Therefore\, these types of molecules are currently being studied for various optoelectronic applications\, including organic light-emitting diodes. We have synthesized\, structurally characterized\, and assessed the aromaticity and optical properties of unusual borafluorene and borepin cations\, radicals\, and anions. Our primary goal has been to isolate molecules in rare electronic states and to provide a link between structure and function. We have now initiated efforts aimed at understanding the chemical reactivity of these boron-containing rings\, including their reactivity with energy-relevant small molecules. Recently\, we discovered that borenium ions can be tailored such that the serve as viable stimuli-responsive materials\, possessing thermochromic and/or luminescent properties. This lecture will cover our most recent results in these research areas\, including new studies on boraacenes and π-extended multi-boron-doped systems. Gregg\n\nZoom Link: \nhttps://umich.zoom.us/j/95234083146\n\nAbstract: \nConventional passive microprocessor-controlled knee and ankle prostheses improve lower-limb amputee mobility and quality of life through their simple hand-tuned control and lightweight mechanical design. However\, these devices are unable to perform positive work at the knee\, limiting the ability of the user to perform activities like walking\, stair ascent\, and sit-to-stand. Powered prosthetic devices can address these limitations by providing controlled positive work at the joint and allowing for active control of joint position\, reducing compensatory behaviors and opening up the door to biomimetic control approaches. Despite these benefits\, powered prostheses are not ubiquitous due to weight\, ergonomics\, and cost\, as well as the lack of control architectures that reduce the need for user-specific tuning and give a sense of volition.\n\nIn this presentation\, I focus on overcoming these limitations to the design and control of transfemoral prostheses through the development of data-driven\, indirect-volitional controllers for stair locomotion and stair-walk transitions\, and the design optimization and implementation of a light-weight\, highly backdriveable knee prosthesis. Through this work\, I successfully unify a field-leading hybrid kinematic impedance control framework across multiple activities of daily living. I also construct and validate a quasi-direct drive knee prosthesis\, weighing ~100 grams less than the leading consumer powered knee prosthesis with double the torque-density.\n\nBy creating data-driven\, indirect-volitional control paradigms that can achieve biomimetic biomechanics for multiple activities of daily living\, and developing a light-weight\, quasi-direct drive knee prosthesis capable of biomimetic biomechanics\, I aim to showcase the benefits and potential of fully-powered prostheses\, breaking down the barriers to their real-world use. They are used by millions of birds each year to breed\, rest\, refuel and overwinter. Human communities also value these areas for subsistence\, cultural\, commercial\, and recreational activities. Despite the benefits they provide\, estuarine habitats are being lost at accelerating rates.\n\nTo address this need\, a one-year catalyst project connected geographically distinct reserves in the Pacific/Western United States with shared migratory bird species and a common interest in elevating the role of Indigenous Knowledge and management practices in coastal conservation. The project – whose team included five reserves\, their local management and cultural partners\, and Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture – explored applications and built on existing frameworks for weaving together conventional science and Indigenous Knowledge\, research\, and cultural values to enhance stewardship of estuarine habitats and coastal watersheds. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. We then extend these median filters to an anisotropic wetting/dewetting scenario where one of the three phases remains stationary while triple junctions form at their intersections. This scenario serves as a testbed for examining complex triple junction conditions due to anisotropy. Numerical evidence supports the correct angle condition at these junctions\, encouraging further exploration into fully anisotropic multiphase flow dynamics.\n\nAdditionally\, building on this connection between level set methods and threshold dynamics\, we develop a median filter scheme that is second-order accurate in time and monotone\, ensuring convergence to viscosity solutions within established theoretical frameworks. As part of the 2025 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, the researcher and professor emeritus of neurology at U-M will discuss air pollution from fossil fuels\, the effects of air pollution on human health\, infections related to climate change\, other health consequences of climate change\, and what we as citizens and scientists can do.\n\nJunck earned bachelor’s degrees in physics and philosophy from the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana and his M.D. degree from the University of Michigan. His residency training in neurology was at Stanford University\, and he completed research fellowship training in position emission tomography at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He served on the U-M faculty at the University of Michigan Medical School for 39 years and directed the Brain Tumor Program for over two decades.
