Modernist Glass from the Polish Past DESCRIPTION:The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass)\, the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes. \n\nThe collectors\, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco\, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets\, antique shops\, and websites\, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. However\, changes in habitat structure and their associated light environments can also have substantial impacts on phenotypic evolution\, especially for organisms that use color for intra- and interspecific signaling. According to the sensory drive hypothesis\, adaptive signaling traits should use the colors that are most easily perceived in a given environmental context. However\, such environments are likely to change as a result of anthropogenic activities\, offering a powerful opportunity to test these predictions in natural populations. Using the Panamanian slender anole (Anolis apletophallus)\, which exhibits color polymorphism in its dewlap (categorized as a solid morph that is entirely orange and a bicolor morph that is mostly white with a small orange spot)\, we tested the relationship between morph frequencies and the light environment over nearly 40 years in a single population in Soberanía National Park\, Panama. Our findings supported the sensory drive hypothesis\, as dewlap morph frequencies were strongly correlated with light variables independently of neutral genetic structure. Moreover\, we found surprisingly limited evidence that morphs differ in morphology\, physiology\, sperm characteristics\, or behavior\, suggesting that the historical stability and persistence of this color polymorphism over time may be primarily driven by the light environment. These results provide a framework for understanding the relative importance of factors that drive color evolution under changing light environments\, especially as humans continue to alter habitat structure at unprecedented scales. This thesis develops planning and trajectory optimization methods that can adapt to new and unforeseen systems. The key to these methods is the ability of robots to learn from experience and reason about related uncertainty. Using modern machine learning and approximate probabilistic inference techniques\, the work in this thesis improves the ability of planning methods to do so. \n\nProbabilistic inference is useful in two ways. First\, by using a probabilistic framing\, probabilities can be used as a way of expressing confidence in our current models. I develop a method that learns to predict the uncertainty of a given dynamics model with a small amount of data collected online and avoids areas where the model is uncertain. I also propose an approach that learns a generative model of control sequences to complete a given task. I demonstrate that we can detect and adapt this generative model to situations where the environment differs from the training environments. \n\nSecond\, I incorporate probabilistic inference into the proposed methods by viewing planning itself as an inference problem. By framing planning as inference\, we construct probability distributions over trajectories. This framework allows me to develop a method that views constrained trajectory optimization as inference\, generating diverse sets of constraint-satisfying trajectories for completing manipulation tasks. This allows improved adaptation to online disturbances\, since at any given time\, there is a set of trajectories to select from. I demonstrate the effectiveness of this method on several different tasks\, including a 7DoF manipulator turning a wrench and a 16DoF multi-fingered hand turning a precision screwdriver. Upon entering the body\, delivery vehicles encounter extracellular and intracellular barriers. It is also unclear how carrier design features impact physiological interactions with biological systems\, highlighting the need for studies that elucidate these structure-function relationships. In this seminar\, I will describe our work on developing polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) to deliver therapeutic RNAs to a variety of tissues following local and systemic IV administration. We find that gene therapy can be significantly enhanced using a new class of polymeric vehicles consisting of poly(amine-co-ester) (PACE) polymers that are designed for safe and effective nucleic acid delivery. We have also developed tools to study nanomaterial-biology interactions in animal models\, including a high-throughput quantitative microscopy-based platform to measure circulation half-life and biodistribution in vivo. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. In this talk\, Dr. Carol Flannagan will explore “Apples to Apples” safety comparisons between ADS and human drivers. What would the perfect comparison look like? What has been done? What are the challenges to achieving the perfect comparison and what can be done about it? Finally\, what reasonable compromises can be made to prevent the perfect from becoming the enemy of the good?\n---\nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Flannagan has over 30 years of experience conducting data analysis and research on injury risk related to motor vehicle crashes. Her recent work on crash-avoidance technologies includes the application of statistical methods to estimate the effectiveness and potential benefits of crash-avoidance technologies as well as the safety assessment of automated driving systems (ADS). Dr. Flannagan’s work often involves the fusion and analysis of large state- and national-level databases\, including crash\, EMS\, and hospital data. These fused databases are useful in analyzing the effect of a wide variety of countermeasures on crash involvement and injury risk. Finally\, Dr. Flannagan has worked to develop and apply a wide variety of new and old statistical approaches\, such as natural language processing\, Bayesian methods\, and causal inference methods to address transportation data issues and answer transportation research questions. Born on Earthwork Farm in Lake City on April Fools Day 1980\, Bernard has been playing the trickster-bard ever since. \n\nSeth came to an understanding early that music\, poetry and art\, along with activism\, farming and earth science\, all intertwine into one great work. Probably because of the crowded farm dinner table\, where books of poetry\, tapes of jazz\, blues\, rock n’ roll and traditional music\, guests of all kinds\, and even the occasional raptor being rehabbed all shared space. Some folks call this “folklife\,” and in Seth’s music it’s as likely to show up through a Casio SK-1 or a Gretsch electric as much as a fiddle or high harmony. \n\n“Michigan proved to be the most richly varied region for folk music that I had ever visited\,” said Alan Lomax. Listening to these old voices and resisting the siren song of Nashville\, Austin\, or NYC\, Seth decided to root his work and his music in rural Michigan. That choice has led to a uniquely Michigan musical anatomy\, which ties ongoing inventiveness (most clearly on display with the Eggtones quadrilogy\, released from 2016 to 2018) to a commitment to a great live show\, whether on NPR or at SXSW or sharing a stage with the likes of John Prine\, Patty Griffin\, Daniel Johnston and Greg Brown. Most importantly\, it ties Seth and his music to a life of work on behalf of the youth\, equity\, water and community throughout the Great Lakes.\n\nEven as COVID limited live performance\, Seth used the time to produce two quarantine albums\, 2020’s lo-fi home recording Let Love Light the Way and 2021’s My Heart is My Home\, calling in performances from friends like Theo Katzman (Vulfpeck) and Dave Bruzza (Greensky Bluegrass). Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Elzada Clover and Lois Jotter\, U-M botanists who mapped the botany of the Grand Canyon in 1938. The book includes both of their ties to UMBS\, including Clover’s summer lectures about her grand adventures.\n\nSevigny is the science reporter at KNAU (Arizona Public Radio). She has worked as a science communicator in the fields of space exploration\, water policy and sustainable agriculture. Her stories have been awarded regional Edward R.
