SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.\n\n[The Hatcher Library will be closed December 21 to January 1.]

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Tours:Saturday Sampler Tour | Water\, Water Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:We cannot exist without water today\, and this was equally true in the ancient world. From hydrating our bodies and our crops to transporting goods across countries and even continents\, humans are dependent upon water in numerous ways. Join us for this Saturday Samper Tour to view some ancient artifacts that provide a window into how ancient people controlled and utilized water in their daily lives. See a water pipe inscribed with its donor’s name\, which was used to carry water through town\; a filter to keep those nasty little pebbles out of your drinking water\; and\, of course\, a kylix to enjoy your beverage at a Greek symposium.\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. SUMMARY:Performance:Kim Richey
DESCRIPTION:In January 2024\, Kim Richey found herself in Mexico\, gazing out at a sea of people singing along to “I’m Alright\,” one of her classic tracks. The three folks on stage with the veteran\, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter were also raising their voices in harmony. To her right sat Brandi Carlile\, to her left\, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Brandy Clark. The formidable foursome was participating in a songwriter’s round only half-jokingly dubbed “Titans of Americana” at Carlile’s female-forward Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival on the Riviera Maya in Mexico.\n\n“That was nuts looking out and seeing everybody arm-waving and singing along\,” says Richey\, still both incredulous and cheered by the memory of performing with that supergroup and later appearing alongside other Girls Just Wanna Weekend-ers Annie Lennox\, Lucius\, Allison Russell\, and Sarah McLachlan among others. “It was just like\, ‘wow’!”\n\nThe good news for fans of this particular Titan is there will soon be a whole new batch of songs to sing along with and arm wave to with the forthcoming release of her 10th studio album Every New Beginning. The 10 songs on Every New Beginning represent the full spectrum of the Ohio native’s gifts as both a revered songwriter who can leap from melancholy to mirthful in a single couplet — whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Brooks and Dunn\, Patty Loveless\, and Mary Chapin Carpenter — and owner of one of music’s truly celestial voices. \n\nThat voice\, which Brandi Carlile has cited as formative in crafting her own style\, is a widely sought after harmony instrument and has been featured on scores of albums including Jason Isbell’s acclaimed Southeastern\, Trisha Yearwood’s Everybody Knows\, Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams\, Reba McEntire’s Starting Over\, and Has Been by Capt. Kirk himself\, William Shatner\, among many others.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:In-person Arabic Placement test_August 20\, 2024 (10:00am-1:00pm)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary. b. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.c. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.Where can I view my results?a. Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.b. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 504\, 511 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) is offered in the Spring/Summer sessions. If you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Leveraging Phase Transitions to Establish Structure-Property Relationships: The Story Of Thermal Transport by Chemical Bonds
DESCRIPTION:Thermal transport in solid materials plays a crucial role in every modern application\, ranging from batteries to nuclear technology. In semiconductors\, both mobile electrons and lattice vibrations quantifiably contribute to heat transport. In these materials\, several engineering principles are known and largely used to tune heat conduction\, like nano-structuring\, doping\, etc. However\, the interplay of crystal structure\, symmetry and chemical bonding on thermal conduction are still not well understood. In this talk\, we will use layered AMX Zintl materials to look closely at how covalent/ionic bonds impact thermal transport properties. We leverage polymorphic phase transitions to systematically probe the relationship between covalent substructure\, elastic moduli\, and phonon scattering. Next\, we will look at electronic contributions to thermal conductivity and Lorenz number in a low lattice thermal conductivity system. The study will reveal the limitations of our current theoretical understanding of heat conduction by charge carriers\, while paving the way for another tuning parameter for thermal conductivity.\n\nBio: Ashiq Shawon is a PhD candidate in the materials science and engineering program at Michigan State University. His research focuses on thermal and elastic properties in thermoelectric materials. He is also currently interning at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory with the Neutron and X-ray scattering group. Before moving to East Lansing\, Ashiq received a master’s degree in materials science from Korea National University of Transportation\, South Korea and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology\, Bangladesh.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:In-person Arabic Placement test_August 21\, 2024 (10:00am-1:00pm)

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Nicole Ray Art Exhibit: State of Play
DESCRIPTION:Dates: Saturday June 8 - Sunday August 25\n\nReception: Saturday June 8\, 2pm-4pm MBG West Lobby\n\nWhat is play? Who’s to say? The animals of these fields and woods\, streams and ponds surely know. They take time each day to adventure and roam\, scamper and scout. The plants and trees excitedly join in. Some bend and sway and some glisten in rain. Perhaps each invites their friends from away to come and show them new ways of play. Let’s have a look and spend the day imagining what happens when we look away. An exploration of encounters real and imagined by local artist\, Nicole Ray. \n\nBio\n\nNicole Ray is an artist and illustrator living in Brighton\, Michigan. She grew up in a small beach town in New York with her toes deep in the sand and her head buried in books. Nicole creates a whimsical line of art prints and paper goods under the name Sloe Gin Fizz.\n\nFrom quirky animal and vegetable characters to nostalgia-filled interiors and calming views of nature\, Nicole’s hand-drawn scenes are highly accessible\, infused with a playful sense of humor and a strong narrative quality. \n\nNicole holds a BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts\, as well as a BA in History from Trinity College in Hartford\, CT. Nicole and her mister live in a log house on a lake just north of Ann Arbor with a spoiled border collie named Stella and an ever-expanding network of critter friends.

SUMMARY:Performance:Doolin'
DESCRIPTION:After three years of breakout touring at some of the biggest roots festivals in the United States and Canada\, and another three years locked out of the live performance world they have so ambitiously cultivated\, Doolin’\, France’s premiere practitioners of Irish and Celtic music\, return in early 2023 with a new album entitled CIRCUS BOY. \n\nRecorded in part in the US (Chicago\, Kansas City and Pittsburgh) during their 2019 tour\, the album was completed at the legendary Studio Ferber in Paris\, France\, under the direction of two legendary producers\, Olivier Lude and Patrice Renson\, both of whom have collaborated with some of the biggest names in French music. While their 2016 album drew its inspiration from the fusion of traditional Irish music\, French chanson\, and American roots music\, CIRCUS BOY is resolutely more adventurous\, as evidenced by their original compositions as well as by the added punch and sonic elements that were brought to the project by producers Lude and Renson. \n\nWilfried Besse’s vocals are supported as usual by the driving rhythm section of Josselin Fournel (percussion)\, Sébastien Saunié (bass) and Nicolas Besse (guitars)\, and the trad-Irish influence remains evidenced through the whistles of Jacob Fournel\, the bodhran of his brother\, Josselin\, and the nimble accordion playing of Nicolas’ brother\, Wilfried. But CIRCUS BOY represents a more powerful and bigger musical vision for the band\, made possible by the introduction of piano\, drums\, and brass as new sonic elements. That said\, the Irish music tradition is not complete without the presence of a fiddle or two\, and on CIRCUS BOY Doolin’ includes three of the best European fiddlers of the genre: Niahm Gallagher\, Niall Murphy\, and Guilhem Cavaillé\, himself a founding member of the band.\n \nhttps://www.doolin.fr/

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:An equator theorem for the 2-sphere
DESCRIPTION:We will focus on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms (and/or area-preserving homeomorphisms) of the 2-sphere. A tremendous amount of progress has been made in the study of these groups in the last few years\, but many problems remain\, including the Equator Conjecture. An equator on the 2-sphere is a simple closed curve whose complementary components have equal area. The Equator Conjecture predicts that for any positive K\, there are pairs of equators such that any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism sending one equator to the other must have Hofer norm larger than K. We will prove an alternative conjecture\, where we replace “Hofer norm” with “quantitative fragmentation norm”. To prove this\, we construct new quasimorphisms defined on the group of area-preserving homeomorphisms of the 2-sphere\, coming from methods inspired from mapping class groups and geometric group theory. Joint work with Yongsheng Jia.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:PC CARES- Learning Circles
DESCRIPTION:Members of the PC CARES team\, Dr. Lisa Wexler and Tara Schimdt\, will be providing (2) in person Learning Circles and (2) Virtual Learning Circles to our University of Michigan Community starting August 23\, 2024 and finishing the last Learning Circle during the Fall semester. PC CARES learning circles are meaningful conversations that empower our community to develop realistic\, feasible\, and locally-led solutions to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health. These circles provide an opportunity to envision actionable\, sustainable\, and research-informed strategies for suicide prevention. The program consists of four sessions\, each lasting 2-3 hours\, where participants explore concise pieces of research and engage in discussions across multiple sectors about what the research reveals and how these insights can be applied within our community. The core of PC CARES lies in its name—Promoting Community Conversations. This is not a traditional lecture model where an expert talks to an audience. Instead\, we believe that communities hold the key to addressing the complex issue of youth suicide through grassroots\, sustainable solutions that foster a shift from hopelessness to empowerment. For those interested\, we will be offering  a total of 8.5 Social Work CEU's through NASW and  8.5 \"Related\" CEU's through the Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) for the completion of all four Learning Circles.

Following the opening program\, we will create a path of faculty and staff from the Kinesiology building to the Trotter Center\, symbolizing our collective support and encouragement for their journey ahead. We need staff and faculty members who are willing to join us in this walk\, cheer on our students\, and help create a powerful visual representation of unity and support. Your presence will make a significant impact and show our students that they are valued and supported by the entire academic community. We will be led by a team of drummers who will guide students through the path to the Trotter Center. \n\nOnce the last student has entered the path\, we will follow and join students in Trotter for food and fellowship. There will be opportunities to connect with students\, share helpful information\, and build meaningful relationships.\n\n\n\nPlease join us Friday\, August 23\, 5pm\, Kinesiology Building (830 North University)\, Auditorium (Rm #2500). Transitioning by procession to Trotter Multicultural Center at 5:45pm. so that our students can see their village of support! Please RSVP by August 16th.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Claudettes
DESCRIPTION:Grounded in roots music yet pushing the boundaries of indie pop and rock\, the Claudettes are writing the most riveting chapter of their story right now. Pianist/songwriter Johnny Iguana formed the Claudettes with drummer Michael Caskey\, dazzling with the barrelhouse bravura of their 2013 debut Infernal Piano Plot…HATCHED! Another Yellow Dog Records release followed in 2015 featuring Nigerian-American singer Yana: No Hotel. Vocalist Berit Ulseth and bassist/vocalist Zach Verdoorn joined the band for Pull Closer to Me: Live in the Piano Room (2017) and Dance Scandal at the Gymnasium (2018\, helmed by Grammy-winning Black Keys producer Mark Neill).\n\nA new Claudettes era began when the band moved to Forty Below Records and released the acclaimed 2020 album High Times in the Dark and 2022’s The Claudettes Go Out! Now\, the Claudettes introduce Rachel Williams\, a six-foot Texan with a mohawk\, a big voice and powerful stage presence. \n\nOutside the Claudettes\, Johnny Iguana has earned a Blues Music Award nomination and Living Blues Award nomination for piano player of the year. Johnny co-founded indie-rock cult favorites Oh My God\, toured as pianist for blues stars Junior Wells and Otis Rush\, played piano on three Grammy-nominated albums and played on albums featuring Buddy Guy\, Junior Wells\, James Cotton\, Derek Trucks\, Gary Clark Jr.\, Shemekia Copeland\, Keb’ Mo’\, Mick Jagger\, Keith Richards and more. Johnny is also co-composer (along with JQ of the Q Brothers) of the score for the hit FX/Hulu series “The Bear\,” which won 10 Emmys and three Golden Globes in 2024. Johnny and JQ have also teamed up to produce new Claudettes tracks that are coming in 2024…\n\nhttps://theclaudettes.com/
