SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Foiled seduction\, plans gone awry\, and plots to deliver comeuppance. The pompous Falstaff attempts to woo the wives of two wealthy merchants in order to increase his own personal fortune. Mistresses Page and Ford quickly discover his plot and conspire to make a mockery of\, and fool Falstaff. \n\nNow in its 23rd season\, Shakespeare in the Arb is outdoor theater at its finest. The play runs for approximately 3 hours and scenes occur in various locations within Nichols Arboretum. The natural landscape is an intentional component of each scene. \n\nAll tickets are general admission lawn style seating. Please bring a chair or a blanket. Audience members should be prepared for weather conditions\, periods of sitting\, standing\, and up to 3 miles of walking to various locations in the Arboretum. Expect inclines and slopes\, staircases\, grass\, gravel\, and mulch as part of the terrain.  All tickets are held at Will Call\, Nichols Arboretum Visitor Center\, 1610 Washington Heights. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carlo Vitale Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Analytical and Computational Approaches to Nonlinear Dynamics in Enzyme Kinetics and Sleep-Wake Regulation
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nReduced models for enzymatic mechanisms\, widely used in real-world biochemical applications\, are often governed by parametric restrictions that determine their accuracy and applicability. The work in this thesis focuses on addressing challenges in analyzing reduced models of two cornerstone enzymatic mechanisms: Michaelis–Menten (MM) mechanism and Intermolecular Autocatalytic Zymogen Activation (IAZA) mechanism. For the MM model\, we investigate the parametric conditions under which the standard quasi-steady-state approximation (QSSA) is not only valid but also predominant among competing reductions\, a distinction that guides optimal model selection for experimental design. Using the theory of fences and anti-funnels\, we derive sharp error bounds for the standard QSSA and introduce a new and more restrictive qualifier that ensures its predominance. For the IAZA model\, we analyze a perturbation regime that exhibits a dynamic transcritical bifurcation. Since classical reduction theory fails at bifurcations\, we implement the blow-up method to estimate the solutions and validate the well-known QSSA(s) near the bifurcation. \n\nA second focus of this thesis is the development of a gradient-based optimization framework for fitting noisy differential equation models of neuronal sleep-wake behavior to discrete sleep score data for rodents. Leveraging automatic differentiation and maximum mean discrepancy\, we optimize a physiologically motivated flip-flop model of interacting neuronal populations by incorporating exogenous noise. Our results show that modeling noise in both neural firing activity and the homeostatic sleep drive is essential to replicate the complex\, polyphasic structure of rodent sleep.

Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:All singers are welcome to these annual\, popular choral reading sessions. Come as you are to this no-audition\, no-performance evening of memorable music-making\, and join up to 250 singers from the region to sing great choral repertoire with UMS Choral Union music director Scott Hanoian and outstanding soloists. Rehearse portions of the score during the first half\, break for refreshments\, and then reconvene to sing through the entire work. DESCRIPTION:World class songwriting\n\nAfter a series of indie releases and growing buzz in the Atlanta music scene\, Shawn Mullins’ critical and commercial breakthrough came when 1998 Soul’s Core shot him to fame on the strength of Grammy-nominated No. 1 hit\, “Lullaby” followed by AAA/Americana No. 1 hit “Beautiful Wreck” from 2006’s 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor. His song\, “Shimmer” was used in promotion of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was included on the Dawson’s Creek soundtrack. His co-write “All in My Head” from 2008’s Honeydew was featured in episode one of the hit TV sitcom “Scrubs.” Mullins also co-wrote the Zac Brown Band’s No. 1 country tune “Toes.” In early 2002\, he formed supergroup The Thorns with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge. “No Blue Sky” from the resulting album\, is a modern day classic. \n\nFor the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough album\, Shawn revisited the music of Soul’s Core by recording two new versions of the album. He calls this Soul’s Core Revival. This is not a remix or a remaster of the original\, but rather brand new recordings with new arrangements of the songs – one album is stripped down solo performances\, some on guitar\, some on piano and maybe one a cappella and the second is a new studio recording with his full band\, Soul Carnival.

DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Her transatlantic network of important friends spanned the political spectrum of her time and place\, and her astute eye and brilliant letters kept them well informed.\n\nA woman of great influence in a time of influential women (Catherine the Great and Marie-Antoinette were contemporaries)\, Angelica was at the red-hot center of American history at its birth: in Boston\, when General Burgoyne surrendered to the revolutionaries\; in Newport\, receiving French troops under the command of her soon-to-be dear friend Marquis de Lafayette\; in Yorktown\, just after the decisive battle\; in Paris and London\, helping to determine the standing of the new nation on the world stage.\n\nShe was born as Engeltje\, a Dutch-speaking\, slave-owning colonial girl who witnessed the Stamp Act riots in the Royal British Province of New York. She came of age under English rule as Angelica\, the eldest daughter of the most important family on the northern part of Hudson’s River\, raised to be a domestic diplomat responsible for hosting indigenous chiefs and enemy British generals at dinner. DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit. DESCRIPTION:Chair: Dimitra Panagou\n\nZoom passcode: hri\n\nAbstract:\nThis dissertation investigates how humans can effectively supervise autonomous systems—particularly multi-robot teams—across a range of control configurations and interface designs. While much of robotics research focuses on either fully manual control or fully autonomous operation\, real-world applications increasingly demand a middle ground\, where perception\, decision-making\, and control are distributed between human and machine. Through four case studies\, this work examines supervisory scenarios that vary in control authority and information flow: from autonomous robot formations that adapt to uncertain human motion\, to mixed reality interfaces for spatial command\, to passive haptic feedback for improving takeover performance\, and finally to collaborative interventions for failure recovery. Taken together\, these studies contribute new tools\, insights\, and empirical evidence toward designing supervision not as a fallback mode\, but as an active\, embodied\, and scalable form of human–robot interaction.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative showcases the depth of artistic excellence and merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan and recognizes the creativity\, rigor and innovation of artists and collaboratives working in the region\, inspiring the next generations of artists in our state.\nIn the of fall of 2024\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. \nA shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Juana Williams\, art curator and writer based in Detroit\, Michigan\; Melinda Zacher Ronayne\, former director of visual arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts\; and Parisa Ghaderi\, assistant professor of graphic design at Shoreline Community College and winner of the 2023 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award. \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2025:\nConor Fagan obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. He has had solo shows with My Pet Ram and Gitler &amp\; in NYC\, and most recently has been featured and won an award at The 2025 Regional Show at the Dennos Museum and Cultural Center. He has works in numerous public collections including the Waterton - Global corporate collection\, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in Baei St Paul. His work has been collected privately both nationally and internationally. Currently\, he teaches and lives outside of Traverse City at Interlochen Arts Academy\, nestled among the trees\, rivers\, and lakes of northern Michigan.Katie Mongoven/上秋莲 is a Chinese American fiber artist from Washington\, DC\, based in Detroit\, MI. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &amp\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Other residencies attended include the California Institute of the Arts\, the University of Michigan\, Vermont Studio Center\, and forthcoming Stove Works (TN) in 2025. Solo and group exhibitions include Central Michigan University (MI)\, Playground Detroit (MI)\, Riffe Gallery (OH)\, and ROY G BIV Gallery (OH). She has public and corporate commissions at the Cranbrook Art Museum\, PayTile\, and Cross River Bank. Her work is held in public collections at Central Michigan University\, Summa Health\, and MetroHealth\, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States.Sara Nickleson is an artist\, curator\, and gallery director based in Detroit\, Michigan. She held the position of Senior Director at Library Street Collective gallery from 2016 to 2022. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Exhibitions of her artwork include a solo show at Louis Buhl &amp\; Co. (Detroit) as well as a number of group presentations. Nickleson received her BFA from the University of Windsor (Windsor\, Canada)\; a BID from the College for Creative Studies (Detroit\, MI)\; and an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan.\nFrom June 26 through August 2\, 2025\, Fagan\, Mongoven\, and Nickleson will present their work in a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery\, with logistical and curatorial support from the Gallery's professional staff.\n2025 Envision Awardee Named\nAt the exhibition's opening reception on June 26\, the jury reconvened to select the Envision 2025 Award recipient\, awarding Sara Nickleson a $5\,000 prize.\nIn a statement about Nickleson's work\, the jury noted: “Sara Nickleson’s ambitious paintings boldly invite us to explore our relationship with the unknown. At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. Layering colors and mark-making that draw on prehistoric forms and symbols\, Nickleson seeks a new futurity that acknowledges the losses\, and co-existence that build on our differences and commonalities. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Little Looney: Lessons Learned as a Loon Biologist
DESCRIPTION:The Common Loon is an icon of the northern wilderness as well as an indicator of the health and integrity of aquatic ecosystems. Giving the Hann Lecture  in Ornithology during the 2025 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, Dr. Jay Mager will provide an overview of the life history of the Common Loon\, share insight into the past work considering behavioral mechanisms by which loons select and defend breeding territories\, and discuss current conservation practices by scientists and citizens to preserve and protect loon populations\, including more recent work considering the behavior of loons during the non-breeding season.\n\nMager is a professor of biological sciences at Ohio Northern University\, where he teaches courses in biology\, ecology\, animal behavior\, and ornithology. He received his Bachelor of Science in biology at Hiram College\, his master’s degree in zoology at Miami University\, and his Ph.D. in neurobiology and behavior at Cornell University. Trained as a behavioral ecologist\, Mager is fortunate to have spent most of his career studying various aspects of the life history of the Common Loon and applying what he has learned to a number of conservation and management issues facing this species.\n\nThe U-M Biological Station — the largest of U-M's campuses at more than 10\,000 forested acres surrounded by lakes — is one of the nation's largest and longest continuously operating field research stations.\n\nFounded in 1909\, the Biological Station supports long-term research and education. It is where students and scientists from across the globe live and work as a community to learn from the place.\n\nThe Summer Lecture Series is a tradition at UMBS\, where we explore scientific topics with distinguished guest speakers from across the country so our community can learn about our natural world.\n\nThe free\, public talks are on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. in the spring and summer in Gates Lecture Hall at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, located at 9133 Biological Rd. in Pellston\, Michigan — about 20 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.

DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit. DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative showcases the depth of artistic excellence and merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan and recognizes the creativity\, rigor and innovation of artists and collaboratives working in the region\, inspiring the next generations of artists in our state.\nIn the of fall of 2024\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. \nA shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Juana Williams\, art curator and writer based in Detroit\, Michigan\; Melinda Zacher Ronayne\, former director of visual arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts\; and Parisa Ghaderi\, assistant professor of graphic design at Shoreline Community College and winner of the 2023 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award. \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2025:\nConor Fagan obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. He has had solo shows with My Pet Ram and Gitler &amp\; in NYC\, and most recently has been featured and won an award at The 2025 Regional Show at the Dennos Museum and Cultural Center. He has works in numerous public collections including the Waterton - Global corporate collection\, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in Baei St Paul. His work has been collected privately both nationally and internationally. Currently\, he teaches and lives outside of Traverse City at Interlochen Arts Academy\, nestled among the trees\, rivers\, and lakes of northern Michigan.Katie Mongoven/上秋莲 is a Chinese American fiber artist from Washington\, DC\, based in Detroit\, MI. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &amp\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Other residencies attended include the California Institute of the Arts\, the University of Michigan\, Vermont Studio Center\, and forthcoming Stove Works (TN) in 2025. Solo and group exhibitions include Central Michigan University (MI)\, Playground Detroit (MI)\, Riffe Gallery (OH)\, and ROY G BIV Gallery (OH). She has public and corporate commissions at the Cranbrook Art Museum\, PayTile\, and Cross River Bank. Her work is held in public collections at Central Michigan University\, Summa Health\, and MetroHealth\, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States.Sara Nickleson is an artist\, curator\, and gallery director based in Detroit\, Michigan. She held the position of Senior Director at Library Street Collective gallery from 2016 to 2022. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Exhibitions of her artwork include a solo show at Louis Buhl &amp\; Co. (Detroit) as well as a number of group presentations. Nickleson received her BFA from the University of Windsor (Windsor\, Canada)\; a BID from the College for Creative Studies (Detroit\, MI)\; and an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan.\nFrom June 26 through August 2\, 2025\, Fagan\, Mongoven\, and Nickleson will present their work in a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery\, with logistical and curatorial support from the Gallery's professional staff.\n2025 Envision Awardee Named\nAt the exhibition's opening reception on June 26\, the jury reconvened to select the Envision 2025 Award recipient\, awarding Sara Nickleson a $5\,000 prize.\nIn a statement about Nickleson's work\, the jury noted: “Sara Nickleson’s ambitious paintings boldly invite us to explore our relationship with the unknown. At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

The Brooklyn-based outfit sprang from a chance encounter while busking in NYC's bustling subways and burst onto the national stage in 2019 when their song\, \"Love in the Underground\,\" was featured on the NPR Tiny Desk Contest's Top Shelf\, with the esteemed tastemakers at the station proclaiming\, \"the band orchestrates a symphony of sound and story through its impressive musicianship and marvelous harmonies.\" \n\nAfter recording their 2021 EP\, Now Is The Time\, with producer Ryan Hadlock (Brandi Carlile\, The Lumineers)\, the Bandits took to the screen\, devising a short musical film\, Band At The End Of The World\, commissioned by Prospect Musicals. Since then\, they have continued to explore the nexus of indie-folk music and theatrical storytelling\, composing music for the Netflix animated series\, Storybots\, scoring the movie\, The Same Storm\, adapting several songs from texts by William Shakespeare for a production of As You Like It\, and receiving an NEA grant for a new musical with Prospect Musicals\, all the while touring the globe with appearances at the Cambridge Folk Festival\, Floydfest\, Summerfest Milwaukee\, Americanafest\, F1 Singapore Grand Prix\, Mile of Music\, and the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival.\n\nBandits on the Run are currently working on the stage musical adaptation of the novel What's Eating Gilbert Grape in association with MCC Theater\, alongside actor-musician Christopher Sears and Academy Award Nominee Peter Hedges\, who wrote the original book and screenplay.

DESCRIPTION:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative showcases the depth of artistic excellence and merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan and recognizes the creativity\, rigor and innovation of artists and collaboratives working in the region\, inspiring the next generations of artists in our state.\nIn the of fall of 2024\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. \nA shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Juana Williams\, art curator and writer based in Detroit\, Michigan\; Melinda Zacher Ronayne\, former director of visual arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts\; and Parisa Ghaderi\, assistant professor of graphic design at Shoreline Community College and winner of the 2023 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award. \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2025:\nConor Fagan obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. He has had solo shows with My Pet Ram and Gitler &amp\; in NYC\, and most recently has been featured and won an award at The 2025 Regional Show at the Dennos Museum and Cultural Center. He has works in numerous public collections including the Waterton - Global corporate collection\, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in Baei St Paul. His work has been collected privately both nationally and internationally. Currently\, he teaches and lives outside of Traverse City at Interlochen Arts Academy\, nestled among the trees\, rivers\, and lakes of northern Michigan.Katie Mongoven/上秋莲 is a Chinese American fiber artist from Washington\, DC\, based in Detroit\, MI. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &amp\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Other residencies attended include the California Institute of the Arts\, the University of Michigan\, Vermont Studio Center\, and forthcoming Stove Works (TN) in 2025. Solo and group exhibitions include Central Michigan University (MI)\, Playground Detroit (MI)\, Riffe Gallery (OH)\, and ROY G BIV Gallery (OH). She has public and corporate commissions at the Cranbrook Art Museum\, PayTile\, and Cross River Bank. Her work is held in public collections at Central Michigan University\, Summa Health\, and MetroHealth\, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States.Sara Nickleson is an artist\, curator\, and gallery director based in Detroit\, Michigan. She held the position of Senior Director at Library Street Collective gallery from 2016 to 2022. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Exhibitions of her artwork include a solo show at Louis Buhl &amp\; Co. (Detroit) as well as a number of group presentations. Nickleson received her BFA from the University of Windsor (Windsor\, Canada)\; a BID from the College for Creative Studies (Detroit\, MI)\; and an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan.\nFrom June 26 through August 2\, 2025\, Fagan\, Mongoven\, and Nickleson will present their work in a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery\, with logistical and curatorial support from the Gallery's professional staff.\n2025 Envision Awardee Named\nAt the exhibition's opening reception on June 26\, the jury reconvened to select the Envision 2025 Award recipient\, awarding Sara Nickleson a $5\,000 prize.\nIn a statement about Nickleson's work\, the jury noted: “Sara Nickleson’s ambitious paintings boldly invite us to explore our relationship with the unknown. At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative showcases the depth of artistic excellence and merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan and recognizes the creativity\, rigor and innovation of artists and collaboratives working in the region\, inspiring the next generations of artists in our state.\nIn the of fall of 2024\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. \nA shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Juana Williams\, art curator and writer based in Detroit\, Michigan\; Melinda Zacher Ronayne\, former director of visual arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts\; and Parisa Ghaderi\, assistant professor of graphic design at Shoreline Community College and winner of the 2023 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award. \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2025:\nConor Fagan obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. He has had solo shows with My Pet Ram and Gitler &amp\; in NYC\, and most recently has been featured and won an award at The 2025 Regional Show at the Dennos Museum and Cultural Center. He has works in numerous public collections including the Waterton - Global corporate collection\, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in Baei St Paul. His work has been collected privately both nationally and internationally. Currently\, he teaches and lives outside of Traverse City at Interlochen Arts Academy\, nestled among the trees\, rivers\, and lakes of northern Michigan.Katie Mongoven/上秋莲 is a Chinese American fiber artist from Washington\, DC\, based in Detroit\, MI. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &amp\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Other residencies attended include the California Institute of the Arts\, the University of Michigan\, Vermont Studio Center\, and forthcoming Stove Works (TN) in 2025. Solo and group exhibitions include Central Michigan University (MI)\, Playground Detroit (MI)\, Riffe Gallery (OH)\, and ROY G BIV Gallery (OH). She has public and corporate commissions at the Cranbrook Art Museum\, PayTile\, and Cross River Bank. Her work is held in public collections at Central Michigan University\, Summa Health\, and MetroHealth\, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States.Sara Nickleson is an artist\, curator\, and gallery director based in Detroit\, Michigan. She held the position of Senior Director at Library Street Collective gallery from 2016 to 2022. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Exhibitions of her artwork include a solo show at Louis Buhl &amp\; Co. (Detroit) as well as a number of group presentations. Nickleson received her BFA from the University of Windsor (Windsor\, Canada)\; a BID from the College for Creative Studies (Detroit\, MI)\; and an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan.\nFrom June 26 through August 2\, 2025\, Fagan\, Mongoven\, and Nickleson will present their work in a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery\, with logistical and curatorial support from the Gallery's professional staff.\n2025 Envision Awardee Named\nAt the exhibition's opening reception on June 26\, the jury reconvened to select the Envision 2025 Award recipient\, awarding Sara Nickleson a $5\,000 prize.\nIn a statement about Nickleson's work\, the jury noted: “Sara Nickleson’s ambitious paintings boldly invite us to explore our relationship with the unknown. At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. Layering colors and mark-making that draw on prehistoric forms and symbols\, Nickleson seeks a new futurity that acknowledges the losses\, and co-existence that build on our differences and commonalities. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:“As impressive as it is felt\, Nail’s robust\, resonant tenor just might be country’s most limber and soulful this side of Ronnie Dunn.” –The Washington Post\n\nHailing from Kennett\, Missouri\, David Nail is well-respected up and down Music Row. Some might even call him a “tour de force” as his songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled through much of his life. The GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum singer/songwriter’s early releases\, I’m About To Come Alive\, The Sound Of A Million Dreams\, I’m A Fire and Fighter\, ignited his reputation as an innovator and creative risk-taker yet left Nail feeling restless. This led to the departure of the only record company home he’d ever known\, MCA Nashville\, where he’d formed friendships that endure even now. \n\nThrough dealing with his own journey of mental health and the feeling of needing to “rebel against what people expect you to be\,” Nail began making his most organic work to date\, David Nail & The Well Ravens\, with Jason Hall and Andrew Petroff. That project liberated Nail and propelled him into his next adventure. Writing solo for the next few months led to his debut solo independent EP Oh\, Mother\, a reflective piece of work. Of the title track\, Rolling Stone noted that “the song creeps in like a sunrise — quiet\, restrained cello and keys are the only underpinning for Nail’s powerful vocals at first. But then it slowly builds to something more massive and majestic.” That release was followed by Bootheel 2020 and Bootheel 2021\, projects dedicated to the singer/songwriter’s hometown in the “bootheel” of Missouri. Nail released an EP titled Best of Me in 2023 and the title track has seen heavy press support and country radio airplay. \n\n2024 brought more touring than ever\, two great single releases “If I Could Call” and “Why” featuring Aubrie Sellers. Nail plans on releasing the start of an excitingly different and elevated album project this year leaving behind any self-imposed restrictions. In Nail’s own words\, “My philosophy has always been\, I just hope to have a good enough year that I can have a next year while staying as true to myself as I possibly can.”
