SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sarah Buckius: !!!techn010ffspring!!!
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the intricate and interlocking world of Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance\, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology\, robotics\, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women\, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \nTrained as an engineer and an artist\, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex\, layered\, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving\, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood\, technology\, female bodies\, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to\, and alternative to\, patriarchal\, capitalist\, production-based\, and seemingly rational\, useful\, logical systems. \n“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F\, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.\nThis project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Santa Cruz County Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Shared Humanity
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Friday\, August 11th\, the exhibit Shared Humanity will be featured at the Greater Flint Arts Council from the Prison Creative Arts Project’s (PCAP) private collection. The artwork is for sale and will be on display through September 1\, 2023.\n\nAccording to Sarah Unrath\, Curator and PCAP's Community Engagement Specialist\, “The exhibition is designed to connect viewers to artists through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams\, memories\, goals\, pasts. We all process emotions of anger\, joy\, grief\, and nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have navigated the complex realities of being human.”\n\nThe curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists\, including Andy Wynkoop\, An ArtsyGuy\, RIK\, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson\, and many others.\n\n“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection\, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity\,” says Unrath\n\nAdmission is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Stop by the Student Showcase display in the museum’s main atrium\, behind the mastodons\, to see Molecules of Life.\n\nAugust 2023–July 2024\n\nMolecules of Life (Student Showcase)\nDiscover the connection between form and function as you explore the molecular building blocks of life. In the realm of biological macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids\, form determines function\, so visualizing the three-dimensional structures of molecules is key in researching the ‘tiny’ macromolecules that perform vital functions in our cells. In Biophysics 421\, under the guidance of Markos Koutmos\, Assistant Professor of Biophysics & Chemistry\, and Liz Tidwell\, PhD candidate in Biophysics\, students created models with digital modeling software and brought them to life via 3D printing. This exhibit showcases the 3D printed molecules\, scaled up to better reveal the structures that inform\, make\, break\, modify\, and move within the body.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:UN/EARTH
DESCRIPTION:Featuring work by Gina Gibson\, UN/EARTH explores science and art from a mile underground. Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead\, South Dakota\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—deep underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation\, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with the University of Michigan\, the LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology\, geology and engineering.\n\nGina Gibson is an internationally exhibiting artist and professor of Graphic Design at Black Hills State University. In 2019\, Gibson became the first artist in residence at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Gibson's work celebrates the search deep below the surface for beauty in the old and new\, the light and dark\, and the known and unknown.\n\nUN/EARTH was developed in collaboration with the U-M Department of Physics\, the Sanford Underground Research Facility and Black Hills State University.

SUMMARY:Tours:Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library
DESCRIPTION:As we celebrate the library’s centennial\, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors\, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.\n\nIt builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary\, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library\, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Physics Graduate Student Symposium (PGSS) | Higher Order Threshold Dynamics Schemes for Motion by Mean Curvature
DESCRIPTION:Threshold dynamics is well known as a popular algorithm for simulating the motion of interfaces\; nowadays\, it's broadly used in image segmentation and solid dewetting. The original version of the algorithm\, which is only first-order accurate in time in the two-phase setting\, was proposed by Merriman\, Bence\, and Osher in 1992. Since then\, many extensions of the algorithm have been given\, for instance\, to multiphase mean curvature motion\, where it has proven particularly useful and flexible. There have also been high-order accurate versions of the algorithm proposed in several previous studies. Our goal is to take a step toward providing more accurate versions of threshold dynamics with nice properties\, for example\, monotonicity\, which respects the comparison principle of the exact evolution. We'll also introduce our recent finding: the connection between threshold dynamics and the median filter\, which is an elegant\, monotone discretization of the level set formulation of motion by mean curvature. This results in a new level set method for multiphase mean curvature motion that allows locating the interface via interpolation and enforces the correct junction condition at the free boundaries\, at the generality demanded by applications.

SUMMARY:Performance:Joanna Sterling
DESCRIPTION:Album release show!\n\nJoanna Sterling is a folk/pop songstress from Ann Arbor. Armed with an arresting voice\, and a command of melody sharper than Artemis' arrow\, Sterling is captivating hearts with every midwest listening room appearance. Imagine the spiritual successor of ‘90s Lilith Fair–era artists like Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos\, surrounded by the lush orchestral chamber pop arrangements of artists like Damien Rice and early Bon Iver. After a handful of years playing the Midwest singer/songwriter circuit and headlining Pride Festivals as frontwoman of Joanna and the Jaywalkers\, she took on the moniker of Joanna Sterling to celebrate her human and musical growth into the grounded tour de force she is today. Her songs are tales of love and loss\, the insights of a practicing psychotherapist\, the murmured rituals of a Tarot reader\, the triumphant LGBTQ+ anthems of a trans woman emboldening marginalized voices by giving us her own. Joanna has graced the stages of notable Michigan venues and festivals\, including The Ark\, Trinity House Theatre\, Ann Arbor Summer Festival\, and Chelsea Sounds and Sights. Her new album\, “Queen of Wands\,” was produced by fellow Michigan folk auteur Chris DuPont\, and features the collaborative minds of some of the Midwest's finest players. It will be available on all platforms on August 18\, 2023. \n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4199/4200 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Clements Bookworm: Jason Young and Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield\, South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register: http://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_6-uBey5BRneGzLydB7kbqA#/registration.\n \nOn the third Friday of the month\, the Clements Library hosts a virtual Bookworm program that gathers authors\, collectors\, fellows and University staff for a conversation on a variety of history topics. Inspired by the traditional Clements Library Tea Time\, attendees are encouraged to post comments and questions\, respond to polls\, and add to the conversation. On August 18th\, the Bookworm will host U-M Professor Jason Young\, curator of Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield\, South Carolina--an exhibition that will open at UMMA on August 26th. \n \nHear Me Now is a landmark exhibition of more than 60 objects representing the work of African American potters in the decades surrounding the Civil War. The exhibition features monumental storage jars by the enslaved and literate potter and poet Dave\, later recorded as David Drake (about 1800–about 1870)\, while the inclusion of several contemporary works from leading Black artists links the past to the present. Working primarily in clay\, these artists respond to the legacy of the Edgefield potters and consider the resonance of this history for audiences today.\n \nFor more information\, please call The Clements Library at 734-764-2347 or visit https://clements.umich.edu/public-programs/bookworm.\n\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Bettye Lavette
DESCRIPTION:“I ain’t got no f*cking other plan\,” says the legendary Bettye LaVette. She’s talking about her 61-year storied career\, beginning in 1960’s Detroit\, with a resurgence in the mid-2000’s. For her latest LP\, simply titled LaVette! (June 16)\, she teamed once again with producer Steve Jordan for a special release on Jay-Vee Records\, the label founded by Jordan and Meegan Voss. An interpreter without peer\, Bettye chose to record an album of songs written by Randall Bramblett. “I think he’s the best songwriter I’ve heard in the past 30 years\,” says LaVette\, “and I just discovered him eight years ago.”\n\n“Bettye LaVette is like a combination of Frank Sinatra\, Billie Holiday and Miles Davis\,” says Jordan. “When I prepare a band for her\, I make sure we have it together. When she joins us\, we’re only gonna get one or two takes\, because she puts her heart and soul into each performance.” The late\, great George Jones\, called her \"a singer's singer\".\n\nBorn in Muskegon\, Michigan\, Bettye’s parents\, Louisiana migrants\, ran a club out of\ntheir home. They sold corn liquor and chicken sandwiches and spun records for the\nBlack auto-parts workers and traveling gospel groups who didn’t have a hangout to kick back in and call their own. She was a toddler\, listening in on old folks' business\; learning old folks' ways. Some of that was conversation\, observing the interactions\, the repartee\; some of it was the 78s that spun on the family’s jukebox — a trove of blues\, gospel\, country & western\, and the latest R&B that filtered through AM radio playlists.\n\n“When Bettye gets a hold of a song\, it becomes her song\,” Jordan explains. “It’s like she wrote it. She’s a great messenger\, a communicator\, an interpreter.\n“I’m very happy with what we’ve done\,” Bettye adds. “It is very\, very difficult to please an old woman\, but I’m nearly excited.” She is a six-time Grammy nominee\, has recieved a Pioneer Award from The Rhythm & Blues Foundation\, has won several Blues Music Awards and has been inducted into The Blues Hall Of Fame. Bettye is one of very few of her contemporaries who were recording during the birth of soul music in the 1960s and is still creating vital recordings today.\n\nShe and her full band will be presenting songs from the new album as well as some\nolder favorites.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4173/4174 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Sweet Water Warblers
DESCRIPTION:A Michigan supergroup!\n\nIf the whole is greater than the sum of its parts\, then The Sweet Water Warblers are no exception. Comprising Michigan songbirds Rachael Davis\, Lindsay Lou\, and May Erlewine\, the folk trio’s organic vocal harmonies and seamlessly interwoven instrumentation leaves listeners breathless. The Sweet Water Warblers came together in 2014\, for a single performance at the Hoxeyville Music Festival upon request by the promoter. From the beginning\, there was a unique connection between the three artists\, a bond forged by a mutual passion for social change and expansion of the soul through music. The Warblers forged ahead with their first full studio album\, “The Dream That Holds This Child.” Produced by Dan Knobler (Lake Street Dive\, Caroline Spence)\, the album serves to empower and uplift spirits\, and offer refuge\, solidarity and support through its focus on modern femininity. “Our sound is a place of refuge. Its roots are deep\, and its arms are stretched open wide\,” says Lindsay Lou. “This is the gospel of creating beauty from pain.”\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4207/4208 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:In-person Arabic Placement test_August 23\, 2023 (11:00am-2:00pm)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary. b. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.c. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* The Summer Language Institute (June & July) offers intensive Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102\, combined)\, Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined)\, and Arabic 401 & 402.About the UM Arabic programUM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand either the Egyptian dialect or the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to learning to read and write and understand formal Arabic (fuSHa). Students starting to learn Arabic\, if they have no background in Arabic\, can choose to take either dialect or can switch their dialect focus from one semester to the next. The dialect focus of each class section is indicated in the schedule of classes. If you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:“That girl gets down to the nitty gritty”—Koko Taylor\n\nDanielle Nicole Schnebelen began singing publicly with her parents’ bands as a youth\, and music took hold of her full time in her early 20s. \"My father really loved the blues\,” Danielle says. “He'd go to all the true blues guys that were around in KC\, specifically Little Hatch. He'd played for Abb Locke (saxophonist for Muddy Waters) and we'd get brought along sometimes. The pure\, raw emotion relayed through the blues was what really drew me to it. Its history is the foundation of American Music and is THE one that must be respected and not buried as myth or legend.\" Danielle plays the bass as well as singing\; she was the first woman ever nominated as bass instrumentalist at the Blues Music Awards\, and she went on to win the award four times. With veteran bluesmen Brandon Miller (guitar) and Go-Go Ray (percussion) backing her up\, Danielle Nicole brings a show drenched in heavy blues.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4155/4156 for more detail.
