DESCRIPTION:The \"Engaged Mentoring\" series is for faculty mentors of research trainees at any stage of training. This program is an evidence-based\, interactive approach designed to elevate mentoring skills for engaging in productive\, culturally responsive research mentoring relationships. The program aims to accelerate the process of becoming an effective research mentor by providing mentors with an intellectual framework\, an opportunity to experiment with various methods\, and a forum in which to solve mentoring dilemmas with the help of their peers. By the end of the program\, mentors will have articulated their style and philosophy of mentoring and have a toolbox of strategies for approaching difficult mentoring situations. These skills will support the success of both mentors and mentees\, and it is responsive to the NIGMS guidelines regarding the preparation of mentors involved in training grants.\n\nThe OGPS Engaged Mentoring Series\, focuses on the five themes below. SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the first two portions of the test. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.\nImportant information about the test* Please note that only students who are participating in the Spring/Summer orientations are eligible to take the online placement test. DESCRIPTION:Legalization and commercialization of cannabis have led to rapid changes in cannabis consumption in the United States. Frank’s research focuses on interventions to expand access to evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders. He will share information on changing cannabis use patterns in Michigan and the risks and benefits of cannabis\, including the drug’s impact on seniors and others on cognitive function\, anxiety\, safe driving\, and chronic pain. Additionally\, he will describe harm reduction strategies to address high-risk use. Frank\, a Michigan alumnus and graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine\, is an educator and clinical consultant for U-M’s Overdose Prevention and Engagement Network\, co-director of Training & Education for the U-M Opioid Research Institute\, and chair of the Washtenaw County Board of Health.

DESCRIPTION:“a workhorse of a songwriter who delivers hard truths with the softest of whispers” –NPR\n\nJoe Pernice is a songwriter celebrated for his rare ability to pair luminous melodies with quietly devastating emotional depth. Over the course of a career spanning more than three decades\, Pernice has built a body of work that is literate\, melodic\, and enduring—music that reveals new layers with each listen.\n\nFirst gaining attention in the early 1990s with alt-country band Scud Mountain Boys\, Pernice later founded the Pernice Brothers\, a project that would firmly establish his reputation as one of the most refined songwriters of his generation. From the initial Overcome by Happiness and across numerous albums\, his songs have been marked by elegant arrangements\, strong pop instincts\, and lyrics that balance wit\, melancholy\, and narrative precision. Drawing from folk\, power pop\, and chamber pop traditions\, Pernice’s music feels both timeless and unmistakably personal. His collaborations with a range of musicians include Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub)\, Joshua Karp\, Neko Case\, Aimee Mann\, and the iconic Jimmy Webb.\n\nCritics have consistently praised his work for its craftsmanship and emotional intelligence. DESCRIPTION:Melding the sounds of America with the sounds of Uganda\n\nFor Jon Muq\, a singer-songwriter born in Uganda and now living in Austin\, Texas\, music is part of a larger conversation he’s having with the world and everybody in it. Drawing from African as well as western musical trends and traditions\, he devises songs as small gifts\, designed to settle into everyday life and provoke reflection and resilience. “These days the world is sad\,” he explains\, “so I wanted to make happy songs. I wanted to write songs that connected with the listener in a very personal way. When someone listens to my music\, it’s not just about me and what I’m singing. It’s about how they understand the songs individually. I think these songs can speak many languages\, depending on what you want from them.”\n\nMuq’s experiences as a child in Uganda and as a man in America give him a unique perspective on the world he’s addressing. “I grew up in a very different life\, where so many people pass through hard times just because they don’t have much. Our biggest issue was food scarcity. Then I came to a different world\, which gave me a picture of how to write a song that can find balance with everyone wherever they are\, whether they have a lot or not much.” With his May 31st debut album with producer Dan Auerbach and tours with Billy Joel\, Norah Jones\, Mavis Staples\, Amythyst Kiah\, Corinne Bailey Rae\, and others\, Muq is expanding the scope of his music to speak to more and more people.

DESCRIPTION:“a storyteller in the best traditions of Mellencamp and Springsteen” –USA Today\n\nAfter 23 years as a recording artist\, singer-songwriter Chris Knight remains boldly empowered to make music that always delivers the unflinching truth. In fact\, the man raised in Slaughters\, Kentucky uses a simple\, direct barometer to regularly check his muse: “If I can’t believe myself\, I won’t sing the song.”\n\nWhat Knight writes about is what he knows. He was raised in mining country\, so it’s no surprise that he would earn a degree in agriculture from Western Kentucky University and then work as a mine reclamation inspector and then miner’s consultant. But eventually his passion for writing songs and playing guitar\, both inspired by his musical hero\, the late John Prine\, led him to chronicle his surroundings in words and music.\n\n“I came from a big family and grew up in the woods six miles from two small towns\, so there were a lot of stories\,” he says. “There were always a lot of ideas to write about.”\n\nIt’s no wonder that Knight has single-handedly scraped a reputation as one of America’s most uncompromising and respected singer-songwriters through 23 years and nine studio albums. He’s done this minus fanfare and artifice. The native son of Slaughters\, Kentucky (population: 238) only sings songs he believes. He also speaks only when he has a potent message.

Our research focuses on histone modifications such as lysine methylation\, and the proteins that recognize these modifications\, which are often referred to as chromatin ‘readers’. Chromatin readers can recruit and act as part of diverse chromatin modifying protein complexes to mediate the silencing of many genes with important functions in cell proliferation and differentiation. We will use a combination of genetic\, biochemical and genome-wide sequencing approaches to investigate the striking regulatory complexity of chromatin readers. Our research will contribute to a better understanding of how cells acquire and maintain different fates during development\, how chromatin readers contribute to epigenetic inheritance\, and how aberrant regulation of histone methylation contributes to the pathogenesis of several human diseases\, including cancers.

DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, Dr. Thiago Gonçalves-Souza will give a free\, public talk focused on a simple but important question: When forests are broken into pieces\, can biodiversity be maintained across the broader landscape? \n\nUsing data across six continents\, he challenges the idea of fragmentation in his talk titled\, “Nature in Pieces: Why Large\, Continuous\, Connected Forests Hold More Life.”\n\nThe postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan will explore why protecting large\, continuous\, and connected forests remains essential for conserving biodiversity.  \n\nGonçalves-Souza\, a quantitative community ecologist\, teaches a General Ecology Lecture course at UMBS.\n\nHis current research centers around synthesizing the effects of human-mediated habitat loss and climate change on animals and plants. With a broad taxonomic scope ranging from arthropods to mammals\, Gonçalves-Souza uses quantitative tools to unravel the intricate dynamics of biodiversity change. He also investigates the utility of traits in predicting species redistributions across local and global scales.\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. DESCRIPTION:Our Open Stage Showcase lets us shine a light on some of our standout performers who’ve graced our Open Stage through the year.\n\nBob Hoot of HOOT and Hollers is a singer/songwriter living in Whitmore Lake\, MI. Hoot moved back to Michigan in January 2024 after 45 years in Madison WI where he performed and recorded with with Tent Show Troubadours (2016–2023) and HOOT and Hollers (est. 2020– ) Hoot has been performing solo shows in and around the Ann Arbor area\, primarily in the summer outdoor concert season. Set lists include songs from Hoot’s catalog of over 115 originals\, as well as favorite covers. Bob Hoot will be joined by Gabrielle Hartman (violin).\n\nPeter Bedford began to teach himself how to play guitar after listening to James Taylor's \"Sweet Baby James\" album in 1970.  After teaching school for 40 years and continuing to play and teach private lessons\, he moved back to Michigan and began to attend and play at the Ark's Open Stage nights.  Through the luck of the draw and with the support of many loyal friends he found himself on stage more often than not.  Pete says that he is deliberately keeping a lot of old songs alive by performing them and talking about them.  With a songbook of nearly 200 songs in his head\, you can expect to hear a sampling of them at the Showcase.  Pete frequently performs with life-long friend\, Gary Putrow accompanying him on bass under the name \"Pete and Putts\". Gary will join Pete on a number of tunes.
