Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. Threads of Tradition: The Art of Ukrainian Vyshyvanka
DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. Dr. Elzada Clover contained multitudes\; she was a brazen botanist\, the first female University of Michigan botany professor\, the first female Matthaei Botanical Gardens curator\, the first scientist to document the flora of the remote Grand Canyon\, and along with her graduate assistant Lois Jotter\, they were first non-native woman to raft the entire length of the Colorado. This exhibit at Matthaei Botanical Gardens explores her remarkable journey and enduring contributions.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. There are eight members of the gang\, most or all of whom are on hand for any given show: Annie Capps\, Kitty Donohoe\, Jan Krist\, Michael Hough\, David Tamulevich\, David Barrett\, Jim Bizer\, and Matt Watroba. Each an accomplished songwriter and performer in their own right\, they create a unique atmosphere of respect and support\, friendship and generosity finding new and unexpected ways to explore beyond their previous personal boundaries. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Celebrate and sing with two beloved Michigan musicians!\n\nLaz and San Slomovits\, the duo Gemini\, moved to Ann Arbor in 1973\, and have played The Ark every year since then. About twenty years ago\, San’s daughter\, Emily\, began joining them on stage\, necessitating a new name for their trio\, Gemily (Gemini + Emily). They’re known for their beautiful voices\, genetically tight harmonies\, a stage-full of instruments\, and songs and instrumentals ranging from traditional American and British Isles folk music\, to songs of the 60s Folk Revival\, klezmer tunes\, pop songs and their own originals. \n\nAbove all\, audiences have come to love their sense of ease and joy on stage. San and Laz will be celebrating their 152nd birthday with this show (they’re twins – you do the math) and will be joined by Emily plus their Good Mischief Band\, Mike Morrison on drums and Eric Fithian on bass.

DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.b. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.Where can I view my results?c. Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.d. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. DESCRIPTION:“But it’s a good challenge.” Learning often requires being challenged\, and as the quote from a University of Michigan student indicates\, being academically challenged can be rewarding and exciting. However\, stressful environments are not conducive to learning. \n\nThis Innovation Insights Research Talk will share findings from Claire Boeck’s interviews with 99 U-M undergraduates about challenging versus stressful courses and how students made sense of stress. Claire will also share recommendations for keeping courses in the “good challenge” category\, avoiding the stressful category\, and implications for equity.\n\nA Zoom link will be provided upon registration. DESCRIPTION:The act of embroidering and weaving designs onto cloth is deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions. Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Tools for interpretable machine learning or explainable artificial intelligence can be used to audit algorithms for fairness or other desired properties. In a \"black-box\" setting--one without access to the algorithm's internal structure--an auditor can only use model-agnostic methods based on varying inputs while observing differences in outputs. These include popular interpretability tools like Shapley values and Partial Dependence Plots. But such methods have important limitations that can impact audits with consequences for outcomes such as fairness. In high-stakes applications\, it may be worth the effort to use tools that can incorporate background information and be tailored for specific use-cases. We introduce promising ways to do this using the mathematics of causality\, with Causal Dependence Plots serving as an example. Causal interpretability illustrates a broader research agenda of a more human-centered data science\, empowering people with tools to consciously guide the directions of research and technology for our purposes.\n\nhttps://joshualoftus.com/

Through research\, narratives\, demographic data\, and a variety of visual and published materials\, explore multifaceted aspects of mixed race heritage with insights from many perspectives.\n\nThe 2020 U.S. Census illuminated a 276 percent increase in individuals who identify as \"two or more races\" since 2010. In recognition of the growing numbers of mixed race-identifying people at the University of Michigan\, throughout the country\, and across the globe\, we're excited to unveil this new exhibit — a unique exploration of changing demographics and intersectional identities.

Embellished clothing (sorochky)\, ritual cloths (rushnyky)\, and household textiles accompany a person from birth until death\, punctuating important life events in between. A variety of embroidery patterns are used throughout Ukraine\; some stitches are universally known\, while others are region-specific. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Red Summer: Racial Violence in the American Landscape\, 1917-1923
DESCRIPTION:The Red Summer portfolio represents the stories of various locations in the American landscape where racial violence (often characterized as “Race Wars” at the time) erupted between 1917 and 1923. These years of conflict reveal several aspects of racial anxiety that inform our contemporary experience\, including\, though not limited to\; racism\, fear of violent black revolt\, lynching\, poverty\, mass incarceration\, and competition for employment. The term “Red Summer” was first used by James Weldon Johnson to describe the violent attacks against black communities during 1919.  \n\nThough the events of the early twentieth century seem to be remote and fading apparitions of an American past\; my work is concerned with the power and influence of our shared historical narrative upon the present. The upheaval of Red Summer occurred approximately fifty years after the American Civil War\, fifty years before the height of the Civil Rights Era\, and three centuries after the first enslaved Africans arrived in English colonies that would become the United States. \n\nThe project combines photographs of the contemporary landscape made at or near the site of racial conflict with fragmented selections of contemporaneous newspaper reporting (1917-1923). In many cases\, the newsprint images include the surrounding stories or advertisements. The combination of the landscape photograph and the reproduction of newspaper fragments (which invade the contemporary with a narrative from the past)\, is a rupture and a conversation on the timeline between past and present.

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... SUMMARY:Exhibition:Michelle Hinojosa: Logcabins
DESCRIPTION:Stamps Gallery commissioned Michelle Hinojosa (MFA\, 2023) to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the Gallery. Hinojosa has created log cabin quilts to adorn the columns in front of Stamps Gallery. The log cabin quilts traditionally represent the warm hearth at the center of a home. This installation reflects on the interplay between home\, placemaking\, labor\, and intergenerational memories of migration. Rather than quilting cotton designed to softly embrace the body\, these quilts are sewn from outdoor grade\, UV-resistant polyester. The quilt is an ode to Hinojosa’s grandmother who illegally crossed the US/Mexico border holding her babies and her quilts. As she and her family drove across the United States to work in the fields of the Salinas Valley\, the quilts offered a safe space for her and her family. Hinojosa celebrates their resilience to her grandmother and elders while also drawing attention to precarity and violence experienced by refugees and migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in our present today.\nArtist’s bio:\nMichelle Inez Hinojosa is an artist\, educator\, and researcher whose work is informed by Indigenous and Latine/x/a/o studies. Born and raised in Texas\, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in both drawing and painting and art education with a minor in art history at the University of North Texas. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She works with quilting\, bead weaving\, embroidery\, jewelry\, transparent film installations\, painting\, ceramics\, and sculpture to honor and explore the history of migration in her family and humanize the current discourse around migration still occurring at the southern border. Alongside her artwork she maintains a writing practice to re-story\, re-make\, and re-claim the often subordinated narratives of Latinx\, Chicanx\, Mexican\, and Texican peoples. \n\nRecently\, Hinojosa was named an inaugural Creative Careers Artist in Residence at the University of Michigan\, she has also attended residencies at Mildred's Lane (Pennsylvania)\, Anderson Ranch Art Center (Aspen\, CO) and The Cedars Union (Dallas\, TX).

The Zoom call will be locked 10 minutes after the start of the presentation.\n\nEstablishing the New NCHS Rapid Surveys System -- Challenges and Lessons Learned\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for timely critical health and health care data from population-based surveys. Legacy surveys such as the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) could not meet this need due to both the disruption to data collection from the pandemic and the longer processing times prior to data release. To meet the continuing demand for relevant and timely data on emerging health topics\, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) now fields “rapid surveys” several times each year\, simultaneously using two commercial probability-sampled online survey panels. Each survey includes a broad range of questions based on current needs of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) programs\, so no two Rapid Surveys are alike. Statistical weighting methods leverage the strength of the NHIS to improve the reliability of estimates. Rapid Surveys use different methodology\, have fewer participants\, and have lower precision compared with other NCHS household surveys. However\, before each public data release\, NCHS conducts an extensive review of the quality of all data collected. This presentation will highlight goals\, key features\, data quality\, and implementation challenges of the NCHS Rapid Surveys System.\n \nStephen Blumberg is Director of the Division of Health Interview Statistics at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)\, a position he has held since 2017.  This Division collects\, processes\, analyzes\, and distributes household survey data from the National Health Interview Survey\, the National Survey of Family Growth\, and the new NCHS Rapid Surveys System.  Prior to assuming this role\, Dr. Blumberg was senior scientist and lead statistician for the National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs and the National Survey of Children’s Health.  Dr. Blumberg has served as a member of the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology\, President of DC-AAPOR\, Chair of the AAPOR Standards Committee\, and Chair of the NCHS Ethics Review Board.  Dr. Blumberg has a PhD in Social Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.

DESCRIPTION:We present two extensions of the Kyle-Back model and solve them with tools from optimal transport. In the first\, the informed trader receives her private information over time as opposed to all at once from the start of the trading period. We show that this dynamic information model can be recast as a terminal optimization problem with distributional constraints. Therefore\, the theory of optimal transport between spaces of unequal dimension comes as a natural tool. The pricing rule of the market maker and an optimality criterion for the problem of the informed trader are established using the Kantorovich potentials and transport maps. It turns out that the optimal strategy can be completely characterized by the market maker's filtering problem\, and in particular the Kushner-Zakai SPDE. In the second extension\, the signal is static\, but there is stochastic noise volatility along with multiple traded assets. We start with the causal optimal coupling between the fundamental price of the assets and the Wiener process which drives the noise trades. From this\, we derive a matrix-valued variational problem which characterizes the optimal rate by which the informed trader injects information into the market. This optimal rate completely characterizes the informed trader’s strategy and the market maker’s pricing rule. By considering dual formulation of this problem\, we discover the equilibrium minimizes an average of the initial market depth and the noise traders’ slippage costs.
