SUMMARY:Exhibition:Creating the Future of Medicine for 175 Years
DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. There are also activities for young visitors.\n\nThe museum is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.\n\nFull details about the exhibit\, including parking instructions and how to book a free private group tour on a weekday\, are available at http://michmed.org/museum\n\nThe museum has an accessible entrance at the rear of the building.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:Opening December 8\, 2025 and running through January 2026\nGalleryDAAS| Haven Hall| G648| Monday - Friday 10-4pm\n\nThis exhibit showcases stories of resistance\, resilience\, and hope\, in the face of mass incarceration\, police violence\, immigrant detention\, and systematic racial criminalization. Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.b. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.\nWhere can I view my results?a. Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test.b. You will not be notified of your score automatically. c. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in\, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* Students who are currently taking an Arabic course will not be allowed to take the placement test. * Students who took or are currently enrolled in an Arabic course are not eligible to take the Arabic placement test. They should register for the next course level.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)\, NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge\, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before\, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM\, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level\, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in\, or if they test out of the language requirement. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamping and Stomping: community inspired relief prints
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Ann Arbor\, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima\, Peru. Paloma attended art college in Mexico\, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa\, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers\, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997\, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration\, social in-visibility\, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories\, Nunez-Regueiro’s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nNúñez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad — the impermanence\, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one’s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. She is an incessantly positive artist and she profoundly believes in art as a tool to create the social change that can lead us to thoughtful actions\, and the bettering of ourselves and our communities.

Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. In this talk\, Dr. Richmond-Rakerd will (a) review salient features of population-level administrative data\, drawing on the New Zealand Integrated Data Infrastructure as a case example\; and (b) highlight advantages of these data for health and aging research\, with examples from her team’s own work. She will also discuss ethical issues and methodological considerations and limitations in population administrative data research.\n\nBiography\nLeah Richmond-Rakerd is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her research centers on the development of problems in self-regulation\, such as antisocial behavior\, substance misuse\, and self-harm\, as well as the implications of self-regulation difficulties for processes of aging and inequalities in population health. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Toward Improved Neuroprosthetic Control of Multiple Degrees of Freedom for Fingers and Wrist via Implanted Neural Interfaces
DESCRIPTION:Committee Chair: Cynthia Chestek\n\nAbstract:\nModern prosthetic and robotic hands offer significant opportunities to restore limb function for individuals with limb loss or impairment. However\, the current standard of control for many of these devices does not provide sufficiently rich control signals to match the number of movements these hands can perform. Implanted neural interfaces offer a promising approach to obtain control signals with substantially higher spatial and temporal resolution than noninvasive technologies. These interfaces have the potential to improve control of multiple degrees of freedom in the fingers and hand\, and to incorporate additional degrees of freedom such as the wrist. This dissertation investigates how implanted neural interfaces can be used to improve control of multiple degrees of freedom in the hand and wrist.\n\nFirst\, we examine an augmentation to an intracortical brain–machine interface decoder designed to reduce errors during control of multiple finger groups. Two non-human primates were implanted with intracortical microelectrode arrays in the hand-knob area of primary motor cortex and trained to control a virtual hand using intracortical neural signals. Neural activity from the arrays was associated with finger kinematics to create a decoder controlling the index and middle-ring-small finger groups. Movement errors were classified using the same intracortical data and incorporated into a subsequent closed-loop control session to detect and correct errors in real time. Incorporating error correction resulted in a significantly lower orbiting time around targets\, with an average reduction of 26%. This reduction represents an important improvement in control and may provide even greater benefit in human users\, where control errors occur more frequently.\n\nNext\, we investigate a peripheral nervous system interface technology rather than intracortical signals. Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces (RPNIs) provide a rich source of peripheral nerve control signals for individuals with limb loss by amplifying efferent nerve activity for muscles lost with the limb. Two participants with upper limb loss between the elbow and wrist received RPNIs and implanted electrodes in both the RPNIs and residually innervated muscles. Classifiers were trained to decode implanted neural signals into discrete finger and wrist movements\, and performance was compared to classifiers trained using surface electrodes. Implanted electrodes provided an average improvement in classification accuracy of over 38% during arm movement. This improvement translated to a reduction in task completion time of over 27% in one participant during an activity of daily living performed using the implanted classifier compared to the surface-based classifier.\n\nFinally\, we evaluated continuous control of the hand and wrist in the same two participants. Participants controlled a virtual hand using a reduced set of hand and wrist rotation targets. Implanted electrodes provided high-correlation control signals for both hand and wrist and outperformed surface electrodes in closed-loop control. In one participant\, implanted and surface decoders were trained and tested in both sitting and arm-out-front postures. Surface decoders tested in a posture different from training exhibited an increase in trial time compared to implanted decoders in a different posture\, along with a reduction in success rate between surface and implanted decoders.\n\nTogether\, these results demonstrate that implanted neural interfaces enable more precise and accurate control of finger and wrist movements. Future work will focus on further improving control through advanced machine learning methods\, improved training data labeling\, and translation to fully implantable systems suitable for use outside the laboratory.\n\nIn-person and on Zoom (Passcode: 680207)

DESCRIPTION:The pyramids of ancient Egypt and of preHispanic Mesoamerica have fascinated people since the cultures that built them vanished into the annals of history. How were they built? What were they used for? Are there unknown internal substructures\, perhaps hidden chambers that have yet to be discovered? Using the detector technology we developed for a particle physics experiment at Fermilab\, we intend to perform non-invasive searches for hidden structures at the Great Pyramid of Khufu\, in Egypt\, and at the Temple of Kukulkán at Chichén Itzá. The apparatus will detect cosmic-ray muons produced high in the atmosphere that course through the pyramids to produce a tomographic image of their interiors. I will describe in detail the technique we are using\, present simulation results\, detector prototype results\, and the status of both experiments.

DESCRIPTION:We investigate a time-inconsistent\, non-Markovian finite-player game in continuous time\, where each player's objective functional depends non-linearly on the expected value of the state process. As a result\, the classical Bellman optimality principle no longer applies. To address this\, we adopt a two-layer game-theoretic framework and seek sub-game--perfect Nash equilibria both at the intra-personal level\, which accounts for time inconsistency\, and at the inter-personal level\, which captures strategic interactions among players. We first characterise sub-game--perfect Nash equilibria and the corresponding value processes of all players through a system of coupled backward stochastic differential equations. We then analyse the mean-field counterpart and its sub-game--perfect mean-field equilibria\, described by a system of McKean-Vlasov backward stochastic differential equations. Building on this representation\, we finally prove the convergence of sub-game--perfect Nash equilibria and their corresponding value processes in the N-player game to their mean-field counterparts. DESCRIPTION:The application window for the 2026 Leadership Crisis Challenge (LCC) opens on Wednesday\, January 7!\n\nLCC is a premier action-based learning experience that immerses participants in a simulated business and media crisis\, powered by the Sanger Leadership Center at Michigan Ross. Students play the part of executives responding to the issues as they unfold\, while leveraging the expertise of communication coaches\, faculty\, and a board of directors made up of esteemed U-M alumni\, to prepare for a press conference attended by real members of the media.\n\nThis year's LCC will be held on January 29-30 and is open to ALL U-M students. There are two levels of competition—graduate and undergraduate. Two undergraduate teams and two graduate teams will receive a scholarship\, split among participants. SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamping and Stomping: community inspired relief prints
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Ann Arbor\, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima\, Peru. Paloma attended art college in Mexico\, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa\, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers\, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997\, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration\, social in-visibility\, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories\, Nunez-Regueiro’s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nNúñez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad — the impermanence\, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one’s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. She is an incessantly positive artist and she profoundly believes in art as a tool to create the social change that can lead us to thoughtful actions\, and the bettering of ourselves and our communities.

DESCRIPTION:Opening December 8\, 2025 and running through January 2026\nGalleryDAAS| Haven Hall| G648| Monday - Friday 10-4pm\n\nThis exhibit showcases stories of resistance\, resilience\, and hope\, in the face of mass incarceration\, police violence\, immigrant detention\, and systematic racial criminalization. Archives of Resistance presents art\, prisoner correspondence\, research publications\, and archival documentation produced by the component projects of the Carceral State Project. These include: The Reckoning Project\, Immigrant Justice Lab\, Black & Pink at SPH\, ICE in the Heartland\, Critical Carceral Visualities\, Policing & Social Justice HistoryLab\, and Confronting Conditions of Confinement and Resistance. Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

DESCRIPTION:Global Women's Health Innovation\nAbstract:\nDhanu Thiyag\, MD MPH FACOG is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Affiliate Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. As a clinician-scientist\, she focuses on designing and clinically evaluating medical devices and simulation-based educational programming specifically for the goal of women’s health equity. This is crucial as medical devices and programming not designed for the context of use are typically neither sustained nor disseminated. Examples of her work include devices for cervical cancer screening to diagnosing postpartum hemorrhage as well as simulation-based education to prevent cesarean deliveries to conducting less invasive gynecology surgery. She also focuses efforts on capacity building for women in engineering and clinical research with efforts in Ghana\, Rwanda\, and the USA. She has been recognized for her efforts with a University of Michigan Outstanding International Collaboration Award and as a STAT Wunderkind.  She will be presenting on her utilization of a human-centered design process from the needs assessment to validation testing. She will be using one of her devices and one of her simulation projects as an example.

DESCRIPTION:The Vakil--Zinger space is a normal crossings compactification of the mapping space from smooth elliptic curves to projective space. In this talk\, I will discuss how the modular interpretation of the space given by Ranganathan--Santos-Parker--Wise leads to a description of its boundary stratification and a calculation of its cohomology. Partly joint work with Siddarth Kannan.

DESCRIPTION:The dispersion-managed nonlinear Schrödinger equation models the propagation of pulses through long-haul optical fibers\, where the dispersion profile—and hence the focusing or defocusing nature—varies periodically. When the dispersion oscillates rapidly\, this leads to the Gabitov–Turitsyn equation\, a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation obtained by evolving the nonlinearity under the linear flow and averaging in time.\n\nDespite substantial attention in physics and numerics\, rigorous results for this model are rare and the sharp well-posedness theory has remained largely unclear. In this talk\, we present recent results that identify a threshold for well-posedness\, below which contraction mapping arguments fail\, and a second\, distinct threshold below which norm inflation can be shown under suitable restrictions.

DESCRIPTION:Since 2022\, the Russo-Ukrainian war has shaken the global order—and transformed countless individual lives. Drawing on years of personal correspondence\, interviews\, and diary entries\, historian Danielle Leavitt follows seven Ukrainians through the first year and a half of Russia’s war on Ukraine. Tracing how individuals navigate the challenges of conflict\, displacement\, and daily survival\, she bridges historical analysis and lived experience to reveal how the past and its stories shape the present. Told in staggering human detail that feels both palpable and resonant\, By the Second Spring offers a window into the human dimensions of war—where history\, memory\, and survival intersect every day. In this talk\, Leavitt tells the story of Ukraine’s war in seven lives and reflects on what it means to write a people-centered history of the present.\n   \n   Danielle Leavitt is a historian of modern Ukraine and the Soviet Union\, with a particular interest in Russian and Ukrainian relations\, human age\, generation\, and gender. Her work examines the function of generation and human age in Soviet history and works to insert the stories of underrepresented populations\, such as the elderly and women\, into consequential debates about stagnation\, cultural life\, Soviet collapse\, post-Soviet economic and political development\, and the Russo-Ukrainian war.\n\n   Dr. Leavitt’s first book\, *By the Second Spring: Seven Lives and One Year of the War in Ukraine* (2025\, FSG)\, charted the lives of seven Ukrainians through the first year of Russia’s war on Ukraine. Based on a unique set of online diaries\, Leavitt contextualized her seven subjects\, Ukrainian society\, and its predicaments for a wide audience\, introducing readers to a rigorous but accessible history of Ukraine\, the Soviet Union\, its collapse\, and Russia’s historical relationship with its neighbors.\n\nLeavitt received her PhD in History from Harvard University in 2023. DESCRIPTION:Laz and San Slomovits\, the duo Gemini\, moved to Ann Arbor in 1973\, and have played The Ark every year since then. About twenty years ago\, San’s daughter\, Emily\, began joining them on stage\, necessitating a new name for their trio\, Gemily (Gemini + Emily). They’re known for their beautiful voices\, genetically tight harmonies\, a stage-full of instruments\, and songs and instrumentals ranging from traditional American and British Isles folk music\, to songs of the 60s Folk Revival\, klezmer tunes\, pop songs and their own originals. Above all\, audiences have come to love their sense of ease and joy on stage. San and Laz will be celebrating their 154th birthday with this show (they’re twins – you do the math) and will be joined by Emily plus their Good Mischief Band.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:ICE in the Heartland: Community Impacts of Worksite Immigration Raids
DESCRIPTION:ICE in the Heartland showcases a multifaceted project that gathers and disseminates the stories of communities impacted by immigration worksite raids with the aim of bringing underrepresented narratives to news media\, classroom\, and public discourse. This project comprises qualitative public health research conducted in impacted communities and visual arts generated from the research outcomes. Research teams of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Michigan\, led by Professor William Lopez\, and the University of Iowa\, led by Professor Nicole Novak\, collaborated with a range of community members and organizers at sites of six large-scale immigration worksite raids that occurred in 2018 in Iowa\, Nebraska\, Ohio\, Tennessee\, and Texas. The researchers visited these sites\, spoke to advocates\, detainees\, their families\, and other community members. In conversation with the seventy-seven interviews\, artists Dalia Harris and Carolina Jones Ortiz generated ten images that comprise ICE in the Heartland. On display with the artworks are community member testimonies\, analysis on the public health detriments to immigration worksite raids and deportation\, insights to the artists’ methods\, and the curricular materials used in public outreach programs. \n\nHosted and sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies\, U-M.

DESCRIPTION:In Person: This program is offered twice a year for U-M Student Life staff free of charge. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a terrific tool for helping people change behavior. It's especially helpful for medical staff (lifestyle changes and medication adherence)\, therapists/counselors for behavior change to support mental health\, and wellness coaches. Its use is being expanded to Student Life advisers\, supervisors\, and more. Learn basic\, foundational skills for MI\, including spirit (Compassion\, Acceptance\, Partnership\, Evocation)\, OARS (open questions\, affirmations\, reflections\, summaries)\, identifying and responding to change talk\, and a brief overview of discord (if time permits). There will be plenty of practice in \"real plays\" (you get to work on your own behavior changes that you are ambivalent about--so bring a couple behaviors you'd like to change. While you won't be an expert at MI when you are done\, you will be able to start the practice\, move forward in your skills\, and know how to improve. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Stamping and Stomping: community inspired relief prints
DESCRIPTION:Currently based in Ann Arbor\, Paloma Núñez-Regueiro is a Mexican printmaker born in Lima\, Peru. Paloma attended art college in Mexico\, where she came face to face with printmaking during her first year at the Facultad de Artes Plásticas (College of Arts) in Xalapa\, Veracruz. She became fascinated with the possibilities that printmaking offers\, as well as its importance in popular resistance throughout history. In 1997\, she transferred to the Rochester Institute of Technology with an International Student Scholarship.\n-- \n\nAmongst the subjects that interest her are human migration\, social in-visibility\, and the intrinsic relation of humans to the universe as well as our dislocated relationship to it. She currently explores the vicissitudes of minorities and their stories in order to create a better understanding of their issues. By offering portraits of minorities and their stories\, Nunez-Regueiro’s goal is to create supportive communities for those who need to feel rooted in their geographical space and their present time. \n\nNúñez-Regueiro work is closely related to her experiences of living abroad — the impermanence\, the precarious construction of one's present and even less of one’s future. It is about the rootlessness of those of us who move from place to place. She is an incessantly positive artist and she profoundly believes in art as a tool to create the social change that can lead us to thoughtful actions\, and the bettering of ourselves and our communities.

Artwork made by people in prison through Prison Creative Arts Project workshops is also on display. \n\nThe U-M Carceral State Project\, housed within the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies\, brings impacted communities and advocacy organizations together with researchers from the University of Michigan. The CSP was first organized in 2018 and has since grown to involve over a dozen community and campus partners\, many graduate students\, and more than 400 undergraduate researchers. \n\nThrough public scholarship\, creative expression\, multimedia storytelling\, and archival documentation\, we highlight the lived experiences and persistent resistance of those impacted by criminalization\, policing\, incarceration\, immigrant detention\, and other forms of carceral control in the state of Michigan and beyond. The work presented in this exhibit represents only a sliver of the extensive research\, art\, advocacy\, public engagement\, and other products generated by the Carceral State Project over the years.

DESCRIPTION:Vinson Lam performs on the Charles Baird Carillon\, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell\, which strikes the hour\, weighs 12 tons\, while the smallest bell\, 4½ octaves above\, weighs just 15 pounds.\n\nThirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session\, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8)\, and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Hearing protection earmuffs are provided for visitors. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936\, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:  We study isometric immersions of a two-dimensional Riemannian surface into three-dimensional Euclidean space. We consider their bending energy\,  i.e.\, the square-integral of their second fundamental form\, which is equivalent to the Willmore functional. We obtain two new lower bounds for this energy\, one in terms of the Gaussian curvature of the surface\, and the other in terms of a Burgers vector---a measure of non-flatness connected to torsion. These new estimates provide optimal blowup rates of the energy when the curvature is concentrated (e.g.\, in a conical geometry). In the more subtle case of dipoles of concentrated curvature\,  we use the Burgers vector estimates to obtain an optimal blowup rate in terms of the size of the system. Our motivation comes from non-Euclidean elasticity\, in which cones and curvature-dipoles play a central role. The lower bounds derived in this work directly yield lower bounds for the elastic energy of thin elastic sheets. DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. There are also activities for young visitors.\n\nThe museum is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.\n\nFull details about the exhibit\, including parking instructions and how to book a free private group tour on a weekday\, are available at http://michmed.org/museum\n\nThe museum has an accessible entrance at the rear of the building.
