SUMMARY:Exhibition:Behind the Curve: Rainbows and the Science and Culture of Color
DESCRIPTION:We have many significant books from the history of our understanding of rainbows and color theory\, from the writings of scholar Ḥasan Ibn al-Haytham to Isaac Newton’s 1704 Opticks. Rainbows appear across the spectrum of our collections\, and this exhibit includes a handwritten illuminated manuscript\, practical color manuals of the industrial age\, contemporary artists’ and children’s books\, and more from our vast holdings. \n\nRainbows have captivated people for all of recorded history. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism
DESCRIPTION:Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison)\, this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art\, 1650-1850.\n \nIn recent times\, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections\, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries\, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works\, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet\, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden\, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.  \n \nIn this online exhibition\, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery\, which will open in early 2021\, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history. \n \nBy challenging our own practice\, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display\, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles\, and fails to settle for\, simple narratives. \n \n“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed\, so ornate\, so planned\, they call attention to themselves\; arrest us with intentionality and purpose\, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.” \n \n— Toni Morrison\n\nLead support for Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the U-M Arts Initiative\, and the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund.\n

SUMMARY:Other:Exhibition Tour: Post No Bills with Curator Ashley Miller
DESCRIPTION:Join UMMA Curator Ashley Miller for a tour of “Post No Bills”. This exhibition highlights the works of Turkish diplomat Burhan Doğançay (1929–2013) and his fascination with the messy cacophony of urban bulletin boards—produced by chance and absorbing the chaos of everyday life. Urban walls struck him as beautiful abstract paintings composed by humans\, nature\, and time. He abandoned his consular post and dedicated the rest of his life to creating artworks inspired by public walls around the world. Over fifty years he traveled to more than one hundred cities\, documenting the ever-changing advertisements\, graffiti\, and discourses recorded on thousands of walls. They became the inspiration for his own mixed media works that often incorporate raw materials from the street.\n \nFree and open to the public\, pre-registration is required.\n

DESCRIPTION:Opener: Olivia Ellen Lloyd\n\n“A Tommy Prine show is really like just spending an evening sitting down with him and becoming immersed in his life: the highs and lows\, the ups and downs\, the joy and grief. He shares it all and it’s spellbinding.” –Americana UK\n\nTommy Prine's debut album This Far South was not only a long-awaited introduction but a testimony to Prine's 20s and the loss\, love\, and growth that has defined them. Co-produced by a close friend and kindred musical spirit\, Ruston Kelly\, and beloved Nashville engineer and producer\, Gena Johnson\, the album is rich and dynamic from cathartic jams to nostalgic storytelling.\n\nTommy learned to play guitar by watching his father\, mimicking the ways his fingers moved\, he inadvertently developed his own singular style. Prine sonically brings together a colorful patchwork of musical influences spanning Gillian Welch\, Outkast\, Bon Iver\, the Strokes and more. Lyrically\, Tommy explores existential questions and emotional experiences in his music.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Redefining the Crown
DESCRIPTION:In Winter 2025\, the Lane Hall exhibit space will feature a portraiture series titled Redefining the Crown showcasing the powerful stories of six Black breast cancer survivors.\n\nBased on a photo essay by U-M Faculty Versha Pleasant (MD/MPH) and Ava Purkiss (PhD) in Medicine at Michigan\, this exhibition examines the cultural and personal significance of hair within Black communities\, particularly through the lens of breast cancer treatment and recovery. The term \"crown\" is deeply symbolic in Black culture\, signifying beauty\, strength\, and identity. The featured photo essay by photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks.\n\nThrough their narratives and portraits\, the exhibit examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy\, inviting the audience to witness their stories with radical empathy. It explores the cultural pride and personal identity intricately tied to their hair\, and how these elements are redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThe exhibit will be on view from January 21\, 2025 to August 8\, 2025. This exhibition is presented with support from IRWG\, the Department of Women's and Gender Studies\, and Michigan Medicine. \n\nLocated on the first floor of Lane Hall (204 S. State Street)\, the Exhibit Space is free and open to the public\, M-F\, 9am-4pm.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Student Dissertation Defense - Computational Morphometrics of Half a Million Herbarium Specimens Reveals Lineage-Specific Evolutionary Dynamics in Climate-Leaf Trait Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nDigitized herbarium collections facilitate access to hundreds of millions of preserved plant specimens\, enabling quantitative analysis of leaf morphology across taxonomic and geographic scales. This dissertation presents a computational framework that leverages machine learning\, computer vision\, large‐language models\, and novel mathematical methods to extract\, analyze\, and interpret leaf traits at scale. By combining lineage‐specific approaches with broad comparative analyses\, it establishes procedures for measuring traits across these vast datasets.\nChapter 2 introduces LeafMachine2\, a modular machine‐learning pipeline that automates quantitative trait extraction from digitized herbarium specimens. Trained on nearly half a million manual annotations from over two thousand species\, LeafMachine2 employs multiple neural networks to detect and segment individual leaves\, recognize rulers and labels\, and identify pseudo‐landmarks such as midvein length\, petiole length\, and lobe positions. This tool processes thousands of images per hour\, calculates pixel‐to‐metric conversion factors for most common scalebar types\, and generates standardized measurements (area\, perimeter\, Fourier descriptors\, and landmark‐based metrics) even when specimens contain occluded or overlapping leaves. By automating leaf extraction and measurement procedures\, LeafMachine2 removes a bottleneck in morphological data acquisition and lays the foundation for large‐scale analyses.\nChapter 3 presents FieldPrism\, a versatile hardware and software suite designed to extend quantitative trait collection to field photographs. FieldPrism employs a photogrammetric background template (FieldSheet) containing machine‐readable scale markers and optional QR codes for specimen identification. Coupled with a Raspberry Pi-based mobile imaging apparatus (FieldStation)\, FieldPrism automatically corrects image distortion\, computes pixel‐to‐metric conversion\, decodes QR codes to assign meaningful file names\, and embeds GPS metadata. Validation tests across smartphone\, mirrorless\, and machine‐vision cameras demonstrate high accuracy in scale conversion and reliable QR code decoding at typical working distances. FieldPrism enables the creation of “snapshot vouchers” that complement physical voucher specimens\, opening new possibilities for citizen science and field‐based trait collection.\nChapter 4 explores the integration of large language models (LLMs) into herbarium label transcription. VoucherVision combines optical character recognition with LLM‐based parsing to transform unstructured OCR text into structured spreadsheet entries. In practice\, VoucherVision increased transcription productivity by 25 percent over manual workflows. This chapter also examines potential risks like job displacement\, copyright and data sovereignty issues\, model permanence\, and outlines a collaborative benchmarking initiative to develop fine‐tuned\, community‐driven LLM solutions that respect data ownership and ensure reproducibility.\nChapter 5 applies LeafMachine2\, Euler characteristic transform (ECT)\, and a novel geomorphon‐based classification to analyze 4.6 million individual leaf outlines from nearly half a million herbarium specimens\, covering 12 angiosperm families and close to seven thousand species. ECT matrices capture topological signatures of each leaf outline\, while geomorphon analysis distills leaf margin features into continuous and categorical metrics that quantify toothedness and lobedness. By integrating WorldClim bioclimatic layers with dated phylogenies and analyzing the dataset using linear mixed-effects and phylogenetic regression models\, I demonstrate that the canonical climate–leaf trait associations—larger\, entire-margined leaves in warmer\, wetter environments and more toothed or lobed leaves in cooler\, drier locations—are clade-specific rather than universal across angiosperms. Instead\, family‐ and genus‐specific evolutionary regimes emerge. Phylogenetic correction often weakens climate-leaf area associations while strengthening leaf shape associations with minimum temperatures. Correlated‐trait analyses reveal that margin‐type evolution is climate‐dependent in some woody clades but independent in many herbaceous groups. Overall\, leaf traits are shaped by a dynamic interaction of developmental constraints\, phylogenetic history\, growth habit\, and climate.\nThis dissertation demonstrates that integrating machine learning\, artificial intelligence\, and innovative mathematical approaches transform digitized herbarium specimens into a rigorous analytical foundation for addressing foundational questions in leaf evolution and biogeography. Providing scalable\, streamlined workflows that operate at previously unattainable scales\, these contributions enable researchers to move beyond isolated case studies and achieve a holistic synthesis of how environment\, development\, and phylogenetic history interact to generate the extraordinary diversity of angiosperm leaf forms.

It’s hard not to think of them as physical objects\, but they are really just distorted images of the sun\, positioned around the viewer’s head. They require someone to perceive them to exist\, and thus have much in common with colors and color theory in general. And\, like colors\, they are about relationships: of one color next to another\, and of colors and the people who see them. The rainbow has had many different cultural interpretations over the years\, and most recently has become synonymous with gay pride\, appearing all over each June.\n\nHatcher Gallery Exhibit Room Hours:\nSunday\, 2-8pm\nMonday-Thursday\, 9am-8pm\nFriday\, 9am-4pm\nSaturday\, 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Prelim Seminar Series - Microbial legacies: effects on community structure\, function\, and response dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nLinking community structure to ecological function is a primary goal of community ecology. In microbial ecology\, advances in sequencing technology have allowed widespread profiling of community structure\, and putative functions. However\, whether such descriptive characterization has improved our ability to predict and model microbial response dynamics remains unclear. Structure-function relationships are particularly convoluted in microbial systems due to high levels of genetic diversity\, metabolic plasticity\, context dependency\, and widespread functional redundancy. To this end\, a wide body of research has shown that past events or historical community states can affect contemporary communities. However\, the ways in which legacy effects influence microbial diversity patterns and response dynamics\, particularly in the face of anthropogenic disturbance regimes\, remains poorly understood. Using both an observational and experimental approach\, my research aims to identify the signatures of legacy effects on microbial trait distributions\, and assess whether these effects constrain or augment community response trajectories. Focusing on both soil and freshwater ecosystems\, my research will investigate legacy effects from agricultural management practices and lake eutrophication\, two major drivers of global change. Additionally\, I will explore whether trait distributions and response patterns observed in the laboratory scale up to reflect those observed in a natural ecosystem\, affected by these stressors. Broadly\, my research will contribute to the overall understanding of the factors driving variation in microbial community structure\, and the role of past environmental states or selection regimes play in community functional stability.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Robust Methods for Causal Inference and Policy Learning with Applications to Mobile Health
DESCRIPTION:This dissertation comprises three essays that develop robust methods for causal effect estimation and policy learning\, especially in the context of micro-randomized trials (MRTs)—a longitudinal experimental design used in mobile health (mHealth).\n\nThe first essay develops methods for integrating data across multiple MRTs for the purpose of causal effect estimation. Compared to a single-study analysis\, the methods produce increased statistical efficiency by borrowing information across related studies. Methodologically\, we relate the studies by assuming that certain conditional causal effects are equal across studies\; then we estimate these effects and appropriately average them to target prespecified marginal estimands. \n\nWhereas the first essay develops methods for integrating data across MRTs that have already been implemented\, the second essay introduces the robust mixed-effects (RoME) algorithm for optimizing treatment policies during an MRT. RoME is a contextual bandit algorithm that makes use of mixed-effects modeling\, network cohesion penalties\, doubly robust estimators\, and double/debiased machine learning (DML) to address the specific challenges of mHealth: treatment effect heterogeneity\, cluster structure\, nonstationarity\, and nonlinear relationships. We establish a high-probability regret bound that depends solely on the dimension of the differential-reward model\, enabling strong regret bounds even when the baseline reward is highly complex.\n\nThe third essay steps back from the MRT setting and develops Bayesian Randomization Inference (BRI): a general framework for Bayesian estimation of treatment effects based principally on the physical act of randomization. BRI involves fixing the observed potential outcomes\, positing a probabilistic model for the causal effects\, and forming a likelihood based on the randomization distribution of a statistic. In many cases\, BRI does not require specification of marginal outcome distributions\, resulting in weaker assumptions compared to Bayesian superpopulation-based methods. We prove several theoretical properties for BRI\, including a Bernstein–von Mises theorem and large-sample properties of posterior expectations.

At a time when the world is deeply divided\, when diverse perspectives and experiences are being weaponized by fear\, Nickleson’s paintings meticulously build another world - one mark\, one brush stroke at a time. Layering colors and mark-making that draw on prehistoric forms and symbols\, Nickleson seeks a new futurity that acknowledges the losses\, and co-existence that build on our differences and commonalities. Sara has been consistently building her visual vocabulary and we are excited to see where she will go next.” \nEnvision: The 2025 Michigan Artist Initiative is curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of Joe Rohrer.

SUMMARY:Livestream / Virtual:The 2-Hour Job Search
DESCRIPTION:The most challenging part of the job search is getting an interview. The only predictable way to get an interview is through networking\, but “networking” is frustratingly vague advice. How do you network so that it leads to interviews?\n\nIn this two-hour workshop\, Steve Dalton\, the author of “The 2-Hour Job Search\,” offers an exact process — rather than a series of tips — for effectively turning strangers into advocates\, leading to more internal referrals and more job interviews. This session proposes an efficient alternative to hopelessly applying to online job postings. “The 2-Hour Job Search” turns networking into a finite and repeatable recipe to help job seekers harness free and simple technology to get the right job faster\, and attendees will leave the session knowing exactly what they need to do next.\n\nThis event is a shared partnership between the Ross School of Business Career Development Office and the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan career program.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Decoding Biological Invasions: Impacts and a New Approach to Management
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mariano Rodriguez-Cabal\, a researcher and instructor at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, is a featured speaker in the 2025 Summer Lecture Series at the research and teaching campus nestled along Douglas Lake in Pellston\, Michigan.\n\nRodriguez-Cabal\, who also is a research assistant professor at the University of Vermont in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources\, will give a talk titled “Decoding Biological Invasions: Impacts and a New Approach to Management.”\n\nRodriguez-Cabal is a field ecologist with broad interests in factors that generate\, maintain\, and threaten biodiversity. His research focuses on understanding how species and ecosystems respond to the rampant loss of biodiversity\, climate change\, and the spread of invasive species. He has 15+ years of active research focused on mutualisms loss\, the loss of native species and the gain of invasive species\, global warming and the impacts of habitat fragmentation on the diversity and structure of communities\, and ecosystem processes.\n\nRodriguez-Cabal uses observational\, experimental\, meta-analytical\, and theoretical approaches with the aim of understanding the indirect impacts of global change on biodiversity. Mariano has published 50 peer-reviewed articles on different questions and systems from slugs in British Columbia and ants in North Carolina to endemic marsupials and birds in Patagonia. He is a two-time winner of a Fulbright Scholarship.\n\nHis Ph.D. is from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee. Rodriguez-Cabal earned his master of science from the University of Florida’s Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. His Licentiate in Biological Science is from the Universidad Nacional del Comahue-Centro Regional Universitario Bariloche\, in Patagonia\, Argentina.\n\nThe U-M Biological Station — the largest of U-M's campuses at more than 10\,000 forested acres surrounded by lakes — is one of the nation's largest and longest continuously operating field research stations.\n\nFounded in 1909\, the Biological Station supports long-term research and education. It is where students and scientists from across the globe live and work as a community to learn from the place.\n\nThe Summer Lecture Series is a tradition at UMBS\, where we explore scientific topics with distinguished guest speakers from across the country so our community can learn about our natural world.\n\nThe free\, public talks are on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. in the spring and summer in Gates Lecture Hall at the University of Michigan Biological Station\, located at 9133 Biological Rd. in Pellston\, Michigan — about 20 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Online Arabic Placement test_July 17\, 2025 (1:00pm-3:30pm EST)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other two portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary. How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the Spring/Summer orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. If you are an existing UM student\, please sign up to take the in-person placement test that is taking place in August.* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * The test assesses students’ proficiency in Standard Arabic (fuSHa)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.* If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement.* Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101\, 201\, 401\, 501 or 504 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester\, and Arabic 102\, 202\, 402\, 511 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 & 102\, combined) AND Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202\, combined) are offered in the Spring-Summer terms.UM’s Arabic curriculum is a dual register curriculum in which students learn to speak and understand the Levantine dialect (the dialect of Jordan\, Syria\, Palestine and Lebanon) in addition to developing the four language skills of formal Arabic (fuSHa). If you have questions regarding the placement test\, please contact the Arabic program director at\, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beyond Survival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Beyond Survival\, an exhibition of works by incarcerated artists in Michigan presented by PCAP co-founder Janie Paul and the Flint Institute of the Arts. The exhibit opens May 30th and runs through September 14th. \n\nThe pieces span nearly 30 years\, many of them having been featured in our Annual Exhibition.\n\n\"Through drawings\, paintings\, and sculptures made with simple materials\, artists expose the harsh realities of incarceration while imagining life beyond prison. These works reveal a longing for home and family\, joy and beauty\, connections to nature\, flights of the imagination\, and journeys toward freedom—acts of creation made despite and in direct response to carceral conditions.\"

SUMMARY:Performance:Seth Walker
DESCRIPTION:“Walker's sweet tenor carries an edge of pain\, as well as affection for blue notes.” - NPR Music\n\nAmong the most prolific artists on the Americana scene today\, Seth Walker is a multi-dimensional talent who combines a gift for melody and lyric alongside a rich\, Gospel-drenched\, Southern-inflected voice with a true blue knack for getting around on the guitar. With his 12th studio album Why The Worry\, Walker further builds upon this reputation. \n\nSet straight by the title’s mantra\, Why The Worry finds the veteran singer-songwriter letting go of the worry about perception\, the worry of over-preparation\, and the worry that seeps in constantly from the news and noise of everyday life. Taking a page from Willie Nelson\, Walker embraced the country music legend's sage wisdom\, “I’ve never seen worry accomplish anything\, so I decided not to do it.” Indeed\, the album was just about finished when Hurricane Helene hit Walker where he lives in the mountains around Asheville\, and as a result\, the record almost didn’t see light. As catastrophe took shape\, the album’s importance wavered in his mind until the central theme came back into view. The worry wouldn’t undo any damage\, and there was still service in song. \n\nGrowing up on a commune in rural North Carolina\, the son of classically trained musicians\, Walker played cello long before discovering the guitar in his 20s. When his introduction to the blues came via his Uncle Landon Walker\, who was both a musician and disc jockey\, his fate was forever sealed. Instantaneously\, Seth was looking to artists like T-Bone Walker\, Snooks Eaglin\, and B.B. King as a wellspring of endless inspiration. The rest is history. He's released twelve albums\, broken into the Top 20 of the Americana Radio Charts\, reached No. 2 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart and received praise from NPR\, American Songwriter\, No Depression and Relix\, among others. \n\nAlongside his extensive songwriting and recording pursuits\, Walker is consistently touring and performing at venues and festivals around the world. Along with headline shows\, he's been invited to open for The Mavericks\, Marc Broussard\, The Wood Brothers\, Raul Malo\, Paul Thorn and Ruthie Foster\, among others. \n\nPrior to relocating to Asheville in 2020\, Walker did stints residing in Austin\, New Orleans and Nashville. He’s used those experiences wisely\, soaking up the sounds and absorbing the musical lineage of these varied places. With a bluesman’s respect for roots and tradition\, coupled with an appreciation for—and successful melding of—contemporary songwriting\, Walker sublimely incorporates a range of styles with warmth and grace. Perhaps Country Standard Time said it best: “If you subscribe to the Big Tent theory of Americana\, then Seth Walker—with his blend of blues\, gospel\, pop\, R&B\, rock\, and a dash country—just might be your poster boy.”

SUMMARY:Performance:Madi Diaz
DESCRIPTION:w/sg Clover County\n\nNew Music!\n\nMadi Diaz is an artist who cuts to the emotional core of her own experiences with startling precision. Her last two albums\, 2021’s History of a Feeling and 2024’s two-time Grammy-nominated Weird Faith\, set off a breakthrough for the professional songwriter. These records won over critics\, audiences\, and other collaborators with well-crafted songs and a compelling arc: first there’s the difficult breakup\, then a mourning period and slowly\, a sense of reinvention\; when love comes around again\, Weird Faith seemed to say\, it’s worth fighting through the fear and uncertainty. Fatal Optimist\, the Nashville singer-songwriter’s forthcoming LP\, could be considered the final chapter in this heartache trilogy\, and also its rawest entry. This time Diaz is asking audiences to lean closer in to hear what she has to say.\n\nIn Diaz’s words\, “Fatal Optimism is the innate hope for something magical. It’s the weird faith that kicks in while knowing that there is just plain risk that comes with wanting someone or something. It’s when you have no control over the outcome\, but still choose to experience every moment that happens\, and put your whole heart in it.”

SUMMARY:Performance:Both Sides Now: The Music and Lives of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen
DESCRIPTION:“Two singer-songwriters sit on the edge of a cliff…”\n\nWith these words\, we are drawn into the world of Both Sides Now - a theatrical concert that explores the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers\, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Created by\, and starring Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz\, the cabaret-style performance traverses decades alongside songs such as A Case of You\, Hallelujah\, Big Yellow Taxi\, Suzanne\, and many more. Both Sides Now is at once a piece of the 60’s and 70’s\, and of right now -- offering us a story about the messiness of being human\, of lives persistently lived at the edge of growth\, and of finding the courage to turn toward one another\, again and again.\n\nRobbie Schaefer:\nRobbie is a rabbi\, singer-songwriter and theatre/film artist. The guitarist and songwriter for the indie folk band Eddie From Ohio has several solo releases as well\, including the 2023 single Under the Sun.\n\nHe is currently at work on a new musical\, The Blue Poppy\, an Irish-Jewish ghost story written in collaboration with Scottish playwright Grace Barnes\, and Songs From The Wilderness\, a new album of Jewish musical midrash (interpretation)\, due for release in early 2026. \n\nDanielle Wertz:\nDanielle is a storyteller\, collaborator\, jazz musician\, composer and arranger. After being named a 2015 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition semi-finalist\, Danielle independently released her debut album\, Intertwined\, which ranked #4 on Capital Bop's list of \"Best DC Jazz Albums of 2017.\" That same year she placed 2nd in the Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition and 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Vocal Competition.\n\nIn 2023 Danielle released her sophomore album\, Other Side. With this project she made a quantum leap as a composer and conceptualist. The album pairs her original compositions with carefully crafted arrangements of standards from the Great American Songbook. Jazziz called the album “expressive and polished” and Jazz Weekly noticed a “Joni Mitchell’d tenderness to her material.”
