Kaneko (金子奈美)\, Kang Jungsook\, Lisa Taka Miyagi\, Nancy Nishihira (西平・ナンシー)\, and Shigeki Shibata (柴田滋紀)\n\nCuration team: \nAllison Alexy\, Bradly Hammond\, Grace Mahoney\, and Alexandria Molinari

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Physics Graduate Student Symposium (PGSS) | Ultrafast Time-Resolved Spectroscopy Using Optical and X-ray Probes Elucidates the Structural and Electronic Evolution of Photoexcited Coenzyme B12
DESCRIPTION:Coenzyme B12\, also known as adenosylcobalamin (AdoCbl)\, is an important enzymatic cofactor in prokaryotic and eukaryotic species. This molecule consists of a central cobalt coordinated equatorially to a corrin ring ligand\, with a lower axial dimethylbenzimidazole α-ligand and an upper axial deoxyadenosyl β-ligand. AdoCbl’s ground state reactivity has been studied in detail\, but it was only recently that its role as chromophore in the bacterial photoreceptor protein CarH showed a biological usage of the molecule’s inherent light-sensitivity. The light-induced response of AdoCbl can be characterized using time-resolved spectroscopies. Presently\, our group has performed studies with transient absorption (TA) UV-Vis spectroscopy\, X-ray absorption spectroscopy\, and X-ray emission spectroscopy. TA spectroscopy provides electronic information about the valence orbitals of the system. The X-ray spectroscopies are element-specific probes of the electronic and atomic structure around the central cobalt atom of the AdoCbl. These studies reveal a distinct solvent-dependence of AdoCbl photochemistry as well as a dynamic dance of structural distortions immediately following light excitation. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and finite difference method (FDM) calculations are used to simulate the X-ray absorption and emission spectra. This information is crucial for understanding the CarH protein more deeply as well as bringing cobalamin-based light-mediated drug delivery and optogenetic applications closer to reality.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Bessel operators as toy models of renormalization group
DESCRIPTION:In Quantum Field Theory one usually needs to perform the following steps:\n1. Cut off the formal Hamiltonian with a momentum cutoff.\n2. Add an appropriate counterterm times a running coupling constant. \n3. Determine the differential equation for the coupling constant.\n4. Go with the cutoff to infinity.\nI will show that the same steps are needed in the much simpler context of Bessel Hamiltonians\, that is\, Schr\\"odinger operators with the inverse square potential\, if you use the momentum representation. The action of scaling on self-adjoint realizations of Bessel operators serves as a nice illustration of a \"renormalization group flow\".

SUMMARY:Performance:Vance Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:“Among the quintessential musical poets”—Dirty Linen\n \nVance Gilbert exploded onto the tough Boston songwriting scene in the early 1990s\, with buzz spreading quickly. Who was this multicultural arts teacher knocking them dead at open mics? After opening on Shawn Colvin’s 1992 \"Fat City\" tour\, he took much of America by storm and by surprise. \"With the voice of an angel\, the wit of a devil\, and the guitar playing of a god\, it was enough to earn him that rarity: an encore for an opener\,\" wrote the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. With 16 critically acclaimed albums\, Vance Gilbert continues to refine his unlikely union of humor\, virtuosity\, and the unexpected. Whether with original songwriting or ageless interpretations of covers\, his is a presentation steeped in deep humanism and bravery\, stunning artistry and soul\, and contagious\, unbridled joy. Vance comes to The Ark with a new album\, \"The Mother of Trouble.\"\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4165/4166 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Flash Talk Take-Over | Inspiring Conservation: The Great Lakes Gardens at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:The Great Lakes Gardens were established in 2013 to showcase a diverse array of natural communities and their associated plants that are native to Michigan and the Great Lakes region. The gardens serve as an important place for the general public and university community to learn about these natural communities and be inspired to care about their protection and stewardship. In addition to the educational and inspirational benefits to conservation\, the gardens play an important role in the *ex situ* conservation of numerous uncommon and rare native plants and the insect fauna that rely on them. Challenges to curating and caring for the Great Lakes Gardens include acquiring and establishing representative native plants\, maintaining adequate interpretive signage (especially plant labels)\, and controlling nonnative plants.\n\nMichael Kost serves as the associate curator at University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum and as a lecturer in the School for Environment and Sustainability. As a curator\, he focuses on natural areas stewardship planning and making data on living collections accessible for teaching\, learning\, and research. Before joining U-M\, he served as the lead ecologist and a senior conservation scientist with Michigan Natural Features Inventory at Michigan State University\, where he focused on documenting and describing natural communities and rare species\, as well as identifying key sites for biodiversity conservation and management. In this role\, he coauthored over 80 publications\, including three books on the natural communities of Michigan.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, graduate students\, or guests talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/94263457873\n\nMeeting ID: 942 6345 7873\nPasscode: Kelsey

SUMMARY:Performance:Adam Ezra Group
DESCRIPTION:Spontaneous roots-based music that makes a connection\n \nTalk to any Adam Ezra Group fan around the country\, and they’ll tell you that each AEG performance is a one-of-a-kind\, community-driven experience\, propelled by the spirit of the people in front of the stage. For both fans and band members alike\, an AEG concert is a rally to live life with intensity and soak in the moments we share with one another. Hailing from Boston\, AEG has an unconventional approach that allows them to surge beyond their beloved hometown and emerge as one of the most uniquely powerful\, underground live music experiences in the country. While Ezra has played with an array of musicians over the years\, his current lineup has been creating a new buzz around the country\, as evidenced by their heavy tour schedule\, ballooning tickets sales\, and opening features with The Wallflowers\, Galactic\, John Oates\, The Wailers\, Southside Johnny\, Graham Parker\, and America. With no set lists\, every AEG show provides new and unique concert experiences that the band has been recording in real time and sharing with fans on thumbs drives as part of their “Live Sound Project” every night. Go to any Adam Ezra show\, solo or with the group\, and you will not only find fans who have traveled vast distances to be there\, but also doubtless a fair number of rabid followers accumulating as many AEG shows as possible throughout the year. You may have seen one of Adam’s 500 live online shows during the pandemic—now check him out live!\n\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4092/4093 for more detail.

When I said\, 'I can't play an instrument\, Lord\,' He said\, 'Get a guitar...' and here we are today!\" Al says.

SUMMARY:Performance:Jennifer Knapp
DESCRIPTION:The first major Christian artist to speak openly about her LGBTQ identity\n\nJennifer Knapp is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter\, author\, speaker and advocate. Her impressive history includes selling over one million albums with her first three releases\, “Kansas” (debut 1998\, Gold-certified)\, “Lay It Down” (2000)\, and “The Way I Am” (2001). She has earned four Dove Awards and two Grammy nominations. The Kansas-born musician has toured the globe with artists such as Jars of Clay and was featured on the Lilith Fair Tour in 1999 and 2010. With a considerable fan base and critical and commercial success\, Jennifer walked away from music in 2002 at the height of her career. After a seven-year hiatus she returned in 2010 with a renewed passion for music showcased in her album “Letting Go\,” which debuted at No. 73 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart. “Set Me Free” followed in 2014 on Righteous Babe Records in conjunction with a memoir\, Facing the Music: My Story\, published by Simon & Schuster. Her 2017 album “Love Comes Back Around\,” produced by Viktor Krauss\, pairs her fearless songwriting and strong\, expressive voice with Americana-style rootsy arrangements.\nAs the first major artist in the Christian music world to speak openly about LGBTQ identity\, Jennifer initiated a national dialogue\, including appearances on Larry King Live and the TEDx stage. In 2012 she founded the non-profit organization Inside Out Faith\, through which she continues to speak and perform nationally as an advocate for LGBTQ & faith issues. A true Renaissance woman\, Knapp recently completed a Master’s Degree in Theological Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School.\n\n\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4094/4095 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Performance:Thunderstorm Artis
DESCRIPTION:New songwriting from Hawaii\n\nSoaring vocals meet dextrous\, layered guitar and intimate storytelling that can evoke the poetic lyricism of Passenger in one song before sliding into the wrenching neo-soul of Leon Bridges in another. Thunderstorm Artis was born and raised in a large musical family on the North Shore of Oahu\, and it’s easy to find the laid-back vibe of island life effortlessly blended with the real-life experiences that inspire his music. As a Season 18 finalist on The Voice\, Thunderstorm wowed audiences with both his original compositions\, including quiet acoustic track “Sedona\,” and loving reinterpretations of songs by artists like The Beatles and Louis Armstrong\, with John Legend describing his tone as “magical” and Billboard praising his “earnest\, uplifting presence.” Thunderstorm Artis has played alongside modern icons Jack Johnson and Booker T.\, and he has toured extensively with his brother\, Ron Artis II. He’s also a longtime featured artist at Wanderlust Festivals throughout North America.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4161/4162 for more detail.
