SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.\n\nLearn more about the exhibition and the artists at https://myumi.ch/8eVrM\n\nThe exhibit opens on September 15\, 2023 in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Holding Places Exhibition by Satchel Lee
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Hours: Mon-Fri\, 9 am-5 pm or by appointment: serrag@med.umich.edu\nBorn and raised in New York City\, Satchel Lee is a multi-media artist whose work can best be described as portraiture. Through collaborations with her immediate community\, and also using herself as a subject\, Lee draws inspiration from the quotidian\, creating offbeat images that aim to preserve this moment in time\, (re) examine memories (especially those clouded by confusion) all the while asking questions around identity and existence.\n\nLee holds a BFA from the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Photography at School of the Art Institute of Chicago.\n\nIn Lee’s photographic exploration\, she investigates the profound connection between places and structures and the echoes of trauma that inhabit them. “Holding Places” is an exhibition that immerses viewers into a visual narrative\, inviting them to witness the power of space as holders and conduits for personal memory.\n\nBy reconstructing these places by hand in model scale and rendering them not as they were\, but how she experienced them\, she is able to navigate intimate details and hidden narratives that exist within them. The process of crafting these miniatures becomes a meditative contemplation\, giving Lee time to sit and reflect on these past events.\n\nThrough Lee’s lens\, they capture the visual manifestations of the ghosts of the past. The photographs offer glimpses into spaces where anguish\, conflict and distress have left their imprints\, sometimes visible\, sometimes buried beneath layers of time (and self preservation).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Peter Dunn Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture\, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as\nscribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core\, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding\, augmenting\, slicing\, repeating\, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception\, sympathy\, hierarchy\, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.\n\nPeter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies

DESCRIPTION:A Michigan songwriter collective\n\nThe Yellow Room is the \"brilliantly yellow\" living room of Tamulevich's house on Ann Arbor's Old West Side\, where gang members meet monthly for musical brainstorming and mutual critique. There are eight members of the gang\, most or all of whom are on hand for any given show: contemporary country-folk road warrior Annie Capps\, Irish-American chanteuse Kitty Donohoe\, four-time Detroit Music Award winner Jan Krist\, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich of the \"Music to Cure What Ails You\" duo Mustard's Retreat\, “One Shining Moment” composer David Barrett\, Jim Bizer (who wrote a song about a romance that began with someone falling off a 30-story building)\, and southeastern Michigan folk veteran Matt Watroba. Come and be a fly on the wall as the exchange of creative ideas flows freely! \"To have any one of these songwriters perform at Trinity House is a real treat\,\" says promoter Bill Keith. \"To have them perform together is unbelievable.\" The Yellow Room Gang has been around for more than15 years now\, with all the members coming up with new music all the while.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4364/4365 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield\, South Carolina
DESCRIPTION:Confront the past and celebrate the creative voices of an untold chapter of American history.\n \nHear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield\, South Carolina is a landmark exhibition of more than 60 objects representing the work of African American potters in the decades surrounding the Civil War. \n \nIt is a reckoning with the central role that enslaved and free Black potters played in the long-standing stoneware traditions of Edgefield\, South Carolina. It is also an important story about the unrelenting power of artistic expression and creativity\, even while under the brutal conditions of slavery—and about the joy\, struggle\, creative ambition\, and lived experience of African Americans in the 19th-century American South.\n \nThe exhibition features many objects rarely seen outside of the South\, bringing together monumental storage jars by the enslaved and literate potter and poet Dave\, later recorded as David Drake (about 1800–about 1870)\, along with rare examples of the region’s utilitarian wares and powerful face vessels by potters once known but unrecorded. \n \nThe inclusion of several contemporary works from leading Black artists links the past to the present in Hear Me Now. Established figures like Theaster Gates and Simone Leigh\, as well as younger\, emerging artists like Adebunmi Gbadebo\, and Woody De Othello have contributed to the exhibition. Working primarily in clay\, these artists respond to the legacy of the Edgefield potters and consider the resonance of this history for audiences today.\n \nCurated by Jason Young\, Professor of History\, University of Michigan\; Adrienne Spinozzi\, Associate Curator\, American Wing\, The Metropolitan Museum of Art\; and Ethan Lasser\, John Moors Cabot Chair\, Art of the Americas\, Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\n\nhellow\n\nhellow\n\nHear Me Now is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, with support from the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Henry Luce Foundation.\n\nLead support for UMMA's presentation of the exhibition is provided by Michigan Engineering\, the U-M Office of the Provost\, the Americana Foundation\, the U-M College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts\, the U-M Inclusive History Project\, and Michigan Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by Larry and Brenda Thompson and Melissa Kaish and Jonathan Dorfman. \n\n \n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Arabic Placement test_January 8\, 2024 (1:00pm-3:30pm)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary. b. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.c. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Students can take intensive Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102\, combined)\, and Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) in the Spring/Summer terms. If you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Seminar Seminar Series: Yizhe Zhu\, Visiting Assistant Professor\, University of California\, Irvine. Postdoctoral Researcher\, Collaboration on the Theoretical Foundations of Deep Learning.
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The non-backtracking operator\, an asymmetric matrix constructed from an undirected graph\, connects to various aspects of graph theory\, including random walks\, graph zeta functions\, and expander graphs. It has emerged as a powerful tool for analyzing sparse random graphs\, leading to significant advancements with established results for sparse random matrices using this operator. Additionally\, algorithms employing the non-backtracking operator have achieved optimal sample complexity in many low-rank estimation problems. In my talk\, I will present my recent work utilizing the non-backtracking operator\, demonstrating how theoretical elegance drives the design of innovative algorithms through the introduction of asymmetry into data matrices. The discussion will include estimates of the extreme singular values of sparse random matrices and explore data science applications such as hypergraph community detection and tensor completion.

SUMMARY:Performance:Save the Speakeasy Benefit Concert
DESCRIPTION:Help save an Ann Arbor institution\n\nIn 2022\, Johnny Williams' home -- above his well-known and highly regarded house concert venue\, Johnny's Speakeasy -- suffered a devastating fire. Johnny paid for a premium homeowner's replacement policy for nearly 30 years\, but after 18+ months his insurance company continues to delay fair payment on his claim. A denial of fair payment will shutter this historic Ann Arbor musical institution and force Johnny Williams\, a pillar of our community\, to move away. As of now\, the insurance company stopped paying for temporary housing so Johnny has been forced to move up north near family. This benefit concert features a lineup of some of the finest artists from across Michigan performing in support and solidarity with the grassroots\, community driven campaign to Save the Speakeasy and Bring Johnny Home! All proceeds will go to a community created legal fund to help Johnny attain a fair settlement so that he can return to Ann Arbor\, rebuild his home\, and reopen the beloved Speakeasy.\n\nLineup:\nChris Buhalis \nJudy Banker Band\nAl Bettis\nDave Boutette & Kristi Davis\nAnnie & Rod Capps Band\nRochelle Clark\nShari Kane & Dave Steele\nBilly King and San & Emily Slomovits\nMisty Lyn & the Big Beautiful\nPeter Madcat Ruth\nThe Sidemen\nThe Dick Siegel Trio\nRollie Tussing Trio\nMisty Lyn & the Big Beautiful\nThe Whiskey Charmers\nWilson Thicket\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/4519/4520 for more detail.
