SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Carlo Vitale Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative showcases the depth of artistic excellence and merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan and recognizes the creativity\, rigor and innovation of artists and collaboratives working in the region\, inspiring the next generations of artists in our state.\nIn the of fall of 2024\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. \nA shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Juana Williams\, art curator and writer based in Detroit\, Michigan\; Melinda Zacher Ronayne\, former director of visual arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts\; and Parisa Ghaderi\, assistant professor of graphic design at Shoreline Community College and winner of the 2023 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award. \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2025:\nConor Fagan obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. He has had solo shows with My Pet Ram and Gitler &amp\; in NYC\, and most recently has been featured and won an award at The 2025 Regional Show at the Dennos Museum and Cultural Center. He has works in numerous public collections including the Waterton - Global corporate collection\, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in Baei St Paul. His work has been collected privately both nationally and internationally. Currently\, he teaches and lives outside of Traverse City at Interlochen Arts Academy\, nestled among the trees\, rivers\, and lakes of northern Michigan.Katie Mongoven/上秋莲 is a Chinese American fiber artist from Washington\, DC\, based in Detroit\, MI. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &amp\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Other residencies attended include the California Institute of the Arts\, the University of Michigan\, Vermont Studio Center\, and forthcoming Stove Works (TN) in 2025. Solo and group exhibitions include Central Michigan University (MI)\, Playground Detroit (MI)\, Riffe Gallery (OH)\, and ROY G BIV Gallery (OH). She has public and corporate commissions at the Cranbrook Art Museum\, PayTile\, and Cross River Bank. Her work is held in public collections at Central Michigan University\, Summa Health\, and MetroHealth\, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States.Sara Nickleson is an artist\, curator\, and gallery director based in Detroit\, Michigan. She held the position of Senior Director at Library Street Collective gallery from 2016 to 2022. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Exhibitions of her artwork include a solo show at Louis Buhl &amp\; Co. (Detroit) as well as a number of group presentations. Nickleson received her BFA from the University of Windsor (Windsor\, Canada)\; a BID from the College for Creative Studies (Detroit\, MI)\; and an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan.\nFrom June 26 through August 2\, 2025\, Fagan\, Mongoven\, and Nickleson will present their work in a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery\, with logistical and curatorial support from the Gallery's professional staff.\n2025 Envision Awardee Named\nAt the exhibition's opening reception on June 26\, the jury reconvened to select the Envision 2025 Award recipient\, awarding Sara Nickleson a $5\,000 prize.\nIn a statement about Nickleson's work\, the jury noted: “Sara Nickleson’s ambitious paintings boldly invite us to explore our relationship with the unknown. At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. Layering colors and mark-making that draw on prehistoric forms and symbols\, Nickleson seeks a new futurity that acknowledges the losses\, and co-existence that build on our differences and commonalities. DESCRIPTION:The William L. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

They are currently collaborating with a museum design firm on the final version of the exhibit\, which will debut in fall 2025. The Brooklyn-based outfit sprang from a chance encounter while busking in NYC's bustling subways and burst onto the national stage in 2019 when their song\, \"Love in the Underground\,\" was featured on the NPR Tiny Desk Contest's Top Shelf\, with the esteemed tastemakers at the station proclaiming\, \"the band orchestrates a symphony of sound and story through its impressive musicianship and marvelous harmonies.\" \n\nAfter recording their 2021 EP\, Now Is The Time\, with producer Ryan Hadlock (Brandi Carlile\, The Lumineers)\, the Bandits took to the screen\, devising a short musical film\, Band At The End Of The World\, commissioned by Prospect Musicals. DESCRIPTION:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative showcases the depth of artistic excellence and merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan and recognizes the creativity\, rigor and innovation of artists and collaboratives working in the region\, inspiring the next generations of artists in our state.\nIn the of fall of 2024\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. \nA shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Juana Williams\, art curator and writer based in Detroit\, Michigan\; Melinda Zacher Ronayne\, former director of visual arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts\; and Parisa Ghaderi\, assistant professor of graphic design at Shoreline Community College and winner of the 2023 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award. \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2025:\nConor Fagan obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. He has had solo shows with My Pet Ram and Gitler &amp\; in NYC\, and most recently has been featured and won an award at The 2025 Regional Show at the Dennos Museum and Cultural Center. He has works in numerous public collections including the Waterton - Global corporate collection\, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in Baei St Paul. His work has been collected privately both nationally and internationally. Currently\, he teaches and lives outside of Traverse City at Interlochen Arts Academy\, nestled among the trees\, rivers\, and lakes of northern Michigan.Katie Mongoven/上秋莲 is a Chinese American fiber artist from Washington\, DC\, based in Detroit\, MI. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &amp\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Other residencies attended include the California Institute of the Arts\, the University of Michigan\, Vermont Studio Center\, and forthcoming Stove Works (TN) in 2025. Solo and group exhibitions include Central Michigan University (MI)\, Playground Detroit (MI)\, Riffe Gallery (OH)\, and ROY G BIV Gallery (OH). She has public and corporate commissions at the Cranbrook Art Museum\, PayTile\, and Cross River Bank. Her work is held in public collections at Central Michigan University\, Summa Health\, and MetroHealth\, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States.Sara Nickleson is an artist\, curator\, and gallery director based in Detroit\, Michigan. She held the position of Senior Director at Library Street Collective gallery from 2016 to 2022. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Exhibitions of her artwork include a solo show at Louis Buhl &amp\; Co. (Detroit) as well as a number of group presentations. Nickleson received her BFA from the University of Windsor (Windsor\, Canada)\; a BID from the College for Creative Studies (Detroit\, MI)\; and an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan.\nFrom June 26 through August 2\, 2025\, Fagan\, Mongoven\, and Nickleson will present their work in a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery\, with logistical and curatorial support from the Gallery's professional staff.\n2025 Envision Awardee Named\nAt the exhibition's opening reception on June 26\, the jury reconvened to select the Envision 2025 Award recipient\, awarding Sara Nickleson a $5\,000 prize.\nIn a statement about Nickleson's work\, the jury noted: “Sara Nickleson’s ambitious paintings boldly invite us to explore our relationship with the unknown. At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative showcases the depth of artistic excellence and merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan and recognizes the creativity\, rigor and innovation of artists and collaboratives working in the region\, inspiring the next generations of artists in our state.\nIn the of fall of 2024\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. \nA shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Juana Williams\, art curator and writer based in Detroit\, Michigan\; Melinda Zacher Ronayne\, former director of visual arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts\; and Parisa Ghaderi\, assistant professor of graphic design at Shoreline Community College and winner of the 2023 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award. \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2025:\nConor Fagan obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. He has had solo shows with My Pet Ram and Gitler &amp\; in NYC\, and most recently has been featured and won an award at The 2025 Regional Show at the Dennos Museum and Cultural Center. He has works in numerous public collections including the Waterton - Global corporate collection\, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in Baei St Paul. His work has been collected privately both nationally and internationally. Currently\, he teaches and lives outside of Traverse City at Interlochen Arts Academy\, nestled among the trees\, rivers\, and lakes of northern Michigan.Katie Mongoven/上秋莲 is a Chinese American fiber artist from Washington\, DC\, based in Detroit\, MI. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &amp\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Other residencies attended include the California Institute of the Arts\, the University of Michigan\, Vermont Studio Center\, and forthcoming Stove Works (TN) in 2025. Solo and group exhibitions include Central Michigan University (MI)\, Playground Detroit (MI)\, Riffe Gallery (OH)\, and ROY G BIV Gallery (OH). She has public and corporate commissions at the Cranbrook Art Museum\, PayTile\, and Cross River Bank. Her work is held in public collections at Central Michigan University\, Summa Health\, and MetroHealth\, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States.Sara Nickleson is an artist\, curator\, and gallery director based in Detroit\, Michigan. She held the position of Senior Director at Library Street Collective gallery from 2016 to 2022. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Exhibitions of her artwork include a solo show at Louis Buhl &amp\; Co. (Detroit) as well as a number of group presentations. Nickleson received her BFA from the University of Windsor (Windsor\, Canada)\; a BID from the College for Creative Studies (Detroit\, MI)\; and an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan.\nFrom June 26 through August 2\, 2025\, Fagan\, Mongoven\, and Nickleson will present their work in a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery\, with logistical and curatorial support from the Gallery's professional staff.\n2025 Envision Awardee Named\nAt the exhibition's opening reception on June 26\, the jury reconvened to select the Envision 2025 Award recipient\, awarding Sara Nickleson a $5\,000 prize.\nIn a statement about Nickleson's work\, the jury noted: “Sara Nickleson’s ambitious paintings boldly invite us to explore our relationship with the unknown. At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. Layering colors and mark-making that draw on prehistoric forms and symbols\, Nickleson seeks a new futurity that acknowledges the losses\, and co-existence that build on our differences and commonalities. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. This is a great way to discover the ancient world and connect our daily lives to the lives of families in the past.\n\nIn *Cleo and Cornelius*\, adventurous Cleo and couch potato Cornelius live in ancient Egypt\, where cats are worshiped like gods and goddesses. After Cornelius accidentally boards a boat departing on a voyage across the sea\, the two felines find themselves in the faraway city of Rome\, a place where dogs are treated like kings. In Rome\, the activities never end! Cleo and Cornelius race chariots\, play games\, perform in a theater\, and more. Do they even want to return to Egypt? A spin on Aesop’s classic fable “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse\,” *Cleo and Cornelius* teems with hungry hippos\, toga-clad dogs\, and dancing cat mummies\, bringing new excitement to a timeless tale.\n\nThis event is free and open to all visitors. DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Annie Gao is a carillonist and software engineer from the sunny suburbs of Southern California. She first met the carillon in 2017 as a member of the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs\, completed her Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA) Carillonneur exam in 2020\, and graduated from Yale in 2021 with a combined B.S./M.S. in Computer Science. She then had the tremendous privilege of continuing her carillon studies internationally with Geert D’hollander\, Boudewijn Zwart\, and Eddy Mariën\, and along the way\, was selected for the quinquennial Kors Monster Festival Performance Nomination (2024)\, as well as *The Diapason*'s \"20 Under 30\" list (2025). She has taught carillon performance masterclasses all over the United States\, and currently serves the GCNA as chair of the Emerging Artists Grant committee and jury member of the Carillonneur Exam. In her free time\, Annie enjoys competitive ping pong\, puzzles and brainteasers\, good reads\, and opportunities to explore and improve her fascinatingly bad sense of direction.\n\nSummer carillon concerts are free and open to all\, including to families and their pets. The music happens rain or shine. Please note that concerts are scheduled on both Central and North Campus\, so plan your commute accordingly. When you arrive\, take a program from the stand near the tower and have a seat outdoors wherever you like\, or bring your own lawn chair or blanket (even your own picnic!). Concert staff wearing nametags will be available to answer questions or direct you to accessible restrooms and other facilities. For best acoustics\, sit far enough away from the tower to have a direct line of sight to the bells.\n\nMetered visitor parking near Lurie Tower is available behind the Walgreen Drama Center. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. SUMMARY:Presentation:Exponential Last Passage Percolation in the Upper Large Deviation Regime and Multi-Point Distributions for other LPP Models
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nThis thesis focuses on the study of directed last passage percolation (LPP) models in random media\, which are two-dimensional stochastic growth models. These models have numerous applications and exhibit deep connections with random matrix theory and integrable probability. After appropriate scaling\, it has been shown that LPP models converge to a universal limit known as the KPZ fixed point. A key quantity in these models is the last passage time\, which represents the maximum total weight collected along an up-right path between two points. The thesis is divided into two parts.\n\nThe first part of this thesis studies exponential LPP under the condition that the last passage time at one point is unusually large. We then analyze the effect of this conditioning on the last passage time at other points. We find that this conditioning influences the last passage times in certain regions. After applying a suitable scaling\, which differs from the 1 : 2 : 3 KPZ scaling\, we also derive results for the conditional fluctuations.\n\nThe second part of the thesis is devoted to computing the multi-point distributions for Poissonian and Brownian LPP with step initial condition. Using these explicit formulas\, we provide an alternative proof that the multi-point distributions of Poissonian and Brownian LPP converge to those of the KPZ fixed point under the 1 : 2 : 3 scaling.

DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. DESCRIPTION:Carlo Vitale is a distinguished Michigan-based artist whose vibrant contributions to the Detroit art scene have flourished since the 1970s. A native of Detroit\, Vitale's work is celebrated as part of the second generation of the Cass Corridor Art Movement\, Detroit’s first avante garde. His art draws inspiration from the sweeping vistas of farmland seen from above\, the intricate patterns of quilt-making\, the dynamic energy of cityscapes\, and the rich tapestry of daily life. Vitale eloquently characterizes his mesmerizing oil paintings and prints as “kinetic\, metaphysical abstractions\,” inviting viewers to engage with the depth and vitality of his creative vision.\n\nVitale received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Masters of Fine Arts from Wayne State University in Detroit.  His work can be found in many collections including The Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York\, The Detroit Institute of Art\, Cranbrook Art Museum\, Wayne State University Collection\, University of Michigan Museum of Art and corporate\, hospital\, and private collections throughout the country.

DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. DESCRIPTION:Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative showcases the depth of artistic excellence and merit of contemporary art practices in Michigan and recognizes the creativity\, rigor and innovation of artists and collaboratives working in the region\, inspiring the next generations of artists in our state.\nIn the of fall of 2024\, Stamps Gallery announced an open call for artwork\, inviting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists from Michigan working in all types of media to apply. \nA shortlist of three artists were selected by a prominent national panel of jurors: Juana Williams\, art curator and writer based in Detroit\, Michigan\; Melinda Zacher Ronayne\, former director of visual arts at the Interlochen Center for the Arts\; and Parisa Ghaderi\, assistant professor of graphic design at Shoreline Community College and winner of the 2023 Envision: Michigan Artist Initiative Award. \nMeet the shortlisted finalist artists for Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative 2025:\nConor Fagan obtained his Master of Fine Arts degree at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in the spring of 2014. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. He has had solo shows with My Pet Ram and Gitler &amp\; in NYC\, and most recently has been featured and won an award at The 2025 Regional Show at the Dennos Museum and Cultural Center. He has works in numerous public collections including the Waterton - Global corporate collection\, the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Museum of Modern Art in Baei St Paul. His work has been collected privately both nationally and internationally. Currently\, he teaches and lives outside of Traverse City at Interlochen Arts Academy\, nestled among the trees\, rivers\, and lakes of northern Michigan.Katie Mongoven/上秋莲 is a Chinese American fiber artist from Washington\, DC\, based in Detroit\, MI. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &amp\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Other residencies attended include the California Institute of the Arts\, the University of Michigan\, Vermont Studio Center\, and forthcoming Stove Works (TN) in 2025. Solo and group exhibitions include Central Michigan University (MI)\, Playground Detroit (MI)\, Riffe Gallery (OH)\, and ROY G BIV Gallery (OH). She has public and corporate commissions at the Cranbrook Art Museum\, PayTile\, and Cross River Bank. Her work is held in public collections at Central Michigan University\, Summa Health\, and MetroHealth\, and in numerous private collections throughout the United States.Sara Nickleson is an artist\, curator\, and gallery director based in Detroit\, Michigan. She held the position of Senior Director at Library Street Collective gallery from 2016 to 2022. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Exhibitions of her artwork include a solo show at Louis Buhl &amp\; Co. (Detroit) as well as a number of group presentations. Nickleson received her BFA from the University of Windsor (Windsor\, Canada)\; a BID from the College for Creative Studies (Detroit\, MI)\; and an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan.\nFrom June 26 through August 2\, 2025\, Fagan\, Mongoven\, and Nickleson will present their work in a group exhibition at Stamps Gallery\, with logistical and curatorial support from the Gallery's professional staff.\n2025 Envision Awardee Named\nAt the exhibition's opening reception on June 26\, the jury reconvened to select the Envision 2025 Award recipient\, awarding Sara Nickleson a $5\,000 prize.\nIn a statement about Nickleson's work\, the jury noted: “Sara Nickleson’s ambitious paintings boldly invite us to explore our relationship with the unknown. At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. Layering colors and mark-making that draw on prehistoric forms and symbols\, Nickleson seeks a new futurity that acknowledges the losses\, and co-existence that build on our differences and commonalities. DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Clements Library is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the military hostilities that began the American Revolutionary War. The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental\, political\, economic\, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this exhibit\, visitors will have the opportunity to see original historical manuscript letters\, documents\, newspapers\, and artwork that reveal aspects of the bloody work of Empire and individual alike in April 1775.\n\nAmong the items on display will be Commander in Chief of the British Army\, General Thomas Gage's draft orders for the Concord Expedition\, April 18\, 1775\; a bundle of letters collected by former Sons of Liberty supporter Dr. Benjamin Church\, which he secretly turned over to British Army intelligence\; letters by Silas Deane\, John Hancock\, and Rachel Revere\; and much more.\n\nOpen weekdays from 12-4 pm.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Mutualism: What Do We Know\, and Where Do We Go From Here?
DESCRIPTION:Mutualism is cooperation among different species. Giving the Pettingil Lecture in Natural History during the 2025 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, Dr. Judith L. Bronstein will review the history of the study of mutualism\, a field that has only coalesced in the past 20 years. She will identify six major research directions and present her own recent work on one pollination mutualism to show how these directions can be integrated to move our understanding forward. This is a particularly intriguing interaction because it appears to be exceedingly costly (the offspring of the pollinator moths are voracious herbivores on the same plants)\, making it an ideal test case for testing our understanding of how mutualisms arise and when they can persist. Bronstein also will discuss a few pressing issues surrounding mutualism that are likely to drive the field in the coming years.\n\nJudith L. Bronstein is University Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona\, with a joint appointment in the Department of Entomology.\n\nShe also is an alumna of the U-M Biological Station. She studied at UMBS in 1978.\n\nBronstein received her A.B. from Brown University and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. She joined the University of Arizona faculty in 1989. Dr. Bronstein focuses on the ecology and evolution of interspecific interactions\, particularly on mutually beneficial ones (mutualisms). Her career-long goal has been to build a solid conceptual foundation for the study of these poorly understood interactions. Her current projects focus on their intersection with other interspecific relationships\, as well as with\nintraspecific cooperation.\n\nBronstein has won numerous teaching awards and has served in leadership positions locally\, nationally\, and worldwide. She is associate editor of Annual Review of\nEcology\, Evolution\, and Systematics and natural history associate editor of The American Naturalist\; she has served as editor-in-chief of The American Naturalist and as president of the American Society of Naturalists. Bronstein is a Fellow of the Ecological Society of America and recipient of the American Society of Naturalist’s Distinguished Achievement in the Conceptual Unification of the Biological Sciences Award. In 2024\, she was elected Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.\n\nThe U-M Biological Station — the largest of U-M's campuses at more than 10\,000 forested acres surrounded by lakes — is one of the nation's largest and longest continuously operating field research stations.\n\nFounded in 1909\, the Biological Station supports long-term research and education. It is where students and scientists from across the globe live and work as a community to learn from the place.\n\nThe Summer Lecture Series is a tradition at UMBS\, where we explore scientific topics with distinguished guest speakers from across the country so our community can learn about our natural world.\n\nThe free\, public talks are on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. in the spring and summer in Gates Lecture Hall at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, located at 9133 Biological Rd. in Pellston\, Michigan — about 20 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.
