SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Tours:Saturday Sampler Tour | Connections in the Ancient Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:We often study the ancient world as if each culture was completely separate—focusing on ancient Egypt\, Cyprus\, Rome\, Mesopotamia\, and Greece in isolation. In this tour\, we’ll explore the connections between these Mediterranean cultures resulting from such factors as trade\, migration\, and conquest. We’ll look at artifacts found in places we might not expect\, as well as evidence of the blending of cultures and traditions.\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. SUMMARY:Performance:Gearheads
DESCRIPTION:GEARHEADS is an original musical comedy\, which follows the goings-on at an auto\nrepair shop on a Saturday\, when the shop’s owner and service manager are away\,\nleaving the mechanics to run things. When a customer shows up needing a\nsimple repair\, she can’t get anyone to help her\, because the guys would rather be\nanywhere else than at work. They turn their break room into a pseudo frat\nhouse\, and over the course of the day\, love is lost and found\, the youngest\nmechanic has a coming-of-age experience\, and the shop becomes a place where\neveryone belongs.\n\nThe show was written by UM (and Michigan Marching Band) alumnus Dave\nNettleman (B.S.E.\, ’81\; M.S.E.\, ’97)\, who wrote it in the style of musicals of the\n1950’s and 60’s. The score has been professionally orchestrated\, and a 20-piece\npit orchestra will accompany the cast of 18.\n\nThe Lydia Mendelssohn theater is hosting the world debut\, which will take place\non Saturday\, August 10 at 7pm. There are also shows at 2pm and 7pm on August\n11. Please note\, since there is some intense drama and spilling of blood\, this\nshow is not recommended for young children.\n\nPlease visit https://mutotix.umich.edu/5065/5069 for more detail.

SUMMARY:Performance:Nadim Azzam w/ opener Mark Zhu
DESCRIPTION:A blend of hip-hop\, alt rock\, and jazz fusion that uplifts and inspires\n\nYou’ve got to hurt to heal. Through painfully honest self-reflection\, Nadim Azzam addresses depression\, addiction\, and the dysfunctional realities of our times with his songs rooted in hope and connectivity. A singer\, rapper\, and songwriter who makes his own beats and plays multiple instruments on his tracks\, Nadim has spent years evolving to where his music is today.\n\nA symbiosis of programmed drums and organic live instruments creates a warm\, sometimes surreal sonic environment. Smooth keys\, angular guitars\, and lush synth pads swim alongside melodic vocal hooks and bars that waste no time getting straight to the heart of things. The energy is chill\, friendly and open-hearted\, but the songs open up from this unassuming approach into statements of vulnerability and bracing honesty. Nothing is hidden\, and nothing is off-limits. Graceful vocals and smiling lyrical flows reveal a personal truth that’s sometimes almost hard to look at but always comes from a search for real understanding.\n\nMaking songs for the deep-thinkers\, the over-drinkers\, and other sensitive souls\, Nadim faces his own struggles head-on in hopes of offering some sense of solace to anyone else walking similar valleys of their own. These songs seek to remind that there’s more to life\, and that the pain any given individual feels can be transformed from a solitary torment into a vessel of connection.\n\nOpener Mark Zhu (pronounced “Joo”) addresses relationships\, mental health\, and identity with his songs rooted in healing and emotional vulnerability. A Chinese American singer-songwriter\, music producer\, mix engineer\, pianist\, and designer from Ann Arbor\, Mark is making waves at the University of Michigan. There\, he studies computer engineering by day and plays shows by night\, building his career as an aspiring recording and touring artist. As an award-winning pianist who has performed at Carnegie Hall three times\, Mark leverages his classical training to drive his production skills\, blending genres to create piano-driven ballads\, synth-driven R&B\, and fearless pop anthems.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:My Gender States
DESCRIPTION:On display at Lane Hall\, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In \"My Gender States\,\" Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister. \n\nUsing autoethnography\, Pinto created a one-person play (\"Marília\,\" 2015) and site-specific installation performance (\"The Realm of the Dead\,\" 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas\, gender states\, and his life experience—a story of the struggles\, fears\, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In \"Realm\,\" audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he\, a queer immigrant\, carried with him. \"My Gender States\" is a selection of materials\, images\, and texts from \"Marília\" and \"Realm\" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states\, gender confusion\, gender embodiments\, gender doubt\, and reactions to gender stigma. \n\nRogério M. Pinto (Brazilian\, American\, b. 1965\, Belo Horizonte\, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor\; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work\; and Professor of Theatre and Drama\, School of Music\, Theatre & Dance\, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.\n\nThe photographs used in \"My Gender States\" are by Emerson Granillo (American\, b. 1987)\; David Newton (American\, b. 1993)\; and Nicholas Williams (American\, b. 1994). The \"Realm\" assemblages featured in \"My Gender States\" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him\, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner. \n\n\"My Gender States\" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor\, 204 S State St) from January 23\, to August 13\, 2024. The exhibit is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.\n\nHosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

DESCRIPTION:Dates: Saturday June 8 - Sunday August 25\n\nReception: Saturday June 8\, 2pm-4pm MBG West Lobby\n\nWhat is play? Who’s to say? The animals of these fields and woods\, streams and ponds surely know. They take time each day to adventure and roam\, scamper and scout. The plants and trees excitedly join in. Some bend and sway and some glisten in rain. Perhaps each invites their friends from away to come and show them new ways of play. Let’s have a look and spend the day imagining what happens when we look away. An exploration of encounters real and imagined by local artist\, Nicole Ray. \n\nBio\n\nNicole Ray is an artist and illustrator living in Brighton\, Michigan. She grew up in a small beach town in New York with her toes deep in the sand and her head buried in books. Nicole creates a whimsical line of art prints and paper goods under the name Sloe Gin Fizz.\n\nFrom quirky animal and vegetable characters to nostalgia-filled interiors and calming views of nature\, Nicole’s hand-drawn scenes are highly accessible\, infused with a playful sense of humor and a strong narrative quality. \n\nNicole holds a BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts\, as well as a BA in History from Trinity College in Hartford\, CT. SUMMARY:Performance:Eric Whitmer (University of Michigan) plays the Baird Carillon with Sono Trio
DESCRIPTION:Sono Trio and Eric Whitmer will perform the 2024 carillon summer series finale with works for carillon\, flute\, and clarinet followed by a selection of solo works performed by Whitmer. Sono Trio is Abrielle Scott\, flute\, Olivia Harrison\, clarinet\, and Eric Whitmer\, percussion. The trio met and formed at Vanderbilt University as a part of the Contemporary Music Ensemble. They were the ensemble in residence at the 2022 Cortona Sessions for New Music. Comprised of three distinct voices\, Sono Trio represents the various interests and passions of its members. Abrielle is a Master’s student at the University of Miami. Olivia just finished her Master’s degree at the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. Eric is currently a Musicology Ph.D. Pre-Candidate at U-M and resident carillonist at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church.\n\nSono Trio seeks to explore and interrogate the mundane profundities of daily life. They champion a spirit of “play” as a radical act of community formation and philosophical inquiry. Sono views “play” as a central tenet of creativity and seeks to use this play as a methodology for self-reflection. As they play together\, they invite their audiences\, their collaborators\, and their communities to playfully engage with them and their musical expression.\n\nSummer carillon concerts are free and open to all\, including to families and their pets. The music happens rain or shine. Please note that concerts are scheduled on both Central and North Campus\, so plan your commute accordingly. When you arrive\, take a program from the stand near the tower and have a seat outdoors wherever you like\, or bring your own lawn chair or blanket (even your own picnic!). Concert staff wearing nametags will be available to answer questions or direct you to accessible restrooms and other facilities. For best acoustics\, sit far enough away from the tower to have a direct line of sight to the bells.\n\nPARKING\nThe nearest municipal parking structures are at 324 Maynard and at 510 E Washington. Street parking may be limited during construction in the vicinity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nicole Ray Art Exhibit: State of Play
Nicole and her mister live in a log house on a lake just north of Ann Arbor with a spoiled border collie named Stella and an ever-expanding network of critter friends.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Statistical Modelling of Spatially and Spatio-Temporally Dependent Data: Some Theoretical Results and an Application
DESCRIPTION:This dissertation is concerned with data exhibiting spatial and spatio-temporal dependence. It is based on three separate research works.\n\nOne chapter is concerned with the biogeochemical Argo data in the Southern Ocean\, which aims to collect measurements of oxygen\, temperature and salinity as well as other variables at varying depths in the ocean. The biogeochemical Argo data is important to improve our understanding of vital biogeochemical processes such as the biological carbon pump and air-sea CO2 exchanges\, monitor changes such as ocean deoxygenation and acidification\, and improve estimates of the carbon budget. We introduce and estimate a functional regression model for oxygen\, temperature\, and salinity data. Our model elucidates important aspects of the joint distribution of temperature\, salinity\, and oxygen across the entire ocean depth covered by the Argo data and improves location estimates of so-called oceanographic fronts\, which are of significant scientific interest in their own right. In addition\, it enables us to use the more pervasively available temperature and salinity data to recover biogeochemical data at locations where it is not observed.\n\nAnother chapter\, motivated by the work on the Argo data\, contributes to the solution of an open problem in the spatial statistics literature. Concretely\, we study the smoothness estimation of so-called Whittle-Matérn kernels on closed Riemannian manifolds. The smoothness of Matérn kernels controls\, for example\, optimal error bounds for kriging and posterior contraction rates in Gaussian process regression. However\, it has been an open problem whether their smoothness can always be consistently estimated. On closed Riemannian manifolds\, we show that their smoothness can be consistently estimated from the maximizer(s) of the Gaussian likelihood when the underlying data stem from point evaluations of a Gaussian process and\, perhaps surprisingly\, even when the data comprise evaluations of a non-Gaussian process. Moreover\, we generalize a well-known equivalence of measures phenomenon related to Matérn kernels to the non-Gaussian case by using Kakutani's theorem.\n\nThe remaining chapter extends this work to processes observed on the vertices of graphs. Due to increased tractability of the problem is this setting\, we are able to provide more complete results. In addition\, we establish connections to processes observed on smooth domains such as Riemannian manifolds. In this way\, we believe that our results for processes on graphs provide additional insights for such cases as well.

SUMMARY:Performance:Iris Dement
DESCRIPTION:The youngest of 14 children\, Iris DeMent was born in Paragould\, Arkansas\, and moved to California with her devoutly religious family when she was three. As a teenager she absorbed the country music of Loretta Lynn\, Merle Haggard\, and Johnny Cash\, as well as the folk classics of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. Her 1992 debut album\, \"Infamous Angel\,\" distilled these influences into a poetic yet down-to-earth songwriting style. With a heartfelt\, homespun voice that listeners recognize instantly\, Iris released some of the most powerful roots albums of the 1990s with the beautifully sparse \"My Life\" and the harder-edged \"The Way I Should.\" She has continued to make powerful and distinctive albums on her own schedule\, and her latest\, just out\, is “Workin’ on a World.” This striking collection of songs faces the modern world—as it is right now—with its climate catastrophe\, pandemic illness\, and epidemic of violence and social injustice. The album not only asks us how we can keep working towards a better world\, but implores us to love each other\, despite our very different ways of seeing. Her songs are her way of healing our broken inner and outer spaces.\n\nhttps://irisdement.com/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nicole Ray Art Exhibit: State of Play
Nicole and her mister live in a log house on a lake just north of Ann Arbor with a spoiled border collie named Stella and an ever-expanding network of critter friends.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Unsupervised Learning Approaches for Large-Scale Data
DESCRIPTION:Unsupervised learning approaches have gained significant prominence in the field of statistics due to their ability to analyze and interpret complex\, unstructured data without the need for labeled datasets. This paper primarily focuses on the areas of graphical models and clustering\, highlighting both their theoretical foundations and practical applications. In the domain of graphical models\, we introduce a novel method for constructing graphical models that effectively handle correlated replicates and unmeasured confounders. Specifically\, we model the correlation among replicates within each independent subject using a one-lag vector autoregressive model and address latent effects induced by unmeasured confounders through a piecewise constant assumption. For clustering\, we emphasize advanced techniques that account for overlapping clusters and explore the dynamics of these clusters over time. By applying a latent variable factor model\, we estimate time-varying overlapping clusters\, which can automatically match clusters across different time points. Furthermore\, we extend the overlapping clustering method to non-Gaussian data by employing generalized factor models within the clustering structure.

The band’s first three albums were released to critical acclaim and amassed widespread radio play across the world.\n\nTheir new album ‘For The Night’ further built upon this success\, charting at #3 in the Official Folk Album Chart and winning Album of the Year at the BBC Trad Music Awards 2022.\n\nhttps://www.elephantsessions.com/

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nicole Ray Art Exhibit: State of Play
Nicole and her mister live in a log house on a lake just north of Ann Arbor with a spoiled border collie named Stella and an ever-expanding network of critter friends.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nicole Ray Art Exhibit: State of Play
Nicole and her mister live in a log house on a lake just north of Ann Arbor with a spoiled border collie named Stella and an ever-expanding network of critter friends.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Clements Bookworm: Boy Soldiers and Military Power in the Civil War Era
DESCRIPTION:Enormous numbers of boys and underage youths served in the military throughout the American Civil War. Constituting roughly ten percent of Union troops and likely a similar proportion of Confederate forces\, these young enlistees significantly enhanced the size and capabilities of the armies on both sides. They also created a great deal of drama and chaos. They upended household economies by absconding with their vital labor power. They caused loved ones to suffer untold anxiety for their welfare. And they generated myriad encounters between ordinary people and the institutions of government\, at times resulting in dramatic showdowns between military and civilian authorities. How did the United States and the Confederacy\, respectively\, deal with the presence of so many young people in the ranks? The answers are often surprising and counterintuitive. As the U.S. federal government asserted greater authority over the state-based volunteers\, Union families in particular found it difficult if not impossible to recover their sons.
