DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. There are also activities for young visitors.\n\nThe museum is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.\n\nFull details about the exhibit\, including parking instructions and how to book a free private group tour on a weekday\, are available at http://michmed.org/museum\n\nThe museum has an accessible entrance at the rear of the building.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Opening December 8\, 2025 and running through January 2026\nGalleryDAAS| Haven Hall| G648| Monday - Friday 10-4pm\n\nThis exhibit showcases stories of resistance\, resilience\, and hope\, in the face of mass incarceration\, police violence\, immigrant detention\, and systematic racial criminalization. Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:A New Approach for the Continuous Time Kyle-Back Strategic Insider Equilibrium Problem
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, we consider a continuous-time Kyle-Back model which is a game between an insider and a market maker. The existing literature typically focuses on constructing equilibria with a PDE approach\, which requires certain Markovian structures. We characterize all equilibria through a coupled system of forward-backward SDEs. In particular\, when the time duration is small\, we show that the FBSDE is well-posed\, and therefore the game has a unique equilibrium. Moreover\, this unique equilibrium may be non-Markovian and thus not attainable via the PDE approach. We next study the set value of the game\, which roughly speaking is the set of insider's values over all equilibria and thus is by nature unique. Finally\, we characterize the set value through a level set of a certain standard HJB equation.\nIn the second part of the talk\, we apply the new approach to the Kyle-Back model with dynamic legal risk. In the presence of an active regulator and large numbers of noise traders\, the insider chooses a strategy that conceals his identity within a large volume of surrounding trades and concentrates on medium-sized trades.  We establish an intensity-based mathematical framework for explaining the interconnections between insider trading and stealth trading. It turns out that when the number of noise traders becomes large\, the price impact of the insider asymptotically vanishes\, and consequently the stochastic game becomes deterministic optimizations\, which also carry implications for regulatory investigations and sanctions.\nThe results above include the joint work with Weixuan Xia and with Jianfeng Zhang.

Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Housing Production and the Structural Transformation of China’s Real Estate Development Industry
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Lan Deng\, professor of urban and regional planning at the University of Michigan. She has been studying housing and real estate development in both China and the U.S. Her research examines the different types of interventions the two countries have developed to provide decent housing and quality neighborhoods for their residents. Professor Deng is the North American editor for the international journal Housing Studies. She is also a co-founder of the Collective for Equitable Housing initiative at the University of Michigan.  Professor Deng holds a PhD in city and regional planning from the University of California\, Berkeley\, and a master’s and bachelor’s of science from Peking University\, China.\n\nAbstract: “Housing is a major source of inequality. While extensive research exists on housing market outcomes like affordability and wealth disparities\, studies on how housing is produced are limited. Much of the existing work focuses on regulatory barriers to development. Few have examined the role of the homebuilding industry in shaping housing market outcomes. This gap largely stems from a long-held assumption in housing economics: that homebuilding is a highly competitive sector that\, if left alone\, will produce whatever the market demands. As a result\, the industry is often viewed as a passive actor in urban development process.\n\nThis study challenges this assumption. We argue that the structure and behaviors of the real estate development industry play important roles in shaping housing market outcomes.  This is especially salient in China\, where the industry has become highly concentrated\, with major developers controlling an increasing share of national housing production. Using mixed methods\, this study examines the dynamics driving these structural changes in the Chinese real estate development industry\, with a particular focus on how these changes have affected local housing production. Our findings reveal the changing nature of real estate development\, how it has amplified risks in Chinese housing markets and contributed to the widening of regional inequality.”

The Renaissance marked this turning point: after centuries of ethereal figures floating in abstract space\, artists rediscovered the incarnate human form. Some\, like Leonardo da Vinci\, sought truth through dissection\, while Michelangelo saw in anatomy a path to transcendence. This talk explores how he fused science\, beauty\, and spirit (from the tenderness of the Pietà to the grandeur of the Sistine Chapel) and how the Catholic Church received his daring vision of the human body as a vessel of meaning.\n\nElizabeth Lev\, an acclaimed art historian who teaches in Rome at the University of Mary and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas\, has served as a consultant to the Vatican Museums and written for publications such as The Washington Post and First Things. Author of The Tigress of Forlì and How Catholic Art Saved the Faith\, she has appeared on The Today Show\, Nightline\, and 60 Minutes\, and her TED Talk on the Sistine Chapel has reached over 1.9 million viewers! She is a well-known tour guide and has served as a consultant to the Vatican Museums for their art and faith itineraries\, projects with the Vatican Patrons of the Arts and wrote “Vatican Treasures: The Via Pulchritudinis\,” a film presented to Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. She lives in Rome with her husband\, Thomas Williams\, and their son Joshua and is a certified sommelier. Her insight brings the Renaissance alive. DESCRIPTION:George Boxer's talk:\nTitle: Higher p-adic modular forms\n\nAbstract: The goal of the theory of higher p-adic modular forms is to study the p-adic properties of higher coherent cohomology of Shimura varieties\, just as usual p-adic modular forms are used to study classical modular forms (or coherent H^0).  In this talk I will try to motivate why we should study higher coherent cohomology of Shimura varieties and then give an introduction to higher p-adic modular forms and in particular some generalizations of the works of Hida and Coleman on classicality and families.  All this is joint with Vincent Pilloni.\n\nVincent Pilloni's talk:\nTitle : Frobenius lifting and a geometric theory of companion forms\n\nAbstract : We describe the obstruction to lift Frobenius on Siegel Shimura varieties modulo p^2. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Particle Systems with Local Interactions via Hitting Times and Cascades on Graphs
DESCRIPTION:We study particle systems interacting via hitting times on sparsely connected graphs\, following the framework of Lacker\, Ramanan and Wu (2023). We provide general robustness conditions that guarantee the well-posedness of physical solutions to the dynamics\, and demonstrate their connections to the dynamic percolation theory. We then study the limiting behavior of the particle systems\, establishing the continuous dependence of the joint law of the physical solution on the underlying graph structure with respect to local convergence and showing the convergence of the global empirical measure\, which extends the general results by Lacker et al. to systems with singular interaction. The model proposed provides a general framework for analyzing systemic risks in large sparsely connected financial networks with a focus on local interactions\, featuring instantaneous default cascades. This work is done jointly with Qinxin Yan.

DESCRIPTION:The quadratically regularized optimal transport problem (QOT) has emerged in the literature as a sparse alternative to the celebrated entropically regularized transport problem (EOT). Unlike EOT\, whose solutions always have full support—even for small regularization parameters—QOT solutions\, or QOT plans\, tend to approximate the support of the unregularized transport problem\, which concentrates on the graph of a function under mild conditions. This gives way to some natural questions that I will intend to answer in this talk\, such as: Why do we care about sparsity? How does this sparsity manifest\, and is it monotone? Can we efficiently approximate QOT? This is joint work with my co-advisor Marcel Nutz and Dr. Alberto González-Sanz.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Opening December 8\, 2025 and running through January 2026\nGalleryDAAS| Haven Hall| G648| Monday - Friday 10-4pm\n\nThis exhibit showcases stories of resistance\, resilience\, and hope\, in the face of mass incarceration\, police violence\, immigrant detention\, and systematic racial criminalization. Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will discuss recent developments in the use of solution-generating techniques for computing higher-derivative corrections. In particular\, I will show how to use an O(2\,1) boost to obtain the four-derivative corrections to the Kerr-Sen solution for two choices of higher-derivative action. The resulting solution\, much like the case for Kerr\, is perturbative in the spin parameter\, but I will show how to get the exact thermodynamics and discuss a\nconjectural BPS limit. Time allowing\, I will also discuss ongoing work on the extremal non-supersymmetric Kerr-Sen black hole.

The Alabama musical style blends elements of rock\, country\, and Americana\, and he is recognized for his sharp\, evocative lyrics and distinctive guitar work. As one of the band's primary songwriters\, Cooley has written numerous iconic tracks for Drive-By Truckers\, with his songs often exploring themes of personal introspection\, Southern identity\, and social commentary. Alongside bandmate Patterson Hood\, Cooley has been a driving force behind the band's evolution since their formation in the late 1990s\, contributing to their gritty\, honest sound and critical success.\n\nIn addition to his work with the band\, Cooley has pursued a solo career\, releasing his debut solo album The Fool on Every Corner in December 2012. DESCRIPTION:Spatial organization of protein-based organelles is increasingly recognized as a fundamental requirement for bacterial physiology. Carboxysomes\, encapsulins\, and biomolecular condensates compartmentalize metabolic reactions throughout diverse bacteria\, yet their positioning within cells remains poorly understood. Mislocalization of these structures leads to heterogeneous inheritance\, reduced metabolic output\, and impaired growth\, and poses a major challenge for efforts to engineer synthetic organelles in model hosts such as Escherichia coli. The Maintenance of Carboxysome Distribution (Mcd) system\, composed of the ParA-like ATPase McdA and the adaptor McdB\, directs equidistant positioning of carboxysomes along the nucleoid. Although ParA and MinD family ATPases are well studied\, little is known about the molecular features that govern adaptor specificity and function. Furthermore\, many adaptors\, including McdB\, form biomolecular condensates\, suggesting that phase separation may contribute to organelle control\, but the underlying sequence determinants remain unclear. This dissertation addresses these knowledge gaps by dissecting the regions and residues of McdB that mediate phase separation\, interaction with McdA\, and leverage control of organelle positioning\, and by applying these insights to develop programmable spatial organization tools for synthetic biology.\n\nThe McdB adaptor protein undergoes phase separation. I show here that McdB condensates mature from liquid- to gel-like condensates. Given that glutamine residues are known to contribute to maturation in other condensate-forming proteins\, I mutated a glutamine-rich region of McdB from Synechococcus elongatus to determine its role in McdB structure\, oligomerization and phase separation activity. \n\nSecond\, I generated sequence variants in Halothiobacillus neapolitanus McdB and showed that specific N-terminal basic residues\, particularly K7\, are necessary for full McdA engagement and proper carboxysome distribution in vivo\, revealing that cargo positioning and cargo partitioning are mechanistically separable functions of the Mcd system. \n\nThird\, I translated these mechanistic insights into a synthetic\, minimal positioning toolkit by engineering modular “Minimal Autonomous Positioning” (Map) tags derived from McdB. When fused to biomolecular condensates or encapsulins in Escherichia coli\, Map tags conferred McdA-dependent nucleoid-associated spacing patterns\, transforming immobile aggregates into dynamic and evenly distributed intracellular structures. \n\nTogether\, this work identifies domain- and residue-level determinants that govern McdB-mediated organelle positioning and condensate behavior\, clarifies adaptor-ATPase specificity principles in ParA/MinD-type systems\, and establishes a transferable genetic strategy for engineering intracellular spatial organization in bacteria. These findings advance both fundamental understanding of bacterial cell organization and the development of spatially programmable tools for microbial synthetic biology.

Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Committee Chairs: Brent Gillespie and Ella Atkins\n\nZoom Link: https://umich.zoom.us/j/95579522863\n\nAbstract: \nUncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) have become essential in tasks that are too difficult or dangerous for humans. This dissertation was initially inspired by the challenge of making rainforest tree sampling safer for botanists\, who often need to climb dangerously tall trees. Building on this motivation\, we developed a new approach for aerial manipulation that enables interaction with objects of unknown dynamics through intentional collisions using a pogo-stick payload. The key insight is that intentional collisions consolidate all potential disturbance forces into a single impulse\, the outcome of which is hopefully simpler to predict. Given assumptions on the dynamics of the interaction object\, the map from pre- to post-impact states (collision response) is known\, providing an opportunity to choose pre-impact states that will result in recoverable post-impact states.\n\nThe use of intentional collisions with a UAS presents unique challenges due to underactuation. Collision outcomes are set by strike velocity and orientation\, yet hitting a desired point requires full position control. Traditional UAS actuator configurations cannot provide both full position and attitude control authority. This dissertation presents several approaches to mitigate underactuation and enable aerial manipulation with intentional collisions.\n\nTo begin\, this dissertation develops the strategy of using intentional collisions in a flight mode called Velocity Matching. The Velocity Matching flight mode starts in two phases: launch phase and then the Velocity Matching phase. During the launch phase\, the UAS is sped up horizontally to \"launch\" the vehicle\, assumed thereafter to behave ballistically\, towards the target. After launch\, the Velocity Matching phase is entered\, and thrust is limited to the bare minimum thrust required for attitude control. During the Velocity Matching phase the minimal thrust attitude control is used to align the center-of-mass velocity vector of the UAS with the pogo-stick’s orientation at strike. Using simulation and flight tests\, we generate a map from pre-launch modes states into recoverable post-impact states\, allowing for planned strikes.\n\nSecond\, we refine the flight control from Velocity Matching to a cascaded position–attitude switching controller (called Switching Control). In the Switching Control mode\, the UAS flies in position cascaded PID control for most of the trajectory\, then switches at the last moment to attitude cascaded PID control for pre-strike alignment. We also provide a tool to predict the best switching time from an initial displacement\, and we validate the approach experimentally.\n\nFinally\, we develop a new control approach involving an actuated pogo-stick payload controlled via a partial feedback linearizing controller to regulate both UAS position and pogo-stick orientation. After validating the actuated pogo-stick in simulation\, we built a physical cable-driven version that slides along a hemispherical base. This mechanism provides two-degree-of-freedom orientation control (pitch and roll compensation) and keeps the pogo-stick perpendicular to the UAS center of mass\, enabling more favorable\, recoverable collision responses.

Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. There are also activities for young visitors.\n\nThe museum is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.\n\nFull details about the exhibit\, including parking instructions and how to book a free private group tour on a weekday\, are available at http://michmed.org/museum\n\nThe museum has an accessible entrance at the rear of the building.

DESCRIPTION:A Celtic tapestry\n\nMembers of the Michigan Irish American Hall of Fame\, Blackthorn offers shows that involve a musical ramble across Ireland. Traditional songs of emigration\, ballads\, shanties and jigs and reels combine with some of Ireland's best contemporary songs for a musical experience that is uniquely Irish. DESCRIPTION:“Radiant and transportive” –No Depression\n\nDuring the creative explosion that was country music in the 1990s Suzy Bogguss sold 4 million records with sparkling radio hits like “Outbound Plane\,” “Someday Soon\,” “Letting Go\,” “Drive South\,” and “Hey Cinderella.\" But you can’t peg Suzy that easily… \n\nIn the midst of her country popularity she took time off to make a duets album with  the legendary Chet Atkins. In 2003 she made an album of modern swing music with Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel. An album of original music in 2007 landed her at number 4 on the jazz charts. Her folk music roots show through in her frequent appearances on public radio’s A Prairie Home Companion\, in the Grammy she earned for her work on Beautiful Dreamer: The Songs of Stephen Foster\, and in her critically acclaimed album and book project from 2011\, American Folk Songbook. In 2014 she released Lucky\, a collection of songs written by Merle Haggard and interpreted through Suzy’s crystal vocals from the female point of view. Her latest offering\, Prayin’ For Sunshine\, is an Americana tour de force with all songs written by Bogguss. \n\nShe continues to tour the world\, both on her own and with fellow country radio divas Terri Clark and Pam Tills as “Chicks With Hits” and more recently\, with Kathy Mattea on their Together At  Last tour. So yes\, you can call her a country singer if you want\, but really that’s just the beginning.

DESCRIPTION:Legendary bluegrass\n\nFifty-three years into a legendary career\, much has changed about The Seldom Scene\, starting with the venerable progressive bluegrass quintet’s various lineup iterations over time. But even as band members have stepped in and out of various roles\, what’s most important is what hasn’t changed: an undeniable knack for blending both old and new music and traditions without sacrificing what makes either potent and durable. Their current iteration is a true blue lineup: guitarist mandolin player Lou Reid\, bassist Ronnie Simpkins\, banjoist and fiddler Ron Stewart\, dobro player Fred Travers\, and guitarist Clay Hess.\n\nSince they started up together in 1971\, The Seldom Scene has dexterously performed original and traditional songs while presenting fiery and soulful reinterpretations of material by Merle Haggard\, James Taylor\, and more. The concept of bluegrass unshackling itself from a conservative\, straight-ahead mindset seems like a given now\, when some of its biggest stars fill stadiums and cross over with mainstream audiences\, but the continued presence of the Scene acts as a reminder that it wasn’t always so. Even if their playing style feels more at home in intimate clubs\, where the audience can feel their exuberance radiating from the stage\, the Scene’s elastic relationship to genre established an important precedent that encouraged their contemporaries and allowed bluegrass bands to expand their repertoire in ways that laid the groundwork for today’s bluegrass boom.
