SUMMARY:Exhibition:Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World
DESCRIPTION:The exhibit \"Being Mixed Race in a Mono-racially Organized World: Interracial Identity in the U.S. and Around the World — What Research and Mixed Race People Tell Us\" is an exploration into the library's collections about the diversity of mixed race heritage. Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.\n \nA Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time. \n \nAs a free\, public museum\, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition\, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present\, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges\, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations\, race\, gender\, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.\n \nThis collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals\, as a museum\, and as a society\, connected to one another across space and experience.\n \nSo gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings\, to discuss their takes\, to learn\, to disagree. Gather to relax\, make a friend\, drink a coffee\, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full\, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.\n \nCurated by Félix Zamora Gómez Irving Stenn\, Jr. Fellow in Public Humanities & Museum Pedagogy\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bittersweet Bliss
DESCRIPTION:On view December 4–15\, 2024 at Stamps Gallery.\n\nWe proudly present an exhibition that swirls through nine personal narratives of struggle\, self-knowledge\, and fantasy respectively. The imagined paired with the gut led to a collection of works that overload the senses\, and indulge in a decadence of material and ornamentation. These works conjure memories of the hospital stay\, the museum visit\, the family gathering\, and inexplicable bouts of nostalgia from a lineage that precedes us. We long\, we dream\, we ail\, we labor\, we try and fail to control\, we are overwhelmed\, and yet\, we find bliss and comfort in the middle of it all. We know what we feel and we remember it. As our BA Seniors bid farewell to Stamps\, we share this gift of our work\, tied lovingly with a bow.\n\nThe Bachelor of Arts (BA) Senior Studio (ARTDES 401) is offered for Stamps BA students in their final year of study. The BA Senior Studio Exhibition offers these students the opportunity to build on the particular characteristics of the BA degree\, and focus on creating and exhibiting a culminating\, self-directed project. Students work independently or collaboratively to define a project plan with goals\, benchmarks\, and a timeline. \n\nThe BA Senior Studio Exhibition is a new tradition for Stamps\, with the inaugural show taking place in Fall 2024. These students and instructors have worked collaboratively to produce a fully self-directed show from start to finish\, emphasizing the skills and practices associated with producing professional exhibitions\, in addition to their studio work. \n\nFaculty:\nNick Tobier\, Professor\nMichelle Cieloszczyk\, GSI\n\nBA Student Artists and Designers:\nMaria D'Ambrosio\nDanielle de Coster\nEsha Kumar\nPeyton Messner\nMaya Moufawad\nRia Garcia Rivera\nBenjamin Nicolas Seguin \nScott Wallace Smith\nSiyu Zhong

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Tours:Saturday Sampler Tour | Food and Culture in the Ancient World
DESCRIPTION:At this time of year\, many of us find our thoughts focused on food. We prepare special foods to celebrate the holidays\, we think about foods that have been part of our family traditions for generations\, and we even sometimes make special foods to give as gifts. Far beyond the biological need to sustain life\, food and dining were also important features of the ancient cultures that lived around the Mediterranean. Foods—or images of food—were employed as economic tools\, as religious devices\, and as social mechanisms. In this tour\, we will look at artifacts that demonstrate the variety of ways that food was used in ancient Mesopotamia\, Egypt\, Greece\, and Rome. \n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event\, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Extended Open Hours: Bittersweet Bliss
DESCRIPTION:Join us to view Bittersweet Bliss: the 2024 BA Senior Studio Exhibition on Sunday\, December 15 from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. as we observe Extended Open Hours for Graduation Day.\n\nWe proudly present an exhibition that swirls through nine personal narratives of struggle\, self-knowledge\, and fantasy respectively. As our BA Seniors bid farewell to Stamps\, we share this gift of our work\, tied lovingly with a bow.

DESCRIPTION:Join exhibition curator David Choberka for a look at \"La Raza Art and Media Collective\, 1975 – Today\,\" the new UMMA exhibition that explores the vital contributions of Latinx artists to Michigan’s cultural landscape and the legacy these important historical works have had on campus and beyond. \n \nThis exhibition revisits the 50th anniversary of the RAM Collective—formed by a pioneering group of Latina/o students to voice the cultural and political expression of Chicano\, Hispanic\, and Latin American communities—by presenting the four original issues of its multimedia journal produced between 1976 and 1977. The journals are exhibited for the first time\, accompanied by their galley proofs and original artwork preserved at U-M’s Bentley Historical Library. SUMMARY:Presentation:Dissertation Defense: Reverse Hurwitz counts of genus 1 curves
DESCRIPTION:In this thesis\, we study a problem that is in a sense a reversal of the Hurwitz counting problem. The Hurwitz problem asks: for a generic target --- P^1 with a list of n points q_1\,...\,q_n --- and partitions sigma_1\,...\,sigma_n of d\, how many degree d covers C->P^1 are there with ramification profile sigma_i over q_i? We turn the problem on its head and ask: for a generic source -- an n-pointed curve (C\,p_1\,...\,p_r) of genus g -- and partitions mu\,sigma_1\,...\,sigma_n of d where mu has length r\, how many degree d covers C -> P^1 are there with ramification profile mu over 0 corresponding to a fiber p_1\,...\,p_r and elsewhere ramification profiles sigma_1\,...\,sigma_n?\n\nWhile the enumerative invariants we study bear a similarity to generalized Tevelev degrees\, they are more difficult to express in closed form in general. Nonetheless\, we establish key results: after proving a closed form result in the case where the ramification profiles sigma_1 and sigma_2 are \"even\" (consisting of 2\,...\,2)\, and we go on to establish recursive formulas to compute invariants where each ramification profile is of the form (x\,1\,...\,1). A special case for n fixed asks: given a generic d-pointed genus 1 curve (E\,p_1\,...\,p_d)\, how many covers (E\,p_1\,...\,p_d)->(P^1\,0) are there with k (unspecified) points of E having ramification index n? We establish a closed form answer for n=3 and expect exponential growth for n>3.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:Mind Matters: When Your Child Talks of Suicide or Cuts

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Ukrainian embroidered clothing is now officially celebrated with an annual Vyshyvanka Day observed throughout the world in May.\n\nTo see photos and read more about exhibited items\, visit https://myumi.ch/AZedA\n \n The embroideries and textiles exhibited are from the private collections of Arnie Klein\, Solomia Soroka\, Katerina Sirinyok-Dolgaryova\, and from the Ukrainian American Archives & Museum located in Hamtramck\, Michigan.\n \n The exhibit opens on September 5\, 2024\, in 1010 Weiser Hall\, 500 Church Street\, Ann Arbor. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:DHG Faculty Candidate Seminar | 12/19/24 | Kahn Auditorium 9am
DESCRIPTION:Juan Manuel Vazquez\, PhD\nNIA K99/R00 Postdoctoral Fellow\nNSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow\nUniversity of California\, Berkeley\n\nPlease join us at his seminar “Extensive Structural Variation and Longevity-Associated Adaptations in Nearctic Myotis Bats” on Thursday\, December 19th\, 2024\, at 9:00 am in the Kahn Auditorium – BSRB. There will be a reception with light refreshments to follow in the ABC seminar rooms.\n\nABSRACT\nThe genus Myotis is one of the largest clades of bats\, and exhibits some of the most extreme variation in lifespans among mammals. To study the evolution of longevity-associated traits\, we generated primary cell lines for over 28 species of bats\, and assembled near-complete diploid genome assemblies for 8 Myotis species. Using genome-wide screens of positive selection\, analyses of structural variation\, and functional experiments in primary cell lines\, we identify new patterns of adaptation contributing to longevity\, cancer resistance\, and viral interactions in bats. We find that Myotis bats have some of the most significant variation in cancer risk across mammals and demonstrate a unique DNA damage response in primary cells of the long-lived M. lucifugus. We also find evidence of extensive structural variation both within and between species\, including in genes central to stress response and viral immunity. Together\, our results demonstrate how genomics and primary cells derived from diverse taxa uncover the molecular bases of extreme adaptations in non-model organisms.

Dr. Elzada Clover contained multitudes\; she was a brazen botanist\, the first female University of Michigan botany professor\, the first female Matthaei Botanical Gardens curator\, the first scientist to document the flora of the remote Grand Canyon\, and along with her graduate assistant Lois Jotter\, they were first non-native woman to raft the entire length of the Colorado. This exhibit at Matthaei Botanical Gardens explores her remarkable journey and enduring contributions.
