DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:10-hour Brief Introduction to Motivational Interviewing for Medical Staff (and three spots for Michigan Medicine clinical staff)
DESCRIPTION:On zoom: this series is largely for UHS medical staff (nurses\, MAs\, physicians\, NPs\, PAs) and we will reserve three spots for Michigan Medicine medical folks to participate. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a terrific tool for helping people change behavior. It's especially helpful for medical staff when addressing chronic illness components such as lifestyle changes and medication adherence). Learn basic\, foundational skills for MI\, including spirit (Compassion\, Acceptance\, Partnership\, Evocation/Empowerment)\, OARS (open questions\, affirmations\, reflections\, summaries)\, identifying and responding to change talk and a little on discord (if there is time). We'll include a lot of practice in \"real plays\" (you get to work on your own behavior changes that you are ambivalent about--so bring a couple behaviors to consider. While you won't be an expert at MI when you are done\, you will be able to start the practice\, move forward in your skills\, know how to improve and maybe even want to learn more. Please only register if you can attend all of the training dates\, as each day builds on prior sessions. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is entitled HOMECOMING because it has been almost 6 years since Bill was scheduled to have an exhibition at NCRC Gallery.  However\, his untimely passing in 2018 prevented the exhibition.  In honor of the artist\, his wife Meighen Jackson has assembled this body of work for this exhibition.\n\nA 1960’s graduate of Monteith College at Wayne State\, Bill saw himself not as a storyteller nor a documentarian\, but as a photographer seeking images with the power and creativity of late 20th century painting and music making.\n\nBill Jackson’s work is represented nationally by Walter Wickiser Gallery in Manhattan and regionally by M Contemporary in Ferndale\, MI.   It is included in many permanent collections including Wayne State University in Detroit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Enna Diddio Exhibition \"War Relics\"
DESCRIPTION:Enna Diddio was born and raised in Detroit.  She is a multimedia artist with a newfound attachment to printmaking. A recent Wayne State Fine Arts graduate\, with a major in Drawing\, Diddio’s work is versatile and inquisitive. She is a strong proponent of City of Detroit\, with a strong sense of community\, craftsmanship\, and creativity. They have created as space between traditionally taught skills and the contemporary methods to apply them and I desire to function within that space.\n\nThe works in the exhibition “War Relics” speak directly to the printmaking qualities and imagery of Western war iconography and memorabilia. In recent years the artist has gravitated towards signage\, print\, poster\, stamp\, reproduction and automation and highlighting the roll advertisement and design play in war. Some pieces include pin up nose bird art\, signage\, ration packaging and wartime tattoo flash.

DESCRIPTION:Students of Greek and Roman religion have often noted that people in the ancient Mediterranean were more interested in ritual participation (orthopraxy) than theological dogma (orthodoxy). But what can we know about whether and how the ancient Greeks and Romans thought their rituals accomplished anything? How did they think ritual worked? This interdisciplinary conference explores the understudied question of the efficacy of ritual\, i.e.\, how people in the ancient world understood the positive (and sometimes negative) functions of religious practices such as sacrifice\, prayer\, choral dance\, and temple cult. SUMMARY:Exhibition:My Gender States
DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkor Complex: ​Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia.
DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. Showcasing works from worldwide collections\, including those from some of the foremost members of the Cambodian contemporary art scene\, Angkor Complex allows viewers to encounter the still-fresh scars of a genocide and critically appreciate the strategies evolved to nurture resilience in trying times.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost\, U-M Office of the President\, National Endowment for the Arts\, Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund\, and U-M Ross School of Business.\n

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. DESCRIPTION:Chair: Shai Revzen\n\nAbstract:\nMulti-legged robots with six or more legs have designs with great stability and maneuverability using a low number of actuators. With more legs in contact with the ground\, it becomes harder and unnecessary to ensure that they all move in compatible ways to ensure non-slip contact\, and slipping becomes inevitable in our robots. Modeling multi-legged motion with slipping and producing reliable predictions of body velocity is challenging and computationally expensive. In this work\, we investigated an algorithm that allows us to efficiently model body velocity and ground contact forces given robot shape and shape-changing velocity. This algorithm relies on previous experimental observations showing that even while slipping\, multi-legged robots are principally kinematic\, where body velocity could be computed through a linear local connection from the shape-changing velocity. This tool scaled well with an increasing number of legs without losing accuracy. We applied our algorithm towards modeling multiple robots with different morphology and different gaits\, together with predicting 3-dimensional ground contact forces. Further extension of this model enabled its usage on stairs or slopes. The simplicity of the model led to easy parallelization and motion planning of the robot’s behaviors on GPU. Analysis of the modeling residual term led to a simple and data-efficient sim-to-real transfer to unmodeled robot dynamics.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA language requirement.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test.You will not be notified of your score automatically. DESCRIPTION:Surface Organometallic Chemistry is an approach to synthesizing heterogeneous catalysts with molecular precision and relies on knowledge of homogeneous organometallic reactions. In our lab\, we aim to install active sites on surfaces using oxidative addition of low-valent metal centers to surface functional groups. This strategy is a complementary route to the more common approaches (e.g.\, protonolysis of metal-ligand bonds by acidic surface sites) taken in surface organometallic chemistry. Using our approach\, we developed a heterogeneous nickel-hydride catalyst that is highly active and selective for alkene isomerization. This reaction development was enabled by our work on homogeneous N-heterocyclic carbene-nickel catalysts for both alkene isomerization and hydrosilylation\, which both utilize a nickel-hydride complex as the active catalyst.

DESCRIPTION:Ari Hest is a Grammy nominated indie folk singer/songwriter who built a fiercely loyal following through relentless touring over the past two decades. In addition to releasing 10 albums in that time\, in 2008 Ari wrote\, recorded\, and released a new song every Monday during a project he called “52\,” and subsequently released “Twelve Mondays” in 2009 - a collection of re-mixed fan favorites from “52”.\n\nIn 2017\, Ari collaborated with Judy Collins to release “Silver Skies Blue”\, a duets album that earned them a Grammy nomination that year.\n\nMike Vial is a singer-songwriter and educator based in Ann Arbor. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Xiaohong Xu\, sociologist of politics\, culture\, revolution\, political economy\, and China\, passed away on December 12\, 2023. His death interrupted a period of great creativity and productivity. In his last years\, Xiaohong saw several texts he had dedicated years to complete going into print and others assume form and coherence.\n\nOn May 24\, almost half a year after Xiaohong’s departure\, Michigan Sociology and the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies will hold a day of symposium to honor Xiaohong and showcase his original and evocative sociological thinking. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is entitled HOMECOMING because it has been almost 6 years since Bill was scheduled to have an exhibition at NCRC Gallery.  However\, his untimely passing in 2018 prevented the exhibition.  In honor of the artist\, his wife Meighen Jackson has assembled this body of work for this exhibition.\n\nA 1960’s graduate of Monteith College at Wayne State\, Bill saw himself not as a storyteller nor a documentarian\, but as a photographer seeking images with the power and creativity of late 20th century painting and music making.\n\nBill Jackson’s work is represented nationally by Walter Wickiser Gallery in Manhattan and regionally by M Contemporary in Ferndale\, MI.   It is included in many permanent collections including Wayne State University in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Enna Diddio was born and raised in Detroit.  She is a multimedia artist with a newfound attachment to printmaking. A recent Wayne State Fine Arts graduate\, with a major in Drawing\, Diddio’s work is versatile and inquisitive. She is a strong proponent of City of Detroit\, with a strong sense of community\, craftsmanship\, and creativity. They have created as space between traditionally taught skills and the contemporary methods to apply them and I desire to function within that space.\n\nThe works in the exhibition “War Relics” speak directly to the printmaking qualities and imagery of Western war iconography and memorabilia. In recent years the artist has gravitated towards signage\, print\, poster\, stamp\, reproduction and automation and highlighting the roll advertisement and design play in war. Some pieces include pin up nose bird art\, signage\, ration packaging and wartime tattoo flash.

DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. The exhibit is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.\n\nHosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA language requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test.You will not be notified of your score automatically. SUMMARY:Presentation:Webinar: Connect to Protect: Transferring Conservation Science in New Hampshire’s Coastal Watershed
DESCRIPTION:Since 1994\, collaboration among the Great Bay Resource Protection Partnership has resulted in the protection of over 82\,000 acres in New Hampshire’s coastal watershed. Resources such as the 2006 Land Conservation Plan – which informed watershed protection goals\, identified regional priorities\, and guided strategic decision-making for over a decade – have contributed to this success by evaluating regional progress and promoting understanding of conservation efforts to date. In 2021\, the Nature Conservancy of New Hampshire released an updated version of the plan that reflects new conservation priorities for climate adaptation\, water resource protection\, wildlife habitat and landscape connectivity corridors\, and working lands.\n\nSupported by a science transfer grant\, the Connect to Protect project facilitated the transfer of knowledge from the updated plan to intended users in the region through a focused outreach effort which included a needs assessment\, formal knowledge transfer workshops\, and a technical assistance program. In addition to facilitating knowledge transfer and outreach\, the project provides a strong example of how funds can be leveraged to launch and support lasting regional relationships that continue beyond a project timeline. In this webinar\, team members will discuss the approach and impacts of the project\, including where this work sits within the broader context of the region and how collaborative outreach increases the reach of conservation work.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Biological systems are complex dynamic networks.  In this talk\, I will introduce GOBI (General Model-based Inference)\, a simple and scalable method for inferring regulatory networks from time-series data. GOBI can infer gene regulatory networks and ecological networks that cannot be obtained with previous causation detection methods (e.g.\, Granger\, CCM\, PCM). I will then introduce Density-PINN (Physics-Informed NeuralNetwork)\, a method for inferring the shape of the time-delay distribution of interactions in a network. The inferred shape of time-delay distribution can be used to identify the number of pathways that induce a signaling response against antibiotics\, which solves the long-standing mystery\, the major source of cell-to-cell heterogeneity in response to stress. DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Andrea Carlson Future Cache
DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Angkor Complex: ​Cultural Heritage and Post-Genocide Memory in Cambodia.
DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Propositions to Progress: A Working Atlas of the Global South
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state\, museum\, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.\n\nCian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography\, archaeology\, history\, and mythology. DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is entitled HOMECOMING because it has been almost 6 years since Bill was scheduled to have an exhibition at NCRC Gallery.  However\, his untimely passing in 2018 prevented the exhibition.  In honor of the artist\, his wife Meighen Jackson has assembled this body of work for this exhibition.\n\nA 1960’s graduate of Monteith College at Wayne State\, Bill saw himself not as a storyteller nor a documentarian\, but as a photographer seeking images with the power and creativity of late 20th century painting and music making.\n\nBill Jackson’s work is represented nationally by Walter Wickiser Gallery in Manhattan and regionally by M Contemporary in Ferndale\, MI.   It is included in many permanent collections including Wayne State University in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Enna Diddio was born and raised in Detroit.  She is a multimedia artist with a newfound attachment to printmaking. A recent Wayne State Fine Arts graduate\, with a major in Drawing\, Diddio’s work is versatile and inquisitive. She is a strong proponent of City of Detroit\, with a strong sense of community\, craftsmanship\, and creativity. They have created as space between traditionally taught skills and the contemporary methods to apply them and I desire to function within that space.\n\nThe works in the exhibition “War Relics” speak directly to the printmaking qualities and imagery of Western war iconography and memorabilia. In recent years the artist has gravitated towards signage\, print\, poster\, stamp\, reproduction and automation and highlighting the roll advertisement and design play in war. Some pieces include pin up nose bird art\, signage\, ration packaging and wartime tattoo flash.

DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:CCPS Exhibition. Modernist Glass from the Polish Past
DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.\n\nOrganized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies\, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. DESCRIPTION:Historically\, maps have served as a panoptic technology\, assisting imperial powers in governance\, discipline\, and control. In this exhibit\, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer\, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.\n\nDayrit’s artworks\, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps\, plot the extraction of natural resources\, land grabbing\, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time\, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.\n\nDayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural\, urban\, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. In honor of the artist\, his wife Meighen Jackson has assembled this body of work for this exhibition.\n\nA 1960’s graduate of Monteith College at Wayne State\, Bill saw himself not as a storyteller nor a documentarian\, but as a photographer seeking images with the power and creativity of late 20th century painting and music making.\n\nBill Jackson’s work is represented nationally by Walter Wickiser Gallery in Manhattan and regionally by M Contemporary in Ferndale\, MI.   It is included in many permanent collections including Wayne State University in Detroit.

DESCRIPTION:Enna Diddio was born and raised in Detroit.  She is a multimedia artist with a newfound attachment to printmaking. A recent Wayne State Fine Arts graduate\, with a major in Drawing\, Diddio’s work is versatile and inquisitive. She is a strong proponent of City of Detroit\, with a strong sense of community\, craftsmanship\, and creativity. They have created as space between traditionally taught skills and the contemporary methods to apply them and I desire to function within that space.\n\nThe works in the exhibition “War Relics” speak directly to the printmaking qualities and imagery of Western war iconography and memorabilia. In recent years the artist has gravitated towards signage\, print\, poster\, stamp\, reproduction and automation and highlighting the roll advertisement and design play in war. Some pieces include pin up nose bird art\, signage\, ration packaging and wartime tattoo flash.

DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. DESCRIPTION:In Andrea Carlson Future Cache\, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors\, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15\, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial\, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”  \n \nPresented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians\, Margaret Noodin\, and Richard A. DESCRIPTION:Care in Uncertain Times\n \nAs crises of public health\, economic instability\, authoritarian regimes\, racial injustice\, and climate change spread around the globe\, millions are experiencing distress\, conflict\, uncertainty\, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979\, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia\, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases\, weapon wounds\, and malnutrition.\n \nThis exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Statistics in the Modern Era: High Dimensions\, Decision-Making\, and Privacy
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the abundance of data collection from edge devices like cell phones\, personal computers\, and smartwatches\, have put the privacy of personal data at risk. Therefore\, differential privacy (DP)\, a mathematical framework that guarantees data privacy protection by ensuring similar output irrespective of the presence or absence of an individual in the database\, has emerged as one of the leading research areas in the landscape of modern AI. Although\, DP algorithms have been used in several machine learning problems including risk minimization\, density estimation\, and hypothesis testing\, theoretical investigation of model selection under the DP framework remained somewhat scarce for high-dimensional data. This is concerning as model selection methods are heavily used in high-dimensional genetic data containing sensitive information that may compromise patient’s privacy\, thereby hindering data sharing and delaying scientific advancements. In this talk\, we propose a differentially private algorithm for model selection under the high-dimensional sparse regression setup. We adopt the well-known exponential mechanism for designing a sampling scheme that can identify the true set of features under desirable condition on the signal. In fact\, under low privacy regime\, we show that the minimum signal strength requirement exactly matches with the requirement under non-private setting. Moreover\, to achieve computational expediency over the intractable exponential mechanism\, we design a Metropolis-Hastings chain that quickly mixes to the target distribution to generate private estimates of the model. Therefore\, our research provides the first private algorithm for model selection that provably achieves high utility along with computational efficiency\, allowing efficient sharing of scientific discoveries to a broader community to practice open science.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2024 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station in northern Michigan\, Dr. Tadashi Fukami\, a professor of biology and Earth system science at Stanford University\, will give the Bennett Lecture in Mycology and Plant Biology.\n\nThe event on the Pellston campus is free and open to the public.\n\nFukami is an ecologist known for exploring complex plant and animal communities with small-scale experiments. At Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve in California\, he studies the interactions between sticky monkey flowers\, the hummingbirds and insects that pollinate them\, and the colonies of microbes that live in the nectar of these flowers.\n\nFukami’s talk at UMBS is titled “Alternative Community States in Floral Microbes.”\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS is one of the nation’s largest and longest continuously operating field research stations.\n\nLaboratories and cabins are tucked into more than 10\,000 acres along Douglas Lake just south of the Mackinac Bridge to support long-term climate research and education.
