Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. Among his many numerous awards and grants\, he has been one of twelve international artists selected to participate in The 31st annual International Symposium of Contemporary Art in Baie – Saint Paul\, Quebec\; a year-long artist in Residence at the Roswell artist-in-Residency in Roswell\, New Mexico\; and a featured artist at the 2020 Spring Break Art Show\, in New York\, New York. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. Mutations are a particular kind of quiver transformation. A central open question in cluster combinatorics is that of detecting whether two given quivers are mutation equivalent. We approach this problem from two directions. First\, we construct new arbitrarily long mutation cycles\, i.e.\, sequences of mutations transforming a quiver into itself. These cycles give a barrier to greedy algorithms for deciding mutation equivalence. We show that a plethora of such cycles can be constructed using quivers that possess reddening sequences. Second\, we introduce new mutation invariants that yield necessary conditions for mutation equivalence. In many cases\, these invariants provide a quick way to establish that two quivers are mutation inequivalent\, or that a given quiver cannot be mutated into an acylic one.\n\nThis event will be hybrid format. To address this limitation\, we propose SALSA-RL (Stability Analysis in the Latent Space of Actions)\, a novel RL framework that models control actions as dynamic\, time-dependent variables evolving within a latent space. By employing a pre-trained encoder-decoder and a state-dependent linear system\, our approach enables interpretability through local stability analysis\, where instantaneous growth in action-norms can be predicted before their execution. We demonstrate that SALSA-RL can be deployed in a non-invasive manner for assessing the local stability of actions from pretrained RL agents without compromising on performance across diverse benchmark environments. By enabling a more interpretable analysis of action generation\, SALSA-RL provides a powerful tool for advancing the design\, analysis\, and theoretical understanding of RL systems.\n\nBio: Romit Maulik is an Assistant Professor in the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). He is also a co-hire in the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences at Penn State and a Joint Appointment Faculty at Argonne National Laboratory. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. This dissertation presents a computational framework that leverages machine learning\, computer vision\, large‐language models\, and novel mathematical methods to extract\, analyze\, and interpret leaf traits at scale. By combining lineage‐specific approaches with broad comparative analyses\, it establishes procedures for measuring traits across these vast datasets.\nChapter 2 introduces LeafMachine2\, a modular machine‐learning pipeline that automates quantitative trait extraction from digitized herbarium specimens. Trained on nearly half a million manual annotations from over two thousand species\, LeafMachine2 employs multiple neural networks to detect and segment individual leaves\, recognize rulers and labels\, and identify pseudo‐landmarks such as midvein length\, petiole length\, and lobe positions. This tool processes thousands of images per hour\, calculates pixel‐to‐metric conversion factors for most common scalebar types\, and generates standardized measurements (area\, perimeter\, Fourier descriptors\, and landmark‐based metrics) even when specimens contain occluded or overlapping leaves. By automating leaf extraction and measurement procedures\, LeafMachine2 removes a bottleneck in morphological data acquisition and lays the foundation for large‐scale analyses.\nChapter 3 presents FieldPrism\, a versatile hardware and software suite designed to extend quantitative trait collection to field photographs. FieldPrism employs a photogrammetric background template (FieldSheet) containing machine‐readable scale markers and optional QR codes for specimen identification. Coupled with a Raspberry Pi-based mobile imaging apparatus (FieldStation)\, FieldPrism automatically corrects image distortion\, computes pixel‐to‐metric conversion\, decodes QR codes to assign meaningful file names\, and embeds GPS metadata. Validation tests across smartphone\, mirrorless\, and machine‐vision cameras demonstrate high accuracy in scale conversion and reliable QR code decoding at typical working distances. FieldPrism enables the creation of “snapshot vouchers” that complement physical voucher specimens\, opening new possibilities for citizen science and field‐based trait collection.\nChapter 4 explores the integration of large language models (LLMs) into herbarium label transcription. VoucherVision combines optical character recognition with LLM‐based parsing to transform unstructured OCR text into structured spreadsheet entries. In practice\, VoucherVision increased transcription productivity by 25 percent over manual workflows. This chapter also examines potential risks like job displacement\, copyright and data sovereignty issues\, model permanence\, and outlines a collaborative benchmarking initiative to develop fine‐tuned\, community‐driven LLM solutions that respect data ownership and ensure reproducibility.\nChapter 5 applies LeafMachine2\, Euler characteristic transform (ECT)\, and a novel geomorphon‐based classification to analyze 4.6 million individual leaf outlines from nearly half a million herbarium specimens\, covering 12 angiosperm families and close to seven thousand species. ECT matrices capture topological signatures of each leaf outline\, while geomorphon analysis distills leaf margin features into continuous and categorical metrics that quantify toothedness and lobedness. By integrating WorldClim bioclimatic layers with dated phylogenies and analyzing the dataset using linear mixed-effects and phylogenetic regression models\, I demonstrate that the canonical climate–leaf trait associations—larger\, entire-margined leaves in warmer\, wetter environments and more toothed or lobed leaves in cooler\, drier locations—are clade-specific rather than universal across angiosperms. Instead\, family‐ and genus‐specific evolutionary regimes emerge. Phylogenetic correction often weakens climate-leaf area associations while strengthening leaf shape associations with minimum temperatures. Correlated‐trait analyses reveal that margin‐type evolution is climate‐dependent in some woody clades but independent in many herbaceous groups. Overall\, leaf traits are shaped by a dynamic interaction of developmental constraints\, phylogenetic history\, growth habit\, and climate.\nThis dissertation demonstrates that integrating machine learning\, artificial intelligence\, and innovative mathematical approaches transform digitized herbarium specimens into a rigorous analytical foundation for addressing foundational questions in leaf evolution and biogeography. Providing scalable\, streamlined workflows that operate at previously unattainable scales\, these contributions enable researchers to move beyond isolated case studies and achieve a holistic synthesis of how environment\, development\, and phylogenetic history interact to generate the extraordinary diversity of angiosperm leaf forms. Prior to this\, he studied under Joey Brink at the University of Chicago where he was introduced to the instrument. He is a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA) and has premiered multiple new compositions at GCNA congresses. Joseph now occasionally plays the carillon at the Riverside Church\, as well as being a member of the Riverside Ringers handbell group. In microbial ecology\, advances in sequencing technology have allowed widespread profiling of community structure\, and putative functions. However\, whether such descriptive characterization has improved our ability to predict and model microbial response dynamics remains unclear. Structure-function relationships are particularly convoluted in microbial systems due to high levels of genetic diversity\, metabolic plasticity\, context dependency\, and widespread functional redundancy. To this end\, a wide body of research has shown that past events or historical community states can affect contemporary communities. However\, the ways in which legacy effects influence microbial diversity patterns and response dynamics\, particularly in the face of anthropogenic disturbance regimes\, remains poorly understood. Using both an observational and experimental approach\, my research aims to identify the signatures of legacy effects on microbial trait distributions\, and assess whether these effects constrain or augment community response trajectories. Focusing on both soil and freshwater ecosystems\, my research will investigate legacy effects from agricultural management practices and lake eutrophication\, two major drivers of global change. Additionally\, I will explore whether trait distributions and response patterns observed in the laboratory scale up to reflect those observed in a natural ecosystem\, affected by these stressors. Broadly\, my research will contribute to the overall understanding of the factors driving variation in microbial community structure\, and the role of past environmental states or selection regimes play in community functional stability. Compared to a single-study analysis\, the methods produce increased statistical efficiency by borrowing information across related studies. Methodologically\, we relate the studies by assuming that certain conditional causal effects are equal across studies\; then we estimate these effects and appropriately average them to target prespecified marginal estimands. \n\nWhereas the first essay develops methods for integrating data across MRTs that have already been implemented\, the second essay introduces the robust mixed-effects (RoME) algorithm for optimizing treatment policies during an MRT. RoME is a contextual bandit algorithm that makes use of mixed-effects modeling\, network cohesion penalties\, doubly robust estimators\, and double/debiased machine learning (DML) to address the specific challenges of mHealth: treatment effect heterogeneity\, cluster structure\, nonstationarity\, and nonlinear relationships. We establish a high-probability regret bound that depends solely on the dimension of the differential-reward model\, enabling strong regret bounds even when the baseline reward is highly complex.\n\nThe third essay steps back from the MRT setting and develops Bayesian Randomization Inference (BRI): a general framework for Bayesian estimation of treatment effects based principally on the physical act of randomization. BRI involves fixing the observed potential outcomes\, positing a probabilistic model for the causal effects\, and forming a likelihood based on the randomization distribution of a statistic. In many cases\, BRI does not require specification of marginal outcome distributions\, resulting in weaker assumptions compared to Bayesian superpopulation-based methods. We prove several theoretical properties for BRI\, including a Bernstein–von Mises theorem and large-sample properties of posterior expectations. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. Her work investigates and fortifies the space between cultural dichotomies through multiple fiber processes. She received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art\, with the Surface Design Association’s Outstanding Student Award. She was a Roman J. Witt Visiting Artist at the University of Michigan\, a Windgate University Fellow at Arrowmont School of Arts &\; Crafts\, and the 2024 Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Prior to moving to Detroit\, Nickleson was the Head Curator and Director of Collections at the Design Exchange (DX) in Toronto\, Canada\, where she curated a number of internationally acclaimed exhibitions\, including This is Not a Toy\, The Politics of Fashion\, and 3DXL. Nickleson has written for a number of arts publications\, including exhibition catalogs (José Parlá: Polarities\; This is Not a Toy\; Coping Mechanisms\, Sam Durant: Iconoclasm) and artist monographs (Sam Friedman\, Tyrrell Winston). She has been a visiting curator and critic\, and was invited by the British Council to take part in their Design Connections symposium as part of London Design Week in 2015. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. She has been on the faculty of the Maine College of Art and Harvard’s Project Zero Classroom Summer Institute\, and regularly keynotes a variety of Museum\, Art\, and Education Conferences. Foley has given two TEDX Talks including Teaching Art or Teaching to Think like an Artist. Foley received the 2018 Ohio Distinguished Educator for Art Education award. She was appointed to the Michigan Arts and Culture Council in 2023. \nKatie Grace McGowan (she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist\, cultural producer\, and committed advocate for creative workers. His research focuses on understanding how species and ecosystems respond to the rampant loss of biodiversity\, climate change\, and the spread of invasive species. He has 15+ years of active research focused on mutualisms loss\, the loss of native species and the gain of invasive species\, global warming and the impacts of habitat fragmentation on the diversity and structure of communities\, and ecosystem processes.\n\nRodriguez-Cabal uses observational\, experimental\, meta-analytical\, and theoretical approaches with the aim of understanding the indirect impacts of global change on biodiversity. Mariano has published 50 peer-reviewed articles on different questions and systems from slugs in British Columbia and ants in North Carolina to endemic marsupials and birds in Patagonia. He is a two-time winner of a Fulbright Scholarship.\n\nHis Ph.D. is from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee. Rodriguez-Cabal earned his master of science from the University of Florida’s Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation.
