SUMMARY:Exhibition:Creating the Future of Medicine for 175 Years
DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. There are also activities for young visitors.\n\nThe museum is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.\n\nFull details about the exhibit\, including parking instructions and how to book a free private group tour on a weekday\, are available at http://michmed.org/museum\n\nThe museum has an accessible entrance at the rear of the building.

DESCRIPTION:From September 2025 through August 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Using Science to Make a Difference: The Work to Reduce Global Mercury Pollution”
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2026 Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station (UMBS)\, Dr. Linda Greer will give a free\, public talk titled\, “Using Science to Make a Difference: The Work to Reduce Global Mercury Pollution.”\n\nAlthough many study environmental science because they are concerned about the health of the planet\, most apply their training to research or teaching following their education. \n\nA UMBS alumna\, Greer earned a Ph.D. in environmental toxicology with a “hard science” dissertation but spent her career at the Natural Resources Defense Council working with lawyers and policy experts to promote improvements in environmental laws and regulations and to pressure corporations to reduce their pollution abroad.\n\nIn this talk\, Greer will describe the use of science in her advocacy\, illustrating this line of work with the story of reducing global mercury pollution.\n\nLinda Greer is an environmental toxicologist who worked on toxic chemical and industrial pollution with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) for nearly 30 years. She capped her career overseeing green supply chain initiatives for four years with the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs\, the leading environmental NGO in China and now works as an independent consultant.\n\nLinda spent most of her career on domestic environmental law and policy. As manufacturing moved abroad\, however\, she turned her attention to global pollution matters\, concentrating her work internationally.\n\nFocusing first on mercury pollution\, Linda was a founder and leader of the NGO’s community’s successful effort to pass the Minamata Convention in the United Nations\, a binding international treaty to reduce the use and release of this toxic metal around the globe.\n\nSubsequently\, Linda turned to China\, creating NRDC’s Clean by Design Program\, a highly successful green supply chain initiative that promotes improvements in apparel manufacturing.\n\nFor more than a decade\, Linda taught a popular summer intensive course\, “Scientific Fundamentals of Risk Assessment” at Vermont Law School\, and she has also taught short courses for the National Association of State Attorney Generals and the U.S. Department of Justice Department of Environmental Crimes.\n\nGreer served as the interim director of the University of Michigan Biological Station in 2016-2017 during a sabbatical break from advocacy.\n\nLinda has served on many expert panels and commissions\, including the National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board. She currently serves on the board of the Cary Institute.\n\nLinda is the author of over a dozen technical and policy articles on environmental matters and has frequently testified before Congress. She has a Ph.D. in environmental toxicology (U of Maryland)\, a M.S.P.H. in environmental sciences and engineering (UNC School of Public Health\, Chapel Hill)\, and a B.S. in biology (Tufts University).\n\nThe University of Michigan Biological Station serves as a gathering place to learn from the natural world\, advance research and education\, and inspire action. We leverage over a century of research and transformative experiences to drive discoveries and solutions to benefit Michigan and beyond.\n\nFounded in 1909\, UMBS supports long-term research and education through immersive\, field-based courses and features state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for data collection and analysis to help any field researcher be productive. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test takes approximately three hours in length\, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed via Zoom and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed online through Canvas site\, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion\, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the first two portions of the test. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary.How is the result calculated?Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the LSA Language Requirement.Where can I view my results? Placement results are posted within 7 business days after taking the test. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Co-Fractionation ‘Multi-omics’ Mass Spectrometry for Lipid-Protein Interactome Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Lipids play essential roles in regulating various biological processes through functional interactions with integral or peripherally associated proteins and protein complexes. While mass spectrometry (MS)-based strategies have enabled global lipidome and proteome identification and quantitative profiling\, high-throughput strategies to investigate the lipid-protein ‘interactome’ at the systems level are currently lacking. Here\, I will first describe the development of advanced ‘shotgun’ lipidomics data acquisition workflows\, including the use of ion-mobility for selective enrichment of low abundance lipid classes\, and UV-photodissociation MS/MS to enable complete lipid structural characterisation [e.g.\, Anal. Chem. 2024\, 96\, 12296-12307.\; Anal. Bioanal. Chem. 2020\, 412\, 2339–2351.]\, and their application to characterise a novel cause of autosomal regressive multisystem mitochondrial disease resulting from deleterious variants in cardiolipin synthase 1 (CRLS1) [Human Mol. Genetics. 2022\, 31\, 3597-3612.]. Next\, using an integrated ‘multi-omics’ workflow for comprehensive lipidome and proteome profiling\, I will report that the knockout of non-mitochondrial genes in peroxisome\, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi organelles also results in mitochondrial dysfunction\, caused by unexpected alterations in ether-glycerophospholipid metabolic pathways [Nature. Cell Biol. 2024\, 26\, 57-71]. Finally\, to investigate the lipid–protein interaction relationships in these systems\, a novel Co-Fractionation Multi-Omics Mass Spectrometry (CF-MOMS) strategy will be described to characterise global alterations in the lipid-protein ‘interactome interactomes in WT and CRLS1KO cell lines\, and to highlight the functional involvement of cardiolipin-protein interactions in maintaining the assembly/stability and activity of mitochondrial membrane proteins.

DESCRIPTION:Epic acoustic classic rock\n\nMike Massé is an internationally acclaimed artist and arranger who performs epic acoustic classic rock. He is a YouTube icon with over 195 million channel views. Legends of rock like Toto\, Boston\, Sarah McLachlan\, Styx\, Rush\, Berlin\, Asia\, and others have expressed love and gratitude for his acoustic renditions of their songs. Toto cites his acoustic cover of “Africa” as their favorite.  \n\nMike initially gained notoriety for his performances posted on his widely viewed YouTube channel. The success of that channel allowed him to quit his day job as a public defender after 13 years and move his family to Denver to become a full-time musician who performs around the world.\n\nMike’s acoustic arrangements are praised for their originality\, creativity\, accuracy and simplicity. DESCRIPTION:As the Medical School celebrates the anniversary of its opening in the fall of 1850\, and Michigan Medicine marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the \"Old Main\" University Hospital that served as its flagship from 1925 to 1986\, a free museum exhibit explores 175 years of medical education\, research and clinical care. \n\nOpen to the public at the Museum on Main Street operated by the Washtenaw County Historical Society\, the exhibit includes artifacts\, photos and facts about how U-M's medical community grew from humble beginnings on the Diag to become one of the nation's largest and most respected academic medical centers. It also asks visitors to ponder their own attitudes and experiences\, and to submit memories and photos of their time working\, studying\, volunteering or receiving care at U-M's medical campus and beyond. DESCRIPTION:The Detroit Observatory was once a hub of astronomical discovery that put the University of Michigan on the map as a world-class research institution. A century later\, it was an abandoned building with an uncertain future. From cornerstone to keystone\, from the first director to the people who saved it from destruction\, explore the life of a historic observatory 170 years in the making.\n\n\"Watcher of the Sky\" is being developed by student docents at the Detroit Observatory. DESCRIPTION:Explore the personal sketchbooks of Sam Karres\, Greek-American painter and artist\, as he illustrates the daily life of residents in Greektown\, Detroit. This exhibit highlights Detroit’s Greek-American community and urban scenery during the late 20th century. Experience art and life through Sam’s eyes with scenes of music\, dance\, restaurants\, and the faces of the community. Let the vivid watercolor paintings and expressive sketches transport you to a Greektown of the past\, and learn more about Sam Karres’ life as an artist.\n\nFeaturing works from the Sam Karres Archive\, 1955-2012\, held by the University of Michigan Library's Special Collection Research Center. DESCRIPTION:“an artist known for beguiling melodies and a supple turn of a phrase.” –American Songwriter\n\nIn January 2024\, Kim Richey found herself in Mexico\, gazing out at a sea of people singing along to “I’m Alright\,” one of her classic tracks. The three folks on stage with the veteran\, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter were also raising their voices in harmony. To her right sat Brandi Carlile\, to her left\, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Brandy Clark. The formidable foursome was participating in a songwriter’s round only half-jokingly dubbed “Titans of Americana” at Carlile’s female-forward Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival on the Riviera Maya in Mexico.\n\n“That was nuts looking out and seeing everybody arm-waving and singing along\,” says Richey\, still both incredulous and cheered by the memory of performing with that supergroup and later appearing alongside other Girls Just Wanna Weekend-ers Annie Lennox\, Lucius\, Allison Russell\, and Sarah McLachlan among others. “It was just like\, ‘wow’!”\n\nThe good news for fans of this particular Titan is a whole new batch of songs to sing along with and arm wave to with the release of her 10th studio album Every New Beginning. The 10 songs on Every New Beginning represent the full spectrum of the Ohio native’s gifts as both a revered songwriter who can leap from melancholy to mirthful in a single couplet — whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Brooks and Dunn\, Patty Loveless\, and Mary Chapin Carpenter — and owner of one of music’s truly celestial voices. \n\nThat voice\, which Brandi Carlile has cited as formative in crafting her own style\, is a widely sought after harmony instrument and has been featured on scores of albums including Jason Isbell’s acclaimed Southeastern\, Trisha Yearwood’s Everybody Knows\, Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams\, Reba McEntire’s Starting Over\, and Has Been by Capt. Kirk himself\, William Shatner\, among many others.
