There is also an expectation that regenerative agriculture will improve soil biodiversity\, which has important implications for overall ecosystem functioning. Despite these expectations\, there are several unknowns regarding the long-term maintenance of regenerative agriculture and how consistent management may impact soil carbon accrual\, soil food webs\, and climate resiliency.\n\nAs part of the 2025 Summer Lecture Series\, Dr. Christine Sprunger will outline the case for integrating free-living nematodes into the soil health framework to better understand sustainability goals and climate resiliency within agroecosystems.\n\nSprunger is an associate professor of soil health at Michigan State University and is currently serving as interim associate director at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station (KBS).\n\nIn her talk at UMBS\, Sprunger will explore how soil carbon and free-living nematode communities shift through time after almost 30 years of regenerative agriculture management. She will demonstrate how nematodes are critical bioindicators of drought events within agroecosystems\, discuss the socio-ecological aspects of regenerative agriculture\, and present ways to engage farmers on climate resiliency topics.\n\nSprunger is a faculty member in the Department of Plant\, Soil\, and Microbial Sciences at MSU and is based at KBS. She also is a member of MSU’s Plant Resilience Institute. Her research focuses on the intersection of agriculture and the environment\, where she investigates how climate change impacts crop production\, nutrient cycling\, soil food webs\, and rhizosphere dynamics. In addition\, much of her work addresses how crop diversity\, perenniality\, and reduced tillage contribute to important ecosystem services such as soil carbon sequestration and nitrogen use efficiency. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. Our primary goal has been to isolate molecules in rare electronic states and to provide a link between structure and function. We have now initiated efforts aimed at understanding the chemical reactivity of these boron-containing rings\, including their reactivity with energy-relevant small molecules. Recently\, we discovered that borenium ions can be tailored such that the serve as viable stimuli-responsive materials\, possessing thermochromic and/or luminescent properties. However\, these devices are unable to perform positive work at the knee\, limiting the ability of the user to perform activities like walking\, stair ascent\, and sit-to-stand. Powered prosthetic devices can address these limitations by providing controlled positive work at the joint and allowing for active control of joint position\, reducing compensatory behaviors and opening up the door to biomimetic control approaches. Despite these benefits\, powered prostheses are not ubiquitous due to weight\, ergonomics\, and cost\, as well as the lack of control architectures that reduce the need for user-specific tuning and give a sense of volition.\n\nIn this presentation\, I focus on overcoming these limitations to the design and control of transfemoral prostheses through the development of data-driven\, indirect-volitional controllers for stair locomotion and stair-walk transitions\, and the design optimization and implementation of a light-weight\, highly backdriveable knee prosthesis. Through this work\, I successfully unify a field-leading hybrid kinematic impedance control framework across multiple activities of daily living. I also construct and validate a quasi-direct drive knee prosthesis\, weighing ~100 grams less than the leading consumer powered knee prosthesis with double the torque-density.\n\nBy creating data-driven\, indirect-volitional control paradigms that can achieve biomimetic biomechanics for multiple activities of daily living\, and developing a light-weight\, quasi-direct drive knee prosthesis capable of biomimetic biomechanics\, I aim to showcase the benefits and potential of fully-powered prostheses\, breaking down the barriers to their real-world use. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. They are used by millions of birds each year to breed\, rest\, refuel and overwinter. Human communities also value these areas for subsistence\, cultural\, commercial\, and recreational activities. Despite the benefits they provide\, estuarine habitats are being lost at accelerating rates.\n\nTo address this need\, a one-year catalyst project connected geographically distinct reserves in the Pacific/Western United States with shared migratory bird species and a common interest in elevating the role of Indigenous Knowledge and management practices in coastal conservation. The project – whose team included five reserves\, their local management and cultural partners\, and Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture – explored applications and built on existing frameworks for weaving together conventional science and Indigenous Knowledge\, research\, and cultural values to enhance stewardship of estuarine habitats and coastal watersheds. The pompous Falstaff attempts to woo the wives of two wealthy merchants in order to increase his own personal fortune. Mistresses Page and Ford quickly discover his plot and conspire to make a mockery of\, and fool Falstaff. \n\nNow in its 23rd season\, Shakespeare in the Arb is outdoor theater at its finest. The play runs for approximately 3 hours and scenes occur in various locations within Nichols Arboretum. The natural landscape is an intentional component of each scene. \n\nAll tickets are general admission lawn style seating. Please bring a chair or a blanket. Audience members should be prepared for weather conditions\, periods of sitting\, standing\, and up to 3 miles of walking to various locations in the Arboretum. M2P2 operates much like a professional company\, and it champions Midwest talent in a supportive\, community-based environment\, where artists 18+ are able to advance their technical and performance skills\, while enriching their network with exceptional experiences and access to working choreographers. After releasing two independent albums\, I’ve Suffered A Head Injury and Pop Smear\, the group quickly garnered a regional following for its textured rock songs distinguished by innovative arrangements\, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals.\n\nThe success of both albums attracted the attention of RCA Records\, which released their platinum major label debut Villains in 1996. The album featured the radio hit ‘Photograph’ and the #1 single ‘The Freshmen\,’ one of the most successful multi-format tracks of 1997 and winner of an ASCAP Pop Award. Their follow-up release\, the critically acclaimed self-titled LP The Verve Pipe\, featured ‘Hero\,’ a Top 15 hit at Modern Rock radio.\n\nIn 2001\, RCA released Underneath\, which produced the singles ‘Happiness Is’ and ‘Never Let You Down\,’ one of the most played songs for Adult Top 40 and Modern A/C radio that year. The album also included ‘Colorful\,’ the emotive ballad featured in the film and soundtrack Rock Star\, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston and also co-starring lead singer Brian Vander Ark in his first major film role.\n\nIn addition to their success on radio\, TV and film\, sold-out concert dates throughout the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe and Australia\, features in Spin and Rolling Stone and videos on MTV and VH1\, the band have made numerous television appearances\, including ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno’ and ‘Late Night With David Letterman.’\nAfter an eight year hiatus\, The Verve Pipe were approached to submit an original song for a compilation album of children’s music. That session inspired A Family Album\, their critically acclaimed introduction to the world of children’s music\, as well as their follow up release\, Are We There Yet?
