SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carlo Vitale Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:The William L. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

Snacks and beverages will be provided\; please feel free to bring lunch to the screening. \n\n\"The Loving Story\" is about Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter\, who traveled from Caroline County\, VA\, to Washington\, D.C. where it was legal to be married interracially. Upon returning to Virginia\, where interracial marriage was illegal\, the newlyweds were arrested\, tried\, and convicted of the felony crime of marrying interracially. Two young ACLU lawyers took on the Lovings case\, fully aware of the challenges posed. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in their favor on June 12\, 1967 and resulted in sixteen states being ordered to overturn their bans on interracial marriage.\n\nBrought to you by the Library Mixed Race and Interracial Family Community Employee Resource Group.

DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Observatory was once a hub of astronomical discovery that put the University of Michigan on the map as a world-class research institution. A century later\, it was an abandoned building with an uncertain future. From cornerstone to keystone\, from the first director to the people who saved it from destruction\, explore the life of a historic observatory 170 years in the making.\n\n\"Watcher of the Sky\" is being developed by student docents at the Detroit Observatory. The pompous Falstaff attempts to woo the wives of two wealthy merchants in order to increase his own personal fortune. Mistresses Page and Ford quickly discover his plot and conspire to make a mockery of\, and fool Falstaff. \n\nNow in its 23rd season\, Shakespeare in the Arb is outdoor theater at its finest. The play runs for approximately 3 hours and scenes occur in various locations within Nichols Arboretum. DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. The goal of the course is to give an introduction to the skills and resources needed to design and conduct a survey. \n\nThe Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques provides rigorous and high quality graduate level training in all phases of survey research. The noncredit courses are open to all. The courses are live online via Zoom. Registration and payment are required. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

The pompous Falstaff attempts to woo the wives of two wealthy merchants in order to increase his own personal fortune. Mistresses Page and Ford quickly discover his plot and conspire to make a mockery of\, and fool Falstaff. \n\nNow in its 23rd season\, Shakespeare in the Arb is outdoor theater at its finest. The play runs for approximately 3 hours and scenes occur in various locations within Nichols Arboretum. The natural landscape is an intentional component of each scene. \n\nAll tickets are general admission lawn style seating. Please bring a chair or a blanket. Audience members should be prepared for weather conditions\, periods of sitting\, standing\, and up to 3 miles of walking to various locations in the Arboretum. DESCRIPTION:For decades\, Kathleen Edwards has been a cornerstone of North American roots music.\n \nSince making her debut with 2002’s Failer\, she’s spent the 21st century occupying the grey area between genres\, swirling together her own mix of alt-country\, folk\, and heartland rock & roll. It’s a sound that has earned its creator more than a half-dozen Juno nominations\, as well as Top 40 success on both sides of the Canadian/American border. Now in her third decade as an artist\, Kathleen Edwards has done more than carry the torch of songwriting heroes like Tom Petty\, Neil Young\, and Lucinda Williams — she’s opened the door for others\, too\, inspiring a new generation of artists who\, like her\, blur the boundaries between genre and generation. \n\nA native of Ottawa\, Ontario\, Edwards was still in her early 20s when she released the critically-acclaimed Failer. The album’s warm\, woozy sound — crystallized on radio hits like “Six O’Clock News” — quickly turned her into one of the era’s alt-country heroes. From the very start\, though\, Edwards’ music seemed to exist somewhere out of time\, resisting categorization even as Failer received a Juno nomination for “Roots & Traditional Album of the Year.” \n\n“No one knew what to call my type of music back then\,” she says of those early years. “The Americana genre didn’t exist yet\, so they couldn’t categorize me. I just made the kind of music I wanted to make.” \n\nEdwards continued blazing her own trail with follow-up albums like Back to Me and Asking for Flowers. By the time Voyageur arrived in 2012\, Americana very much did exist as a genre\, and Edwards found herself riding a newfound commercial peak. The album reached Number 2 on the Canadian Albums Chart and Number 3 on Billboard’s Folk Albums chart. Even so\, a busy decade on the road had left her exhausted. After touring in support of Voyageur’s release\, Edwards left the music business altogether and moved to suburban Ontario\, where she opened a coffee shop called — defiantly — “Quitters.” \n\nWhen a phone call arrived from Maren Morris\, who was looking for songwriting partners for a new project\, Edwards jumped at the chance to collaborate. The two musicians co-wrote “Good Woman\,” which appeared on Morris’ Grammy-nominated album Girl in 2019. Back home in Canada\, Edwards continued to write new material\, eventually partnering with producer Ian Fitchuk for the album Total Freedom. Released in 2020\, the album expanded her sound and her audience\; Total Freedom didn’t just mark her return to the music industry. It was a rebirth\, too.\n\nWhat’s next? New music\, of course. She and Grammy-winner Jim Scott co-produced and released an album called Covers\, which pays homage to some of her songwriting heroes - Tom Petty\, REM\, John Prine\, Bruce Springsteen\, et al. Edwards remains a fan of “ripping guitar riffs and good songs\,” and she’s combining both into a follow-up album co-produced by Grammy-winners Jason Isbell and Gena Johnson that will showcase her legacy as well as her evolution. \n\nShe maintains a presence on the road\, too\, playing her own gigs one minute and sharing shows with her heroes — including Willie Nelson\, John Fogerty\, and Bob Dylan — the next.\n\n“The amount of things I’ve gone through might make someone else quit…but quitting doesn’t quite do it for me\,” she says. “I can’t help but want to write great songs\, connect with people\, and see what’s ahead. I don’t love looking behind\, even though it’s one of the ways we can see what we’ve done\, so I’m looking forward.”

DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Foiled seduction\, plans gone awry\, and plots to deliver comeuppance. The pompous Falstaff attempts to woo the wives of two wealthy merchants in order to increase his own personal fortune. Mistresses Page and Ford quickly discover his plot and conspire to make a mockery of\, and fool Falstaff. \n\nNow in its 23rd season\, Shakespeare in the Arb is outdoor theater at its finest. The play runs for approximately 3 hours and scenes occur in various locations within Nichols Arboretum. The natural landscape is an intentional component of each scene. \n\nAll tickets are general admission lawn style seating. Please bring a chair or a blanket. Audience members should be prepared for weather conditions\, periods of sitting\, standing\, and up to 3 miles of walking to various locations in the Arboretum. Expect inclines and slopes\, staircases\, grass\, gravel\, and mulch as part of the terrain.  All tickets are held at Will Call\, Nichols Arboretum Visitor Center\, 1610 Washington Heights. Robert Jones will be presented with the 2025 Michigan Heritage Award\, Michigan State University.\n\nStoryteller\, preacher\, musician\, writer\, educator and speaker\n\nRev. Robert Jones\, Sr. has been a professional musician for more than forty years. The legendary blues man\, Willie Dixon encouraged him to bring his music into schools over 35 years ago\, and The National Blues Foundation recognized his work as a leading blues educator in 2007. An award-winning multi-instrumentalist\, he is accomplished on guitar\, harmonica\, mandolin\, banjo\, fiddle and ukulele. Robert is the former host of the award-winning radio programs “Blues from the Lowlands” and “Deep River” broadcast on Detroit Public Radio’s WDET-FM Detroit. He has taught music history courses at Wayne State University in Detroit\, and he serves as a member of the affiliate faculty at Boston’s Berklee School of Music.

DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Foiled seduction\, plans gone awry\, and plots to deliver comeuppance. The pompous Falstaff attempts to woo the wives of two wealthy merchants in order to increase his own personal fortune. Mistresses Page and Ford quickly discover his plot and conspire to make a mockery of\, and fool Falstaff. \n\nNow in its 23rd season\, Shakespeare in the Arb is outdoor theater at its finest. The play runs for approximately 3 hours and scenes occur in various locations within Nichols Arboretum. The natural landscape is an intentional component of each scene. \n\nAll tickets are general admission lawn style seating. Please bring a chair or a blanket. Audience members should be prepared for weather conditions\, periods of sitting\, standing\, and up to 3 miles of walking to various locations in the Arboretum. Expect inclines and slopes\, staircases\, grass\, gravel\, and mulch as part of the terrain.  All tickets are held at Will Call\, Nichols Arboretum Visitor Center\, 1610 Washington Heights. DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately two hours and a half in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other two portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.\nHow is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the Spring/Summer orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold\, silver\, or platinum. Aki will be using gold for the demonstration.\n   \n   Aki Motoyama is a Kintsugi artist based in Japan. Born in Tokyo\, Aki developed a passion for arts and crafts at a young age and became deeply interested in traditional Japanese crafts after moving to the United States. She earned her BFA degree from the U of M School of Arts and Design and her Master of Design degree from Domus Academy in Milan\, Italy.\n   \n   Aki honed her skills in Kintsugi and Makie techniques under the guidance of several esteemed artists. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Tokyo.\n   \n   Today\, Aki repairs her clients' pottery by taking orders online\, ensuring each piece is restored with meticulous care. She communicates deeply with her clients to customize the repair method for their cherished belongings. She earned her BFA degree from the U of M School of Arts and Design and her Master of Design degree from Domus Academy in Milan\, Italy.\n\nAki honed her skills in Kintsugi and Makie techniques under the guidance of several esteemed artists. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across Tokyo.\n\nToday\, Aki repairs her clients' pottery by taking orders online\, ensuring each piece is restored with meticulous care. She communicates deeply with her clients to customize the repair method for their cherished belongings. They will perform at the O&W Grove Stage on Ingalls Mall.\n   \n   This summer at A2SF\, experience a Japanese Bon Odori Festival with Sakura\, a Japanese instrumental group! Named after the word for cherry blossom\, this group of artists hails from hometowns in both Japan and the Midwest. As Sakura\, they come together to share both traditional folk music and the soundscapes of traditional music as expressed through the compositions of their mentor\, Yamada Mizue from Kanazawa\, Japan. From the dynamic sound of taiko drums to the melodies of festival music and the traditional Lion Dance known as the Shishimai\, the live performance is a true celebration of the art of traditional Japanese culture.\n   \n   After the concert\, the group will host a Bon Odori Dance Festival for the audience to join! People of all ages are welcome to participate\, standing or sitting\, as the group coordinates simple dance movements to a festive beat. Bon Odori is the name for a popular style of dancing during the Bon Festival season in Japan\, when the community comes together to celebrate family. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Long-Term Maintenance of Regenerative Agriculture Enhances Climate Resiliency and Supports Soil Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Regenerative agriculture is often associated with restoring key ecosystem services such as nutrient retention\, erosion prevention\, and climate resiliency. There is also an expectation that regenerative agriculture will improve soil biodiversity\, which has important implications for overall ecosystem functioning. Despite these expectations\, there are several unknowns regarding the long-term maintenance of regenerative agriculture and how consistent management may impact soil carbon accrual\, soil food webs\, and climate resiliency.\n\nAs part of the 2025 Summer Lecture Series\, Dr. Christine Sprunger will outline the case for integrating free-living nematodes into the soil health framework to better understand sustainability goals and climate resiliency within agroecosystems.\n\nSprunger is an associate professor of soil health at Michigan State University and is currently serving as interim associate director at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station (KBS).\n\nIn her talk at UMBS\, Sprunger will explore how soil carbon and free-living nematode communities shift through time after almost 30 years of regenerative agriculture management. She will demonstrate how nematodes are critical bioindicators of drought events within agroecosystems\, discuss the socio-ecological aspects of regenerative agriculture\, and present ways to engage farmers on climate resiliency topics.\n\nSprunger is a faculty member in the Department of Plant\, Soil\, and Microbial Sciences at MSU and is based at KBS. She also is a member of MSU’s Plant Resilience Institute. Her research focuses on the intersection of agriculture and the environment\, where she investigates how climate change impacts crop production\, nutrient cycling\, soil food webs\, and rhizosphere dynamics. In addition\, much of her work addresses how crop diversity\, perenniality\, and reduced tillage contribute to important ecosystem services such as soil carbon sequestration and nitrogen use efficiency. Sprunger also conducts interdisciplinary research with social scientists to understand farmer perceptions of soil health and climate adaptation. \n\nSprunger holds a Ph.D. in crop and soil sciences and ecology\, evolutionary biology\, and behavior from Michigan State University\, and she received both a B.S. in forest resources and a B.A. in environmental studies from the University of Washington with a minor in human rights.\n\nThe U-M Biological Station — the largest of U-M's campuses at more than 10\,000 forested acres surrounded by lakes — is one of the nation's largest and longest continuously operating field research stations.\n\nFounded in 1909\, the Biological Station supports long-term research and education. It is where students and scientists from across the globe live and work as a community to learn from the place.\n\nThe Summer Lecture Series is a tradition at UMBS\, where we explore scientific topics with distinguished guest speakers from across the country so our community can learn about our natural world.\n\nThe free\, public talks are on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. in the spring and summer in Gates Lecture Hall at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, located at 9133 Biological Rd. in Pellston\, Michigan — about 20 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.

DESCRIPTION:Pop hooks\, alt-rock guitars\, and sharp songwriting\n\nWith a reputation for spectacular live performances\, the genesis of multi-platinum artist The Verve Pipe can be traced back to the early 90s when the principal members of two rival Michigan bands joined forces. After releasing two independent albums\, I’ve Suffered A Head Injury and Pop Smear\, the group quickly garnered a regional following for its textured rock songs distinguished by innovative arrangements\, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals.\n\nThe success of both albums attracted the attention of RCA Records\, which released their platinum major label debut Villains in 1996. The album featured the radio hit ‘Photograph’ and the #1 single ‘The Freshmen\,’ one of the most successful multi-format tracks of 1997 and winner of an ASCAP Pop Award. Their follow-up release\, the critically acclaimed self-titled LP The Verve Pipe\, featured ‘Hero\,’ a Top 15 hit at Modern Rock radio.\n\nIn 2001\, RCA released Underneath\, which produced the singles ‘Happiness Is’ and ‘Never Let You Down\,’ one of the most played songs for Adult Top 40 and Modern A/C radio that year. The album also included ‘Colorful\,’ the emotive ballad featured in the film and soundtrack Rock Star\, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston and also co-starring lead singer Brian Vander Ark in his first major film role.\n\nIn addition to their success on radio\, TV and film\, sold-out concert dates throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe and Australia\, features in Spin and Rolling Stone and videos on MTV and VH1\, the band have made numerous television appearances\, including ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ and ‘Late Night With David Letterman.’\nAfter an eight year hiatus\, The Verve Pipe were approached to submit an original song for a compilation album of children’s music. That session inspired A Family Album\, their critically acclaimed introduction to the world of children’s music\, as well as their follow up release\, Are We There Yet?
